Figures are in for the Japanese gaming charts, covering the 10th - 16th of September, and Nintendo's major new release of the week - the Nintendo Labo Vehicle Kit - managed to snag a debut spot at number five. Sales figures show that it failed to reach the lofty heights of the previous Labo designs, however.
Unsurprisingly, Spider-Man is top of the list again this time around, shifting another 80,000 copies to keep it well out of the reach of its competitors. Nintendo titles take up 13 of the top 20 chart positions, with the only new entries being the aforementioned Vehicle Kit and Undertale - which managed to sell just under 6,000 copies at retail.
For the sake of comparison, the new Nintendo Labo release sold 11,659 copies during its opening week in Japan; back in April, the Robot Kit sold 28,629 copies during its opening week, and the Variety Kit shifted a very impressive 90,410 units.
Here's a look at the top 20 (first numbers are this week's sales, followed by total sales in brackets):

Makes sense really as you cant lug about all that cardboard on the go. In a portable dominated region I can see it not doing so well or be a sleeper hit down the line.
Personally thought this kit looked cool, but from what Nintendo Minute showed it looked really bare bones on things to do. Looks like something you'd mess around in for 10 minutes then the whole cardboard set just takes up space unused.
Well, not for lack of advertising. I’ve run into the trailer quite a few times now. Although... maybe that says more about the kind of TV I watch than anything.
I’m still very fond of Labo; it’s Nintendo exercising its barmy side in an age where the main console it’s selling is actually ‘cool’. There’s no Wii Shop channel music, or Miiverse, or Streetpass Quest, or Face Invaders, or 3D AR card gubbins packaged with the Switch, and I’m sure that’s something a lot of people are grateful for. But it’s hard to deny that Nintendo pulled off all of the above with a uniquely dorky charm.
The Switch simply launched with great games, a minimalist interface, and a winning concept behind it, and the system has done very well out of it. But Labo’s existence makes me happy they haven’t completely shut down the dumb-ass Willy Wonka division of Nintendo HQ. Because Nintendo wouldn’t be Nintendo without it.
@NewAdvent I feel a lot of people saw Tomb raider as a poor man's Uncharted and the reboot series never gained the sales it deserved.
What's the next Switch game to hit Japan in physical form? Is it Super Mario Party? That I hope will give the system a boost in sales, both game wise and hardware wise.
While I don't regret buying the Variety kit because it was an interesting discovery and I liked the building part, now it just gathers dust and I don't know what to do with it.
So I understand why it wouldn't have much success
Doesn't matter for me.
I will buy LABO Toy Con 03 on January 2019.
@FragRed I think the big next release is Dragon Ball Fighterz. Xenoverse 2 sold very well there in Japan so I reckon that Fighterz will boast the sale at the end of September.
And, obviously, we have Mario Party at the beginning of October so that will also help it.
@Maxz I mean, I don't agree with you on those things being charming or useful/nice at all, but other than that... Yeah. Switch is so cool that they really needed something so that people could once more say "Oh wait, yeah, we forgot, this is actually NINTENDO!" Labo seems to fill that niche just fine. Weird and mostly novelty, but still for some reason advertised heavily as if they were planning for it to be crazy popular.
I wonder how much more cardboard from those unsold WiiU boxes Nintendo have left to sell us as "Labo"...
@tourjeff I forgot about Drgon Ball Fightrz. For some reason I thought it had released but I may have been thinking of the online beta they had. Yeah, as you said that should sell well in Japan.
Forgot it was out tbh.
@Blizzia To be honest Nintendo is probably a little annoyed they can't make it work, it's probably really popular among their internal R&D department, so they're trying different ways to flog it.
I see one or two more attempts before they decide to drop it.
I mean the fact that Nintendo didn't even shift through 50% of the initial stock for the Labo, and it still sold 1.5m by the end, tells us that Nintendo really expected it to be huge, the fact it wasn't and still isn't probably has them scratching their heads.
Now 1.5m Labo units isn't really a failure but considering thats a fraction of what Nintendo expected to sell, kinda indicates it is as far as their expectations are considered.
This is the first of the Labo kits that has really caught my eye, the game seems the most fully featured as well. Problem is it's not good enough to devote space in a London flat too. Being such bulky items they need to overcome space as well as cost considerations.
Labo is the most embarrassing Nintendo release since Wii Music.
What did you expect?! It is overpriced cardboard with some "mobile" software attached to it. Price it for 20$ an people will buy it more.
@SmaggTheSmug
(Looked at Spiderman)
HAIYAA...!!
I summon Sailor Saturn for you !
"I am an emissary from the abyss of death. Protected by Saturn, the Planet of Ruin. I am the Guardian of Silence, Sailor Saturn. I will use Death Ribbon Revolution & Silence Glaive to Annihilate PS4 existences."
I was keen to get this one for the kids... But with our large backlog, Mario party, Pokemon ... It's too much for now. Maybe in the Xmas holidays. The first labo is also now in pieces...
@Anti-Matter Why do you have to be so jealous of the other console exclusives success? People seems to love the game and there is nothing wrong with that.
@Razer I never understood why they thought Labo was gonna be great. I mean... It's clunky cardboard. The Switch is meant to be small and portable and easy to lug around with you. Oh well.
@Anti-Matter Sorry, Sailor Saturn, but your console went out of production in 2000
Xbox One is doing especially bad this generation in Japan, even more so than the Xbox360. Lack of good exclusive games is killing them.
Looks to me that nothing sold incredibly well... besides maybe Spider-Man.
Meanwhile, Xbox's marketing team be like 'SALES UP 500%'
Everybody who bought the Labo variety pack in Japan was probably looking at it sitting their collecting dust and thinking "that was fun and all, but I have no place to keep it, I really don't have room for another." The few people who bought the robot were probably thinking "fool me once, shame on you...".
I like Labo, I'm OK with the price, but this set is too similar to the last set and way to big. They probably should have put out a few smaller kits first like the gun or camera for $20 each and save this for next year.
In some ways, Nintendo can look on Labo as a loss leader. It's the barmy idea that maintains the company's reputation for focusing on fun, families and innovation over pure technical performance. It's great for the brand, basically, even if it doesn't sell a truckload. I'm sure it'll continue to sell through the Switch's lifetime, though, especially in the holiday season, when parents want to get their kids something that forces them to look beyond the screen.
At least LABO is easy to recycle.
I can't help but wonder if the Japanese are crying about online as well.
I guess the continued high sales for Splatoon 2 will mean more online service subscriptions in Japan.
Given the complaints here, I’ll be intrigued to see if Nintendo realise paid online needs improving, or they can just sell it regardless.
Yeah, Labo just got beat by 2 Western games by a mile. Time to let the cardboard go.
Shame. This one actually looks interesting as an "extra" for racing game in general. Just sell the kit for $15/20 and let people play whatever game they want with it.
Glad to see TR doing well in Japan - it is on my backlist. And Undertale was a "must play rpg" to just about nobody at launch.... shocking 🙄
Nintendo is applying a toy-like product release schedule for Labo when they should be thinking bigger. Anyway, great to see Spider-Man doing so well.
I am getting 2 if the Labo kits for the kids at xmas this year. Could be that I am not the only thinking that...
@Nincompoop
Trash talking again ?
Why don't you buy and prove yourself if LABO is NOT a trash to be Recycled.
@Razer Are you pessimistic about everything on this site? Here's a nice site you'll like - it has lots of other people who trash talk Nintendo!

Everyone I know bought Switch as a portable. Japan in particular is all about portables over home consoles. But Labo is huge and cannot be really used in any convenient portable method. Its cool...but Nintendo should have expected it to be very niche. I'll never buy it, but its cool that it exists
The game looks fun but I don't want to store those huge pieces of cardboard.
Nintendo, make your next innovation a balloon that I can deflate when I'm not using it.
I’m enjoying the Vehicle Kit. When I’m not playing them, I put it and the toycons from the variety kit on the top shelf in my closet. Out of the way, and not imposing at all.
Hey remember last time you guys said "LABO SALES ARE DISAPPOINTING" and "LABO IS BOMBING"
Nintendo reported over 1.6Million units sold and they were very happy with sales? Remember that? wasn't even like 2 months ago
Maybe stop, just a suggestion.
Labo is unique, quirky family fun and I predict it will have longer legs than most flash in the pan games. This may be the last kit though. I’ll be a little sad if that’s the case as I’ve really enjoyed building and playing with my daughter.
