Re: Video: Check Out This Side-By-Side Comparison Of Pokémon Diamond And Pearl On Switch And DS

GC-161

@clvr Unfortunately the type of criticism that is of the unhinged variety drowns out the well thought out criticisms because of their sheer volume. There is definitely too much of it. Too many "Pong looks better than this!"

And since that's usual the type of criticisms that one runs into more often (again, because trolls thrive on getting a reaction from people), you can't really blame regular folks for labeling all of them as nutjobs. Well, you definitely CAN do that but that won't change the perception that already exists about them.

And more often than not, the less trollish criticisms usually go like this: "X Pokemon game doesn't look as good as this big budget AAA game made by an experienced AAA developer". I mean, the reason why a GameFreak game doesn't look like a top of the line AAA game is pretty dang obvious.

Either way... the games will be successful regardless. As they always are.

Until that changes, the quality of the games will not change at a pace that some here want.

@TheWingedAvenger To be fair, Dragon Quest never took off in the UK and Europe as well. So its definitely not an 'American' thing why it failed to catch on.

Mystic Quest pretty much bombed in America despite being "easy". So I don't think being easy made the game more palatable in the West.

Also, Final Fantasy currently sells a bit better in America than in Europe right?

And then there's plenty of examples of slow methodical games being successful primarily in America.

Heck, even Sony moved away from catering the Japanese market and is mostly focused on America.

Re: Video: Check Out This Side-By-Side Comparison Of Pokémon Diamond And Pearl On Switch And DS

@clvr I think the issue peeps have with ahem... Pokemon critics... is that they have a reputation of hating everything that Gamefreak makes even before they have time to unveil it.

People outside the fandom were setting up chairs and huge buckets of popcorn before the last Pokemon Direct aired because they already knew how those Pokemon critics would react across social medias as soon as they had footage or screens to back up their hate. And they sure didn't disappoint.

So at this point it all has become sort of like a meme. There is no pleasing those fans. Mostly because they're asking Gamefreak to be Square-Enix or Capcom. Companies that make AAA games. I don't think they got the message that GameFreak is not at their level at any capacity.

It sure doesn't help that those critics used hyperbolic arguments to get their message out. "Pokemon Arceus looks like an N64 game that uses the expansion pak!" "The Pokemon remakes look worse than a low-res DS game!"

At that point you have to think that they're not serious and are just trolling for trolling sakes.

@TheWingedAvenger Wait... Didn't videogame exec's from the late 80s and early 90s bring over Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest (a.k.a. Dragon Warrior) to America where said IPs made it big and begun their rise to fame and whatnot?

I also hear that the Ultima games were pretty popular back then. Maybe more on PC tho.

Re: Feature: A Link To The Past's Dark World Changed Zelda Forever

@BloodNinja Not a chance. I work at a company that fixes PCs and smartphones and I make sure to install that crawling bug on all devices that allowed it.

And it's been good for business! Lots of broken screens!

Re: Feature: After Fire Emblem And Famicom Detective Club, What Comes Next From Nintendo's Vault?

GC-161

@Jakiboy If you can't get over all those begging for Mother 3 then what gives you the right to demand them to give up on their own fancy dreams? Have some self-awareness, mah dewd.

Anywhoo... Nintendo should bring back STREETPASS.

They could revive Streetpass on the official Switch app on mobiles. So you walk around with your phone all day and when you come home you find that all those coins have been already remotely transferred to your Switch.

The coins can then be used to unlock or buy stuff in-game like happened on the 3DS.

Nintendo could even bring back those minigames that depended on Streetpass and give them all the HD treatment.

Re: Anniversary: Stardew Valley Is Now Five Years Old

GC-161

@AmplifyMJ The thing is that Electronic Arts could be raking in the cash if they got over their hate boner for Nintendo, stopped leaving money on the table and release a competent THE SIMS game for the Switch.

When Animal Crossing came out, everyone on social media went wild for that game. Including celebrities. Some of them were even asking "are there any other simulation games for the Switch?". And Stardew Valley was able to profit from the incredible thirst for such games. Let's face it. The Switch is perfect for those type of games.

But EA missed out big by refusing to even consider releasing a SIMS game for the Switch. Only rehashed and recycled mobile-quality FIFA games. That also sell great thanks to Europeans that have a very low bar for quality.

@BloodNinja

Psh! The "ton of people" in your middle school weren't representative of the crowd that I'm talking about here, duderino.

I'm talking about the ones that actively wrote letters to gaming magazines or that went online using Dial Up to rant about how OoT looked ugly, empty and barren compared to sprite based Zelda games. And that to this day still produce long winded videos on YouTube arguing that ALttP is still better than OoT. Because they can't get over the fact that 3D Zelda games are here to stay (unlike they claimed back then, calling it a FAD).

GC-161 CERTIFIED AND APPROVED FOR MASS CONSUMPTION

Re: Feature: A Link To The Past's Dark World Changed Zelda Forever

GC-161

@Munchlax If you said that about ALTTP back in the 90s you would've been crucified.

As a matter of fact, back when Ocarina of Time was still in development there was a ton of hate towards OoT primarily because it wasn't going to be a 2D over-head game like the previous games had been.

I remember reading letters to the editor on several magazines from that era. From Zelda fans that were salty af that OoT was going to be a 3D game.

Zelda fans can often be disconnected like that

For instance, when BOTW came out and it was an OPEN WORLD game, Zelda fans were upset and claimed that Nintendo had forgotten the franchise's roots.

When in reality, BOTW went back to the original NES Zelda roots. Because that game was the original OPEN WORLD game. It had no handholding. No overhead arrow pointing at where you had to go. You can pretty much go out and explore anywhere from the very start.

Re: Try Not To Be Jealous, But Japan Is Getting An Exclusive Physical Edition Of Legend Of Mana

GC-161

A physical copy of the game is strictly for die hard collectors. Most gamers will be perfectly fine with a digital copy. We're not in the 90s anymore.

Absolutely none of the nightmare scenarios put forward as to why digital is not the way to go has never materialized in my experience.

However I do know a lot of people that have lost their physical games. Especially tiny Switch carts.

The same source says that Rebecca Chambers is no longer a white woman but is going to be portrayed as being more Japanese.

Apparently they're going to base Becca on a Japanese model.

If I remember correctly, the character modeler for RE Zero based her character on a famous Japanese actress. But he had to make some changes to avoid getting sued.

So I guess that she was always supposed to be Japanese (or part Japanese)

Re: Random: Well, Here's A Crazy New Theory About Mario's Origins

GC-161

@Cool_Squirtle And it's very possible that the person pushing this theory wants 15 minutes of fame. See how that works? We can both assume who's right. I rather believe in the man that never changed his story of how Mario came about and even has produced the concept art for the character.

And in regards to the Donkey Kong lawsuit, Universal Studios knew that they didn't had a case against Nintendo even before they sued. But they expected Nintendo to just give up since they were 'nothing' at the time. Big mistake.

And besides, its ridiculous to assume that Mario was infringing on the copyrights or trademarks of any company and that they had a case. Considering that such a case would be even weaker than Universal Studio's.

And why would Nintendo even worry about that if they didn't worry at all about the whole Kong situation?

Re: Random: Well, Here's A Crazy New Theory About Mario's Origins

GC-161

Nah... I don't think this theory holds any water.

Miyamoto has discussed often the origins of Mario and has been very consistent in what influenced the design of the character.

And the limitations of that era of videogames is what actually gave Mario his signature look. Such as his hat and mustache. He wears a hat because they couldn't animate the hair. In fact, Mario could've looked vastly different if they had access to better technology.

Re: Here's The Resolution Of Each Game In Super Mario 3D All-Stars

GC-161

@TG16_IS_BAE Selling Mini versions of their past consoles that require them making deals with retailers (for space in their shelves) is VERY different from releasing a digital game. Not a good comparison at all.

But the Mario 3D collection is already breaking records on amazon. Eclipsing any other game (or even console) sold this year. So after the physical version runs out of its first and only print, you can bet your tight butt that Nintendo is going to start selling the digital versions down the line.

Because its EASY money. Which is what I really meant in my previous post.

Re: Huawei Is Launching A New Gaming Phone To Rival The Switch, And It Costs Over $1,000

GC-161

It's worth $1000 ?!?!? That thing is D.O.A.

P.S. If you want to compete against Nintendo, providing a more advanced (and a lot more expensive) portable machine is NOT the solution. Just ask Sega, NeoGeo and a long list of companies that tried that when the Game Boy and DS were around.

To kill the Switch, this company will need to provide GAMES that can eclipse Nintendo's IPs. And sorry to say but a bunch of mobile games ain't gonna cut it.

Re: Original Developer Working On Handheld Versions Of Mighty No. 9 Reveals “Zero Progress” Was Made

GC-161

@Not_Soos Just informing the administrators would do the trick, IMO. I haven't done it myself because this site is not included in my daily (web browsing) routine. So I didn't think it was worth the trouble for me.

But if you're a regular, then it would make sense to do something about it.

I mean browsing this site on my phone is like playing Skyrim on an unpatched PS3. With the game running like if it was a PowerPoint presentation.

And my phone can handle pretty much 99.9% of sites on the net. I dunno what's the deal with Nintendo Life that seems to demand so much of it.

Re: Original Developer Working On Handheld Versions Of Mighty No. 9 Reveals “Zero Progress” Was Made

GC-161

@Not_Soos This happens often to me. I haven't used a PC to browse the web in years. I visit websites only on my phone.

Have had no issues with ANY other website (gaming sites, news sites, forums, etc) except for Nintendo Life. With NL the whole site will suddenly gets sluggish as hell. And typing in the comments section becomes a hassle since there is lag during the whole process of typing letters and stuff. So I rarely spend time here because the whole experience of participating stinks.

The site needs to be optimized for mobiles. Again, I have absolutely no issues with any other gaming, news, sports or forum sites. Its just Nintendo Life that sucks on mobiles.
