In March, we found out multiple first party Switch titles and a quality selection of indie games had been nominated for BATFA Games Awards. Nintendo Labo even scored two different nominations.
The results are now in, and sure enough, Labo has won both of its categories. The first was for being the most innovative and the second award recognised it as the best family game. On the indie front, Yoku's Island Express took out the debut game award and Into the Breach received the award for the best original property. Wait so Celeste didn't win any of these awards? Boo!
Baffles me that Labo get's the respect it does. I am surely well outside the target demographic but I am outside the target demographic for many things and can still understand their appeal. I really don't for Labo.
Lamest innovation award
I guess there wasn't much competition for innovation and family games...
Yay, LABO !
Keep innovating, Nintendo !
So A Way Out won best multiplayer game when Smash Ultimate was nominated in the same category. How?
Glad to see Yoku's Island Express getting an award! Great game! Charming, pretty, fun and innovative.
I totally get the Labo appeal and think the awards are well-deserved. If I was that level-editor kind of person or if I had kids this would totally be for me.
On the other hand I never really understood the attention and love "Into the breach" gets. It is definitely a good game. It has a fun mechanic, is well designed and everything. On the other hand there doesn't seem to be much more. Neither looks, charm, story/lore, ....? Still very recommended for strategy fans, but after all it isn't that special to me.
As I've said before: while I don't care about Labo personally, there's no denying it's something fresh and innovative.
Well what that list says is you needed a Switch to play the best "game" of 2017 (ZBOTW) and you needed a PS4 to play the best game of 2018 (GOW). Better off making a really good game than mucking around with cardboard.
Nothing against Labo. I think it's a good idea, and while I don't own it, I am open to the idea of picking up one of the sets at some point as a good family activity/game. That being said, I struggle to see how it deserves awards over Smash. Respect to Sony though, they deserve every award they get for making God of War.
Hopefully Nintendo has something up their sleeves that will compete for game of the year this year. They didn’t last year.
So the "F the Oscars" guy won an award? Cool.
Love Yoku's Island, the mix of pinball and metriodvania is brilliant
I’ve picked up every Labo so far. It’s a great time with my daughter and family. Always neat and the garage is cool to tinker around with. It’s a phenomenal, charming and impressive piece of kit. A lot and I mean a lot of effort went into making this. Definitely understand it’s not for everyone but I still think it’s an impressive and respectful piece of tech applied through cardboard. Just genius lol.
Wow, God of War is good, but I'd place Red Dead Redemption 2 above it in most of those categories. Of course, it does a good job of portraying 1800s America and the decline of Jacksonian values, and I'm a historian, so I might be biased.
As much as I enjoy Labo, I just can't take this award seriously; Beat Saber >>>>>> Yoku's Island Express
