Not a slam on his artistic ability, but the choice to combine exaggerated facial features with realistic bodies creates an unsettling effect that just drawing a realistic person or a cartoon drawing wouldn't have. That might be what he's going for.
On the one hand, different people value the same thing differently, so price shouldn't be the main factor behind a review. If say, I don't own any other device that can play a game that I want to play, it might be worth more. If I hate a genre, it might not be worth to me what someone else would think is reasonable.
On the other hand, there's a difference between review and critique: review as a genre is aimed at an audience that hasn't purchased the work, while a critique is an analysis of a work as a work to an audience that is familiar with the work. A review is supposed to provide some information about what the product is and whether the author believes it to be a worthwhile purchase and for whom they believe it to be a worthwhile purchase. So if the reviewer believes the price to be outrageous, say, $200 USD for a copy of World of Goo, that might be worth mentioning. I would tend to say to leave the price to value consideration up to the reader unless the author considers the price outrageous, but I wouldn't say never mention the price.
@Timsworld2 in say, Guardians of the Galaxy, the director is going to be giving Chris Pratt directions on where Groot and Rocket Raccoon "are" in any given shoot and how to act like they're actually there. If they then change where Rocket "is" in the scene after they've recorded Chris Pratt, they need to reshoot Chris Pratt's scenes too or it will look funny on the screen. Same with Justice. It would look weird if he was acting as if Pikachu was two feet away if Pikachu on the screen was 1 foot away.
@CrazyZelda79 Whenever somebody begins an internet comment with "You fool!" it's probably a safe guess that they're either an amateur internet troll or a cartoon villain.
My guess would be that they'll focus on changing the eyes and teeth. That will be an obscene amount of work, but probably won't change the "physical location" of the model compared to the real actors much, and those are what most people thought looked ugly.
You can care about a project or a dream job as much as you want, but there's a biological reality to human beings, and if you go through enough stress for long enough, your body will eventually protest. I've lived overseas in third world countries and dealt with political and family and business crises for years: I know from experience that eventually that stress builds up for people no matter how much you care or think something is worth that stress. I've seen that affect people up close.
Unfortunately, game design is often an industry that expects you to work yourself to the bone on every single project without any real level of job security. You're replaceable. Since one individual can't change that, at some point, you as a person have to ask whether it's worth going into an industry that will most likely take a toll on your health and well-being. (Unionizing helps, but you don't get to snap your fingers and make there be a union without a fight) The answer is going to look different for different people.
Okay, I haven't paid attention to these in a while. Do they still not even have Switch discounts? I just use my coins for eShop credit, so I haven't checked.
Again, I'm neutral regarding Sonic, but I can say that when my little sister saw the trailer, her response was that the eyes, the teeth, and the torso proportions were creepy. It's not surprising that fixing those things makes the model okay.
I don't want to bandwagon, but that's bad. I don't even care about Sonic or his honor; it's just hilariously ugly and unsettling.
This could be so bad it's good. But corporate committee written movie adaptations often aren't. Cartoon characters usually meet a down on his luck divorced dad and ruin his career through their hijinks, then also are responsible for restoring his career and fixing his relationship with his kids. They do this through the exact same "zany scenarios" and fart jokes in every movie. It will always be live action. The CGI will always be disgusting to look at. It will always be insulting to the audience, the source material, and film in general. "The Smurfs 58: The Smurfy Smurfcation" will be a bad-bad movie. Something like "The Rap-City Street Kids Believe in Santa" is a good-bad movie.
Well that advertising campaign got out of control. I suspect deliberately? I'd say well played, but I'm not really interested in this game. At least Nintendo released Joker before this announcement while people were still excited, otherwise it would have been a mess.
At least it isn't actually Persona V Warriors. I actually wouldn't put it past either party. I heard there's a prophesy that the end times won't come until an underwhelming Warriors spinoff has been made for every single IP in existence. I'm personally looking forward to Burger King Warriors and Casablanca Warriors.
Also, games with interesting, but clunky mechanics are notoriously difficult to review and score, and this sounds like one of those. Vaguely artistic, a clever spin on a genre, but not necessarily intuitive. It comes down to what you value. Pikmin is a good example: Pikmin 1 is among my most replayed games. It is a short, unintuitive game with a number of serious glitches that you will encounter. It also is a charming, atmospheric game with clever ideas that is a blast once mastered. Depending on what I decided to focus on, I could give Pikmin a 6 as a short glitchy frustrating mess (which it is), or an 8 as an atmospheric and challenging real time strategy game. What would matter most though, is that I say all the relevant information in the review. So I think for this reviewer to deserve the critique he is getting from some in the comments, there would need to be clear examples of information he should have provided, but didn't.
Remember regarding the score that Nintendo Life officially has a system of grading that resembles my college's English department: C is "good college work" and A's are absolutely amazing work. I've been here a while, and I suspect that like my college English department, some confusion stems from different professors choosing to use the department's unique system where C is pretty good or to use what most people in America are more familiar with, that C is average, B is good, A is great. So a game that would deserve an 8 on the normal person scale could get a 6 or an 8 depending on the reviewer. And balancing multiple writers is complicated.
Of course, that's probably part of why people suggest to focus on the content of the essay on the game you're considering buying, not the score. And like with grades, people perpetually focus on them when they're told not to anyway.
Immature, but really tame. Most of the competitive Smash community has never been to a sports game.
That being said, I honestly like watching competitive Smash, mostly Ultimate, but Melee is a good game too. I know that's considered bad to like competitive smash in some circles, but high level play is fun to watch. It's a bit weird how NintendoLife only ever seems to share stories about competitive Smash when there's a negative story for people to make fun of elitists. There's a lot of tourneys and players that are just fine. It's a bit weird how this site rarely writes anything about esports tourneys unless they're portraying esports negatively. And you can't tell me that first line about Melee embarrassing itself isn't negative. I'm fine if Nintendo Life doesn't consider esports a priority, but I'd rather see some non-negative coverage of them or no coverage at all.
The internet is relentlessly ironic and holds nothing sacred, and that's at its best. Nintendo might be surprised by this, because they seem perpetually surprised by internet culture, but they're probably the only ones? And by this point I doubt even they are...
@ShadJV Yeah, I main Pokemon Trainer, and there are only a few special moves amongst the three that are any good. Withdraw for Squirtle is a good punish for long attack animations, Ivysaur's vine whip and razor leaf are great attacks, Charizard's fly is one of a handful of Charizard moves that aren't awful. But PK Trainer has some really reliable non-special attacks. Squirtle's attacks are so fast that he can challenge a lot of slower characters into stupid combos. Ivysaur's up air and down air could be special moves in themselves, and she has great range on her other air attacks. And Charizard has a couple moves that don't take a thousand years to start up without actually packing a punch. So if you played PK Trainer with just special moves, you'd be missing out on most of what the character can do.
That being said, I'm not actually expecting Nintendo life to spend an hour talking about every little thing Joker can do. I'll leave spending an hour talking about Joker's ledge options to GamExplain.
I know this is being pedantic, but if someone thinks that a character's special moves and final smash equals a full rundown of their moveset, then they have a lot of room to improve at Smash Bros...
How am I supposed to learn about Joker's down tilt now, besides waiting until this evening?
Note that I don't mean people shouldn't be excited to try Labo VR. They're not wrong to be excited. But this is one area where a reasonable human being who is not a "nintend00med h8r" could be skeptical.
Of course, seeing shirtless VR Mario in a terrifying pixal nightmare world would be an experience by itself.
It does seem like some are letting their imaginations get away from them, wrapped up in the idea of VR BotW and calling people who point out the screen quality or the fact that the headset is cardboard you have to hold "haters" or "against the future." VR BotW would be cool, but being skeptical is somewhat reasonable for several reasons.
Wow, God of War is good, but I'd place Red Dead Redemption 2 above it in most of those categories. Of course, it does a good job of portraying 1800s America and the decline of Jacksonian values, and I'm a historian, so I might be biased.
Smash Bros spectators regularly complain about things that are just normal to me as someone who grew up with sports. Of course you stall for time if that helps you. Of course you cheer and shout and boo players. Of course you shout "helpful" advice from the crowd. But I've seen both spectators and Smash players complain about all three of those things. It's kind of funny.
This isn't a service ruining problem or anything, but what you can infer from this is that they aren't rigorously bug testing these roms before release, or don't care. Even just sending an intern through the game once would be enough to catch this one, so either they didn't do that or someone caught it and nobody cared. The need for bug testing was often presented by people as a reason why the Wii U and 3DS didn't have VC games that the Wii did. If they're not putting much effort into testing these NES Online games, one could wonder why they're drip feeding them 2 a month instead of releasing a larger number of roms and making the quantity more impressive.
Real talk: why is there not a Nintendogs mobile game yet? It's a known franchise, people love puppies and kittens, it would be easily adaptable using slightly upgraded 3DS assets, it's perfect for cell phones since they're portable and have microphones, you could charge for a lot optional toys and clothes, and it already is made for touch screen devices.
We know what Labo is. Wii Play or WarioWare have more depth. A kid who enjoys the building process will love it. Anyone looking for a quality gaming experience won't. Nobody is expecting this to be a serious gaming setup, right?
I loved Epic Yarn on the wii. Beautiful soundtrack, charming graphics, is the epitome of relaxing (except the train levels with the pointer.) Trying to get all the gems on all the levels was fun, and it was a great 2 player game with a sibling.
I'm skeptical about it on the 3DS though, because I just praised it for its multiplayer, graphics, and soundtrack, and now it's on a small screen with 3DS speakers and no easy multiplayer. It surely won't be a waste of money with such a good core game, but I'm guessing this version will be worse than the wii version.
Really, the only problem anyone is having in this comment section is a gory image being on the front page of the site without any warning. There's no need to be enlightened people looking down your noses at quaint Victorian morality - nobody is saying to censor anything.
Kienda is right on both counts: a warning is typical for websites and reasonable, and nudity has different psychological effects than gore.
Probably is prudent to change the thumbnail, NL - I used this website to find reviews of DSiware games when I was a kid and I don't know that 10-12 year old me would have wanted to see a guy's eyeballs exploding or whatever the heck is going on there. There's a lot of reasonable parents who wouldn't want their kids seeing that either.
I don't want to be overly negative, but I can't shake the thought that I used and appreciated the Wii VC a thousand times more than the NES Online app. In this respect, Nintendo made a better online service on the Wii than in 2018. And neither the 3DS nor Wii U libraries surpassed the Wii VC either, except in having Earthbound and Mother 1.
I would happily give up save states and wifi play if they just coded a wii emulator and used the Wii VC library. I'm sure something about that is unrealistic, but I can dream.
"a person enjoys a hobby in a way I don't and builds a brand for themselves on YouTube what a loser they cannot possibly survive in society" - the comment section for some reason?
It's not as scary as the legs poster, but I think it's still bad enough to serve as a bridge to unity across the chasms that divide us. Whatever else we disagree on, humanity generally should be able to agree that this isn't a very good Sonic model.
It isn't impossible to say "I don't like these drawings because I don't like the art style" and also to say "perhaps there is a different audience that I am not a part of that likes this art." It doesn't have to be that the artist ought to be doing things differently. And the audience reaction isn't necessary what justifies art either.
That Ganondorf does look like he walked out of God of War.
NintendoLife, even from a purely pragmatic sense, posting this without closing the comments section was a stupid idea. Whether this was a wise article at all is also a question. Not impressed.
Gunman Clive was actually pretty great. I still go back to it sometimes. This looks like it builds on ideas from Gunman Clive. Enough to be on my radar.
Ice Climber is possible to have fun with, but the controls are not good.
I think an eshop Ice Climbers game would have some potential. I envision 3D mountains shaped kind of like jenga towers where you can walk on all 4 sides.
There are a few NES games that play ahead of their time, where the level design is thought about in light of the controls, the controls feel nice, and where the asinine arcade level design philosophy of using cheap difficulty to steal quarters is set aside in favor of actually having to master the mechanics. Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, and 3 are on the list. So is Kirby's Adventure. Metroid as well. Happy to have Kirby's Adventure again.
Of course, all of those games I listed are overshadowed by their SNES sequels...
Waluigi has a kind of absurdist, almost existentialist nature. All the other Mushroom Kingdom characters play sports as a break from their classical heroism, but Waluigi only has sports. He's a doubles tennis partner for Wario, who is himself the negation of Mario - third from the truth, as Plato might say. His existence is meaningless, worse than meaningless, a joke. He is stupider, weaker, and uglier than everybody else and has no meaning to his existence. However, he acts as if the one thing he was created to do, play sports, as if it is the most important thing one could ever do. If he wins, he is the superstar, the best, the hero. If he loses, it is anybody else's fault, for the world is out to get him, full of cheaters. He has no meaning, so he makes whatever sport or minigame he is playing to be his meaning. He honestly believes himself to be the superstar, because it is that or the abyss. His existence makes no sense. But he embraces the nonsense and creates his own reality out of it. We root for classical heroes like Mario and antiheroes like Luigi, but Waluigi is the absurd hero, and in him we see ourselves, responding with both love and horror, as one seeing oneself ought.
Am I being sincere? Am I being tongue-in-cheek? Perhaps, like Waluigi, both.
But what is true is that I have appreciated Waluigi from my youth, because he makes me laugh, and because he annoyed my little sister. Note that my little sister and I have played Smash Bros. together since we were kids and you'll have a plausible reason for why I'd buy Waluigi DLC in the blink of an eye.
The Number One, the Superstar Who hits the tennis ball so far With great speed he drives his car His score in golf is under par Some say his moustache is bizarre But songs of "Wah" in my heart are For Waluigi, Superstar.
@Gibb I could never get into Monster Hunter 4's hours of item hunting, but I would love Monster Hunter as a character. His down b has to be drinking a potion - heals him, but locks him into his stupid eternal potion drinking animation.
Look, I'm 22, so I'm between the people who have nostalgia for Banjo Kazooie and the kids who grew up when Minecraft was the biggest thing. My little sister loved Minecraft. I liked it. Neither of us have actually played Banjo Kazooie. From where I'm sitting, as far as Microsoft owned characters go, Banjo is the more charming character, but Minecraft is the bigger game. Its sales numbers are historical. Its UI and design have been influential. It's been popular since I was a kid to the present. It's had a major effect on the game industry and is universally recognizable. Banjo isn't. Banjo Kazooie built a great game on Mario 64's foundation, but in influence or popularity or gaming history, the Banjo Kazooie series isn't on the same level as Minecraft. I'd totally get it as a business decision if they added Steve, and it would catch attention. And a lot of Minecraft assets are already on the Switch. I'd still rather see Banjo though.
Thanks to @Electrolite11 for actually looking at the primary source and providing it. I appreciate that. 90 percent of the problems with the media and clickbait could be solved if people made a habit of doing that and checking whether what an article says is an accurate interpretation of the evidence.
I watched a decent amount of DangerouslyFunny's content on this game when it came out, and it looked playable, but clunky and dull, with boring graphics and mechanics. He's got a playlist on it on YouTube, if you want to see some gameplay and a review. Also about any piece of Stardew Valley related content you could imagine. Myself, I'd rather play a New Beginning again on the 3DS if I was hell-bent on replaying a Harvest Moon game again. But at this point, I've put over a hundred hours into Stardew Valley over about 2 years and am still enjoying it.

Re: Nintendo Download: 7th March (North America)
I loved Epic Yarn on the wii. Beautiful soundtrack, charming graphics, is the epitome of relaxing (except the train levels with the pointer.) Trying to get all the gems on all the levels was fun, and it was a great 2 player game with a sibling.
I'm skeptical about it on the 3DS though, because I just praised it for its multiplayer, graphics, and soundtrack, and now it's on a small screen with 3DS speakers and no easy multiplayer. It surely won't be a waste of money with such a good core game, but I'm guessing this version will be worse than the wii version.
Re: Video: New Mortal Kombat 11 Story Trailer Confirms Three More Fighters
Really, the only problem anyone is having in this comment section is a gory image being on the front page of the site without any warning. There's no need to be enlightened people looking down your noses at quaint Victorian morality - nobody is saying to censor anything.
Kienda is right on both counts: a warning is typical for websites and reasonable, and nudity has different psychological effects than gore.
Re: Video: New Mortal Kombat 11 Story Trailer Confirms Three More Fighters
Probably is prudent to change the thumbnail, NL - I used this website to find reviews of DSiware games when I was a kid and I don't know that 10-12 year old me would have wanted to see a guy's eyeballs exploding or whatever the heck is going on there. There's a lot of reasonable parents who wouldn't want their kids seeing that either.
Re: Kid Icarus And StarTropics Join The Switch Online NES Library This Month
I don't want to be overly negative, but I can't shake the thought that I used and appreciated the Wii VC a thousand times more than the NES Online app. In this respect, Nintendo made a better online service on the Wii than in 2018. And neither the 3DS nor Wii U libraries surpassed the Wii VC either, except in having Earthbound and Mother 1.
I would happily give up save states and wifi play if they just coded a wii emulator and used the Wii VC library. I'm sure something about that is unrealistic, but I can dream.
Re: Video: Player Beats Bowser In Super Mario 64 Without Using A Joystick
"a person enjoys a hobby in a way I don't and builds a brand for themselves on YouTube what a loser they cannot possibly survive in society" - the comment section for some reason?
Re: This Is What Sonic The Hedgehog Probably Looks Like In His Upcoming Movie
It's not as scary as the legs poster, but I think it's still bad enough to serve as a bridge to unity across the chasms that divide us. Whatever else we disagree on, humanity generally should be able to agree that this isn't a very good Sonic model.
Re: God Of War's Art Director Is Still Posting Incredible Realistic Smash Ultimate Designs
Re: Random: Brazil's President Just Used Sonic The Hedgehog Music In A Video Message
NintendoLife, even from a purely pragmatic sense, posting this without closing the comments section was a stupid idea. Whether this was a wise article at all is also a question. Not impressed.
Re: Gunman Clive Creator Brings Mechstermination Force To The Switch This Spring
Gunman Clive was actually pretty great. I still go back to it sometimes. This looks like it builds on ideas from Gunman Clive. Enough to be on my radar.
Re: Hamster's Next Batch Of Switch Arcade Releases Includes None Other Than Ice Climber
Ice Climber is possible to have fun with, but the controls are not good.
I think an eshop Ice Climbers game would have some potential. I envision 3D mountains shaped kind of like jenga towers where you can walk on all 4 sides.
Re: Reminder: Super Mario Bros. 2, Kirby's Adventure Now On Switch, Plus Two New SP Edition NES Games
Re: Random: Waluigi Wins Nintendo's Official Valentine's Day Poll
Re: Random: Waluigi Wins Nintendo's Official Valentine's Day Poll
The Number One, the Superstar
Who hits the tennis ball so far
With great speed he drives his car
His score in golf is under par
Some say his moustache is bizarre
But songs of "Wah" in my heart are
For Waluigi, Superstar.
Re: Random: Microsoft Really Digs Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
@Gibb I could never get into Monster Hunter 4's hours of item hunting, but I would love Monster Hunter as a character. His down b has to be drinking a potion - heals him, but locks him into his stupid eternal potion drinking animation.
Re: Random: Microsoft Really Digs Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Re: Earn Double EXP And SP In This Upcoming Smash Bros. Ultimate Spirit Board Event
The only one of these spirit events that caught my attention at all was the Mario one - I did put enough time into it to grab the Mario Party spirits.
Re: Random: Major League Baseball Stadium Plays Host To Big Screen Mario Kart In Offseason
@SmileMan64 I think I recall a Conan O'Brien video where he rented a football stadium to play Street Fighter games on, if that counts.
Re: Future Business Shift Could See Nintendo Move Away From Home Console Development
Thanks to @Electrolite11 for actually looking at the primary source and providing it. I appreciate that. 90 percent of the problems with the media and clickbait could be solved if people made a habit of doing that and checking whether what an article says is an accurate interpretation of the evidence.
Re: Harvest Moon: Light Of Hope Sets New Sales Record, Several New Natsume Games On The Way
I watched a decent amount of DangerouslyFunny's content on this game when it came out, and it looked playable, but clunky and dull, with boring graphics and mechanics.
