Re: Site News: Nintendo Life is Red, Nintendo Life was Blue

ChibiNinja

Ugh. It's EVEN WORSE THAN THE LAST CHANGE. I know there are those that don't agree, but I absolutely hate it now. Will be using timeline view exclusively; wish it was default. And the sheer amount of red...yuck

Edit: I realize this comes off as harsh, and I admit it's partly a knee-jerk reaction, but site layouts are super important to viewing and processing information, and I happen to feel very strongly about this one. While I think I could've worded it better though, I'm definitely not taking back what I said. I HATE the new layout.

Re: Junichi Masuda on the Future of Pokémon for the Switch

ChibiNinja

So much hate in the comments, jeez. This is why I usually avoid them!

As for the topic...I would really love to see a new Stadium game after all these years. I recently got back to the original two, and had forgotten just how genuinely FUN the games could be, even with their flaws. I love Colisseum and XD and would love another of those games, but battle animations and models aside, they just aren't much like Stadium. And Battle Revolution was...well...I enjoyed it more than most people seemed to, but it definitely was a let down for anyone expecting a new-gen version of Stadium 1 and 2.

Re: Feature: 10 Essential 3DS RPGs

ChibiNinja

I really want to play Bravely Default, but it's just too expensive for me. There was a time when it dropped to around $25 used, but then Bravely Second came out and...the price for the original just exploded...it hasn't come back down since...

Re: GameStop Starts Selling and Accepting Trade-Ins on Retro Gaming in the US

ChibiNinja

Besides the fact that retro games are slightly harder to confirm that used copies still work properly...trading in to gamestop is a terrible idea in general. I mean, have you SEEN the prices they give? They'll charge you $40 bucks for a used game, sometimes that isn't even NEW and previously had a lower price (cough*Bravely Default*cough) but you'll be lucky to get more than $10 back for that same game in the same condition.

Re: Get Some Nostalgia Feels From These Super Game Boy Borders

ChibiNinja

@samuelvictor My main point was that there were some games that displayed more color on it, but it's interesting to learn that it was the games coded for the SGB and not the other way around. (I'm not good with many dates, so that bit of sensibility didn't kick in.)

How was the SGB2 compared to the SGB? Until about a year ago, I never knew a second one even existed.

Re: Get Some Nostalgia Feels From These Super Game Boy Borders

ChibiNinja

@samuelvictor That is mostly true, though there were a few games made for the gameboy that had some extra color if played on the GBC that could be played on the Super Game boy, and actually had those 'special color' instead of the default 4-color mode (though you could use that too in the palette editor thing).

It was Pokemon, mostly - Pokemon Yellow, Gold, and Silver all had this. Crystal was not compatible, being 'fully' a gameboy color game.

Source: I've played 'em. I actually still have the super gameboy and a SNES, as well as a copy of Silver (though it was yellow and gold that I actually played on the thing).

I never owned an actual gameboy - I wouldn't own a handheld until the GBA SP - but had several GB games, so the Super Gameboy got a lot of use for me.

Re: Gallery: A Closer Look At The Aether Foundation, Ultra Beasts and More in Pokémon Sun and Moon

ChibiNinja

Yeah, can't say I totally trust Aether either, though they seem to be one of those that at least some of the people working for them have actually good (re: not crazy) intentions.

I'm actually not too thrilled about the time differences though. Like, day and night encounters I'm sorta neutral about, but the 12 hour thing...that's a tiny damper on me playing Moon (which I will probably be) because I play more at night and in the afternoon and actually like nighttime. :

Re: Feature: Exploring the Licensed Content in RCMADIAX Games on the Wii U and New 3DS eShop

ChibiNinja

Wouldn't be so bad if the titles were, you know, dirt cheap; assets are hard to make and get unique stuff for, and I totally get using premade stuff so you can focus on your game. As the article states, the practice is legal - and it's legal for a good reason.

The problem is that the 'focusing on your game' bit seems to have been basically skipped here, and they're terribly overpriced most of the time. These games kind of end up as those ones where you scroll through a list of titles going "No...no...looks dull...no...no...hey this might be a fun little-NOPE charging way too much for a little game...no...looks like a game I could play free as a flash...no..."

Re: Round Up: Metroid Prime: Federation Force Predictably Divides Opinion

ChibiNinja

Looks at list of reviewers reads the phrase 'esteemed videogame critics' hahahahHAHAHAHA maybe one or two but not as a whole.

But yeah, while it seems an interesting game, it doesn't quite cut it when your average game cost forty bucks. There are just better things to do and more interesting games to spend time and money on. If it cost practically nothing, sure it'd be worth it then, but that's not at all likely.

Re: Random: Pokémon GO Road Signs Are a Reality

ChibiNinja

Speaking of the GO craze, I saw a local commercial referencing/parodying it. It was for a car place, featuring their animated mascot 'Little Dan'. (I think I saw the name right, anyway)

Not sure what the name of the dealer was though.

EDIT: Saw the commercial again, it's for a local KIA dealership.

Re: Review: Infinite Dunamis (3DS eShop)

ChibiNinja

The first half caught me up, but the later parts of the review sound pretty serious. Can anyone compare this games 'issues' to, say, Grinisia? That's pretty much the only other one of these eshop rpg ports I've played.

Re: Review: 7th Dragon III Code: VFD (3DS)

ChibiNinja

This review sound horribly biased...singing the praises, only barely mentioning that has flaws, only really talking about the lack of stereoscopic 3D...yeah, no. The demo is more helpful, despite not getting to see far or learn much.

Originally I was super excited about the game; then I learned how tedious small battles could be and, after playing the demo, discovered that the game is MURDER on the eyes. It's sad, because it still seems pretty good overall - I'm definitely not saying the game is bad here. The problem is that those little 'quality of life' issues really add up. I have so much hate that flickering loading mark that appears everywhere all the time, even for short transitions.

Re: Head of Sonic Team Explains Why Dr. Robotnik Started Going by "Eggman"

ChibiNinja

I know this won't be a popular opinion, but I definitely prefer Eggman. This news isn't really 'new' either; this information that his name was ALWAYS Eggman and not Robotnik has been around for a long time. He'll always be Eggman to me, though I will mention/reference the name 'Robotnik' at times. Mostly referring to Professor Gerald though.

I don't think Robotnik is a bad name, per se, I just don't think it works for the series nearly as well. And puns, of course.

Quick Edit: I will make an exception for the old animated SatAM series (and Underground, though it isn't too popular). THAT version off the character will always be Robotnik to me, too.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life's Favourite Legend of Zelda Games - 30th Anniversary Edition

ChibiNinja

@Project_Dolphin It's only a ridiculous glut because so many are trying to cash in - and doing so very, very poorly. My point, though, is that Skyward Sword didn't have to be a total open world in order to have slightly less 'forced' linearity. Previous Zelda games typically had a little more freedom, and I believe they could have done the story just as well while still giving players a little more room.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life's Favourite Legend of Zelda Games - 30th Anniversary Edition

ChibiNinja

I'm very, very disappointed how many comments I've seen slamming Wind Waker. Sure, it has some flaws, but EVERY game does - yes, even your precious Ocarina of Time is far from perfect. It's a very good, interesting game, with a compelling story. While I can't say it's my favorite design, I rather like the visuals, but even if that's not your cup of tea the game itself makes up for it as long as you don't quit like a fool in the first few minutes. My two biggest complaints are the tedious sailing and the fact that you have to deal with a big 'sneaking/avoiding' segment so very early in the game, but it gets so much better.

As for other games, while I have fond thoughts for A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds was very enjoyable, my two favorites are definitely Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess. Don't get me wrong, I do love Ocarina of Time, more than the 2D games, but I don't worship the title as some do.

As for the back-and-forth debate over Skyward Sword...there's a lot to love about the game. Great, solid story, quite pretty graphics, fairly solid gameplay (despite my initial apprehension, I never had any real trouble with the motion controls personally, nor did my best friend, and we've both completed the game) and interesting areas and puzzles. Unfortunately, the things that hold the game back REALLY present a blow. Those motion controls don't work great for everyone (While I never had problems with the sword, I'll admit to disliking control of certain other items), Fi is hardly the most engaging partner we've ever had - interesting, has her merits, but rather boring nonetheless - in the series, that awful stamina bar (I love the idea of being able to sprint and can accept a limiter for that, but in SS the bar is painfully overused, both in types of actions that use it and in need to use it in puzzles, and the penalty for running out - which will happen quickly - is much harsher than simply losing access to those actions for a while). By far the biggest thing that holds SS back, even more than the stamina bar, is how painfully linear the game is. I actually consider being a little linear a good thing - I hate to be wandering around lost and wondering what to do just because I didn't go back to a town and talk to one inconspicuous NPC - but SS doesn't give you much freedom as you travel the game at all - not just in side quests and exploring, but in the dungeons themselves. (that part is not a big deal when compared to other Zelda games, though) That distinct lack of even imagined freedom really hurts the game. The 'flying around on a Loftwing and diving' bits aren't remotely as enjoyable as they should be, either.

Edit: Oh yeah, and as for the original game...I respect that it's a classic, it created the foundation that allowed the other games to follow, 'old' does not equal 'bad', games were different then, it still has unique qualities, so on and so forth...but it still just doesn't stand up to later games. Being a classic does not instantly mean we should ignore all flaws and place it higher than everything else. (I have the same view on Pokemon - love the classics, but they are not so much better than everything that follows, in fact having loads of flaws, and I find it a bit difficult to respect the more fanatical 'genwunners') The original isn't bad by any means, but while I can understand some people genuinely selecting it on game mechanics and such merits, overall it just doesn't stack up.

Re: Site News: Welcome To The Brand New Nintendo Life!

ChibiNinja

I usually check this site each day, but never joined. Today, I joined for one simple reason - to say how much I despise the new layout. I'm not the kind of person who hates things just because they're new. But this? The site is no longer a simple, pleasant thing to check up on the latest news - it is a horrible mess to look at with this 'modern' style layout. Even switching to list version isn't really much better. Then there's the bar across the top that keeps appearing all the time - sure, it's not there while reading an article, but that's it - it takes up a lot of space, and is very annoying. The Mario background is actually rather nice, as is the addition of the shop (though that's a tad questionable) and the nice ratings/library per user. The layout, though? Total rubbish. I'm very disappointed.

Edit: Oh yes, and many pages seem to take a tad longer to fully load now. The menu bar is still terrible.
