Famitsu has revealed that the popular RPG Maker series is finally coming to the Nintendo 3DS.
RPG Maker Festival is apparently 85 percent complete and should see release later this year in Japan. The series can chart its history all the way back to the late '80s, and has appeared on a wide range of systems over the decades, including the Super Famicom, Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Game Boy Color and Nintendo DS.
While it's not aimed at professional game developers, a number of RPGs have been created and published using this software, the most famous of which is perhaps Corpse Party, which has since made its way to the PSP, PS Vita and 3DS.
Famitsu intends to reveal more about the game in its next issue, but we do know that the game will showcase some kind of online connectivity allowing players to share their creations with one another. A western launch is perhaps unlikely, given that the franchise hasn't really established itself outside of Japan.

Sounds great! I do hope we'll be able to make sprites that don't look like crappy 16-bit imitations...
Oh god please localize this please. What company makes these?
I need to know so I can blow their Facebook up with enthusiastic localization requests.
My wanted localization list is too big.
Dragon quest XI
Yokai Watch 3(as long as 2 doesn't bomb we will get this though)
Etrian Odyssey V(it's a forgone conclusion that we will get it in NA...but official confirmation is always soothing)
Puzzles and Dragons X
Picross 3D
Detective Pikachu
Monster Hunter Stories
Etc.
:/
@TheDavyStar I'm hoping for a non-chibi sprite art style, that art style in RPG Maker MV and VX Ace is ugly as heck.
It would be more fitting on Wii U, but this sure sounds interesting. I never used RPG Maker on other platforms, so I may get this.
@Pikachupwnage Enterbrain makes them, but Degica Games localises the ones on PC. You can find the latter on Twitter and Steam.
I had a lot of fun with the (partly translated) SNES version, wonder if this will ever make it to the west...
Could work, imagine sharing RPG creations via Streetpass?
The 3DS releases though will probably slow down a bit the further we get to March's NX launch. Not to say they'll cut support as soon as NX is released, but certainly a little less releases as time goes on....
Heh, now would be a good time for a localization. RPG's are abound on the 3DS. The 3DS is popular.
I would like for this game to come overseas (at least as an eShop exclusive release), but I ain't holding my breath.
And personally, I never really had a problem with the chibi art styles that VX, VX Ace, and MV had. Sure, I like the taller sprites, but I like the chibi art styles the same as well.
@Angelic_Lapras_King
Yeah but we have some 2017 release confirmed or quasi confirmed.
Yokai Watch 3
Snack World
Lady Layton
Ever Oasis
Etrian Odyssey V
For example.
When having an extensive RPG library - most of them high quality efforts - is not enough!!
Hope it comes west, because we already have some PC RPG Maker releases and those pixels may feel more charming running on the 3DS, so why not release it here?
Again, this is the kind of thing in principle (creation software and tools) that I think should have been officially built into the likes of 3DS and Wii U day one—it just makes so much sense with the touchscreen and stylus input—and I really think it would be something awesome if it were actually built into NX. I've been saying this exact thing for a while now:
http://www.inceptional.com/2015/06/26/heres-the-gist-of-my-idea-for-nintendos-nx/
It's this kind of creation suite that really would be a killer App (and service) for any new videogame system imo. It could literally be paradigm shifting in the industry as far as I'm concerned, much like the App Store has been on Apple's devices, or basically how the Internet works in general.
I'm not into RPG's much but this is exciting news!
I already love the RPG Makers on the PC and I would love to have one on the 3DS as well, they're just so fun to mess around with even if nothing really ever comes out of it.
Definelty getting it if it gets localised, but I'm not holding my breath.
Nice! I love these games!
Well, I love their earlier versions. The newer ones seem to either be too complex (if I have to learn a programming language just to use it, it probably defeats the purpose) or too limited (I don't necessarily WANT to rewrite Lord of the Rings).
But if this one came to NA, I'd probably check it out!
If you could upload your creations for others to download and enjoy then it would be a Day 1 buy for me.
I want this!!! Along with Detective Pikachu, Picross 3D 2, Monster Hunter Stories, etc...
This one obviously won't be as strong or has as many resources as the RPG Maker MV but it would be interesting to see if you can streetpass your games with other people.
@World You don't necessarily need to have coding experience for MV, it's just that scripting events can only go so far without knowledge of Ruby, the language used by it.
Oh, no thanks.
After i realized this also used for that 'Mature' title games above.
I want this to get a western release so bad.
This is definitely something I'd be interested in, especially on the next handheld.
@nessisonett Yeah, that was the big limiting factor for me in the end. I would love to be able to code and not script, but time is not infinite unfortunately.
(Semi-relatedly, I felt like RPG Maker for the PS1 struck a good balance of flexibility in its scripted events, as far as catering to non-programmers who are basically looking to be a video game DM).
@Peace-Boy
well, with the limitations of RPG Maker (considering it only makes sprite games), they're always going to be a kind of "chibi." However, the default, "ugly" look is only common because most people making RPG Maker games don't have the time or commitment to make custom graphics.
It's not hard to change the look, just time consuming. Although, I'm going to guess that the 3DS version won't allow us to import our own custom sprites and tiles. (T_T )
And it probably won't come to the west. ASCII/Enterbrain has been making portable versions since the GBC and not a single one has been localized.
Please come to the west, please!
Hrm. Looks like it's going to be an 'up front' battle style...that's nice and looks great for some things, but I rather prefer a 'side-view' style myself - I like my characters to actually be active rather than invisible.
If localized, I'd buy it!
If released in physical format, I'd buy two!
@Utena-mobile RPG Maker XP and 2003 didn't have an ugly chibi look. I want something similar to that style back. :/
I mean seriously, who wants all their characters looking like children who are 1 square high? No wonder these games aren't popular.
And when comparing the character sprites size to the size of other objects like trees, those things are absolutely tiny! That's stupid.
The article's headline alone made me think we would get RPG Maker itself on our 3DSes for a split second. Please tell me I wasn't alone!
This is awesome. I'd really enjoy creating RPGs on the go. I'm always looking for things to create when I'm stuck somewhere with only my carry-on.
For those who weren't aware, there was actually an RPG Maker game released in Japan on the Game Boy Color way back when. Some fans even made a patch for it that translated it ALMOST entirely. I remember spending many an afternoon fooling around in VBA trying to make my own title. It was surprisingly well made, even if it was extremely limited on the graphics end. I could still use it to tell my story as I wanted to tell it. If this is anything like that, it'll be amazing.
I will buy this =)
@Pikachupwnage I wouldn't even worry about Monster Hunter Stories. The series is so successful in the west that it would be incredibly stupid for them NOT to localize it.
I messed around with RPG Maker 3 on PS3, and while it was fun coming up with 3D worlds and maps for once, the battle system was sooo slow. I was used to the much faster PC releases, even though they're all in 2D. I also got the PSX one, but haven't done much map-making in it. Kind of hard to tell what's walkable and what isn't.
@Kirk I know this isn't at all what you're hoping for, but Adventure Party that just released on Wii U has the smallest idea of setting up and playing a RPG campaign with other people, with a little wiggle room for making it your own. If more competent devs got a hold of that idea, it could change RPG Maker history and make the console games stick out from their PC cousins. The console games are always much much more limited due to space and what-not, but now since consoles can go online and use removable storage space, and the Wii U allowing robust drawing options with its gamepad, this could be huge.
@argh4430 Interesting.
Hm, looks like it's going back to the front-view battle system... I sure hope it has the side-view option like MV does.
I hope this gets released over here. I've had the RPG Maker on PS1 for a long time now and it's super fun.
Omg, it's a tall order, but there has perhaps never been a game that I have wanted localized more than this one.
NO WAY!!!! RPG Maker 2000 on the PC consumed my life for multiple summers. This HAS to come out in the USA but I'm not crossing my fingers. If it doesn't I may for once, consider piracy....I do speak/read Japanese....
Make a petition with change.org
Perhaps it will work who knows?
@Peace-Boy No one will want to play your game if you are using stock assets anyway man. Might as well use the PC version and draw your own sprites.
@jbopatrick That's what my point was, I don't know why they keep using that style for the default.
Thing is, I do have the PC ones but I don't know how to do pixel art if I wanted my own sprites and stuff.
As long as it's got a nice price tag on it, day one purchase! RPG Maker on PC is too high for what little time I have spare to work on this.
sigh I knew it'd come down to this: I'm gonna make my own version of the forever-in-limbo GOLDEN SUN 4!!!
So, we can make RPGs on the 3DS?!
SIGN ME THE F*** UP!
Caution, for those of you getting hype...
All the console RPG makers have severe limitations. No importing resources, no coding, you can only share games if there's online (servers get shut down pretty quickly too) so what's given to you is all you can work with.
What's the best thing to do? Both DS RPG Maker have their resources optimized for RPG Maker VX and Ace (and MV if you upscale) and sold on the web store and steam, so this might get a resource pack as well if there's enough demand given to Degica, who are the people in control of the western marketing.
For those who were looking forward to a handheld RPG Maker, this likely won't get localized, but even if it does enter at your own risk.
It won't come west. Don Miguel will have to translate it for us. RM2k forever, y'all!
@Emile Operations Brave and Bluebird show that fan demand does work. It has to be extremely well organised as well as being relentless.
Sounds dope. Played the PlayStation one version back in the day
If that doesn't arrive here I'll be forced to buy a japanese 3DS only because of it. And then, learn some Japanese
