Re: Feature: Best Nintendo Switch 'Walking Simulators' And Narrative Games

I really don't get the hatred for Gone Home. I thought it was pretty good, despite the contrivances of handily placed items - which is kind of unavoidable with this type of game when there are no other characters but a definite narrative (unlike Dear Esther, for example).
Curious to hearehere the dislike comes from.

@RebeccaEdv I decided to give it a try. It's a horrifically simplified version of that game. The speech has that muffled effect 8 bit games had, and the graphics are very C64-ish.

Best of all, the game stutters when you get into combat, it's slow at the best of times and the on-screen button prompts are wrong. Great game!

Re: Action Shooter Radical Radial Joins Hamster's Arcade Archives Series

Looking at the main screenshot, my first thought was to channel my inner Barry Burton with a "what is this?"

But the point of Arcade archives seems to be to release classics AND obscure titles most people had forgotten. I'm ok with that, as much as I would love to see more '90s games. I don't think we'll be seeing any licensed games like Star Wars Trilogy or TMNT, though. Too expensive.

Plus Alpha is the only game I'm interested in this week. It's a "cute em up" like the Twinbee games, but without having separate air and ground attacks. Not a bad shooter from what little I've played so far.

This is definitely worth a look. I hadn't played it before, so didn't know what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised.

Each stage is a single screen, with the goal to kill a certain number of enemies. It controls like a twin stick shooter, but is slower than most games in that genre since your enemies take cover so you can't just rattle off shots. Add in some amusing animations for some things and level design that means you can't just weave between bullets as things are in your way, and you have a fun - and surprisingly polished - game.

@BLD the scene highlighted in the review just shows that the reviewer has never heard of a clip on tie and never played an old point and click game where you use items rather than talk about them. Having played the Vita version, I didn’t struggle with the concept at all.

So (personally) I think complaining about that scene and the use of the Entirely Optional live action visuals is an unfair reflection of the game.
