My favorite of the trilogy, although Prime 1's just a hair behind it. Just replayed 3 a couple of months ago after the 4 trailer came out, and yeah, there's a reason I've only played that one twice. It's just not much fun, not like 1 or 2.
I get why people dislike the "corrosive atmosphere" mechanic in 2, but I think that's on player for not approaching the game in the right headspace. Like, I have friends who just refuse to give Majora's Mask a fair shot because they don't like the three day timer, but it's not there to be a limitation, it's there to contribute to the atmosphere and mood of the game. If you're averagely-skilled, the corrosion will hardly ever be a factor.
Glad I still have all my retro hardware, because that is way too much money for versions that were remastered to make them uglier. (I mean, in some ways they're pretty pretty, but those clashing fonts just ruin the whole experience for me.)
Which reminds me, now that I finally have a Pocket, I should see if I can get a SNES core and the Brave New World FFVI mod running on it .
There was maybe one No Grav game I was interested in, but like others have said they mostly publish shovelware. I did notice on the eShop just now that their entire catalogue is on sale except for twelve games, and the three games listed above are part of those twelve, so it looks pretty obvious to me what the twelve free games will be.
The one game I was kinda maybe interested in is one of the sale games, so that settles it for me to not clutter my system with this dreck.
Like @AcridSkull, I only picked one up once the Wind Waker special edition dropped but I eventually picked up Batman, Darksiders, and NewSMBU. Really loved Darksiders but the screen tearing issues were distracting, so Imma have to go with Batman. Still the only one of that series I've played, but a buddy gave me Asylum on PS3 so I should probably get around to that.
I picked up the LRG physical in large part due to the glowing review from this site, but it still hasn't made it out of my backlog. Maybe after I get done with work tonight. And done with my Fall Guys dailies.
Hands down no question my favorite video game of all time, and I'm not even interested in doing the Pantheons. It's got just the perfect mix of open ended exploration, satisfying combat, and abusable tech for when you really want to play around with the game. I highly recommend Mark Brown's Boss Keys video on the game; really gets into what makes the exploration in this game so good.
"Fans were desperate for what they dubbed 'Banjo-Threeie'," "Neither of these are Banjo-Threeie in many people's eyes." We're missing some nuance here; the fans didn't come up with the name Banjo-Threeie, Rare did. A game of that name was specifically teased during the Tooie ending, just like B-K called out Banjo-Tooie by name in its ending
I remember when Tooie was announced and I was like, "What? They kept that silly name?" So when I got to the end of that game I took the name Threeie in stride. So while I won't say they promised us Banjo-Threeie—after decades of observing the games industry I think we can all agree there's no such thing as a "promise," in games, only hopeful thinking that sometimes turns in to the game we wanted—there's a reason fans want a game following the specific BK/B2ie formula named "Banjo-Threeie."
Was tempted to give it up in Twoson but I pushed though. Been making slow progress but the fourth character just joined my party . . . and I've finally gotten my hands on a PS5 just the other day, so I think that's it for Earthbound for me. Not a horrible game but it never hooked me.
And I still hate the art style. If they'd made the exact same game but it looked like Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger, I would have beaten it multiple times back in the day.
Yeah, games like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous I really wish you could toggle the differently named DLCs on and off. Maybe next HK playthrough I want to 100% the base game before I even think about Nightmare King Grimm, and I'm certainly never going to get through all the pantheons.
Yeah no, that art style doesn't do it for me. If you're going for a feudal Japanese setting, at least reference traditional Japanese art styles with your graphics. And I fail to see the comparison to SoR beyond the shared genre.
People have been complaining about the term "metroidvania" for years, and I've always been like, well it's not ideal but it's understandable, and a useful shorthand. But no. I cannot get behind "metroidbrainia." That's an abomination of jargon. "Detective game" is fine; just use that.
Speaking of, I just watched a roundtable on dectective games a couple of days ago that had, amongst other people, Mark Brown and Lucas Pope (LP being the creator of Obra Dinn). Mark made a comment about loving video games that required you to use a real-world notebook to solve, and Lucas replied that that was one of his design goals for Obra Dinn. That stroked my ego, as I beat it without one. Lovely genre, whatever you label it.
"Solve magical arquebuses"? Is this some weird British idiom that I'm unfamiliar with? I don't understand how medieval firearms fit in this sentence's context.
One google later, no, the publisher and the studio are both Italian. So maybe it's some weird Italian idiom that doesn't really translate.
@Orokosaki But temporarily's not the best word for the situation either, because the condition doesn't wear off over time, it gets removed due to certain triggers. I'm sure there's a better word for the situation than either of those options, because this is the English language we're talking about and it's chock full of words, but I'm having trouble coming up with one. Indefinitely, perhaps.
Think I might give this one up. Was never interested in this in the 90s because I thought the art style was just ugly, but people have been praising this for decades so I figured I'd give it a shot. Now I'm in Twoson and just not having fun. I know it'll pick up and I'll die less once I have a second character to tank some hits, but there're some 30 year-old design decisions that just get under my skin, and I'm usually super forgiving of those. Shut up, dad, your spiel was amusing the first time, but not the thirtieth; just let me save already. I recovered in the hotel with full health but I still gotta spend another $50 to get my PP back?
And that art style is still. Just. Fugly. All these years later.
They need to add the option to turn off the tower defense segments; that's what made me lose interest by the second region. That'll make it feel more like original 'Raiser.
@dartmonkey That's fair, I stand corrected. Although maybe don't remind me about Horace; I'm still a little miffed I got that game and mainly on this site's recommendation.
Hey Gavin, regarding Samus' "zero-st" mission, there's already an English word for that, more fun to say with 100% less awkwardness: zeroth. Even though its not in many people's vocabulary no-one's going to be confused by it.
I usually try to reign in my inner grammar police, but seeing as you're writing professionally, please take this in the intended spirit of friendly criticism, Damien, but "is comprised of" is incorrect usage. You generally either want "is composed of," or "comprises."
With that said, I do not need this product and I would not get much use out of it, but I kind of still really want it a bunch.
I don't get all the Greed mode hate; the reviewer's complaining about TBoI losing its pick-up-and-play-edness, but Greed mode is the most pick-up-and-play-ey mode in the game. A beaten run is thirty minutes, tops.
Careful, @Trajan, the local morality police will hear you. But anyhoo, if you look at this and just wonder why not DL ROMs, the product's just not for you. I like having a cart collection, and products like this allow me to do more with them. Though from the review it doesn't sound like this has any functions that I want, that I don't already get from my RetroFreak.
Well, 263 comments and I still have two questions. Is Hero Mode still locked behind beating the game? And are the different controls schemes locked to different modes, i.e., can I use non-motion controls in TV mode? Seems like everything I see about the sword swings mapped to the right stick is always in handheld.
I had a good time with this back when it came out; I only beat it once and I knew there was a lot I was missing. It always amused me that a kept my starting spear all the way to the end of the game, never found a better weapon. I must have upgraded it but I don't remember.
After finally 100%ing (1 savefile, not all three) Binding of Isaac AB+ after 700 hours and a bunch of quarantine, I've dipped back into Flinthook recently, starting to get ghost ships on that one. Yoodanji is also so much fun. I need to get into Enter the Gungeon and Dead Cells.
Heard about this on the CUPodcast, was interested enough to look up the Kickstarter. Big mistake. After the KS horror stories of the past few years I always told myself I'd never back a videogame Kickstarter, but this looks too good. Hope I didn't waste my money on the physical edition pledge . . .
Hey @SwitchVogel, I'm maybe in the minority here, but one thing I always appreciate in a review of a Japanese game is, is there an option to switch the voice-acting to Japanese w/subtitles? I know the western industry's come a long way in the past two, three decades, but as guy who was into anime in the bad old days, lack of Japanese voice options can be a deal-breaker for me.
Day 1! Love me some Picross, and thanks fellow commentators for alerting me to the existence of Sanrio Picross.
S1 was a disappointment--still haven't finished it--because the colour scheme hurt my eyes, especially in TV mode, but they always switch up the colors and this looks no different, so looking forward to it.
Wario is far and away my favorite Mario-verse character, and I still own all the Wario Lands & World, but for some reason I've never bought a WarioWare game. I think this'll be my first if only for the novelty of dusting off my 3DS.
I was huge into Lone Wolf when I was a kid (until the Grand Master series and they #$@!ed us over in the States with those broken abridged versions) but I've never been able to get into this game on Android. If this is cheap though, maybe I'll see if it'll click for me on the Switch.
Was Samus ever referred to as a bounty hunter in any of the Nintendo-made games? IIRC she was a "Space Hunter" in the manual for the original '86 release, and sure most of us back then took it to mean "(science-fictioney) bounty hunter" but I think the only job description given then was that the Space Hunters combated space piracy.
I'd gotten so used to Amazon Prime (USA) getting my pre-orders to me a day early it kind of threw my plans out of whack when I received Odyssey on release day.
