Re: There's A New Pokétoon Short, And It's Bloody Gorgeous

Heavyarms55

@Mgalens Self proclaimed fans cling to the series even though they haven't liked it since like gen 2. They cling to it just to bash on it. It's actually rather sad and pathetic that they can't let go. It's not healthy behavior.

I used to be a fan of Call of Duty, I bought every game for years. But as the series changed and I stopped liking it, I just stopped buying it and moved on with my life. I didn't lurk around every article and thread waiting to spit on every aspect of it that I don't like. I don't go on forum and tell people how stupid I think X, Y or Z is about the newer games.

It's okay to stop liking something or to move on when the thing you like has changed in a way that you don't care for.

@burninmylight Wow, nice retort. I care not at all what you have to say. We shall never speak again. No loss for either of us.

Re: Talking Point: With Sony And Microsoft In Next-Gen Limbo, E3 Is Nintendo's For The Taking

Heavyarms55

@carlos82 It doesn't always work for Nintendo for sure. But when they release new hardware, actually new, not a refresh, they usually do try to make something functionally new. And I've always liked that about them. SNES added 4 more buttons on the controller, N64 gave us 3D games and an analogue stick. Gamecube had all those games that linked with GBA, motion controls on Wii, Gamepad on Wii U, and we talked about Switch already.

Re: There's A New Pokétoon Short, And It's Bloody Gorgeous

Heavyarms55

@StefanN Lol, you don't need to apologize to me about replies being all over or long. I do that kind of thing all the time. If anything, I should apologize to you.

But as to your comments about XY specifically, in my experience, most people have mixed feelings about it. It's actually my most played Pokemon game by play hours, but most of that was shiny breeding while watching YouTube, which I don't really count since it requires so little attention.

Re: Talking Point: With Sony And Microsoft In Next-Gen Limbo, E3 Is Nintendo's For The Taking

Heavyarms55

@carlos82 Yeah that's a really good point. With the Switch I've been a lot more open to ports because the vast majority of those ports have never been on a portable device before.

In my opinion, the next gen offerings from Sony and MS aren't really new products at all. They're just better versions of things we already have. Switch felt like getting something new. Going from PS4 to PS5 feels like replacing an iPhone with an newer iPhone.

Further, even looking at older Sony consoles for example, they used to add new functionality on top of better graphics and faster loading. PS2 added DVD playback (which was a HUGE deal at the time, even if it sounds laughable today). PS3 supported Blue Ray and Move while PS4 brought us VR and 4k support on PS4 Pro. PS5 added no new functionality. It's just a better PS4 Pro. And that's not a bad thing, it's just not as exciting to me. It's not a new experience, just an improved version of something we already have.

Re: There's A New Pokétoon Short, And It's Bloody Gorgeous

Heavyarms55

@StefanN I made my comment mostly as a joke, because on NL the so-called Pokemon fans are especially harsh and vocal about all the things they viciously hate. I've seen people all but calling for the heads of Game Freak on a platter. But they will all but never talk about any of the positives, some go so far as to claim there are no positives. Which is a load of crap.

Jokes aside, something like this, is completely unrelated to the games at all. People will see this and complain about something in the games and it's like walking into a bakery, and complaining about the bottled soda-pop to the baker. Obviously the baker didn't make the soda!

But aside from that, people almost only complain about the Pokemon games. They only talk about the negatives. They refuse to acknowledge all the improvements we have gotten. And it's been this way for years.

You're right that it's not black and white. You're exactly right. But from the internet's perspective, there's ONLY black. Only negatives. I've been playing the games since gen 1. I know full well what Game Freak has done well and what they've done poorly and I know there's a lot of good with the bad.

But it's the internet and with each passing year, people dip further into the rabbit hole of only ever talking about the negatives. Pokemon is especially bad with this. But it's not alone.

Re: There's A New Pokétoon Short, And It's Bloody Gorgeous

Heavyarms55

Stop it. This is Pokemon. On NintendoLife you're not allowed to like anything Pokemon! Come on, complain about tree textures or the lack of National Dex for the 2,379,476,009th time! Talk about how, because they are such a big media empire that this shouldn't be a short, it should be a whole series! In fact, demand it be a whole series dropped on streaming services with a complete season, worldwide release, dubbed in 37 languages! And then, if that happens, talk about how it's still not enough!

Remember: Pokemon = bad. But it's fine because we all "love" it and are totally fans. lol

Re: Talking Point: With Sony And Microsoft In Next-Gen Limbo, E3 Is Nintendo's For The Taking

Heavyarms55

@carlos82 That's exactly it. There's not much merit in upgrading to a new system when said new system has so few games that require it. And I've not heard anyone say that the cross gen supported games play poorly on the older devices. Sure they have higher res and FPS on the newer hardware, but they generally sound like they run acceptably on the older machines.

And this is the internet in 2021. Where people complain about tree textures and having to wait more than 10 seconds on loading screens. Or maybe it's only Nintendo "fans" who get that up in arms? I seriously doubt that.

Re: Talking Point: With Sony And Microsoft In Next-Gen Limbo, E3 Is Nintendo's For The Taking

Heavyarms55

It's not a hysterical take. From what I have seen, the lack of games on PS5 and Xbox-whatever-the-heck(I like MS fine but I HATE the way they named their new systems) is the next gen exclusives. With most games released on those systems also available on PS4 and Xbone, it really doesn't leave much reason to upgrade yet.

Sure, you have the die hard folks who always want the newest toys or the best graphics. But considering the price point for these systems, I think it's fair to say a lot of people want games on those devices that actually need those devices before they fork out that kind of money.

Another thing to consider though is that Nintendo has already dropped entries into most of their killer franchises on Switch at this point. We have Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Smash, Splatoon, Xenoblade, Mario Kart, and Animal Crossing on Switch already. Yes people are still waiting on some series, like Metroid or the pipe dreams that are F-Zero or Earthbound. And there's things like SMT5 and Bayonetta, but no matter how dedicated those fans are for those games, they aren't in the same league.

Sequels and new entries in series already on the platform are probably not gonna generate the same level of hype as the first entries on the system.

But if there is anything we can say for sure - it's that people are not going to be happy with what Nintendo is offering. No matter what.

I can't remember a time when E3 came by and people were even mostly happy. And these days, online, people are NEVER happy.

Re: Pikachu Is Now On The Menu At McDonald's Restaurants In Japan

Heavyarms55

Better than having Pokemon cards that a bunch of shameless 40 year old men rush to McDonald's to buy every copy of, throw away the food and then sell online for 50 dollars or more a copy. Thus forcing the employees and parents to explain to kids "Sorry you can't get your Pikachu card, that piece of human trash just came in here, bought them all before you even saw a commercial for them"

Re: Netflix To Debut New Shows And Films At This Year's Summer Game Fest

Heavyarms55

I quit Netflix years ago. With everyone and their 3rd cousins starting their own streaming services, Netflix was rapidly losing a lot of content I wanted.

Only services I still use are Crunchyroll and Funimation. Thankfully anime hasn't been divided up among more than those two for the most part. Netflix gets a very small handful of exclusive anime every now and then. But mostly I can live without them.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Survival Games

Heavyarms55

For the life of me I don't understand why Don't Starve and Don't Starve Together have to be separate games. The lack of multiplayer was an instant no-buy for me. I thought maybe the online version would come later, but it's been like, what, 2 years now?

I'll stick to the PC version.

Re: Devolver Digital's New Game Has Been Banned In Australia

Heavyarms55

To say this game is very much NOT my cup of tea would be an extreme understatement.

But I've always believed it's better for things to be clearly rated and to allow the consumer to make their own choices.

Furthermore, history has shown that it's usually easier and more reliable to regulate things, rather than banning them outright. I generally agree with this mindset - unless things are actively dangerous to people, like real drugs and firearms, in which I think stricter laws apply.

As long as what a person is doing is not harmful to others, I say let them do it.

But perhaps back on topic, this game looks beyond terrible. Utter trash tier that doesn't sound appealing to me at all.

Re: A Ton Of Manga Just Got Added To Switch Subscription Service InkyPen

Heavyarms55

That's a darn good selection. I would have absolutely killed for something like this as a kid!

It's so much better than 8-12 dollars a volume in very limited American book store selections, or waiting 5-12 seconds per page on dial up or even early broadband internet on illicit websites.

These days there's a lot more options and I can easily read stuff like this on my PC. But if I were a kid today, I think I'd love having this on Switch. I would have laid in bed under the covers reading this all night. And slept through the first 3 hours of school every day. lol

Re: Defeat Evil With Minecraft's New Ben 10 DLC, Now Available On The Marketplace

Heavyarms55

Ben 10 was one of those shows that started airing right about immediately after I really stopped watching most cartoons. I remember considering it at the time but I never really got into it. Maybe watched a couple episodes.

But it's also one of those shows that I know has a real die hard fanbase. So good for them.

Even if I still think Minecraft DLC like this is a sad alternative to the amazing modding community on Java Minecraft on PC, I understand not everyone has a PC and you can't really run mods on consoles.

Re: Crysis Remastered Trilogy Confirmed For A Switch Release This Fall

Heavyarms55

@ThanosReXXX Oh yeah, I know full well how demanding the game was, relative to like 98% of other games from the same era, you really needed to have a top tier machine.

But I think it's that aspect of the game, the graphical focus, that is the reason why I don't think it's aged all that well. Like I said, I don't think it's a bad game at all. But it is all just "fine". There's really nothing special about it anymore, aside from the real world history behind it.

I'm pretty glad most studios don't do that anymore. The push to release absolute monsters of games that push the highest end gaming PCs to their highest limits. Given the tech around these days, that would demand 3000 dollar or more machines. It seems like most PC games these days are targeted at running on 1000-1500 dollar rigs, with settings that can take advantage of stronger hardware if you've got it.

Re: Random: 'Twice For Nintendo Switch' Twitter Trend Leaves News-Hungry Fans Disappointed

Heavyarms55

All I know about TWICE and K-Pop is that all the female students I used to teach while working Japan loved them and loved K-Pop. Which amused me, because I've always loved Japanese music and J-Pop and J-Rock in particular. So I grew up, went to Japan and low and behold a lot of kids in Japan like Korean music.

There must be something about foreign music that a certain subset of people just like.

I always wondered if my neighbors were surprised after I moved in and only listened to Japanese music. Never worked up the nerve to ask them though.

Re: Crysis Remastered Trilogy Confirmed For A Switch Release This Fall

Heavyarms55

I finally got the first game after years of hearing about and it just did not live up to the hype. I'm not complaining about graphics or performance. The actual gameplay and story. None of it is bad at all. Let me say that, it's not bad at all.

It just doesn't pull me in. It feels generic. The characters are dull, the story is... fine. Just fine. And the gameplay is... fine. Nothing is bad or anything, just nothing impressed me either.

Maybe this game was amazing when it was new or for younger players. Or maybe it was just so hyped for the graphics. But overall, I just didn't get into it.

All the power to ya if you've got nostalgia for it, or just genuinely love the game. That's just not me.

Re: The Pokémon Company Recorded Its Highest Profits Ever In 2020

Heavyarms55

Oh hey look, a Pokemon article! Time for about another 50-250 comments of whining and complaining about how much ya'll hate Pokemon but that it's fine because you're fans!

I'm not surprised by this at all. Video game sales are up almost entirely across the board. PoGo probably made a killing off of remote raid passes over the last year. But if anyone thinks that's just "another case of brain dead Pokemon fanboys" - welcome to the world of mobile gaming. Mobile games make crap loads of money off of micro transactions once they find their niche. Whether you like that or not, that's just how things are.

Re: The Atelier Ryza Series Has Shipped One Million Copies, Koei Tecmo Celebrates With Free DLC Costumes

Heavyarms55

Oh cool! I'm about, maybe 2/3 to 3/4 of the way through the game I think. I'll have to grab these updates next time I play.

I absolutely love these games! Such likable characters and such a fun story. These so much about these games I find refreshing and enjoyable.

Having a true female lead in an RPG is just so rare, and yet they did such a good job. She is so well written both as a main character and as a girl. Most of the few female MCs I've seen in the past, the whole story will revolve around them being a girl. Instead of a girl going on an adventure or journey, they'd make the story about a girl overcoming being a girl or convincing people to trust her despite being a girl and garbage tropes like that. Or they'll have you play as a girl, but then the story will just revolve around her following a man around, or trying to live up to what men want from her and blah blah blah.

Ryza isn't like that at all. She's a natural leader. She's both kind hearted and assertive. She cares deeply for her friends and is always happy to help others - and yet she still wants to do what she wants to do. And this attitude makes people want to follow her. I love how despite being a hard worker, she can still be lazy at times. I love how even now, in the second game when she's far more experienced, she can still jump head first into things that might backfire horribly.

I find her to be one of the best written characters I've seen in games.

And the supporting cast are all quite good too. This author is wonderful at writing very human and relatable and believable characters.

Another thing I love about the Ryza games is that if does such a good job of portraying men and women as friends. Because so many people in 2021 still seem to think that if men and women are friends, it's just a cover for, or a prelude to romance. That men and women can't just spend time together with shared interests as friends. That's nonsense and I love that this game does such a good job of showing a cast of men and women who genuinely are good friends with little to no romance involved.

Finally, it's nice to have a game that, although there is obviously combat and a lot of serious moments, the core mechanics are built around making things and helping people. Not destroying things and killing.

Re: Talking Point: What Do You Think The "Switch Pro" Will Actually Be Called?

Heavyarms55

I really don't think it's gonna be anything we guess. It will be something out of left field. Did ANYONE predict Wii U? DSi? I feel like if there's any truth to the so-called leaks, it's not gonna be something we've predicted.

But if I could vote for which one I liked, I'd vote for Super Switch, or Switch Advance. Switch Plus has a nice ring to it too.

Re: Mech-Shooter Wing Of Darkness Soars Onto Switch This Week

Heavyarms55

This looks pretty decent. And only 30 dollars? I might have to try it out. I was all ready to repeat my rant about great 2D character design with lazy 3D graphics like on that other article - but this game actually looks like it does a pretty good job with it's designs.

I like anime girls, and I like mechs. So this is worth a look for sure.

Re: Random: This Kid Tried To Sell His Prized Pokémon Card Collection To Save A Sick Puppy

Heavyarms55

@ZebZed The COVID issues only affect the in-print stuff though. And even then, it's not like Pokemon can change that. It was human trash like Logan Paul on YouTube who turned Pokemon card collecting into a pseudo-stock market.

Again, I'm not saying Pokemon couldn't be doing more, but it's not their fault that we have this problem. We all know this scalping issue is affecting so many things right now. I don't claim to have all the answers. But the problem is the scalpers. At this point they're barely better than drug dealers, gambling addicts and cyber criminals. They stalk vendors, harass legitimate customers, lie, mislead, and cause problems for everyone. They organize gangs to swarm stores to get around product sale limits, they use computer AI bots to mass buy product online as soon as it becomes available. They set up PO boxes to get around product limits per households, they bribe retail workers to get around limits or to set aside products just for the scalpers.

At this point it's one step short of being organized crime - only it's mostly, technically, legal.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Replay Games?

Heavyarms55

I really think the poll for reasons you want to replay games should let us choose more than one option.

I'd bet 500 dollars that almost everyone who replays games, replays different games for different reasons.

Re: Random: This Kid Tried To Sell His Prized Pokémon Card Collection To Save A Sick Puppy

Heavyarms55

@ZebZed I'm not defending Pokemon at all - but I don't blame them for insane people starting fistfights over cards they want to scalp.

And I agree that theme decks and the academy set shouldn't be rare, but are because of the utter nonsense that scalpers have caused.

Pokemon could be doing a LOT more to fight this problem, but it's not a problem they created. It's scalping. And it's a problem affecting so many things right now. Card games, electronics, and collectibles of all sorts. Scalping needs to be regulated in some way, and that will require some legal changes.

Re: Random: This Kid Tried To Sell His Prized Pokémon Card Collection To Save A Sick Puppy

Heavyarms55

Not gonna lie, I saw the headline and was all ready to rant about how a child should never have to do this, the parents should be taking care of the dog's medical expenses.

But as it turned out, that more or less happened. Happy ending I suppose. But it does still kind of annoy me that it happened at all. Having pets is expensive. And if we aren't prepared for that, we shouldn't adopt the pet. That's exactly why I don't have a cat right now. I don't have that kind of disposable income for a constant expense like owning a pet.
