After last month's update was halted the day after its release, Nintendo has now Version 12.1.0 of the Switch system firmware.
This seems to be a minor patch - at least on face value. It allows Switch users to now delete old data for software, to make it easier to download newer data, and as usual, there are some general system stability improvements.
Here are the full patch notes, courtesy of Nintendo's official support page:
Ver. 12.1.0 (Released July 5, 2021)
Added the following system functionality:
- If there is not enough space remaining on the system memory (internal storage) or microSD card when downloading game software update data, you can now delete old data for that software, enabling you to download the new data.
- When deleting the old data, you won't be able to play the game until the new data has finished downloading.
General system stability improvements have been made to enhance the user's experience.
Nintendo dataminer OatmealDome has shared some additional information about the latest update via Twitter:
"[Switch Firmware Update] 12.1.0 is out...Internally, every part of the OS was updated. Not sure which ones have real changes.
"It does appear Nintendo has introduced a new encryption master key (homebrewers: key 0B) in this update. Unfortunately, this might be blocking @ylws8bot from reading the update data since it doesn’t know the new encryption key, so more detailed analysis will have to wait."
Version 12.1.0 also includes a new update for the Switch Joy-Con controller. You can read more about how to perform this update in our other post.

Perfectly stable, as things should be.

PLLLLLLLLLEEAS...Folders!
With great power, comes great stability.
What did it break this time?
Hope it fixes youtube app, the search function has been weird for a little while.
Hopefully it doesn't break anything this time. That download bug last time was quite annoying.
Thank god for this update. I was getting nervous my switch wasn't stable enough
So does it fix the previous download issue?
The Nintendo Ninjas are so quick to assassinate that error it's almost like it never happen. Like I said before though my brother experience the dreaded error, I never did and the issue got resolve so quick that by the time I download Kazuya for Smash Bros. Ultimate I did not get hit by such an error.
Still no folders, eh?
I was worried over the lack of stability from last update, now all is right.
If this doesn’t allow custom themes then fk it idc.. seriously wtf is up with no switch customization.. I’d literally pay $10+ to get a Zelda background and icons on my Switch.. come on Nintendo
@Franklin I think it's intentional, a new feature - the keyboard displays over the app instead of opening a separate window, so what you type appears live
Folders..folders..and folders...how hard can it be...UGH..
@Longondo I liked the system music on the Wii
Folders, themes, eShop improvements. Note that this isn't version 13.0.0 we're getting.
Nintendo giving us more stability in a world that is unbalanced
Still not giving us folders though.
All I want is folders. Don't need themes, eShop is fine (though music would be nice), just give me some folders so it's easier to cycle through my now 100+ games.
So, the update is already stable ?
No more Ixion caused the unstable ?
After that last update all hell broke loose. Is it safe?
Also Nintendo we are four years into the switch life and no folders? Come on get it in gear!
I don't want a slow system, so I'm happy with no themes or folders.
@Zeldafan79
@Cheez
@Heavyarms55
Was that download error actually firmware related? Has that been confirmed?
I got the error without upgrading my firmware the last time, and the fix also did not require a new firmware download either, but was fixed server site.
My guess is, that it was more of a coincidence that this server bug at Nintendo happened at the same time of a new firmware rollout on the Switch?
The second they added themes to the 3DS, the menu load times tripled. I’m happy without. But I also still want them to add the option, just so everybody can stop moaning about it with every system update.
Yesterday I got a eerie feeling that my Switch was no longer stable. Thankfully Nintendo made my Switch stable again!
Came here to make sure the update was safe before I downloaded it this time.. 😅
Forget the so Win95 folders, organization by Metadata is the way!
As long as it doesn't mess up downloads again...
Download it today?
Nope not after the last update I'll wait a week too if there are any ground breaking bugs
@dres
It was supposed to fix it but it actually made it worse as a lot more people got it after uodate
Nintendo have been tight lipped at what caused the problem. So think initial problem probably wasn't related too a updated but the fix made it worse
Hopefully it won't cause download problems again.
Not yet downloading it. Waiting for feedback in case of any problem like latest update...
By the way, it means game updates add datas, but there are some datas useless that stays on your SDcard or internal memory !?
Didn't know of that...
I wonder how much it represents on all my installed games ??
@sanderev I would take a system as sluggish as the Wii U if it just meant this $300 console had the features of a $300 console.
@Franklin probably didnt.
Youtube is the one that needs to fix their *****, the youtube app on my tv has been showing a lot of weirdness lately too, and for some reason it seems that youtube straight up just uses the TV app on the switch... Its awful.
Sounds pretty QoL, actually.
@sanderev
Yes, because this very minor feature would make the system slow. Definitely far slower than it is already to find a game you haven't played in the last 10 games/apps....
It's a switch, not a potato XD
Bit cautious about downloading updates after the last fiasco. Think I'll leave it a while this time.
I don’t understand the point about game data. Are my games taking up more space than they should be?
@Deady Warframe comes to mind.
If this update allows us to delete older inconsequential updates to make room on our SD cards, without harming the game, that would be excellent; Warframe updates are slowly taking up butt-tons of data.
Are they just withholding folders as some sick joke.
Come on, Nintendo...
@dres No one had reported the issue prior to that update. While I can't say for certain the update itself was the reason, it is extremely likely.
I don't want an unstable console!! I NEED TO DOWNLOAD THIS PATCH IMMEDIATELY
@Rosona The Switch OS was designed to be minimalistic with only a 700KB size footprint. Adding music, large pictures and folders would only add a lot of memory usage to the OS. (compared to the base) So yeah, that WILL slow it down.
Every update that doesn’t include folders makes me hate Nintendo more.
Google should add this to android too.
so annoying I need 4GB free space on my phone to update some games, when the updates don't add more than a few MB at the most to the actual size.
Upon asking the system to update a Game on this update,
It stalled,
I got a error code 2162-0002.
what is that?
