Here's a fun fact for a Friday morning. Mario is apparently in his mid 20s, more precisely just "24 or 25" years old according to none other than Shigeru Miyamoto in a newly unearthed Japanese interview from 2005.
According to the interview, although Mario has evolved in lots of ways over the years since his inception, his age was set in stone from day one. In the words of Miyamoto-san:
I think it was fortuitous that we didn't put any restrictions on Mario as a character. Normally when you create a character and present him to the world, all the details get filed in: what's his favourite colour? what kind of food does he like to eat?
Aside from the fact that he's about 24-25 years old, we didn't define anything else.
Determining Mario's age was important so he could be used in later games and avoid the need to add a backstory at a later date:
When we make a game we take care not to add incongruence to that game's world. With that caveat, I'd like to keep using Mario in future games.
So there you have it, having facial hair might well make Mario look a bit older than his years, but it turns out he is a bit of a spring chicken - now and forever in the eyes of Mr Miyamoto.

It's not just the facial hair that made me assume he's middle aged, it's his voice too. So he must have had a hard upbringing.
Miyamoto has called him a "weird old guy" and "ossan"(middle-aged man) in interviews at various points though, so he's clearly a bit flexible here:)
I heard his canonical age was 26, as is Princess Peach.
Maybe he's a hipster, and the blue collar work attire, facial hair and upbeat attitude are actually ironic.
Forever young!
@MarioFanatic64 His trophy description in the Japanese version of Melee states that Mario is 26.
Facial hair does tend to add a few years, Mario would have quite the baby face if he were to shave his moustache
It's not that far from what I assumed. I thought he was around 30 or so.
What does facial hair tell about age? I'm 20 and I'd say that I have mightier beard than Mario's moustache.
I honestly used to think he was around his 40s. :/
Still, that seems like a logical age for him to be.
If he is in his mid 20s, then he should be considered dangerously overweight for his age. Diabetes is a real danger for him.
That's Japanese age. In Western terms, you have to add 10 years to that.
Man, I feel sorry for you guys at the Nintendolife office. Nintendo news is soooo few and far between right now that you'll write an article about Mario's age... NX news can't come soon enough.
Without his mustache, he looks much younger, just a little bit older than Fix-it Felix, so yeah, mid to late 20s sounds accurate to me.
Well that makes him about 60 year old now, right?
@BionicDodo thanks
I have a full beard but doesnt help me all the time...some days ago i was asked to show id when buying tobacco....and im 41.
Then he's not aged well.
I always thought of Mario as in his late 40s, mainly because of the Mario cartoon with Captain Lou Albano who was around 56 and the Super Mario Bros movie where Bob Hoskins was 51.
Back when Mario 64 first came out it took a lot of getting used to his new voice. That said, I can't imagine any other voice for him now!
LOL
I think it's possible. I myself can't grow a decent moustache, let alone a beard, and I'm 34.
I always imagined him in his 30's/40's, for the same reasons BulkSlash listed
If Mario's age around 20's, wonder about Luigi's age...
He's still a cartoon character so the age doesn't change much.
It's a tiny miracle that Mario's design does not come across more weird or creepy. A blue collar mustached adult man drawn as a cute cartoon character is not exactly the first idea that comes to your mind if you were creating a kid-friendly mascot today. Cool how they rolled with the design originating from the technical limitations of the NES and can make it work even today.
I guess that explains his energy...I would get tired quickly from jumping and running around as much as he does.
This was shown in some picture series sometime depicting why people don't recognize Superman. Even Mario can disguise quite easily by ditching hat and moustache.

Say what you want Shigs, but I won't believe for a second that Mario's favourite food isn't mushroom pizza.
I'd a light tash when I was 16.
I Believe it. I had my mightiest mustache back when I was 25.
I'd say if Miyamoto had a chance to design Mario all over again he'd do certain things differently.
@BionicDodo This changed me.
that beer belly says otherwise....
Always thought he was middle age cause of his little tubby belly.
@BulkSlash That was his licensed voice, not his real one...
But joking aside, I never thought of Mario's voice as not belonging to Charles Martinet, even though he was only first introduced on the N64. Before that, video game characters just didn't have voices, only the odd sound bite here or there.
I'd say the guy is in his thirties, if not forties, at least!
A well aged thirtysomething, but a thirtysomething nonetheless.
@Xaessya
HOLY SMOKES, really?
That makes sense when you think about it. Most superheroes are kept in the 25-33 age sweet spot because if you market it to adolescents then that is old enough to be adult but any older would be considered ancient to a 10-15 year old. Most forms of media with enduring characters stick them in this range. It is media/Hollywood attractive.
I figured he was just an ageless being.
I don't argue his official age. Always was a raring to go sort. I still like that one timeline theory that proposed the original DK (aka Cranky Kong) was in conflict Mario's father.
HOWEVER:
"When we make a game we take care not to add incongruence to that game's world."
What. The. Hell. See previous statement about one DK being two generations removed from another. I refuse to believe Nintendo ever had a thought in their head about timeline logistics prior to the internet age, when it came out that video game geeks gave quite a few craps about it (more than strictly necessary). Instead of standing their ground and just saying, "No there is no grand connected universe deal, we just felt like putting them in games," they buckled under pressure and said things that only made the situation more confusing.
When I was young. He was older than me.
Now I'm old. He's younger than me.
26 all right.
It definitely seems accurate when you take his moustache off, but I've always had a funny headcanon that video game characters age with their games. As such, Mario would be about 31/35 and Sonic would be 25.
However I also like to think of Mario and Luigi as the same age as their Super Mario Bros Super Show counterparts... Just very spry middle aged pasta lovers.
Jump Man! Wahoo~
@Simbabbad Now he looks closer to Fix-It Felix.
Mario will never die, it could be 100 years from now and he will still be in his 20s.
The Tache makes him look older but without he definitely looks mid-twenties.
@HappyMaskedGuy
And yet, have you seen him jump? Guy defies all laws of physics!
Wasn't this confirmed in Super Mario All-Stars instruction manual?
@Anti-Matter I think the latest lore dictated that the Mario Bros. are twins (would make sense if Yoshi Island was any indication). So if Mario is 24-25, then so is Luigi.
But given Miyamoto's devil-may-care attitude to character answers, I wouldnt be surprised if he suddenly started saying Luigi was somehow 7 years younger than Mario.
wow. this weirds me out. I remember watching the Super Mario Movie at my aunt's when I was little, and then watching some of the Super Mario Power Hour cartoons online.
I always assumed Mario was about 30, Peach was maybe late 20's and Luigi mid-20's. I think I like that better.
How old is Luigi then?
Holy jeebus, I'm older than Mario.
How olds toad and what is toad
Well, that's what I always assumed. Somewhere between 25-35. Cool to hear I was always in the ballpark with this.
The most in shape out of shape mid 20 year old ever
@BionicDodo yea, when you get rid of the moustache, he does look very young! So Miyamoto saying 24-25 is a pretty good age for Mario.
Miyamoto is insane.
Really? I thought Mario was at least 35! Donkey Kong came out in 1981, after all.
Makes sense. His jumps are the highest they'll probably ever be. After Jordan came back to basketball after trying baseball, he was in his 30s and depended more on his jumpshot . His hang time was half of what it was during the Bulls first threepeat (when he was a Spry 20 something). Just sayin'
@chiefeagle02 I thought exactly the same thing, without his moustache he IS Fix-It Felix.
I've always felt Mario's age is irelevant.
It's like if you watch a Bugs Bunny cartoon, it never really crosses your mind, well how old is he.
The same goes for Mario, and most Nintendo games.
If age isn't in a games narrative, it's irrelevant.
Which is weird given he celebrated his 30th birthday recently
I jest, of course.
I was born a few years after Mario made his 1st appearance in the original Donkey Kong. He's still in his 20's and I just turned 30. Must be nice not to age. Lol
@ottospooky
Good lord, that would ruin the character.
Considering he was designed in 1981, I'd believe it
@Anti-Matter Mario and Luigi are twins!
HOLD UP I ALWAYS THOUGHT MARIO IS 30-40ish YEARS OLD
WHAT
@Tyranexx Well, if you like Game Theory's Mario Timeline, that's not really a problem.
Hahaha! Good joke Mr. Miyamoto. He's obviously at least 35, maybe something like 38.
His favorite dishes are probably spaghetti and ravioli, according to Super Mario 64.
Well there goes my theory that Mario has been able to fight both Cranky Kong (the original DK) and the current Donkey Kong due to the different lifespans present between humans and apes.
I always thought the man was in his late 30's. Like someone above said the Super Mario Bros Super Show probably embedded that idea in my head in my youth.
Well, after a certain age, everyone younger than you looks the same age.
I guess I always assumed he was 30-something, but I guess I should have known better considering those endearing locks. https://goo.gl/images/2gbIcG
Bob Hoskins was not 25 when he played Mario.
a few tats and a beard and he'd fit in with being mid 20's... wait i'm older than mario
For me he's in his late 30s.
@YoshiTails That abomination of a movie doesn't have any sort of relevance to the world of Super Mario. It's a disgrace not just to Nintendo, but to mankind at large.
I'd have guessed late 20's for Mario, and mid-20's for Luigi, so it's not that far off.
I thought 30-35 myself. Not too young to be inexperienced, not too old he can't jump around, but just old enough that he's been through some things. Guess that's why he seems so chipper still lol. So Luigi is hold old then? A year younger?
@MeloMan Mario and Luigi are fraternal twins, so they are likely the same age.
