Today sees the latest update arrive in Nintendo Switch Online's NES app, with four new games in total being added for your playing pleasure (or five if you're in Japan).
The two main additions this month are Kirby's Adventure and Super Mario Bros. 2, which Nintendo previously confirmed just last week. A short video has been shared to give you a quick glimpse at these titles in action:
On top of this, two new 'SP' editions of previously released games have also arrived. A special version of Metroid gives you every power-up from the start and gives you an easier chance to see a special game ending, while a special version of Blaster Master has you starting from area 8. We've captured their full descriptions for you below.
Which games would you like to see appear in the coming months? Will you be firing any of these up today? Let us know in the comments.

Coincidence that they’re out same day as a Direct?
Both are fantastic NES games. While I can basiclly beat Kirby from memory, SMB2 has always been a bit more of a struggle for me. In fact theres some world's I've frequently warped passed and have yet to take on the boss. So, I guess I'll start there.
Still upset we've only gotten 2 games added the last couple months, but at least they're games I wanted to play through again.
Still waiting for an option to purchase ala carte VC style.
Has the clunky/intrusive UI been improved yet? How's input lag compared with say NES/SNES Classic?
@nessisonett Not really. The NES app is always updated in the second week of the month.
The question is: Who cares?
I have downloaded the app for NES games but haven't played a single game yet. I just don't see the appeal of them anymore.
I hope they will offer games from other consoles. It would be great to see SNES, N64 and even Game Cube games.
Isn't the SP version of Metroid completely pointless when it features a password system?
Not long to go now before the SNES library is announced in the direct and available straight away.
Would be nice.
@RupeeClock especially with the NARPAS SWORD password that grants full invincibility, the morph ball, screw attack, unlimited missiles and the ice beam.
Good choices and about time too. As for the SPs... I think they come in handy to play the games with max power, though resources wasted on a 2nd Metroid SP makes me scratch my head. I still wish the SPs were just unlockable within each game so those NES App slots could be used for more games, but that's just my opinion. I always started and never finished Kirby's Adventure-- Time to fix that.
@tourjeff Since all included games are downloaded to the system, I don't think you'll ever want this to include GameCube games. With only a few games that would easily be 10 GB as download...
@_aitchFactor
There's also the ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER ***** password that crashes the Switch and 3DS versions of the game.
On real hardware it results in severe graphics corruption.
I've beaten Kirby before (liked it quite a bit, but the franchise binge kinda stalled afterwards), but it's neat to have legal access to it at long last. XD And to all the NES Mario flagships now, too (counting Lost Levels that I have on VC). Maybe I can actually reach Super Mario World in the visible future.
And a Monkey Paw Announcement - SNES games are coming, but all of them will be SP versions. demonic laughter
Never played SMB2, despite owning Allstars on Wii for years, so been looking forward to this (and wondering why it was absent in the first place).
Awesome additions this month!
I'm surprised that we got another SP version of Metroid. I was hoping for an SP version of Zelda 2, perhaps starting out the game with max stats. Maybe next month.
While still easy the nes Kirby is one of the most challenging Kirby games and pretty beautiful for an nes game.
Super Mario Bros 2 is jusf sweet.
Not being able to just buy these games is still incredibly dumb, but Super Mario Bros 2 and Kirby's Adventure both are some of the finest games on the system, highly recommended for any fan of platformers.
@nessisonett yeah I suspect no SNES games this direct now. Lol.
im also very bored by these Nes games.....really hoping that Snes is gonna be announced in the direct!...but if it does I can imagine the same slow drip feed.......
Can they put the SP versions in a separate menu? It’s starting to look quite cluttered and ugly in the menu selection...
Super Mario Bros. 2 is kind of neat, but let's be honest, Kirby's Adventure is the real star (heh) here.
Too bad Metroid already got its second (and pointless, as already said here) rom hack. When are we going to see Super Mario Bros. 3 with a Level Select hacked in? That would add tons of replay value to the, er, "service".
Unless we're seeing a proper SNES addition to NSO later today, of course.
@thesilverbrick It is a bit sucky but I found that moving them all to the bottom and reorganising the normal games alphabetically they aren't so bad. Especially now that there are enough of them to make them tiny icons.
@XenoShaun @thesilverbrick I also reorganised them alphabetically and moved the SP versions to the bottom.
Disappointing that there's no sort filter available in the application.
Some love from Konami and Square Enix on the NES would be great (Contra online 2P would be great, and FF never made it to Wii U VC).
Kirby's Adventure is an NES game I never really sat down to play, so I'm actually quite pleased to see it on the service.
So...... are we actually counting the SP editions as games? I mean, Metroid is already on the service and already has an SP edition....
Finally I can play the GOTY on my switch
Those of you who are expecting SNES games to be announced during this Direct may be setting yourselves up for disappointment.
Once they add A portable N64 library, then I will be interested.
I already hyped up Kirby's Adventure to my girlfriend, hope she doesn't hate it!
@tourjeff I’ve put nearly 20 hours into the NES app. I’ve played a LOT of Super Dodge Ball, Ninja Gaiden, and Dr Mario. I’m gonna go put a bunch of hours into both of these now, haha. I definitely care.
I’ve also played a lot of Joy Mech Fight on the Famicom app. That game rules.
Wait didn't we already got an SP version of Metroid, why make another one? Also why not put Super Mario Bros. 2 where SMB1 & SMB3 are, putting it on the top makes it look stupid.
@gcunit Probably it's lack of multiplayer.
Great games but can we get SNES, N64, GB, GBC and GBA games already?
@thesilverbrick Can always move them to the bottom as i've done
Kirby's Adventure is one of the better Kirby games, i'm happy to give this another playthrough.
I guess I get the SP, but it really does nothing for me, and it doesn’t take away the sting of their lackadaisical approach to NES Online to begin the year. It just feels like there is no plan.
@tourjeff Me. I care.
It would be cool if Maker 2 gets announced today and has Mario 2 levels
@retro_player_22 Hit the Y button in the app. You can reorganize the games.
Super Mario Bros 2 baybeeeeeeeee
There are a few NES games that play ahead of their time, where the level design is thought about in light of the controls, the controls feel nice, and where the asinine arcade level design philosophy of using cheap difficulty to steal quarters is set aside in favor of actually having to master the mechanics. Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, and 3 are on the list. So is Kirby's Adventure. Metroid as well. Happy to have Kirby's Adventure again.
Of course, all of those games I listed are overshadowed by their SNES sequels...
@tourjeff Nintendo should ask you first before releasing anything, because if you don't care, obviously no one can... Have you called them?
-_-
I wish they'd let us customize controls (and rewind with L) and remove the button prompts and borders to display a full-height 4:3 image instead. Also, why not allow for Game Genie-type codes instead of just having hacked save states for some games?
@Zequio interpretation says 'hi' to you as you didn't seem to understand the ironical question.
Can I just get Nintendo to allow me to remap the buttons? Playing platformers on this thing is a joke when they should be freaking excellent. The Y button needs to be a usable button, especially for handheld mode.
Au'some!!!! So happy clappy clappy excited! As a Nintendo newbie I've really honestly been enjoying NES Online. It's the childhood I never had sad violins so it replaces years of therapy happy violins.
I am hoping for mother (earthbound beggings) and mario 2: the lost levels
Please release Battletoads and a Battletoads “SP” edition with Invincibility and Infinite lives so people can see this awesome game all the way through like with a game genie without dealing with the insane difficulty level. I beat it as a kid but only with infinite lives which was still hard. Great game besides difficulty. Also release Sunsoft’s Batman.
