@SillyG I strongly disagree with those that throw out dismissive words to quiet down any criticism of anything. In your case "whine" as if to say nothing about Zelda BOTW can be criticized otherwise it's just complaining for the sake of complaining. Thus defeating the purpose of critiquing any work.
BOTW has plenty of things worth talking about be it positive or negative. If you don't agree that's fine, but don't use words that are designed to quiet someones opinion.
Not looking forward to it. No offense, but JRPG writing can range from bad to mediocre. I don't know why that is either. I think because so many of them lack a professional editor.
Just the ones I've played over the years feels like a mess of words put on screen. Bloated, cluttered, and at times poor structure. However, I will give credit that many JRPG's have cool ideas.
@DjinnFighter You are right voice acting is expensive. However this isn't some indie dev trying to break into the gaming scene. Nintendo is a billion dollar company that can afford it.
Plus, it's not just hire a good actor and 1,2,3 boom perfection. Just like live acting you also need a talented voice director. BOTW's issue isn't so much the cast, but the director who didn't do a good job. The director plays the most crucial part and if they fail, the whole cast nomatter how talented, will fail too.
1. There are so many echoes yet many of them I had no incentive to use solve many of puzzles.
2. The game suffers from what every other open world game suffers from by having such a huge playground. Boring sidequests that amount to fetch and kill. And empty areas that are just there to be there.
3. Zelda is the least interesting character in the whole game. By making her silent, the game removes what could have been grate dialogue to get a since of just how crucial her quest is. You could put her in a green tunic and it was just be like playing Link all over again.
I wish she could speak because unlike Link, her being a princess who must her kingdom would lend some dramatic weight to the story.
@Medic_alert True, but they gave fair points as to why. I just read the the Verge's review and the reviewer even responded in comments why they felt the low score was fair.
@RainbowGazelle NL tends to do the same. Nintendolife is the Famitsu of the west when comes to Zelda games. Just saying if Famitsu overrates Zelda, then NL overrates it too.
@Sonicka I mean you find it comical, but you aren't being fair. I'm willing to bet if the article in question didn't mention Sea of Stars, no one here would have even talked about it.
Yet, the article makes the claim and by nature people are going to mention Sea of Stars. That's how conversations work when you start off "x seems inspired by x"
What you are doing here is trying to make it sound like people have an obsession with that last line. It's simply people discussing a game they played because the article mentioned it. Not the commenters.
Im curious if people just hate AI in general. It seems AI has now become a umbrella term for all things ruining earth.
AI has been in your lives for decades now. It's in the electronics you use everyday, in the cars you rely on for safety and transportion. AI has helped create jobs, AI has helped improved healthcare, and AI has is used in creative outlets as well.
AI has been apart of videogames for nearly half a century. It's used in the very tools digital artists rely on everyday.

@Snatcher Eh, if I was in an actor, I'd be in the camp of just find someone to replace me. But then again, maybe I wouldn't. A good paycheck makes people willing to sacrifice alot of things.
@Corvus96 Guess you never played the game about a talking animal wielding a machine gun shouting "damn!"
Some cool trivia:
Shadow the Hedgehog was going to be rated T for Teens, but was toned down by Sega to reach a wider audience.
Scenes which were heavy in violence were edited to reach the lower rating. Some examples include:
1. Maria Robitnik death scene. It was entiryl removed fromt he game in which it would have featured the character being gunned down.
2. The intro was also changed. Originally it was Shadow gunning down police officers. It also featured therm bleeding out as a result.
Lastly, Sonic was actually going to use the word "Piss" throughout the game.
Had the orignal vision went through, Shadow the Hedge would have been the maturest game in the entire franchise. Even with the tone altered, it still is.
But casting that aside, just because Sonic is aimed at a everybody (not just for kids as you put it) doesn't mean it can't do a mature story.
By all accounts Sonic Adventures 1 & 2, Sonic '06, and Sonic Frontiers have mature themes and ideas. Sonic Adventure deals with Chaos who was watched over the chaos as their guardian. Only to be attacked by a Knuckles clan which led him to be angry and wanting to destroy all life.
Sonic Adventure 2 deals with Shadow filled with anger after watching Maria Robtnik killed.
Sonic 06 despite it's technical hiccups was perhaps the most mature a Sonic game could get. Sonic had the right balance of cocky yet serious, Shadow grew as a character who in end the didn't care if the world hated him. He would still choose to fight for humanity till he drew his last breath. That was the promise he made to Maria and he wasn't going to break it.
Even taking it outside of the games, let's look the closet Sonic Movie we had before then. Sonic OVA. Sonic had the right balance of co** and yet serious. Just replay the final fight between him and Metal. During the fight he's playful yet serious. He knows the stakes are high if fails, yet he's still upbeat.
When Metal Sonic was the verge of submerging in to a pit of lava, Sonic stopped being cocky, and became concerned. He legit tries to save the machine that was designed to kill him. Because at the end of the day that is Sonic.
However, the difference here is, this is how Japan treats the character vs how America treats the character. Sonic films have alot of lowbrow humor and dumbed down jokes. This is a choice, not a requirement.
@Wordbonder Reviews are subjective. It's not my personal opinion. Whereas you looked at one review "Nintendo Life". I looked at multiple reviews of the game.
When taken all reviews together in account the game was mixed to average. If it was your jam back in the day that's fine, but my comment is me not offering my own take on the game. My comment was just trying to simplify the critical reception.
I could quote all of them but then it would be a bloated mess that takes up the entire comment section.
@Wordbonder Not really. The reviews were mixed to average. Some of the complainants were it felt too much like a watered version of Sims and too much like a watered down version of Animal Crossing.
It was just a very simple game that didn't do much to stand out.
@SillyG Well, when the reboot Lara Croft series was released hardcore raged she wasn't the Lara Croft from the 90's. It was hardcore fans that made her new design into something political. Even though it was far from the case.
Outrage culture is a profitable venture which makes things which have nothing to do with political into something political. Radicalizing folks for the sake of monetary gain.
Take Disney's Star Wars for example. Nothing about the female protagonist Rey is political. Radicals however transformed her into something political. Into something negative.
So many complaints of how Disney went woke for casting a black storm trooper, or a female protagonist when that had nothing to do with Abrams vision for Star Wars. He was trying to tell a story and decided a female lead was best.
Or heck take marvel for example in general. For 10 years you had nothing but white male leads in the film. The moment Captain Marvel and Black Panther get announced,, "suddenly" Disney is going woke and anti-white male.
Despite the fact these two fictional characters existing in comics for decades.
There is profit to be gained in outrage culture, and that's exactly what alot of people figured out, and are doing. Creating the illusion there is a conspiracy of left wing politics trying to destroy the "status quo"
That this is this mass invasion to destroy the way things use to be.
@DogDetective Well in the past, she's been capable of using a crossbow. That could've been her signature weapon.
I'm not sure of the echo mechanic myself. Feels strange giving there is such a variety of weaponry to help differentiate Zelda from Link, they went with something like this.
I don't mind a Zelda game, and while I do like they are trying to set them apart gameplay wise, this mechanic I'm just not into it personally.
@_Figo_ Well lucky for you the option to not be interested exists. What kind of world would this be if we were forced to be interested in everything? A horrible one that's for sure.
@CazSonOfCaz @Regulus6891 I never watched the original films growing up, so I lack any nostalgia for them. It's the same with the Ghostbusters film too.
The way some fans talk, you'd think these old films were these deep thought provoking pieces of cinema. On the level of Citizen Kane.
Those originals movies are camp. The plot is simple, the dialogue isn't all that great, and the third film features a war scene between teddy bears kicking the arse of well trained soldiers.
Those originals films are goofy. Star Wars as a franchise is goofy. Now, Im not bashing these films. They are fine. But it's not like it was the greatest scifi ever made either.
@elhozzo Well that's not fair to Nintendo. If they took time to build a quality Joy-con that was guaranteed to last for years, that's less money for them.
@MorganaBus If you want to listen to free music uploaded on youtube, sure go for it. When Nintendo decides to strike it down, so be it. You aren't entitled to complain about it's removal because it shouldn't have been uploaded in the first place without permission.
@LikelySatan One of the risks you take on with letting things slide is bad actors who will unfortunately take advantage and see how far they push things until it's ruined for everybody.
@RareFan I'm a fan of Tomb Raider, I did play this game, and Im not upset at all.
Please don't lump us all together. I'm not part of the bandwagon freaking out over this.
If you want an honest take, I find both sides of this silly. I find it silly to remove it, and I find it silly people raising pitchforks over it.
However, im not going to lose sleep over it. Nor die on a hill for it either. I just wish those of who are neutral on alot of these things, and just want to enjoy a medium, stop being recruiting into these tribal disputes.
I can't tell you the many times, I just wanted to talk about something I enjoy, only to have the topic try. and be derailed by someone getting upset im not as outraged as they are.
Ive been in many damned if you do, damned if you don't situations and frankly it's headache inducing trying to deal with extreme groups that have a mindset of "You're either with us, or against us".
@ArcticEcho PSVITA released in 2011. A whole 6 years before Switch.
Using context of time here, it's comparable to the 3DS, which was also released in 2011. In that era, the Vita hardware wise was way ahead of the 3DS. But due to Sony's handling of the thing, it didn't have a chance to succeed.
Yes, the Switch has more features, but the Switch is a dedicated hybrid console that came out in 2017. The Vita, much like 3ds is more of companion piece that meant to be served for smaller games you can play on the go.
@NicolausCamp I believe they are talking about digital games as a whole, and what happens when due to various factors a game is removed from a store for good.
Vs physical where it wouldn't matter, as you can still find copies of it from various sources regardless of what happens behind scenes.
@Chunkboi79 That's what they mean though. To get that 60 fps there are shortcuts made because that is just limitation of portable hardware.
Yes, Mario runs at 60 fps, but what you don't see are the shortcuts that allow it. For example in the heavy scenes, distant animations run at a lower framerate. Not to mention the games resolution is lowered in some parts.
Steam deck has it's limitations too, such has having to lower graphics for some games in order to get that 60 fps.
That is the caveat of portable gaming. 60 fps is something that will require workarounds to obtain depending on game.
@Wexter There are tons of old games on old systems that will never be re-released due to variety of factors sadly.
When it comes to buying old games in their original form however, the prices can be so high, you are left asking, is it worth it?
It was about 20 years ago or so, back when an American retailer called Gamestop still sold old games. I went there looking for one specific game game I played as a kid. Back when Gamecube was still the next gen console.
I managed to snag it for 20$, however when I went back about 6 or 7 years later during the Wii era, I was shocked to find that old game I lost during a move went up in value. Whats even more so, is that it wasn't sold anywhere in my entire state.
There were no copies left. What I had was a niche game from Capcom called "Gotcha Force", and it's value was that of AAA next gen title.
Fast forward today, the American version of that game is on Ebay selling from as low as 270$ to as high as nearly 800$.
I had no idea that entire time, a game I got on whim would became so rare today. I would like to play it, but for the price of nostalgia, I could get the Switch 2 haha. It sucks I lost my original copy. But life happens.
That second half has nothing to due with the first, just with all this talk about piracy and how you should buy the original game, reminded me of that niche game Capcom released so many years ago.

I might get heat for it, but I think it's just okay. Too much is going on, and a bit too much forest green.
