Well, after over two years of speculation, Nintendo has finally unveiled the new Nintendo Switch, simply called the OLED model that's due to arrive on 8th October. It falls in line with some of the more recent rumours, offering a larger and higher quality screen – at 720p resolution – along with some other quality of life improvements like a wider and more flexible kickstand, a LAN / ethernet port on the new dock and improved speakers.
Now, let's be completely clear about what this isn't, it isn't a 'Pro' model. Nintendo gives no indication in any materials that it'll have improved performance in any way; the TEGRA chip may even be exactly the same as the 2019 'Mariko' iteration that boosted battery life, with OLED screen efficiency likely balanced out by the larger size. The branding and messaging here is simple - games will be the same.
If this feels familiar, that's because it is. In E3 week we did an article asking "what if Nintendo just released a basic Switch XL?"; the OLED is arguably a notch up from being a simple 'XL', but it's miles off other fanciful rumours. As we highlighted in that article, a lot of the same 'sources' and 'rumours' of the past few months were repeating similar claims first seen in 2019. Talk of 4K output and enhanced capabilities were bouncing around back then, and what happened was the aforementioned 'soft' iteration, where a new version of the GPU was simply more efficient but the end-user experience, ie how we play games, remained unchanged.
And so the pattern has repeated. Aspects of recent reports were on the money - a new model, a 7-inch screen. Other parts of the rumours, all of those about improved capabilities, were wide of the mark. As was the case two years ago, what's likely happened is a mix of sources leaking legitimate details about new screens ready for construction, while also mixing in some fanciful claims. Part wish fulfilment perhaps, fuelled by the idea that Switch needs more power to maintain third-party support as the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S era takes hold.
Naturally this has led to some expressing disappointment or feeling underwhelmed. To be clear, this isn't exactly Nintendo's fault; it has never said more powerful hardware was imminent, the internet just tried to will it into existence. With the Switch still selling outstanding numbers there's arguably little need for Nintendo to shift its hardware focus too far, but ultimately there will be some frustrated fans. It's undeniably the case that, outside of some of the better ports and first-party efforts, the system is increasingly struggling to run newer games well. For the foreseeable future, at least, playing various third-party games - in particular - on Switch will still be an exercise in compromise.
Of course, Nintendo will have more powerful hardware planned, but that's like saying a new Mario game will be released at some point. Yet there's logic to Nintendo keeping things simple with the OLED this year, avoiding adding an entirely new branch to the Switch 'family' in extremely tricky times. The reality is that Sony and Microsoft will continue to fail to meet demand for their new consoles for much of 2021, other tech industries are toiling too. Manufacturing in the sector is struggling badly to produce enough 'chips', and if Nintendo had a new system with different chipsets it would likely have had the same problems. With the OLED model it can keep working with its existing manufacturing process, just with some tweaks in construction.
As for the pricing, it'll be a $50USD upgrade on the price of the standard model, so that'll be $349.99 - is $50 about right? Well the screen will be a definite upgrade in terms of size and the depth of colour, improved speakers are welcome for those who like playing portably, while the kickstand is basically what it should have been in the original model. The dock having a LAN connection is also a nice plus, especially for those that enjoy a lot of online play in the likes of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. We reckon $50 is just about fair for the benefits, though you could certainly argue otherwise. We will say we're disappointed to see no mention of bluetooth support, however, which is even more daft now than it was in 2017.
So that's the new Switch we get this year, and it'll take us through a rather impressive game line-up in the Holiday season and into some promising titles for 2022. Those waiting for a 'Pro' will need to be patient, once again.
Let us know what you think of the Switch OLED model in the polls and comments below!

I’m just glad this isn’t the type of upgrade that’s forced on someone if they want to play certain games the way they’re meant to be played. The screen seems nice for those who want this, but I have other things to save my money for, and if I want to see my switch games look better, I can always just dock my current switch.
Probably worth it for those like me who play the Switch in handheld mode for several hours on most days.
For casual players who already own a Switch or players who play docked, not so much. But that's fine. It's not like anyone's being forced to rush off and buy one. The current model not becoming completely obsolete isn't exactly a bad thing.
Removed - unconstructive
I was at least holding out hope for some upgrade to the dock that would benefit players who game more in TV Mode like 4K output or something like that. As is I feel people who game in handheld almost exclusively like myself might get a lot more mileage out of the upgrade
I still think 64GB of internal storage is meager though. There are games on Switch with download sizes that take up half that capacity
This is basically pointless to even consider getting if you are one who plays primarily docked. You gain nothing from the new screen, speakers or kickstand, and if you cared enough for a wired ethernet connection you will have already gotten an adapter by now. Was at least hoping for some kind of power boost, even if it was something that guaranteed a more stable experience across the board rather than a 4K upscaling.
I'll probably only ever get this if my current switch fully breaks (since its falling apart at the seams essentially) or if they make a special edition that I simply HAVE to have.
As it stands this is only really worth it to the people who play handheld mostly and want an upgrade or for those who are new to switch and just don't care what they get.
@VoidofLight Eaxctly. Nintendo isnt the company to do that
Will this be it for the next three years though? Then I'm disappointed.
Not having a switch pro or a switch 2 in the next three years feels a bit too long in my opinion. I'm not buying most 3d party ports on Switch anymore since it's just almost impossible to optimise them anymore. (bar the exceptions such as tony hawk). Being in that situation for the next three years means not many 3d party games will get ported anymore.
Well said it’s not Nintendo’s fault people thought this would be a pro, it’s the people listening to fake claims.
It looks pretty cool but as someone who plays 99% docked mode there's simply no reason for me to get one as it isn't a significant upgrade.
Maybe if my original Switch ever packed in I'd probably get one
It's just not enough for me to even consider buying. I play primarily in handheld mode but I find it a bit insulting tbh, if this is what they consider an upgrade - a slightly better screen but zero performance improvements thanks, but no thanks.
I love how everyone is now crying over no 4K/enhanced graphics. Maybe next time don’t believe every single leak you see online. That aside this will probably be a buy from me, cause I usually bring my switch around wherever I go, so the bigger screen is great for me.
It looks lovely but not enough of an upgrade for me to consider buying some switch games can look a bit muddy in handheld and an oled screen is just gonna make bad textures and the like even more obvious cool if you haven’t already got a switch I suppose
Switch 2 late 2023 probably. In 2020 ninty did say switch was halfway through life span.
This is pure Nintendo. They have not changed their plan in decades and they aren't about to now. Not worth my cash, I don't blindly buy things simply because some company makes it.
This is definitely something for new customers. Unfortunately I already have two Switches so don't need a third just for an improved portable experience.
The laziest upgrade in history from nintendo……. I expected bettet
I'm just happy it's not called the New Nintendo Switch. I love the 3DS family, but I won't deny that was weird branding lol.
I don't know...As far as a new chip or significant hardware upgrades? I can only imagine the bigger backlash had Nintendo released a Switch revision with an improved chip for about $400 that most likely would've attracted third parties to release exclusives for it. Then the complaints of "Nintendo is splitting the userbase!!!" and/or "Nintendo is charging us $400 for some improvements and to play so and so third party games?!"
I say leave the under the hood and new and improved chips for the next Switch. But I guess they could've improved it to make docked play slightly better.
It's the internet, at least half of the people are going to be disappointed no matter what they do. 🤷♂️
I'd say in this case -
happy - those who wanted an OLED screen
those who are happy Nintendo finally said something
unhappy - those who wanted MOAR POWER!!
those who play docked, b/c it's an extra $50 to get a LAN port
There are others, but that's probably the majority of people.
My TV is an OLED, so this is pointless, lol
Ok why are people made about this? this is yall fault, you guys hyped something that never was, then you get it and you start wining about it, sure I couldn't really care for this model, but thank god I don't have to get a new one just to play newer games.
My Switch is tatty and old, it creaks and flexes. The fan inside hums. I do need a new one. That said this oled version seems to be the same low quality as the original. I forsee the flimsy plastic cracking in the same places. I'll get one if I see it for a good price, or if they do a Metroid version, but I am in no hurry, until my switch inevitably breaks. Weird because my GBA, Wii and 3DS all seem to be in much better condition than my Switch. They are just sturdier.
May disappoint? LOL!!! Yes, it will ABSOLUTELY disappoint. I will keep my 'vanilla' Switch + PS5 to get the most out of my gaming thanks. As Indies continue to grow and there appears to be even bigger differences in performance between the Switch and PS5, I think I'm going to just hold off on buying multiplats for Switch and only the really great Nintendo exclusives. Man, it's hard being a fan of Nintendo with these HORRIBLE business decisions they have been doing since the Wii U.
Switch Pro looks awesome. If it had just been a graphics bump it would have been more disappointing. This at least is a change to the console’s design
I own a launch Switch, so I will probably buy this as a replacement. I'm not very impressed with the improvements though.
I'm hanging off for the Switch OLED Pro.
Oled is beautiful.
+50 usd, but what in the box? It's look smaller than original.
This is cool for people that don't have a Switch yet. It's not offering anything that makes me want to upgrade from my original model.
The biggest missed opportunity was the D-Pad. I would have got it day one, if only it had a D-Pad. The kick stand actually works now and the screen looks good. If it was made of aluminum or something more sturdy, I'd totally be in on this. I don't care about better performance.
I'll probably get it. I've been thinking about getting another Switch for a while, but with all the Switch Pro rumors I was waiting until there was an announcement. It helps that I mostly play in handheld mode too, so it'll be a nice improvement.
At the end of the day, I'm relieved. There's nothing in this bag for me, but now I don't have to worry about coming up with $350 in time and beating out the scalpers if I want to be able to play X game or play games with the best resolution possible. It's just a neat little nice-to-have. Nothing essential. My Switch still has everything I need for the optimum Nintendo experience. I'm good with that.
I wouldn't have bought a Switch Pro no matter what it was, so I'm relieved this is just a minor upgrade and I won't really be missing out on anything.
The internet only have themselves to blame, as the article says. Whenever there is an announcement or rumour, it thinks up the most improbable features and it always ends up as a "let down".
Costs as much as an all digital ps5! I’d say that’s disappointing since it’s as powerful as a ps3.
I got an day one Switch which I barely get to play thanks to my daughter.
So the benefits here for me is I need a new Switch, two Switches in the house for multiplayer non-split screen, I get longer battery, a bigger screen, additional controllers, more space for backlogged games and better sound as I barely play docked.
I get not everyone will be excited about this, especially the specs being the same.
I don’t think the disappointment people are feeling has anything to do with fake claims and rumours. I’m sure there’s people who’ve put stock into them who are feeling disappointed but either way, I think a lot of us expected a more premium revision with a solid power boost at some point regardless of what rumours suggested considering it’s just in Nintendo’s nature.
Really, given both the DS and 3DS received revisions that gave those platforms more horsepower to work with (far more utilised/marketed in the New 3DS than DSi), it was fair to assume a new Switch would follow suit with a more capable chipset. It just makes sense to upgrade the capabilities of it mid generation in the way we’ve seen Sony and Microsoft demonstrating (as well as Nintendo), and especially with Switch where we’re starting to see a lot more downgrades when playing in handheld VS docked (tanked resolutions, halved frame rates in even first party games like Bowser’s Fury). I never expected nor wanted it to be upgraded to stay competitive with Series X/PS5 as some had hoped, only for it to give games that target the Switch a meaningful boost in frame rate and resolution when possible- maybe some extra effects etc.
The OLED Switch looks great, but it looks more like a replacement for the old model than a premium version that caters to those who want to pay more for better performance. I don’t see much reason to upgrade personally- it’s cool for new buyers but a nicer screen and a better stand weren’t the main things I was looking for from this.
The only thing of interest for me was the new footage of Pokemon BDSP which looked much better than the reveal trailer
@KryptoniteKrunch They use NVIDIA for their chips and their DLSS would most likely do the heavy lifting of improving frame rate and RTX for visuals improvements. Both of which can be turned off for the base models
For reference I have a 2070 SUPER in my PC and I could barely get above 40 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 with ultra settings and raytracing on but with DLSS at 1080p Could get over 100 FPS and at 1440p could get 75-90 FPS
@hbkay Do you think the Game Boy to Game Boy Color is also lazy? How bout the Game Boy Advance to Game Boy Micro? Remember it took the Game Boy nine years to get to GBC, it took the GBA five years to get to GBM, it only took Switch 4 years to get to Switch OLED and you still got the Switch Lite and that other model in between as well. Be glad your gen get your new models faster than our gen.
Even New Nintendo 3DS was better than this.. I don't mind screen quality.. all I want is better processor. Of course this isn't Nintendo's fault but it's really.. underwhelming..
Arguably little need?
Tegra chip is weak by today's standard.. so many unoptimized overpriced games on Switch ergh
Thanks to all the leaks and buildup hype, this reveal is now considered disappointing while providing an upgraded version at the same price is always good news.
What did you think, that Nintendo really went for 4K visuals? They make a profit on the hardware because it is their core business, not another column in the total business.
The best part about this is that now I don't have to worry about buying one? If there was a pro I might feel compelled to, and then be disappointed when I can't find one?
A pro may one day come though, this is just a rebrand of the XL line of DS and 3DS
Personally, I hope this signals that there won't be a "Pro" model and the OLED Switch will just bridge the gap between now and when the Switch successor comes out. I'd much rather they get a few more years out of the current family of models and then release a meaningful, substantial upgrade in the form of the next Switch. I understand Nintendo said they see the Switch as halfway through it's life cycle, but they have to be cognizant of waiting too long to release the next one and have the software start to run dry. Late 2023/early 2024 has always seemed like a good window for the next Switch to me.
So any qol improvements to the joycons too? The screen looks nice and the bezels look much better than the og switch but I don't see any other improvements tech wise, they could have added more ram or more internal storage or better performance to the mix but I guess this is ok I'm in no rush to get this yet but I will see how people react to the new model before I splurge on this one!
The lack of 4K docked will be a turnoff for me and the price $349.99 above the $299.99 when you barely get any improvements that would justify the price hike. If that was 4K docked mode for $349.99 then I would be interested. OLED does no good when Docked.
@Bulborb I wasn’t expecting 4K or anything, but for it to at least match their ambitions with their previous handheld upgrade (New 3DS). Better frame rates (Hyrule Warriors), better load times (Smash 3DS), better resolutions. Nothing major but would make the Switch experience just a bit better. I love the Switch but it’s definitely getting more common that I’m thinking “I wish this were a bit clearer” or “I wish this ran a bit smoother” as new games release.
@tzahn I figure they want the Switch brand to beat the PS2 sales before they could introduce their successor. Bringing a successor too soon will slow sales of the current Switch system and that goal may not be met.
@Matl yeah the ethernet port is useless to me I don't use it but the 64gb of internal storage is a welcome although with micro SD cards I guess the majority of people won't need this extra space
I mainly play in handheld mode so maybe this new revision is for me the bonus of a nice screen compared to the lite model is a plus for me
@Bulborb A slight boost in power to keep certain games at 30fps docked and raise the resolution on some games that drop below 576p handheld is what I hoped for.
Also, I think talks and expectations of a stronger model are potentially unavoidable as the switch's hardware is known as quite weak for its time.
In the end, I don't care that much. I still love Nintendo's offerings and that's ultimately what matters to me.
"The branding and messaging here is simple - games will be the same."
And folks, this is EXACTLY the thing we should have. Nintendo clearly doesn't want to repeat the whole mess with the 3DS. No Ambassador exclusivity, no New 3DS hardware gap (because for some reason they thought it was a cool idea to lock all the SNES games).
Just a fair variety to choose from with differences that don't change your overall gameplay.
Once again, if you're playing a Nintendo-published game that doesn't meet your standards, you blame the developers for not adapting to the console properly. It's not the hardware to blame.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi True, but at the same time if they bank on that and wait too long it may impact the sales of the successor as they'll always be trying to play catch-up. It'll be an interesting decision for them.
In a way it's a good thing (and understandable for Nintendo's part) that we don't get an truly enhanced mid gen model.
I think it means that a true Switch will come sooner now (my bet is early/first quarter 2022).
Frankly outside of Metroid Dread, Resident Evil Outbreak/Revelations 3, I don't really suspect much will be released for the Switch that I'm really interested (so the sooner the we get a true successor, the better is my conclusion).
take me back to dem vita oled days! gonna enjoy this handheld
To be honest, all I want now is a heads up for when they decide to stop making them so I can buy a new back up of the last best model. Six months to a year will do me, so I don't end up struggling to find a reasonably priced new one like I have with the 3DS.
Good. I'll keep my old switch and save my money for a new Joycon or two.
@SwitchForce That extra $50 was included cause they bundle the system with a built-in LAN adapter on the dock, a bigger stand, and a 64gb storage. It would had cost you almost the same amount if you bought a LAN adapter, a new stand, and a 64gb storage for your old Switch.
@ModdedInkling The New 3DS was an improvement for me alone for the stable 3D effect. I more often than not play with it on (just a tiny bit, I do know it's not that good for my brain - the same can be said of VR by the way, but that's another matter).
How is this screen bigger? It's very difficult to tell what's going on from the images. Is it just wider with no height increase? The height looks the same as the current Switch.
I currently own a switch and love it but for that price the choice is get a marginally bigger, more vibrant screen or keep what I have and also get a PS5 digital.
Absolutely no point in upgrading unless your current switch is broken or if you are very rich and already have the other consoles.
This upgrade is a waste. 50 bucks for slightly better handheld and little storage upgrade. That's not worth announcing. Nintendo seem to got lazy with this upgrade
@NeonPizza Yeah, I can understand wanting it for purely cosmetic reasons or just having a neater play area. I think the main issue with this model is that what it does upgrade is stuff that people were saying should have been in the console from almost day one.
"My kickstand broke off immediately - they should make it go across the whole back and non detachable"
"Why is there no ethernet port? Now I gotta go buy an adapter"
And I guess some people will have complained about the screen and speakers too back then.
It's just a pretty disappointing "upgrade" given that the switch is four and a half years old at this point and what needed improving just hasn't after all this time (more power, or at least enough to actually RUN stuff at a not awful resolution and frame rate), and what HAS been improved was what everyone expected the base model of the switch to have after having it on the market for a month. Again, this is mainly something the more handheld side of the consumer base will get a kick out of, but not for people who want their stuff to actually run well.
@SuperToe the bezels are thinner
@tzahn They could introduce the successor once the Switch is nearing the PS2 sales figure, it should take them another 3 years from now to get there if Switch sale doesn't slump by then. On the second year would be the perfect year to introduce the successor and then launch it on the third year. Switch could still be on sale for another 2-3 years after the successor launch to wrap up production. The successor being backwards compatible with all Switch games both digital and physical will help it move forward.
Nintendo seem to be looking at switch as another of their handheld devices rather than the hybrid home console it actually is, which is probably why they are comfortable with releasing such a model after this long. But whereas that worked for the game boy, DS and 3DS lines, those games were always destined to not look absolutely brilliant due to the hardware and form factor. Whereas the switch is capable of running modern home console quality games, which would naturally make a lot of the consumer base more interested in a better switch revision that can run a full 1080p 60fps, for instance (or even 4K upscaling if that was a possibility).
But by pushing the switch as a hybrid system they really should look towards actually giving a spec bump after this long, to at least appease the side of the consumer base that actually cares about their games running well or just not using the handheld mode that often. As it stands currently, this revision stands as the 3DS XL before the New 3DS - an upgrade in aesthetics and some minor features before the true power upgrade later on. But like I've said, this is probably why many feel the switch really should have had a spec bump by now, since they see switch as more of a home console than a handheld, and I guess Nintendo thinks the opposite.
This upgrade is definitely for handheld players. The only benefit I see for docked players is the LAN port but even me, being a docked player, doesn’t even use the LAN port on my other consoles.
I don’t speak for everyone with my own opinion but this was certainly an upgrade aimed at handheld players mostly.
I’m excited to see one of these in person but as of right now, I have zero incentive to upgrade my current model.
Nice to know I have a better version to look forward to if mine tanks someday.
The lack of Bluetooth is still utterly insulting. I’d love to be able to connect my beats headphones up without an adapter :/
@larryisanassman Thank you. The rumors have little to do with the disappointment, the disappointment is because the Switch's specs are naturally considered outdated and a mid gen refresh typically fixes that (not just with Microsoft and Sony, but even Nintendo's past handhelds). Even if there were no rumors, you'd still hear similar complaints.
@shgamer You forgot about No More Heroes 3, Bayonetta 3, Breath of the Wild 2, the new Donkey Kong, Metroid Prime 4, Cruis'n Blast, Ni no Kuni 2, Project Triangle Strategy, that one Fire Emblem remake that this Zippo guy is leaking, the Castlevania Advance Collection, the final Smash fighter, the Crysis trilogy, World War Z, Pokemon Legends Arceus, that one GTA game which that Zippo guy still claim it's coming, and also didn't Nintendo claim to have hundred more games that were not announce yet coming to Switch before this fiscal year ended? I say it's not the end just yet, not even close, maybe in 2026 but now the Switch is doing just fine you will find something you like before Nintendo put the Switch to rest. Even garbage like Plumber Don't Wear Tie will be here among the bunch for your cash.
Surprised they are charging more, as this looks like a logical step over 4 years after launch. Also odd why those USB ports aren't 3.0 yet and that they've done very little to the dock. You could literally put a better CPU in the dock so that it helps the Switch with resolution and framerate. With USB C as a bridge dual processing should have been on the "unique" features. Like running a set of two GPU's in crossfire. The Switch still has the tech to run portable, but gets an even bigger leg up docked.
I'd be all over this if I played more handheld, but as I prefer to play on the TV, and have two docks, I don't see a need for this. Perhaps if it had bluetooth audio built in (or if a Metroid special edition is announced).
@Matl It would help the Switch actually feel like a handheld if you could fit it in your freaking pocket instead of needing a carrying case, but lol nope, let's make it bigger and make it even less portable. I absolutely view my Switch as more of a console than a handheld.
@Matl I think they definitely see it as a handheld more than a home console. That was always their bread and butter prior to Switch and considering how developers pretty much have to ensure their games play in handheld/tabletop (unless it’s something that can only be done on the TV which I’m not sure any example of that even exists), one third of the available Switch options is handheld only and this new Switch mainly improves on the mobile experience, I think it’s safe to say they don’t look at it like a traditional home console. The docked mode just lets them curtail having to have a traditional system on the market alongside a handheld as they would have before.
It’s worth bearing in mind that the Switch is still a powerful HD console in it’s own right. It’s not purely about next-gen PS / Xbox games being ported.
There are plenty of stunning titles on the way. Also, games designed specifically for the switch can have good graphics and performance like Astral Chain.
I think it’s hard to be disappointed at the lack of upgraded power.
I think Nintendo realised the hype for this machine had got out of control and then probably pulled the reveal from E3 because of the backlash
Day 1 buy ! Cant wait !
@Ghost_of_Hasashi right…..
Gameboy to gameboy colour, massive difference. There was specific colour games for the machine & it also added colour to existing titles. And we got a smaller gameboy pocket before that, with a screen we could actually see.
Gameboy advance to gameboy micro, HUGE difference. Smaller form factor & a really great screen. Interchangable faceplates too. Oh and lets not forget the SP version BEFORE the micro which added a sidelit screen & clamshell design.
So yeah, this is still the laziest minimal ‘sidegrade’(as i wouldnt call it an upgrade) ever. Also, realise that the screens for the launch switch consoles are probably too old and costly for nintendo to source now, and that these 7” oleds are entry level.
As for ‘my gen’……… dont judge a book by its cover😉
I don't think I will be getting this. The screen looks too big for me.
I'll get one eventually, not this year though. I'm in no hurry whatsoever.
Obviously the time is not right for a few good reasons for an upgrade.
It looks pretty and is a nice edition to the Switch family and will probably boost sales a little.
For me a few more AAA in house games later this year would have been better.
BOTW 2 in 2022 is a big disappointment, especially also with no new Mario odyssey, Mario kart or any real big hitter for this year from their in house studios.
Nintendo have been on a slightly disappointing trend this year and seem lazy if honest.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Sorry, but I'm a bit "narrow minded" when it comes to what games I play these days (Resident Evil was what made me a gamer back in 1999 - before that I was mainly into arcade games - and not that serious).
And it's not like I haven't tried Metroid Prime, No More Heroes (just the demo), one of the DS Igavanias (I might buy GBA collection on a sale though just to try it out) and I did buy Crysis and have regretted it since.
Dread I'm buying mainly because I generally like Mercury Steams' games (I like good action games that are not too fast paced - Bayonetta, Devil May Cry etc. are not my cup of tea, so to speak).
Fact is that my Switch is more or less a remaster/Resident Evil machine. I've bought 2 non remasters (God Eater 3 and G.I.Joe) and then Doom 1-3 + 64, Duke Nukem, Skyrim, Dark Souls etc.
And fright not, the situation is much worse with my PS4 it's almost completely a remaster/Resident Evil machine (I've had that for 5 years and rarely play it - and besides I just like handheld gaming much better).
I'm glad there's something better for when my Switch starts going out. This is about what I was expecting.
Hah! It ain't no switch pro. Just Like I've been saying. Thank God the rumors can stop! Guess you guys that wanted that upgraded hardware will have to wait for the real successor. Nintendo doesn't do the pro thing. That's Sony.
As well Nintendo being lazy and Sony becoming a bit anti consumer with upgrades etc.
The only company really consumer friendly at the minute is Xbox, though the general public don’t seem to think straight when it comes to gaming as sales wise they are still third each week world wide.
Hopefully when FH5 and Halo appear this year and more free upgrades and game pass adding more valve, things will pick up sales wise and make the other two, Nintendo and Sony up their game a bit more.
The entirety of any possible disappointment here is rooted in the subscription to Credib L. Source, esquire, and his I.N.S.I.D.E.R. organization. All while mocking the "denial" of dismissive attitudes and skeptical questions alike. Why not take it up with 4chan, Reddit, Bloomberg and the army of newsblogs now? Nintendo never even promised an OLED screen variant before today, let alone any trace of 4K, Bluetooth audio and shiny new chipsets. They're also positioning it as an extra model beside "Mariko" revision and Lite [at the time], so if it's not for you, it may as well have never happened for you. End of story. But any dejection you feel, you pretty much waltzed into on your own. Let this be a les - oh, what nonsense I speak, this is a fandom here.
ive wanted a new switch for a while, with my current screen being damaged and the joycons holders getting loose. i also prefer playing on handheld mode so im right in the market for a Switch OLED
but thats another thing, its not the new definitive upgrade to get if you already have a working switch, and years of rumors and hoping make this seem disappointing. this is for a niche market when people wanted to next grand thing
I'm thrilled and so happy, why? I hate mid gen upgrades like the New 3DS and Pro/One X. I really really don't like the idea of them as its a screw you to early adopters, this is basically to Switch what the XL was to the 3DS and that kind of upgrade i'm fine with. I have no interest in getting one as i don't need it but if my Switch ever breaks i may consider getting one of these as a replacement.
I don't know... something must be wrong.
I do remember all the Switch Pro rumors of 2019. I wanted a Switch Pro alongside a Lite but as the year passed by, I realized the current Switch still had momentum and didn't need an upgrade to get the more demanding games (Spyro, The Witcher, Outer Worlds...). On April that year, a Nikkei 'report' came saying that Nintendo's 'Pro Switch was actually a full model change and was continually held back, which would explain some rumours. I believed that, thinking it would now make sense to release it on a later year. The Switch Lite and upgraded Switch were announced (Eurogamer respalded it would be a 'modest upgrade) and I was just satisfied.
When 2020 arrived I myself thought a 'Pro' revision wouldn't be needed that year, since new consoles were coming there was no need yet for an upgraded console until 2021, maybe when chipsets finally achieve higher performance than current-gen. Rumours were mostly silent until September, when 4K Switch rumours appeared, Nintendo themselves spoke about their future; everything pointed out for new hardware on 2021.
And this year, as developers are more and more used to new-gen, it feels the time is now for Nintendo to up their ante. OLED and 4K sounded perfect for a next-gen console that just happens to be compatible with your Switch library. Instead, Nintendo serves up half the cake and announces an OLED Switch with some improvements, but no 4K, no DLSS, no generational leap in power (I think)...
While the 2019 rumours were almost correct, there was also the fact that Nintendo maybe just thought a more powerful system wasn't ready, and that's what Nikkei reported about. It's more than just insider info, it's about if it MAKES sense or not. The latest rumors were respalded by Eurogamer and Emily Rogers, two sources that are almost truly credible.
I will think of this model as a replacement for the current Switch, since it's basically the same but with upgrades that make it perfect standard choice.
On the other hand, Nintendo either still has to announce brand new hardware (with 4K and all that), or disgruntlement will come.
it wouldn't have made sense to put out a true "switch pro," which i've been saying for a while. it's not like they could magically make BotW function in 4k. this is a neat upgrade, but not one that forces people to pony up or be left in the dust. i think this was a smart move.
i also don't have any interest in getting it, because i'm a docked player for the most part. so, that may have something to do with my relief.
I'm actually kind of glad the improvements were lackluster. Saves me $350 this year.
@Dezzy70 Yea man, Nintendo is really doing the bare minimum. They know people will buy up each iteration of the Switch and accessories, no matter how lackluster of an upgrade. I don't like that. Between Nintendo being sleazy and Sony being moronic, Xbox is looking like a future purchase for me. They offer the best all around service and most content.
When are the new Newer Nintendo Switch leaks coming out?
@braincandy101
Xbox are starting to look like the console or company to move to.
I have a series x with GPU now and no Switch.
Xbox currently deserve far more credit than they are getting. But slowly as Nintendo do things like this and release no new in house AAA games and Sony keep money grabbing, Xbox is looking a far better purchase by a mile now.
People are whack, if this is not seen as an outright disappointment, as it it probably the "switch pro". I don't care either way, but its a hohum iteration of a handheld, especially compared to the gameboy pocket & colour, the Advance SP, the lite, the 3ds Xl, the new 3ds, its pretty lame
@Dezzy70 I charted nintendo's release schedule over the past 12 years, their original title output is dismal in the last 6 years, its awful, EPD is doing nothing, retro won't have anything for like 9 years more than likely, all their smaller "fetch & carry" teams are doing nothing as well, how people talk up the switch as Nintendo's "Golden Age" is whack. I got rid of my switch for pocket change to buy a Gamecube game. Xbox is a real great value right now, even if I think Halo & gears are in the decline.
@NintendoArchive
This isn't a Switch Pro, as there is no hardware upgrade.
Either the Switch Pro doesn't exist and the next Switch upgrade will be a full-fledged Switch 2, or the Switch Pro does exist but isn't releasing until later. Either way, this OLED model isn'ta Pro upgrade.
@NintendoArchive
Yea not sure what Nintendo are up to just lazy to me its been a years since a very good AAA game has appeared from their in house studios.
Perhaps they need to employ more, I know their studios are tiny compared to the other big guns in house and other third party studios.
Yes Halo and Gears have been declining a bit.
It will depend on Halo infinite to see what happens going forward and also the next Gears.
Buying Bethesda etc was massive and will add so much to their studio teams, especially along with Turn 10 and playground games.
I have a series x with GPU FH5 and Halo I will not have to pay out for like Doom Eternal I’m playing now and FH4.
The console build form factor and GUI and operations like smart delivery and cross console save, let alone cloud gaming as well is showing Nintendo and Sony this is how it is done.
When the games like FH5, Halo and others start late this year then more into next year I can see them starting to turn the tide on Nintendo and Sony. Microsoft have the trillion dollars and power and shear size to take this all the way.
Oh lordy, here come the Nintendoomers to explain everything that is wrong about this and Nintendo don't know a thing about making video game consoles. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Nintendo were busy selling 80 million Switches and getting ready to sell a whole lot more.
(Edited to add: my bad, it was only 85 million...)
@YoungLink64
Being honest I sold my switch and have a series x now with game pass ultimate.
I have had every home Nintendo console since launch but the Switch will probably be my last now.
I have massively invested in the Xbox eco system and currently loving it. Also the future with them is looking seriously good.
Every about the series x is top notch, yes slow with games but this fall it’s picking up and into next year. Also the big hitting third party games come to series X, so I get that joy as well., even they have to pay for them 😂
I've been calling this for months ...
You're all being duped, btw, this isn't an upgrade or a new model or any sort of "next switch". It's simply a reaction to supply lines for the Switch screen being constrained. They weren't able to buy screens in the numbers they wanted, but found a supplier for OLEDs so ... NEW SWITCH EVERYONE!
I have to admit, this is pretty disappointing. I would rather have a tv-only pro version of the Switch that I could plug into my 65 inch oled. I rarely play mine in handheld mode and my wireless ac router is competent enough to handle Splatoon 2.
If the screen is 7" but 720p the pixel density is very low.
@westman98 well the pro only exists in the people's imaginations then, whatever the intention of Nintendo, this upgrade is hardly substantial, especially since they did not use it as a springboard to demonstrate needed hardware improvements, the joycons for instance, either way this might as well be the pro, as they will not release any such model, until this one has reached saturation point in the market.
@JasmineDragon watch it with your poms poms! u almost grazed me on the face.
They should have slotted the OLED in at $299 and just phased out the old unit.
That's what they did with the original when they had the better battery & screen.
Then you would still have just current Switch and Lite. This is messy now with three units.
All I see coming out of this, is disappointment and customer confusion. Bad look for N.
@Dezzy70, agreed, if they charge the same for games, as everyone else, they can bulk up their studios, enough with the ma & pap shop routine from them & the pokemon company. Its not like developers haven't been developing games in HD, on consoles, since 2005. Since I brought up halo, Halo 4 might not be the series high point, but its striking compared to anything on switch, especially those cruddy looking doom ports, & all done on x360.
Oh your Nintendo isn’t powerful enough? What, you were saying that 10 years ago too? 15 years ago? Lol
There was never a Switch Pro. There was this and the Switch 2 in development same time. Leakers got details of both and merged them thinking the leaked info related to a single bit of kit.
GPU progress in the handheld world moves at a slower pace than in the desktop/console world. So a mid gen refresh as powerful as the rumours claimed would never have made sense. As when the Switch 2 did launch it could NEVER be much more powerful which would lead to disappointment and a underwhelmed reaction.
Switch 2 for 2023 earliest.
@NintendoArchive
Nintendo console sales wise are doing good.
But in the not to distant future if and when they go 4K maybe with all the bells and whistles they are going to need to employ. They take to long with old graphics and effects to create a good AAA game, let alone a full on 4K with 4K assets and texture detailed worlds in hdr, ray tracing etc.
If they get to far behind in graphical world and don’t move forward and expand and grow their in house AAA team developers they will get bypassed by gamers at some point.
And sometimes I think Nintendo deserves to get bypassed.
@NinChocolate the wii & wii u were one generation behind, not two.
There's your Switch Pro, and with this, all that pointless especulation has been proved to be just BS, and finally, people will stop talking about it. A cosmetic change like that was the right thing for Nintendo to do.
@Wavey84
Totally agree, I had wii u, so it’s been even tougher for me of late.
Also lots of those other games you mentioned are made by out of house studios.
So god knows what their in house AAA studios have been doing, they are resting on their laurels as the Switch is selling well.
I hope it bites them in the arse as they need a good kick up the arse, they been to busy making theme parks, Lego and lots of merchandise and card board toys and other stuff that is not AAA games.
It’s was funny today, I heard the news late about Switch OLED, read the headlines, panicked and preordered one at Game UK.
Went back read the articles properly, thought what no real docked improvements and cancelled my preorder. No sale Nintendo.
The thing is if they had more AAA games coming this year say BOTW2, Odyssey 2 and say Bayonetta 3 or Pikmin 4, I would have got a Switch OLED and kept my preorder.
Oh well, one less sale for Nintendo and a Series X with GPU for me.
@Dezzy70 Xbox's problem is it doesn't have appealing exclusives, especially not to the kind of gamers that would buy Nintendo and Sony. Their IPs tend to be generic bro games with no creativity, generic gritty shooter games, generic car sim racing games, generic ARPGs, their games seem to just check boxes for whatever popular genre is out there instead of trying to think of something fun. I like what Microsoft is doing with Game Pass, but there's just little to nothing I want to play on it, I'd rather see Nintendo or Sony adopt their own equivalents with their exclusives instead.
@Bolt_Strike Wow I couldn't disagree more. The variety is much bigger than that on Xbox and increasing steadily with what Xbox Game Studios are doing.
@ArmenianJedi13 How would a graphic and performance upgrade be dissapointing? That's the whole point of a "Pro" model. Nintendo did the most basic laziest thing they could here.
@Edu23XWiiU how on earth was this joke the right thing to do?
@JasmineDragon Here come the Nintendrones that feel they have to defend another garbage decision by a multimillion dollar company.
@Wavey84 I agree with you! As much as I love Nintendo's classics I'm quite disappointed with their recent output, including software and hardware. I am a Wii U owner so Switch's disappointment is even bigger for me.
@Dezzy70 Saying the MS is the way to go is pure BS.
By the way, MS (a trillion company) loves you because they give you stuff for "free" and cheap. I'm sure they do it because they care about you, therefore MS is the way to go! /s
People needs to stop being this naïve.
P.S. Without any other internal upgrades, this Switch OLED is unnecessary.
@GamerDad66
Nothing happens in a vacuum and agency isn't always with Nintendo.
OLEDs are primary used in high end smart phones and smart TVs ... devices that are seeing huge manufacturing reductions because of the chip shortage.
At the same time, Nintendo is barely meeting demand for the Switch and on the last earning call warned of possible shortages come holiday 2021.
So here is your solution; a OLED manufacture desperate to sell as there orders get cancelled, and a company desperate to manufacture as much product as possible. Cue the music! Tale as old as time ...
Not everything is a multi-year multi-step plan. Sometimes you shot an e-mail to you engineers saying "Hey we got a line on real cheap OLEDs, can you do anything with them?"
@HeadPirate And when they run out of chips they'll release a Switch with a more available chip as this article suggests. People can be disappointed with this model for several reasons but I find outrageous that the joy-cons are the same quality.
I was hoping for a bit more in the upgrade, but I’ll probably buy a new one. It was reported here— https://nintendoeverything.com/nintendo-confirms-switch-oled-joy-con-are-the-same-as-current-controllers/
—that the joycons on the oled version are identical to the current ones which is perplexing due to the drift issue. I have an original switch and the left joycon has a mind of its own at times. 😒
@rpg2000
This was right on the cusp of being pointless to reply to because you are obviously so misinformed, you’ll just ignore everything I say in an even less coherent response and being SO misinformed that it would be fun to laugh my butt off replying anyway.
What are you even talking about with “MS first party”? No seriously, what is that? Do you mean the PUBLISHER Xbox Game Studios, or do you mean the 22 developers that makes up “Microsoft Games Division”, or both? Either way you’re a bit off, with Xbox games publishing about 20 games in 2019 and 2020 including the “most people would say is worthwhile” Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and MS’s first Party studios cranking out a dozens or so games. Most people liked Waste Land 3. Mine Craft Dungeons is doing well with the kiddies. Horizon 4 is like 2 and a half years, but it's pretty fantastic. And mean you can argue YOU don't like first party MS games, but when they are rating in the high 80s, it's hard to argue that PEOPLE IN GENERAL don't like them.
Your complaint about exclusives is like saying you don’t like an ice cream brand because it tastes like ice cream. Well, yeah, that’s what it said on the box. Just like MS has flat out said their will NEVER be another 1st party Xbox exclusive, all 1st party game will release on PC and support “Install Anywhere”, meaning if you buy one copy, you own all copies that are available on MS platforms. Remember when Sony made us pay $5-$20 to get a digital copy of games we already owned a physical copy of when they made them unplayable on the Vita? Good times!
Your right about the subscription-based future. I for one wake up every day crying about the fact that for the price of a single video game every 8 months I will own 22 games shown by MS at E3 the day they are released. I died a little inside when I went to drop $60 on “The Medium” only to realize it was a day one game pass and I already owned it. This truly is a dystopian nightmare.
MS is the ONLY ones that buy studios and stop making cross platform games? I guessed I missed the part where Bend Studio, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, Sucker Punch and Insomniac all made cross platform games after they were bought by Sony. Great to know Sunset Overdrive 2 wasn’t cancelled when Sony bought Insomniac after all … wait … it still was? Weird. Are you just mad that MS has the money to buy BIGGER studios then Sony and Nintendo? Because if Sony had the money, they would have bought Bethesda and made the whole thing Sony exclusive in a heartbeat.
I mean there is "I'm a fan boy and I'm mad so here are some points that are a stretch" and that's fine, we all do that from time to time. But you go all the way to "I am completely detached from reality."
Imagine thinking Nintendo would make a more powerful switch for no other reason besides for 4k visuals during a chip shortage in the middle of a global pandemic.
I had a feeling the new switch would just have an OLED screen and some slight improvements.
If they do do a '4k' thing, it'll be a dock that has some processing power in it in order to-- at the least upscale to 4k. Its just not a priority for them.
Pro is coming. There is a reason GTA V is not on Switch yet. It will come out when the pro does right after the new Zelda.
@AugustusOxy
Sure you did.
LOL. Seriously? If you guys were actually taking those crazy rumors seriously then you honestly brought the disappointment on yourself.
If the "Switch Pro" had released with all the crazy stuff people were basically treating as "fact" then it would have probably been 450-600 dollars.
And yes, I told you so. I have been saying for years now that you shouldn't take all the rumors seriously. Even those from so-called "reputable" sources like Eurogamer and Bloomberg. I was right, people were either throwing mud at the wall with wild guesses, or were maliciously making things up to generate clicks - and not just to generate clicks on those articles. Now that we have the simple upgrade that we got, all those outlets can profit off of the "disappointment" that is the upgrade that we were never promised and had no reasonable reason to believe was coming.
@shgamer
I would've upgraded, but I didn't want to pay extra money and go through a tedious process of transferring data over, ESPECIALLY since I have Ambassador status.
@Heavyarms55
I have much, much respect for you. No matter what we say, people will always set these unrealistic expectations from "rumours." More like glorified speculation.
I honestly think whoever was leaking that info to sites like Bloomberg about the 4K screen, all these improved specs and announcing it before E3...they were just trolling. Probably someone inside Nintendo laying a trap for someone to see if information would end up in the press. A Wagatha Christie style set up, and they took the bait. Needless to say, I'll never buy into rumours like this ever again especially if it comes from a site like Bloomberg. They clearly got fed bogus info.
@Sjmaster @NintendoArchive Nah, I'm far from a cheerleader or a Nintendrone. Nintendo make plenty of crazy decisions and things that don't work for me, and I don't support everything they do. I don't even buy a lot of their first-party games, and I own a PS4.
But the Switch gets the lion's share of my playtime, because the weird, goofy, underpowered hybrid thing just works for me, and for TONS of other people. I'm buying games every other week, because every game maker I like is pumping out games for it, and they just do more for me than what I've seen on the PS4. And the Switch makes it so convenient to play RPGs and strategy games.
It's hella nice to see things in their full cinematic glory on the PS4. I've played HZD and Cities Skylines on it and was blown away. That power is really, really nice. And a couple of my friends have told me the PS5 is that much better. I can't hate on that.
It doesn't change the fact that the Switch is the perfect device for me and I don't need for it to change much. Amd it doesn't change the fact that tbe Switch has been a runaway success so far, despite many, many people writing it off from even before it launched.
I give credit to Sony and even to MS even though I'm much less familiar with the XBox family. But you gotta give Nintendo their credit, too. They're not exactly failing. And we're getting a lot of games - just not that many from Nintendo themselves.
(Sorry I wrote a book)
If I can get $200 from my OG Switch on trade-in, I’ll upgrade. I play almost exclusively in handheld so the upgraded battery life (compared to the v1 model) and the larger, better screen would entice me for $149.
@ModdedInkling People walked right into this. There was nothing, I mean nothing concrete to support the rumors (rumours? Is that the British spelling?).
So-called leaks and anonymous sources without even pictures or documents to back them up? The way I see it, it's one of the following:
1. Speculation based on circumstantial evidence that suggests the outcome they claim.
2. Wild speculation based on little to no evidence at all or only the vaguest "industry trends" - which is always a terrible way to judge Nintendo, because they don't care what industry trends are and do what they want for better or worse.
3. Malicious intent - fake leaks made up by people credible enough to be taken seriously or fake leaks made up by someone impersonating someone with credibility or fake leaks made up by the news outlet to generate buzz and attention. Only to have this "disappointment" happen and let them write more articles.
@Heavyarms55
Yes, "rumours" is the UK spelling, but I'm Canadian and both spellings are used here.
It's unfortunate how bad of an influence the rest of the video games industry has on Nintendo, particularly when media outlets always over-exaggerate on the "console wars"
Not really a necessary, or highly desired, upgrade. It is definitely Switch XL+
@Heavyarms55 nothing concrete? Literally everything about this console was part of the leaks sans the performance upgrade, from the screen size to the SurfacePro kick stand, how do you explain that if they weren't at least a little concrete? Wet pavement at the least. From very reliable sources.
Looks so much better with the bigger screen and smaller bezels. Why didn't Nintendo put a 7 inch LCD in the original?
I expect the Switch Pro to come out before Christmas.
My oh broke a few months ago so for me this is a day one: what I would have loved is a dockable lite with a larger Oled screen 1 that would have been perfect for me .
Still, I’m good with this, despite not being wild about the color scheme.
May Disappoint? It will Disappoint.
Worst part of the Switch is it’s screen. I’m all over this. Nintendo said they weren’t releasing a “pro” a million times.
@tamantayoshi
The Nikkei Newspaper in Japan quotes the CEO as saying that the Switch, now in the 5th year, is halfway through its lifecycle and takes that to mean that the lifecycle of the Switch will likely be 10 years, so we are looking at a 2027 release for a completely new system (there may of course be a small upgrade along the way).
任天堂、スイッチ小幅改良で挑む「ライフサイクル10年」:日本経済新聞

(sorry, paywalled and Japanese only, but I did want to give the reference)
@Scoopz
If you look at mobile chips in the smartphone and tablet industry, the gpu performance increases year over year are actually quite impressive (even more so than the cpu improvements).
Take the Geekbench Metal (i.e. graphics) benchmarks for Apple chips as an example, and this doesn’t even include the M1 chip in the iPad Pro.
https://browser.geekbench.com/ios-benchmarks
I would be surprised if desktop gpus have had the same speed kind of speed increases in the past year.
I'm not offended by the way Nintendo handled the OLED, it's just a bit odd. Nearly every feature displayed only affects handheld users, and so I expected a new switch that was perfect for docked mode because we already have a switch that was made for handheld players, the lite. I think the lite is simply better if you strictly play in handheld mode because its lighter, cheaper, and has an ACTUAL D-PAD YEAHHHHHHH.
The disappointment is the media and leakers kept saying the rumours related to a Switch "Pro", and with that comes very specific thinking of PS4 Pro - a beefed up, premium priced model for premium players that would sell beside a base model. If we thought about Nintendo's decades of habits, it would always be a minor upgrade. I've been saying it for months and years (see below). Personally, the model looks nice. I doubt I'd buy it unless they release the core system by itself. I don't need extra joycons or docks or anything else. Just the core system.
Mar 2019
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/03/rumour_this_years_budget_switch_could_take_the_2ds_route_and_ditch_a_killer_feature
The so-called "pro" version won't be anything of the sort. Nintendo simply don't have separate, more powerful, versions of their consoles selling side by side. They do replacement systems, so it would be an updated version, and would replace the current one. I expect much of the update is better screen, battery, storage, kickstand and slightly more powerful to benefit frame-rate and resolution. The current Switch won't become redundant or unable to play certain games.
I am not disappointed. I think I will get one when my switch inevitably breaks, due to poor flimsy construction. The Oled's tiny improvements will be the silver lining when I need to buy a replacement. It reminds me of Microsoft surface, that updates one port or adds a little more flexibility to the kick stand and maybe a different colour. One of the surface line actually shipped with a WEAKER processor than the gen before it. At least Nintendo don't do that! Lol.
So I'm not disappointed by the announcement really. I think it could've done more but for what it did it made a good few necessary improvements on the Switch V2. I'm excited about the OLED screen but almost as much, the wired Ethernet jack on the dock. However; something taints that a little for me. Namely, is the Ethernet jack a Gigabit Ethernet rated jack or a 10/100 Base T Ethernet jack? Nintendo hasn't revealed that yet. If it's 10/100 Base T then it's going to be very far behind as most home networks that use wired Ethernet use Gigabit over 10/100 Base T now and 10/100 Base T compared to Gigabit isn't worth writing home about these days. I'll be interested to find out more about the Ethernet jack on the dock in the future if Nintendo reveals that the answer to that key question. Out!
The Nintendo Switch is, and probably will be a money-making machine for quite some time for Nintendo. It's selling FAR beyond Nintendo's expectations and is still flying off the shelves today with no obvious signs of stopping.
I understand that people are disappointed that there's no Pro yet, but I never expected one when normal Nintendo switches are still selling like hotcakes. Don't forget Nintendo's a business, so putting out a switch pro at this point would hamper the current Switches sales. They will reveal the Switch pro at just the right timing, but that timing is most definitely not now, I mean, they can get away with selling a console with specs that were from 2017 at a high price, and the specs were even on the lower end back then. This development isn't surprising IMO.
I bought my Switch around 2018 and I'm still happy with it, despite fully knowing about the capabilities of the most cutting-edge technology. I'm no so concerned with hardware, as long as I'm still having fun with it.
@rpg2000
Only time will tell and we will see
I shall be playing Xbox new AAA games this fall FH5 and Halo and the top third party games.
You can play Mario party again after Nintendo dumped the last one on the Switch with no board support etc, which I have.
You can play skyward sword which I played on the wii decades ago.
Nintendo are poor and lazy my fellow gamer.
Have to say I am very disappointed. I wanted 4K and better performance more than anything else. Have always only had Nintendo consoles and probably always will but when I look at footage of PS5 or even PS4 games it frustrates me that we can't have that for Zelda, Mario etc. They could have released a Pro alongside the normal Switch and let people decide which one they want.
And yes, Skyward Sword just looks so dated! No thanks.
'Switch will still be an exercise in compromise.'
Yes for me some game I just won't buy. A good example is the Witcher. Nintendo biased reviews will go down the 'i never though it possible we would see a game like this on the Switch, a great achievement. Other reviews say the game looks terrible. A Pro would have gone some way to improve third party games like Witcher. But maybe the reality of that it's the developer that wants their game on the Switch, it's more cash for them. Nintendo are not bothered about anything that could be competition to BotW.
Im not sure about the new Switch, a mostly play on a TV. But I can afford to upgrade, thats not an issue. But should i invest in a PS5, would my money be better spent.
I can see that Nintendo have a new customer base who play on the go and think of the Switch as a Handheld device only. Replacing their DS. Established gamers may need to look else where for the big games.
WHY IS EVERY THING MONEY ON THIS SITE EXPRESSED IN DOLLARS? Are you playing to a new market as well?
@JasmineDragon
Nintendo games are poetry. Because they always limit themselves to mediocre hardware, they can't fall back on a full voice cast, cinematics, and visuals to make the experience of a game stick with you ... all they can do is make the game great to play. If you ask me, other then independents, Nintendo is the only company still trying to make games that are fun. They are vibrant, joyful and colourful in a way few modern games are.
Sometimes you want something more akin to a blockbuster movie then a finely crafted poem, and that's where high end consoles come in. Nether experience is objectively better then the other, both forms are valid. But I think you and me and a lot of people get so much "blockbuster" already from Marvel and have been playing space marine in a grey world for so long at this point that the switch swung the pendulum very much in the fun direction.
It will swing back. It's all cycles.
Looks like a great upgrade, I'm so happy I don't feel the need to buy one just to get some marginally better graphics or features. I'm perfectly content at the moment, now maybe if my current Switch dies, I'll get one of these in the future but am really just so happy that all of my games on my current console won't run poorly in comparison to the new thing. Then when they release their 4k next-gen console in a few years it will look that much nicer having all that extra power and res.
I will be "upgrading" mine. Not sold on the white/off white one though it does look good. I might opt for the black with neon joy-cons, which is what I currently have of the 1st gen Switch.
@SpaceboyScreams Lol, alright pal. If you say so.
I’ve been ignoring switch “pro” rumors for years so I’m not feeling any disappointment over this model revision. As it stands I have no plan to get this since I primarily play on TV. If my switch dies before Nintendo’s next console, I might get this one. It’d be hard to justify over just buying a preowned basic switch though. Even if they came out with a fancy skinned version it wouldn’t make a difference, since my dock sits behind my TV.
It’s nice for people who want it, I bet the screen and speakers are really nice but I’m relieved I don’t have to throw down 400-500 on a new Nintendo console this year.
@larryisanassman Maybe I'm wrong but I didn't notice the New 3DS to improve normal 3DS games. Just on the 'Only for New 3ds' games right?
I can't imagine the 'Only for New 3DS' games to be commercially successful. Same goes for the 5 games that where released for DSi.
As soon as devs need to work on making their titles compatible for the new hardware, it's a no-go.
@Pascalkw The progression is good relative to the mobile gpu space but beyond that bubble it doesnt match the progression of desktop gpu performance.
Theres not one mobile game that is graphically more advaced than just the PS4s best titles and thats despite the latest mobile gpus possessing feature sets on par or even greater than the ps4 in some aspects. Theyre held back by the power envelope they have to operate in.
So great increases relative to other mobile gpus but not in comparison to gpus across the board.
So if they had released the fantasy Switch Pro now, the inevitable Switch 2 in 2023 would seem like a miniscule and worthless jump
The OLED and 64GB Ram isn't enough enticing to buy one right now. I already bought the v2 model and upgrade my sd to 1tb. The display works and looks just fine to me even when portable mode. Even if they say this is for new Switch owner the v2 is still less costly and for the money easier on the budget. Bump in price for not much in return doesn't help much. The color scheme looks good but not when you compare the prices to each other. You would expect more for the OLED as in 4K Docked if they were going that route. But a truly big disappointment is what is shown here. They could've ushered in a new gaming Portable console level but choose to take then down a way lot instead. That's the part not being told here they had a chance to show we can do it to No, we can't do it factor.
@HeadPirate Gosh you really do get your knickers in a twist about gaming don't you? Do try and remember that all this is just about games - there are much more important things in life.
"But May Also Disappoint"
more like "only"
@Bulborb Off the top of my head, Yoshi’s Wooly World ran at 60FPS on New 3DS vs 30FPS on old, Monster Hunter 4 ran at a higher frame rate with better textures/more detail on New, Smash and Pokemon Sun/Moon had faster load times, Hyrule Warriors had a higher frame rate. There were definitely games that weren’t New 3DS exclusives but were improved when playing on there beyond the extra buttons/second stick.
The thing is a lot of Switch games wouldn’t even need extra work from developers because they would inherently see a boost from the extra power. A lot of Switch games have dynamic resolutions/unlocked frame rates that would be higher more consistently just from a result of a higher clocked chip- you can see it already with people who have hacked their Switch to get it running faster than it does stock. In many cases better performance wouldn’t have to mean developers needing to put a ton of focus and attention on a new model given the techniques they’ve been using.
@Sjmaster helps keep momentum without killing it. The Switch sells out of its idea and games, nothing else. Is that so hard to understand?
@SwitchForce Yure missing the point of this. There never was a Switch Pro. This Switch OLED was clearly in development in parallel to the Switch 2 and as leakers started to discover hardware news from inside sources they mistakenly merged the details thinking they referred to one piece of hardware. This Switch OLED isnt a mid gen refresh, its just a refined base Switch, like what Nintendo always does with their handhelds.
The 4k, DLSS featuring new handheld will be the Switch 2 thatll come out in 2 to 3 years.
This OLED model isnt for you. Dont discredit it because of that point. You bought into rumours and ended up disappointed with this reveal. Thats a lesson to be learned from.
All they needed to do is to fix the curse of joy-con drift and have a 4k resolution, but I'm not upset because this gives me a good reason why I'm not buying the OLED model. People who already have a good functioning Switch don't really need it.
I made an account just so I can say how disappointing this is. I want 60fps games and nothing more. It can stay 1080p also my switch has been suffering overheat because it is factory line 2, and I have over 4000 hours in it. This is a joke, and not the kind that puts a smile on my face. I was ready to drop 500 for a console that can play Nintendo games at 60FPS minimum 2k res. I am already annoyed by the complete betrayal of the Mario Golf that came out with record low courses I feel like if things continue at the pace they are going they are going to lose my support which they have had for over 20 years.
@TakoSamurai The solution is buy a 8bitdo and get a PS4 controller haven't figured out a solution for motion based games yet though.
I love that fans expected a big upgrade, when that isn't really Nintendo's style. I think the only console they've ever done that on is the New 3DS, and it wasn't really a HUGE change, but the processing did get better.
@Pascalkw oh geez I don't like that idea lol, 10 years sounds too long even with an actual switch pro.
@Zer0TheRadioDemon Yes Ps4 controllers are top tier because they match their price tag because they are very durable.
@Slinkoy1 It's not about 4k... It's about playing current switch games at smooth frame rate (60fps) at 1080, which the new switch still won't be able to do... I mean its 2021..
