It's that time, once again, for the North American Nintendo Download Update. This week celebrates the Birthday of a certain pink puffball with a few retro treats, while there are some varied and intriguing new download-only releases on both Wii U and 3DS. There are some promising options this week, so let's get to the details.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update details? Don't fret, they're still available right here.
Wii U eShop
Vektor Wars (Super Icon Ltd, $7.99) - A first-person shooter with stylised vector-based visuals, this has '9 world zones' in which you blast away at a variety of robot foes. It certainly looks full of potential, so we'll let you know what we think in a review.
3Souls (Red Column, $3.90) - An intriguing episodic release (part one of three is out now, two more to come as DLC) that aims to put the GamePad to work, utilising the second screen to show a character's emotions along with some other uses. This title also includes co-op, and we'll see how well it delivers on its ambition in a review very soon.
Dracula's Legacy (Joindots, $7.99) - This one's story involves a character being trapped and trying to escape from monsters, all wrapped within a hidden object game previously found on PC. Although not perfect this is actually one of the stronger releases in the genre that we've seen on Nintendo hardware in recent times; we gave this a recommendation in our Dracula's Legacy review.
BLOC (Cragworks, $2.99) - Adopting the table-top game approach seen in Wii Party U, in which players share a GamePad and play on its screen, this appears to contain a variety of extravagant twists on Pong gameplay, supporting up to four player on the hefty Wii U controller. The concept looks interesting, and we'll see whether it's worth a look in our review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Kirby's Epic Yarn (Nintendo, $19.99) - This was Good-Feel's first dabble in platforming with the yarn effect, taking its idea and applying it to the typically cute Kirby franchise. It proved to be a true gem on the Wii and we're pleased to see it make its way to the eShop; we absolutely loved this in our Kirby's Epic Yarn review.
Kirby Mass Attack (Nintendo, $9.99) - Kirby has had his share of spin-off concept games, and this was another that graced the DS. Utilising the portable's touch screen this one's all about using lots of Kirby characters to get by, and we enjoyed it in our review.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Sketch Wars (Wildcard Studios, $3.99 until 11th August, normally $4.99)
STEEL LORDS (nuGAME, $7.50 until 18th August, normally $14.99)
3DS eShop
Gotta Protectors (Ancient Corp, $12.99) - Known as Protect Me Knight 2 in Japan, this co-operative action / tower-defence has plenty to it, with six quirky classes of characters with items that can be heavily customised, along with a promised 100 stages with four difficulty settings for each. In addition it supports local co-op for up to four players - including Download Play - and has a feature where you can create your own maps and share them as QR codes. Oh, and retro-style music by the likes of Yuzo Koshiro. It looks to have a lot of potential, so we'll see whether it delivers in a review.
New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console
Kirby's Dream Course (Nintendo, $7.99) — It's golf, Kirby style, with the pink one being a ball that can take out enemies and absorb abilities en-route to the cup. The crazy golf approach is also fun with a friend in multiplayer using the pass-and-play option that's included here. We gave this a recommendation in our Kirby's Dream Course review.
3DS Demo
Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo, free)
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker (Atlus, on discount until 8th August)
Shin Megami Tensei IV (Atlus, on discount until 8th August)
Epic Word Search Collection (Lightwood Games, $5.99 until 4th August, normally $7.99)
Sadame (Rising Star Games, $7.99 until 25th August, normally $14.99)
Snow Moto Racing 3D (Zordix AB, $3.99 until 4th August, normally $7.99)
Ninja Battle Heroes (Tom Create, on discount until 26th August)
Runny Egg (Tom Create, on discount until 26th August)
Glory of Generals (CIRCLE Entertainment, on discount until 18th August)
Samurai Defender (CIRCLE Entertainment, on discount until 18th August)
That's everything for the North American Nintendo Download Update this week - let us know what you're planning to download in the poll and comments below.

Robobot demo, huh? ^_^ Didn't expect that, thought Kirby was a franchise that sold itself! (I preordered it & Triple Deluxe, so yeah)
I have everything here I would want already. I hope we get more turbo grafix titles soon.
Had I not have those two Kirby games, I would have interest in downloading them. Nothing for me this week.
Nothing for me this week, done own Kirby's Epic Yarn. Don't own a 3ds but if I did I would get Kirby: Planet Robobot (3DS demo).
Already own the Kirby games so nothing for me this week. Still waiting on the remaining Pokemon VC games that we're suppose to be getting for the rest of the summer. Those and the Bomberman games
Epic Yarn! So happy to see it arriving on the eShop. I own the disc but I strongly recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it yet.
I'll settle for Mass Attack.
The "Eccentric" Ninja again? xD
nothing for me since I dont have any money for games this week. Sometime in August I will get Kirby Epic Yarn and the Pokemon games that have been released for VC.
Should I purchase a New 3ds xl or 2ds now or just wait for the NX to come out?
Oh mylanta...!
Naked ? Naked ?? Naked Ninja ??
XD XD XD
I can't wait for Street Fighter on the 3DS virtual cons...oh... ;(
@Ninten-san An opportunity to share its majesty once again.
I want:
Gotta Protectors for me. I always like those types of action/tower defense games where you can mount defenses and be part of the fight yourself instead of just watching from the sidelines.
@mowerdude I can't believe you don't own a 3DS!!!! If you are hesitant or unsure, at least get a 2dS. You won't get the 3D gameplay, but at least you can play all the amazing games you have been missing out on . . . And there's a lot!
@Captain_Gonru How's Mass Attack? We own 3 3DS and 1 copy of the game cartridge, but if it's good I might be willing to pay $10 to play it on my TV.
Another demo? Wow, I'm even more impressed. Maybe that's their summer plan, 1 demo a week every week. Not as good as new games, but maybe it will remind people to go back and buy some of those older games.
Just Kirby Mass attack for me. By the way, does anyone think we will still have VC on the NX if the rumor holds true that it's just a portable console utilizing cartridges? If it's a radical departure from Wii/ Wii U I assume we can't transfer VC games to the NX.
@madelk the same. Was ready to buy 2 of them. I've learned to curb my expectations on Thursdays when it comes to Nintendo doing what I think they will do.
Meh. My money is safe another week.
@ThomasBW84
To quote @AlexOlney: that's some quality thumbnail work right there.
@rjejr @BarbieGurl777
Mass Attack is great. Really great.
I always describe it as a "Pikmin Platformer". Take the concept of Pikmin where you flick multiple Pikmin at a target, or coordinate Pikmin running from something, or navigate a maze, and change Pikmin to 10 Kirbys.
Really cool, really different game.
Gotta Protectors sounds really cool, but 3DS
One day all these great little games will be on the NX right? And I'll be able to play them on my big screen with the fam. Hopefully all these great 3DS developers and IPs move right on to the NX and... well, all those rumors turn out to be accurate enough for this dream to occur.
So much Kirby for this week, I love it. Definitely going to get the Kirby Robobot demo.
@vincentgoodwin I've thought since the first time I saw it Mass Attack was a Pikmin game they couldn't quite get to work so they slapped a Kirby skin on it. I like both franchises so that works for me.
I guess in light of all the NX leaks I should add Pikmin 4 may be a 2D platformer like this, it's been nealry complete for almost a eyar yet they haven't shown a single screenshot yet, so I'm thinking 2D. Hopefully I'm wrong though. It will be on NX by summer 2017 either way.
I already own Mass Attack and Epic Yarn (I HIGHLY recommend both of them by the way), but I might get Dream Course in a little bit.
This list says Sadame is on sale, but it doesn't seem to be listed as such in the eshop. Did I oversleep that much?
Well I'm gonna try to get devil survivor 2
so it's been a few months since star fox was released, and I've been anticipating the snes version to be released but week after week it never comes through. Is there some other reason why Star Fox snes hasn't been released on VC? What am I missing?
Just the demo for me this week.
@iflywright Licensing issues regarding the Super FX chip.
Shouldn't uhhhh.... That ninja's thong suspenders..... You know.... Be sliced by his sword? Shudder.... ugh....
I hope I see Pokemon Crystal on one of these
Thong Ninja confirmed!
My friend said Kirby's Mass Attack was excellent!!!!
Nothing for me this week. Was pretty unimpressed with the blast ball demo.
Can't say no to Kirby. XDD
I'm happy to see Nintendo actually support the snes 3DS VC, but I'm really hoping that we soon see more third-party contributions from companies other than Capcom and Konami. I'm worried that the Squaresoft greats won't make the cut, since they haven't been released in NA for Wii U, and we also never saw an American release of Final Fantasy 1 on Wii U or 3DS. It makes no sense to me since Square Enix has supported the Vita, a system that has sold abysmally!
@Zach777
Proof that spandex wearers have been right all along. Oh what a world!
Lol
Oh wow, how my dreams of playing as a naked ninja in a video have been fulfilled (as least judging by that banner image)!
nothing for me this week, which is good, 'cause I got 2 games just recently.
@Captain_Gonru ". And it's all touch screen controls,"
Thanks, that's all I needed to know, hated Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. Guess if it's all touchscreen controls though it will be an easy port to the NX tablet. OK, by now I am so close to being this guy.
@TruenoGT Oh nice, I hope most if not all will transfer. Fingers crossed they will reveal VC info for NX during the system reveal.
No!!! The Sonic games were taken off sale! July 30 is my birthday, and I was gonna get 3DS Lost World to accompany my beaten Wii U version!
Here in Canada, land of expensive, nothing for mii besides the new MCU map pack which should be fun.
Hey! Didn't expect to see a Kirby demo. Excited that they added this, haven't picked up the game but was considering. This will be my deciding choice!
Another very pathetic week for nintendo yet again
Terrible week. No money for you yet again, Nintendo.
I've been really critical of the hidden object genre in the past, despite never having played one... But Dracula's Legacy honestly looks like it has enough "proper" adventure game elements that I can at least give it a proper go and see if I can enjoy them at all.
Japan got Animal Crossing: Wild World yesterday. Of course we do not get it. Come on Reggie - make it happen!!!
Those Shin Megami Tensei games are always getting discounted.
I may look at Devil Survivor 2, depending on price. I have it and the first physical, but wound up buying the first on sale. It's a "first world problem," but that cart slot is competitive! It's the same reason I've been playing Chrono Trigger on my phone lately and not on my 3DS (it would mean having to cycle Ocarina in and out, any my son has been playing that).
Steel Lords is already half off? For $7.50?
Hysterical laughter can be heard off-screen
....I wouldn't even pay anything for that. I'd only play it if it was free, and then only to laugh at how bad it is.
Nothing for me this week.
12.99 for Protect me Knight!!! Awwww. A little more than I was prepared for, but Protect me Knight 1 was a lot of fun, so I'm definitely getting the 2nd eventually.
(^_^ )
@mowerdude NEw 3DS XL, then the NX when it comes out. Unless 3DS games are playable on the NX.
Mmmmm, Epic Yarn.
Is that all the VC the 3ds is going to get anymore! SNES?! Where's the Gameboy, NES and turbo grafx 16 games? The Japanese 3ds VC has nearly 300 games! Cmon Nintendo!
Gotta Protectors is an Instant buy for me… if it comes out in the UK.
I loved it on the Xbox live indie games.
Gotta Protectors looks like a lot of fun! I'll be getting it soon.
I'm probably going to grab Sadame finally and Ninja Battle Heroes. Both games have gotten strong recommendations from other regular NintendoLifers here.
I want to see a review on Gotta Protectors first, but definitely interested in it!
kirby demo for me!
Demo! Also, Devil Survivor 2 better be cheap this time. I've been waiting too long...
EDIT:
DS2:RB's still not >$20, so just the free demo for me...again...
Why are the shovelware games always on sale?
