ThomasGameDocs did a good video on this which as a quote from the UI team that said "Looking around we saw a number of multipurpose device which could play games. So we decided to return to our gaming roots, making the Switch straightforward, clear and uncluttered"
And Masato Onishi who was in charge of the Switch's sound design said it was a conscious decision to not only make sure the UI was really fast but also to put the focus on the games themselves. He said "The Switch is designed to be game-centric so we ommited background music"
My own suspicion is it was a reaction to the Wii U flopping and they felt their brand had moved too far towards the "celebrity" staff and other non-gaming stuff so wanted to strip everything back to what makes Nintendo Nintendo. Maybe they perceived that as part of the reason they weren't doing well. I do feel like the quality of the games wasn't always great in late era Iwata and there's a possibility people were stretched too thin managing other stuff.
The speed thing definitely wouldn't be an issue with Switch 2 BTW. I hope they do reconsider the idea now things are back on track for them. They do seem to be moving back to themes in many areas as the Nintendo Today! app has them too, even Alarmo.
@thesilverbrick Is that with the Pro Controller or GameCube controller? As I know some games feel a lot more slippery on the Pro Controller due to the looser stick, like Super Mario 64
@Yosher F-Zero GX feels a lot better, if there is still a lag it's really not noticable to me.
Wind Waker as I recall had a bit of lag in the original game played on the GameCube too, definitely in the roll at least which has a slight delay built in.
Another Switch 2 edition with mouse mode and only Β£5.99 on sale at the moment. It has ZERO reviews on Metacritic or Steam so must only be "big in Japan." I'm not sure that it's just a Suika Game clone with cats. It looks like it plays a bit differently.
@PJOReilly If you wanted to add a second game to your extremely obscure Switch 2 games list you could consider a review π
@BaldB3lper78 Probably because Nintendo has that information. I guess Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony would all have to agree to share it if we wanted that included.
@John_Deacon The chart includes the bundle. They classify it as a physical purchase, just as they do Code In A Box games like Tony Hawks 3 and 4 which was included in these charts.
Mario Galaxy 2 - Playing through it for the first time
Mario Kart World - P Switch Missions, currently done 323
Wario World - Loved it on GameCube so excited to play again!
Itβs also a shame Mario Kart World beat out Sonic Crossworlds, if you were to judge it based on the audience reactions to the game title reads at the event it was pretty evident which one people were more ecstatic for.
Well which one did more people buy? The Gaming Awards audience was mostly influencers and journalists, not the majority of players.
I think Switch 2 is making a lot of people people wake up to the fact that gaming social media doesn't represent the wider gaming community. Most people are too busy enjoying their games to care about the endless negativity, nitpicking, drama and misinformation. Not to mention all the hatred people get who like games that are deemed bad by the social media Bubble. Plus all the arguments over woke. It makes gaming a miserable experience so personally I don't engage much outside of here.
Personally Mario Kart World should've got best Soundtrack but it wasn't even nominated as it's sponsored by Spotify so only ones on there :-/
And Mario Kart World was crowned the best sports/racing game of 2025
Well deserved ππ»ππ»ππ» 150 hours in (most of which was in Free Roam) and still loving this beautiful and joyful game that dared to do a lot new instead of just re-hashing Mario Kart 8.
Look out for lot of deranged AI thumbnails coming to your YouTube suggestions soon folks π€£
Can't agree that CrossWorlds is better, with no single player campaign/story like every other Sonic racing game and an online that appears to have an ever increasing amount of bots :-/ The handling isn't great either, the lack of Sumo Digital definitely shows.
@Glassneedles No worries, glad you could get it working properly π No, I haven't played Goldeneye and Perfect Dark yet but did have to remap Turok, the default controls felt like a new level of bizarre π
@Chapapa So did I, it's a really good companion piece to 51 Worldwide/Clubhouse games (same developers) Relaxing, interesting, funny and quirky, a great inactive museum π If it was free with the console I bet most people would love it. But apparently some people can't tell the difference between a bad game and a bad price point these days.
They should give us an update that let's you wander around one or more of the older Nintendo consoles giving you interesting facts and quizzes, plus letting you play unreleased tech demos and prototypes of popular games.
It's funny that people remembers it now with more love.
Feels like the case with so many GameCube games. I remember Wind Waker, Mario Kart Double Dash and Kirby Air Ride getting so much hate at the time, maybe Mario Sunshine too.
So many Treasure developed games on NSO now, gives me hope for Mischief Makers coming to N64 (published by Nintendo in the west) Another hidden gem. Bangai O would be cool too, although only released in Japan so less likely but still a possibility
@obijuankanoobie Yep, that's what I'm using it on, but make sure you get the Switch Online edition, the older ones don't let you Remap the buttons per game
@HammerGalladeBro You're right, although I don't think Ubisoft had many big games on Nintendo platforms prior to N64? I know they had another couple of N64 3D platformers Buck Bumble and Rocket: Robot on Wheels. Haven't played either so not sure how they compare to these two.
Nice, both new to me but I know Rayman 2 is very well regarded!
Though I don't know why they make us wait a week for N64 and GameCube games but release the other consoles games at the same time as the announcements? Ah well, it's kind of an incentive to work on my NSO backlog!
As an aside I brought this recently and really love it. Was surprised to find the NSO app treats it exactly like the official N64 controller Full button mapping and even changes the interface sound effects like the official one!
I really struggle to go back to the official one ergonomically after using every controller that came after it. Find it very uncomfortable.
@OmnitronVariant Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza couldn't be done on Switch 1 though. The developers spoke about this in the Ask The Developers interviews. That's why they got moved to Switch 2 early in development
I'm unwell so just playing chilled games this weekend, mostly Kirby and The Crystal Shards on NSO and 51 Worldwide Games. Might try to get into Chibi Robo too.
I am very happy with it, enjoying Nintendo taking risks with their franchises and leading with some more niche ones, even if it makes their games more polarising. I'll always take polarising Nintendo over safe Nintendo, their games lately really reminds me of GameCube era (probably my favourite) but with better sales and more support.
Never thought I'd get a Nintendo console with a new Metroid Prime, new Kirby Air Riders and 3D Donkey Kong in the first six months (made by their best people, the 3D Mario team, Sakurai and Retro Studios!) and I have over 150 hours in Mario Kart World, mostly in Free Roam. Probably my favourite since Mario Kart DS.
Also very happy with how much better Switch 1 games run on it, often without even a patch. Add to it NSO and all the retro games plus countless indie games that go on sale for cheap and I'm overwhelmed with things to play on it.
My dislike is the size and weight of it plus battery life, so I mostly play docked. But the combination of Switch 2 + Switch Lite is amazing ππ» Nintendo definitely needs a Switch 2 Lite
@KimBread Yeah I always hated forced waggle. It was a pain in Donkey Kong Country Returns Wii too. Annoyingly Kirby Air Riders has brought it back, they should definitely let people map the spin attack to a button.
@Jayenkai I always consider indie games on the eShop to be the equivalent of the old cassettes you could take a gamble on, especially when they're only Β£3 or less on the eShop π
Two of the best I discovered randomly were Urban Flow and Conduct Together... They cost 89p (!) each and I played the latter for 20 hours! Perfect touch screen games for the Switch Lite in particular
When you click on Switch 2 edition in the eShop it says there's a demo but it's just the Switch 1 demo annoyingly.
Not sure if that's a good idea on SEGA's part as someone who's never played the Switch 1 demo would probably just think that's the Switch 2 demo as that's what's implied on eShop.
@stuie1234 Yeah Knockout Tour single player is weird. So many times I barely see anyone through the whole thing before they suddenly all show up again on the final course.
@WheresWaveRace Yeah I'm happy for them to get there QoL changes done before any DLC.
Even though I love MKW and have put 150 hours into it (largely in Free Roam!) there was a lot of extremely basic options and QoL stuff missing at launch that reaked of them having to put it out when it wasn't quite done to meet the Switch 2 release.
I hope they add player flags back, loved seeing what countries everyone was from
VERY happy you can turn the music up, I've been wanting this since Mario Kart 8! I think this is the first time we've been able to adjust the music volume since Mario Kart 64?
@The_Nintendo_Expat I don't think they're not robots. The Ask The Developer interview implies they're people wearing protective body suits and helmets. They said they added these clothes putting adding in the quarter pipes around the edge of the court so they didn't injure themselves on it, lol
@SwitchplayerJohn Oh I hope so. I think I heard NSO sales are a bit down recently, so hopefully it'll spur them on to do some interesting stuff like this.
Nice, but it does annoy me a bit that Nintendo will give us themes for Nintendo Today, Tetris 99, even ALARMO, but won't do so for the Switch itself.
Like they had that beautiful Switch 2 setup music RIGHT THERE, but it just goes silent after you finish the setup They were so close! Put it on Nintendo Music please so I can add it to my relaxation playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6AnEL89g1Q&t=56s

@JohnnyMind Yeah, that's ridiculously hyperbolic but that seems to be a common thing with a lot of the Switch 2 discourse online :-/
