The Super Smash Bros. Melee community continues to embarrass itself, following the latest incident taking place at the "Pound 2019 tournament" in the United States last weekend.
After Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma won against Joseph “Mango” Marquez in the final, a spectator decided to throw a dead crab at him. After registering what had happened, Debiedma got up out of his seat and asked the audience who threw it at him. See how it all unfolds, courtesy of this YouTube upload (Chesnaught Channel via Kotaku):
Later on, a commentator who was at the tournament revealed the organisers had caught the person who threw the crab at Debiedma. Hungrybox also followed up the incident on Twitter, apologising to spectators for losing his temper.
Hungrybox is considered to be the top professional Melee player in the world and is known for regularly playing as Jigglypuff.
Earlier this month, there was a separate incident at a Melee competition in Vancouver, where a player left the stage mid-game when he couldn't keep up with his opponent's Jigglypuff.
Do you play Melee? Do you follow its competitive scene? Tell us down in the comments.

"The Super Smash Bros. Melee community continues to embarrass itself"
Strangely hostile and uncalled for
No worse than diving by players in sports and crowds watching sports.
Actually not near as bad.
melee is best gaem evar, ultimate sux, switch is waste of monee!
Is it like an inside joke or something? Or was a crab just the nearest throwable weapon
Lol that whole situation is so tame.
Yaaaaaaay, just what I need to know - more lack of etiquette surrounding Melee's scene...
Whoever threw that must’ve been crabby. 🦀
@Joeynator3000 "melee is best gaem evar, ultimate sux, switch is waste of monee!"
Saying the Switch is a waste of money is quite a bold statement for a moderator of a Nintendo related website. Maybe you shouldn't be here then?
@MattFox He was being facetious.
@CptBiasAran Well, if that was the case, I retract what I said. I just thought he was drunk, but you can never tell for sure on the internet.
Perhaps a dead crap can be used as an item for the next Smash game. But being serious, that’s a pretty messed up thing to do. Just because somebody won, ya gotta throw something at him? Lame.
Ha... so fitting.
@MattFox I don't think drunk people go out of their way to write with phonetic mistakes.
@Morpheel Drunk people can't really spell( I do talk from experience ).
@MattFox Yeah, but you'd have key-placement-related misspellings or senseless auto corrects. Not cutesy internet words.
Tears from a dead crab thrown at you? Wow.
Immature, but really tame. Most of the competitive Smash community has never been to a sports game.
That being said, I honestly like watching competitive Smash, mostly Ultimate, but Melee is a good game too. I know that's considered bad to like competitive smash in some circles, but high level play is fun to watch. It's a bit weird how NintendoLife only ever seems to share stories about competitive Smash when there's a negative story for people to make fun of elitists. There's a lot of tourneys and players that are just fine. It's a bit weird how this site rarely writes anything about esports tourneys unless they're portraying esports negatively. And you can't tell me that first line about Melee embarrassing itself isn't negative. I'm fine if Nintendo Life doesn't consider esports a priority, but I'd rather see some non-negative coverage of them or no coverage at all.
Why the hate for HungryBox? He's like the best Melee player ever. Are people this mad he's using Puff?!
Yeah man, once someone threw me a dead crab too it sucks, at least it was not a lobster ufff that one really hurts.
And he got nothing in return? Man, Pokémon trades in my day sure worked differently...
It must be Tuesday, I never could get the hang of Tuesdays.
Huh. I mean that's lame but why a crab lol.
@MattFox that's a moderator???? geez! that's embarrassing
I think the real perpetrator is Sakurai, he paid this guy to throw a crab. Why? Because the next DLC character will be the iconic headcrab from Half-Life. This pretty much confirms Half-Life 3 for Switch.
Frankly, dead crab is better than fresh -and angry- crab, to take in an impromptu fight
Looks like they forgot to turn items off.
NintendoLife continues to embarrass itself, posting errant material from Kotaku of all places.
</snark>
launching of expired crustaceans aside, so long as nobody headbutts eachother in the chest, e-sports remain a relatively calm and collected affair.
Hey it could've been worse. They could have thrown a live crab at him.
@Franklin there's a frood who really knows where his towel is
I guess, in a pinch, you throw whatever you have to hand! Its a shame though, as its tough for people to come out of their shells and play competitively in front of others.
@Charganium But factual.
How much more respect he would have received if he had just acted as if it never happened.
Should have went over and threw the crab back in their face, lol total missed opportunity 🦀🤕👍🏻😬
@KingdomHeartsFan Maybe the crab was killed on impact?
Bwahahaha
Poor delicate buttercup
So much beard, so little man.
Sad.
This is just sad.
@Morpheel I think it’s a Maryland thing lol
For the people commenting on the way the article begins, there’s a lot of controversy going on in the Melee community right now specifically because Hungrybox uses Jigglypuff. And it is totally embarrassing to have a bunch of toxic people saying that because he doesn’t play a “technical” character like Fox that he’s ruining the “purity” of the game. I get the arguments that other sports have it much worse, but the immaturity right now in the Melee community has to be addressed.
Fox is ten million times more boring than Puff so I honestly couldn’t care less about HBox ‘ruining the game’. If you want balanced, exciting games then watch Ultimate because Melee is old and as much as I love it, it’s become too optimised to really be that fun anymore.
Dude, this is hilarious. That takes some real dedication. Acquire crab, bring it into the tournament, sit there with it until the time is right, and then chuck it.
"The Super Smash Bros. Melee community continues to embarrass itself..."
If you ever needed proof that the Melee community is not the aggressive one, this is it.
I think the announcers were the worst part.
@KingdomHeartsFan the event was on Maryland hence the crab. Why he throw it though? Who knows...
did he not just walk sidways to dodge the thrown crab?
The fact some of you are making fun of him... you're stupid and horrible.
This kind of conduct should never be okay at any sporting event of any kind. Not even the fact things can get a whole lot worse than that at other sporting events (see soccer and American football) doesn't make this somehow okay. It was moronic and a display of idiocy by the person who threw it.
Not even the way Hungrybox tends to play his JP justifies this.
Thankfully the guy who threw it is going to be permanently banned, as he deserves.
My fat ass is actually really mad that someone wasted a perfectly delicious crab.
To be fair to Hungrybox, if someone threw a dead crab (or a dead anything) at me, I'd be mad too.
But yeah, I think the whole Melee thing has overstayed it's welcome. Looking back, it's not as great as people make it out to be.
Reason I say that is because it lacks the ambition of other titles in the series (that being the N64 one, Brawl, and Ultimate).
They played it safe in Melee and didn't bother to take risks and try many new ideas, essentially making it the N64 game on steroids.
Maybe it's great for the competitive scene, but so many of the stuff we now take for granted started in the N64 game and Brawl.
Somebody woke up crabby that day.
@Wavey84
Yeah, that's why I don't get the embarrass themselve line, what happened here is nothing.
Very immature...
But hbox could at least take care of his kid for once
Maybe they just thought he was "hungry".
"I threw the dead crab toward Hungrybox because I was inspired by the movie 'Drive.' As soon as the movie ended, I thought to myself, 'I have to do something courageous and epic. I have to throw a dead crab on the stage in front of Hungrybox.'"

That is so random, I am still trying to figure out why a real crab out of all things. I know that I don’t follow competitive gaming or the lives of the players so I don’t get the reference/meme (if any), but I am more invested on the story of the crab than I’m willing to admit.
Marshmallows or balloons (w/ air) would make more sense.
@subpopz society rewards idiocy and irresponsible behaviour at quite a few levels, for different reasons.
I'm guessing for at least another century.
Hey, at least no one got shot. It is 'MURICA, after all.
It's a good thing the guy wasn't allergic to sea food.
@KingdomHeartsFan lol, yeeeeaaaah. xD
@KingdomHeartsFan
Sad, but true unfortunately...
I'm genuinely curious as to why Nintendo Life so closely follows the Melee scene and is keen on reporting its drama
Well, he doesn't much resemble a box, but perhaps he was hungry. Just needs a hob, water and a pot.
Clauncher confirmed for Smash Ultimate!
On a serious note though...Yeah, the guy shouldn't have reacted that way. On the other hand, who on Earth carries around a dead crab in the hopes of throwing it at someone? Immaturity and poor sportsmanship on all sides IMO.
How exactly do you sneak a dead crab of all things inside these events is beyond me but I concur with other comments that Melee has been around for far longer that it should have. No wonder the community is so widely mocked
people are just idiots cause they just want to win
Give me about 10 minutes when I first wake up in the morning and I can throw something far worse than a dead crab at him! HAH!
Okay in all seriousness, this is just stupid. I know the Melee community is a dinosaur and all but once it gets to the point that we're throwing dead crustaceans at people, something needs to be done. Not sure why Hungrybox was so upset, that's free food bud. Have yourself a crab dinner.
That's pretty gross.
@Charganium I agree with you. He didn't go overboard with his reaction either, so I don't see how he acted outta line. Plus, I'd be upset and weirded out if someone threw a dead animal at me. I mean, who wouldn't be?
@KingdomHeartsFan Right? I mean that thing musta gotten kinda ripe in that person's pocket or bag or whatever.
Why is the Smash Pro scene such a toxic place? I've been around other pro scenes and they are positive places.
@KingdomHeartsFan
I'm not offended. Until their culture changes, it is what it is. "Thoughts & Prayers" and all that... 🙄
It was a subtle reference to how Nintendo franchises never move forwards and evolve, they just move sidewards like a crab. Or maybe it was a wavedashing reference since crabs literally dash through waves.
Or maybe he's just insane.
literally im that spectator expect its my friends and im throwing controllers
