Nintendo has shared a list of the 30 best-selling games on the Switch's eShop for September in the US, giving us a quick look into which titles customers are loving in the digital market. There's a nice blend of indie greats, full retail gems, and everything in between appearing on the list - so let's explore.
Firstly, taking the crown as the most downloaded game is Fortnite. Of course, this hardly comes as a surprise when you consider its free status and popularity, especially considering the launch of the game's sixth season towards the end of the month. Elsewhere, arguably the Switch's biggest and best single-player experiences Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are still clinging on at the bottom, and even Super Mario Party - which actually launched in October - made its way in thanks to what we presume must have been an awful lot of pre-orders.
Here's the full list for your perusal:
1. Fortnite
2. Undertale
3. Hollow Knight
4. Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition
5. Super Mario Party
6. Overcooked 2
7. Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD
8. Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle
9. Human: Fall Flat
10. Rocket League
11. Stardew Valley
12. Dead Cells
13. Into The Breach
14. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
15. Hyper Light Drifter: Special Edition
16. The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+
17. The Way Remastered
18. The Messenger
19. NBA 2K19
20. Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate
21. Surgeon Simulator CPR
22. Cities: Skylines - Nintendo Switch Edition
23. Arcade Archives VS. Super Mario Bros.
24. Hollow
25. Okami HD
26. Dragon Ball FighterZ
27. ACA NeoGeo Metal Slug
28. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
29. Super Mario Odyssey
30. Mario Tennis Aces
Are there any surprises on that list? Any titles you'd have thought would be there that are missing? Let us know with a comment below.

Okami should be #1. It needs more love.
Fortnite #1, of course. Is that because of in-game purchases.
Anyone here get FF15 pocket edition?
Sad to see Velocity 2X miss the cut. It's so good, and it was on sale its first week.
@Kalmaro I got it and am just not impressed. Thankfully FFX is out next year.
So, it's a list of the 30 best-selling games and the only game on this list, which is free to download and doesn't actually get sold, is #1?
i like how there more 3rd parties and indies than there are 1st parties games on the top list.
@theinstruct0r I was just about to comment that, it's technically impossible for Fortnite to be a best-seller since it's free to play.
Also I wish that Hyper Light Drifter was higher on the list. That game is an utter masterpiece of game design and ambient storytelling. It impacted me in a way that I've never really experienced before in a videogame.
@theinstruct0r I am REALLY looking forward to FFX on Switch.
But my Number One is still Portal Knights.
Oh, wait...
Dragon Quest Builders 2 will be my choice later
Human: Fall Flat being #9 above the likes of Stardew Valley, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is most surprising to me.
It's a good game, but it's a small indie title that's been out for quite some time now. I got it physical and don't regret it.
Agreed Fortnite doesn't belong on the list as it's a free game, even if you could buy in it, it's totally choice. I wonder what was #31 or really #30 on then that slipped the list.
It is nice to see a FF game doing pretty well up on there on the list. I grabbed it, but I will admit life has been bad the last couple weeks with little time to game so I have not touched it which sucks. I wasn't sure if I could at the time, but knowing how tight arsed cheap S-E can be with discounts, I took advantage of the big cut.
Not a bad list; there's plenty of variety. In my opinion, anyone who claims that the Switch has "no games" is either insanely picky or is just lying to themselves.
@ilikeike you took the words right out of my mouth re: hyper light drifter. I hope more people give it a try. It just screams a link to the past with different colors and characters. Gameplay is awesome. My only gripe is the map and no item key. It took me a bit of getting used to but once i did, I couldn't put the game down. Not sure if underrated is the best word to describe it, but it needs more attention on switch.
"best-selling games"
*Sees Fortnite, a free game at the top.
Huh?
Cities and FFXV are the only games on that list I've bought in Sept. The other newer releases are too expensive compared to other platforms where they've been free or heavily discounted (like Undertale) or simply are in genres I don't care for (2D platformer roguelikes and so on)
Undertale! 😃
I see Splatoon is not there. Interesting.
@NewAdvent
#4
^ What he said ^
So I'm happy to see Undertale and Hollow Knight being the top two~
Surprised that Paladins doesn't appear on this list. I prefer Paladins to Fortnite by far.
Where’s the nes
@Kalmaro Fortnite must have an awful lot of people buying in-game stuff, otherwise f2p games like Paladins and Arena of Valor would also appear on this list.
@SKTTR I know my baby brother likes buying something in that game. No idea what he's getting though.
I get the complaints about Free to Play, but how else are you going to track popularity of free to play titles? Just pretend the article is titled "Most Downloaded Titles" (Like the article body indicates) and the list is accurate. It's not a list of top grossing games by revenue.
The Messenger is the bomb. Love that game to death. I often listen to the soundtrack at work.
@Aozz101x Well there are like 60 or 70 indie/3rd party games for every 1st party Nintendo game so that’s not all that crazy.
Just goes to show how much Fortnite is making off of microtransactions alone, and how they could potentially make way more money off of an individual selling them bits and pieces of a game rather than a complete package. That being said, I can't be mad at Fortnite because it is free to play, it isn't pay to win, and there's no loot boxes (gambling). A lot of these $60 games coming out from Ubisoft/EA/Activision should either be free to play, or much cheaper.
@C-Threep But it isn't how history of sales have generally gone on Nintendo consoles, or at least how it has been perceived for the last few consoles. Nintendo has had the stigma of a huge gap between 1st party and third party sales. Edit: C-Threep seems to have changed the post I was replying to? So, this doesn't make much sense in context anymore.
@aaronsullivan it's total 'eShop' sales for September 2018 ... not lifetime sales from March 2017 to September 2018. Plus, almost all 1st party games are physical, where most sales come from.
@Giygas_95 Agreed! Love The Messenger, I was just thinking this morning that I needed to dive back into the game nearly completed it and then got distracted. GREAT soundtrack!
@Ignatius Probably the best Indie I've played this year. I do wish there were more upgrades to buy because about a little more than halfway through I had them all and had nothing to spend my increasing amount of money on. I also sorta wish you could replay levels pre time portals because the 16 bit version of Cloud Ruins gets pretty much replaced by the 8 bit version, and the 16 bit version was one of my favorite stages and songs.
The movement fluidity and soundtrack make it a really great game though.
Monster hunter all the way!
OK surprised that Nintendo of America show Fortnite. I don't know about other regions, but in Europe Fortnite does not appear on the chart, never has, though I have no doubt at all that it's the most downloaded title from the eShop week in week out.
@RupeeClock
It had a sale when the more modes were added.
Hollow Knight is selling incredibly well - and it deserves it. Undertale just came out, but Hollow Knight has been out for months ... And it's basically #2. Clocked over 100hrs and I have to force myself to not play more. 2 bosses I can't beat, 106% otherwise...
Surprised to see Skylines on there, considering its performance in the direct trailer.. Oof.
Indie Budget games galore 🙄
Alwa’s Awakening "outperforming" Steam did not mean much in the US.
Fortnite cannot lead the way as it is not sold it is free
I can’t believe Undertale is #2! Is it
That good???
messenger should be in the top 10
How is Monster Hunter that low? It's one of the very best games on the system.
Nice list. First party, traditional third party, high quality indies and lots of variety in the types of game listed.
Top 30 best selling list: #1 a f2p game. Okay.......
Other than that it's nice to see that Hollow Knight is still going strong.
@joey302 Yeah it is. I played it on pc and the best way to experience it is to go for it blindly until the end. But don't expect decent graphics. This game is all about story and gameplay. Check out the trailer.
@aromain150 yea the graphics was the first thing I noticed as barely 8-bit quality but I’m a true believer that graphics are secondary anyway. I did buy a retail copy of Undertale at Best Buy but didn’t crack it open yet. I just didn’t expect it to be #1 or 2 on the eshop charts lol
Fortnite is making some good money on Switch!
@Bunkerneath
Doesn’t matter. Ryan is under contractual obligation to include the word “Fortnite” in at least 2-3 headlines per week. He’ll make it fit.
@hcfwesker Yeah, originally C-Threep said something a little different, then clarified. Not sure why it matters about the dates. I was only commenting on the stigma that makes this notable, not that some big sea change has happened.
@SKTTR It's confusing. Earlier, similar lists, seemed to be by downloads (like one in January) in the articles and "best-selling" in the titles. There needs to be some more clarification on this, because it's pretty bleak for other free-to-plays if they aren't on here.
Still, I'm not sure it squares by money being made, either. Though, Fornite is probably on the top of both lists (downloads and income) anyway. People do buy those cosmetics and it doesn't take much per person when you have the big number of players.
Wonder how armello is performing. Been in the top 30 in the eshop charts the last month
Stardew Valley is STILL #11. Without adding DLC yet, when faced against all the other heavy hitters on Switch.... Never mind the other games on the list, this is one impressive feat!
