Nintendo doing a simple iterative generation of the best console concept in history is surprising and delightful. I don't want Nintendo gimmicks. I want a more powerful Switch. Seems like the Big N is learning.
@Quiet2down Agree completely. I just want a good Zelda game. I don't care about the gender of the protagonist in a fictional world. That's a dumb thing to worry about IMHO. The stance of it being "time" or "long overdue" for Zelda to be the main character is shortsighted and prioritizes real-world issues over enjoyable gameplay in a video game. Games are supposed to be escapism, not more real life, so I'm glad there was a real valid reason to have Zelda be the main character and that it wasn't Nintendo getting on some "bandwagon."
@TheExile285 I can understand that. I miss the Master Cycle Zero too; nothing that can be built in TotK is as user-friendly or fun, and none of the devices last forever so you can't even really have a TotK equivalent. @the_beaver I don't remember which npc said it, but I'm 99% sure someone says that Ganondorf is the source of all the Malice that coalesced into the Calamity. They aren't separate enemies at all; one directly caused another.
@TheExile285 Not having a permanently glowing, more durable Master Sword is one reason I keep going back to BotW. I love TotK, but really miss my supercharged Master Sword. Maybe one day TotK will get dlc, but I really doubt it. Nintendo have moved on.
@Yoshi3 Don't get me wrong; I love the old games too. A Link to the Past is one of my favorite games of all time. I just feel glad the series moved on from that formula and I'm excited about what comes next. There's no reason to think a future Zelda game couldn't successfully combine a more story-driven game with an open-world concept. The restrictive nature of the linear, forced-sequential dungeons and item progression was not my favorite aspect of older Zelda and I feel BotW and TotK both proved that the developers can incorporate creative concepts into the series without reusing old formats over and over. Feel free to disagree; I disagree entirely with your statement that BotW and TotK are the same game but one with vehicles. That is at least a demonstrably reductionist position that ignores a lot of imagination and creativity that went into TotK.
@PinderSchloss This comment invites the question of why people want the "formula" from A Link to the Past to keep coming back. It makes every game feel like the same experience with a different artstyle. I'm glad they broke free of the "formula" in the open world Switch games and I kind of hope they don't ever go back. The "formula" was starting to feel tired and stale after Skyward Sword.
Monolith Soft is one of my favorite development teams/companies and I absolutely love their Xenoblade games. I'd love seeing an X2 or even a port of the original X with a "Future Connected" - esque extra story to resolve the ending of the original game. But if they continue the series with XC4 I'm for sure getting it, and I'd check out a new IP from them too. I do hope they keep the Xenoblade franchise going for as long as possible though. There's no reason it couldn't have as many entries as Final Fantasy.
I love both and am glad they're both selling and reviewing well. Botw would probably be my favorite for reasons not mentioned in the comments, but it's a small preference. They're an amazing 2-part adventure. Plus, as a long-time Zelda fan, and to add a different point of view on this topic, I am glad they retired the "formula" from A Link to the Past and OoT; those games and the other "formula" Zelda games were fine for their time but it was long overdue for the series to move forward and move on. Having every game follow the restrictive and linear formula established in the 90s severely restricts creativity and makes every game feel samey. The series objectively has broader appeal now as evidenced by the sales figures. Hopefully the formula stays retired and we get another open world masterpiece, with perhaps more dungeons which are longer and more complicated. I'd also enjoy a more sequential story not presented through memories, as long as it doesn't restrict the game to a linear formula. I prefer open exploration to a linear map.
@PikminMarioKirby I agree with every point except music. Nintendo's eshop music has never been good or enjoyable enough to make up of how much extra loading time is required. With the Switch's eshop already running slow, I'd vote no music right now. Even if music is added without slowdown, I'd want an option to mute it for those of us who don't want to hear it.
@Sans_Undertale I've had either good or neutral experiences on reddit, so yeah, I don't have any problem with it. It's helped me many times when stuck in a game. Twitter on the other hand... 🤮
@SillyG I mean maybe...? I've found decent gaming information, really random stuff that's hard to find, on reddit before. So I don't personally find it to be as bad as twitter, which is always full of angry, uninformed voices.
Would it really cause the sky to fall in if you guys were to implant the images directly into your article, instead of sending us to twitter (i.e. the cesspit of the internet)?
Never calling that platform "X" because Elon comes across like an entitled, arrogant loudmouth. It'll always be "Twitter" as far as I'm concerned, and it'll always be a platform best avoided. This is no loss at all for the Switch. Hopefully Twitter doesn't show up on the next Nintendo console. Games are what matters, not social media.
@StudMuffin I reverted back to my oled model Satisfye grip for the same reasons (I was busy with Christmas and waited too long for a return). It's impossible to pair controllers with the grip on, and yes, the screen does make contact with the front panel of the dock, bending it slightly outward and creating a risk of scratching the screen. Hard pass on the Ronin for me, and I love Satisfye and what they do. But the dockable grip isn't really dockable.
@smithyo IDK, I support every financial consequence possible for a country invading the sovereign territory of another. I'm not sure where the propaganda is coming into the equation. Do you not believe the war in Ukraine is real? How about Crimea in 2014? Georgia in 2008? Chechnya before that? All fake? I think people who dislike the actions of the Russian state probably do so for valid reasons.
@Corvus96 Couldn't agree more, @Bass_X0 makes possibly the worst comparison I've seen on NL in a long time. IDK why people defend greedy rich corporations sticking to consumers, I really don't.
It would have been cool for fans of Microsoft's games, but I am personally not among that number and so am not fussed by this news. Xbox can keep their first party exclusive. I personally want less third party exclusives, and more of those on Nintendo hardware.
@Faruko 2's combat was atrocious, and the explanation was a mess. 1 and 3 were much better, more streamlined, and better explained. Not sure if I am misunderstanding your last line @alanahagues, but isn't Xenoblade already action-based? It's not turn-based, so what is it presently?
@Kynwal That's probably not going to happen, unless they port 2 & 3 to the next Nintendo platform. Plus, with 3 at least, the DLC is very worth the cost, like it's really not even a question in my opinion, the DLC was amazing. If you can spare the fundage give it a shot, it's very well made and fun, and the price is definitely reasonable for what you get.
Not even reading the other comments before I post mine. The day gaming becomes streaming subscription only will be the day I stop buying new games. I will not "get comfortable not owning my games" so any model predicated on that happening is a nonstarter for me. To each their own, but this reinforces my drive to ensure my physical collection and hardware stay functional. If a game is only available via subscription, I'll be skipping it, up to and including exiting the gaming market altogether. Read the comments Ubisoft and other greedy corporatists. This is not a winning strategy, and since he references TV streaming, there's strong evidence that people are getting sick of that paradigm too. Don't do it gaming companies.
@Solomon_Rambling I hope that didn't come across as trying to call you out impolitely; I only meant it as informational. It was definitely worded strangely. 😅
I love the idea of continuing the hybrid concept. I am not fond of portability staying around exclusively or even especially for Pokemon. As a non-fan, I don't like the idea of one franchise, and not even Nintendo's top-grossing one, wielding such inordinate influence over the direction of their hardware. Mario, Zelda, and others should be of higher priority IMHO. Bottom line though is continuing the hybrid paradigm is probably the right move for Nintendo going forward, for at least the foreseeable future.
There's no good reason GTA 5 isn't on Switch yet, so this isn't really that surprising. Oh well. There are other, better games out there. Rockstar's loss. 🤷♂
Not surprising. Nintendo Life, instead of putting a text link in the article, can't you just embed the image into your articles so we don't have to go to twitter of all places? It would be much nicer to just see what you want us to see here in the article instead of having to go to a different site in the middle of what we're reading.

Love this game. I wish the Switch had gotten the remake. Regardless of people's feelings for it, I'd've wanted to play the new version, and as it started its life on a Nintendo console, it should have had a renewal also on a Nintendo console.
@iLikeUrAttitude Not sure GRR Martin is any great philosopher. Giving majority control to a company controlled itself by the CCP is never a good thing.
@Wexter Fair points well made. The only counterpoint I would add is that all the series you mentioned are relatively new, especially compared with Nintendo's long-running offerings. Having a great-selling game 5 years ago isn't the same as having a series sell well today that also sold well back when the PS1 was a thing. I just don't see Sony having the same level of first-party titles as Nintendo, but I suppose in fairness, no one does.
@Wexter IDK, I tend to agree with @Pigeon on this subject. Even Crash Bandicoot, arguably their most well known character, isn't even remotely in the same league/class/teir/whatever as Mario or even Zelda. Said another way, I don't know anyone, nor have I ever heard of anyone, that buys Sony consoles for Sony games. They live, and will die, by the support of the third party titles that prop up their platform. Again, there's no other logical reason they would spend so much money fighting this deal. Their lack of confidence in their own platform is telling.
