Fantastic roguelite The Binding of Isaac has been around for a decade since its original Flash incarnation. On Switch alone it’s been a thing – along with its Afterbirth+ expansion – for over four years. A big, final addition to the game with the Repentance 'expansion', then, seems a little belated. Helpfully, Isaac is the kind of game that engenders obsession.
The further that Isaac moved from its original incarnation, the less balanced, and therefore the less fun, it became. It’s still ace, of course – by some distance it remains the king of the roguelites in this writer’s opiniom — but the bloat (not to be confused with boss monster The Bloat) introduced with each successive expansion made the game steadily more complex, less breezy, not as pick-up-and-play fun. Sure, you don’t expect to win every run in a game like this, but spawn The Haunt on the first floor with absolutely no power-ups and you may as well just restart.
Not anymore, though. On top of adding 130 items, 100 enemies, 25 bosses and 20 new playable characters, Repentance extensively rebalances the game, buffing many items and nerfing others; quite frankly, this serves nothing less than to make Isaac great again. Available as DLC or as a separate physical Switch release direct from the publisher, there’s so much new and remixed content here, with many graphics extensively redrawn for consistency, new music, a new fuller-featured co-op mode (no more lame babies!) and a brand new ending with new super-bosses to fight, that it almost feels like a full sequel at times.
It cannot be stressed enough that – again, in this writer’s opinion – Repentance is almost a full-scale apology for what Afterbirth+ wrought upon the game. While the purity of the original Flash title (and initial Rebirth remake) is absolutely lost, what remains is one of the most content-rich, fullest-featured titles available on the Switch.
By no means is Repentance perfect. It’s still rather bloated, depending on which ending you’re after, and there may be some unpleasant surprises for veteran players; many of your favourite broken item combos are no longer available, or nerfed to the point of near-uselessness. Greed mode is still lingering around the game like a bad smell and unlocking much of the content requires you to beat it over and over with the new characters and “tainted” variants of the old ones.
Overall, this is a return to form for The Binding of Isaac and comes close to capturing the magic of its original pre-Wrath of the Lamb incarnation. The simplest recommendation we can give is that we can see ourselves pouring another 500 hours into a game that had, until now, resolutely burned us out. Those Greed Mode unlocks may never see the light of day, but we’ll be having a blast discovering the thousands of new item synergies, defeating the brilliant new bosses and exploring that alternate route through the game to fight against… well, that would be telling.
Repentance by name, and wonderful, welcome repentance by nature, this expansion is an apology for what became of Isaac and a promise to do better — a promise that it very much delivers on.

So far, it feels like a massive improvement over Afterbirth+, which I felt was a step back from Rebirth. I don’t mind most of the nerfs, even if they are startling the first time you encounter them. I restarted a save file when I bought this expansion, so I still have yet to even touch the tainted characters, but I can say at least the base game seems to have improved.
I've been really enjoying all the balance changes in Repentance as well as the extra content to the point that I bumped up my score for the overall game from a 9 to a 10. Already had 1000+ hours in Afterbirth+ and have now put another 200+ in Repentance so far and feel like I'm only scratching the surface. Haven't even touched a majority of the Tainted characters yet.
Love the Hell (pun intended) out of this game, and this update just gives me more to love. Btw don't think I didn't notice that Drawn Together joke.
Feels weird seeing an expansion that actually gives you a bunch of content objectively viewed as a con.
Greed Mode is honestly way more fun on PC with the mod that lets you start with 99 coins. Gives you an interesting choice of starting build.
@BenAV
I saw your name on one of the Isaac dailies, so I was interested in hearing how much a fan you are. If I combine my Rebirth hours, I think I match your time played, but I certainly did not have the stamina you had for Afterbirth.
@Arawn93
I agree, but it feels accurate. My takeaway from that is that it would have been nice to have a full-blown sequel rather than another expansion. As Gipp mentioned, 20 new characters is great. Playing Greedier with 20 new characters is not, but you will need to if you want to see all of the content.
Binding of Isaac has never appealed to me. Too dark. Too much suffering in an oddly comedic game.
I don't get all the Greed mode hate; the reviewer's complaining about TBoI losing its pick-up-and-play-edness, but Greed mode is the most pick-up-and-play-ey mode in the game. A beaten run is thirty minutes, tops.
I wouldn't want to question this writer's opiniom.
I though extremely high of this game before but after this DLC I'd say at this point I can say that this is now among some of my favorite games of all time.
For my money it's the primo roguelike, every playthrough is different, there is really nice balance between skill & luck, there are so many challlenges and unlocks you can go for, and different characters you can use. On top of all that it also has a really nice soundtrack. I really, really love this game and I'm so happy I got over my initial distaste for the game because of the artstyle, would've been a real travesty if I had missed all this just because of that.
Finished the original game on my ipad 4-5 years ago, it was fun, I put many hours into it. Trying to replay this game, and i fell just overwhelmed by all the new things. A dlc should add new things, not rebalancing all the game.
Has the game added any sort of “item explainer” or something similar? I used to play the game on PC and that was an absolutely essential mod. The blatant Christian theming of the game makes me a bit uncomfortable, but what is confession for eh!
@Chocobo_Shepherd For me the theme has simply always been too off-putting. It reminds me of those gross-out comedy kind of things like Garbage Pail Kids that is meant to gross you out all the time. It's just never appealed to me.
Kind of a shame too because it always played well enough, but I simply find it unpleasant.
Brilliant game. It’s a 10 if you love it. It does seem expensive and a risky buy mind. It’s definitely worth it if it clicks. Game of the year good 👍🏻
Isaac is the only game that keeps me from saying "I dont like roguelike games". Dead Cells didn't do it for me, Enter the Gungeon didn't interest me not even Hades, but Binding of Isaac did and I will happily struggle (I suck at this game) through this DLC.
It's finally on switch?
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
That is all.
Would love to play it, but as I own the physical version I certainly can't justify spending £54 on an indie game (£35.99 for the required digital version and £17.99 for the DLC itself).
@DeclanS98 the Issac Guide app is essential imo
@JayJ I feel the same way. The style just puts me off.
Too much to do? That is what is wrong with today's gamers, I hear critics say this game is too short, it ends too soon, now it's too much to do as a negative. Just like critics complain about yoshi and Kirby being too easy, then along comes metroid dread and shin megami tensei V and now they say they games are too hard, so which is it? You can never have too much to do in a game for REAL GAMERS, I welcome it. You get more bang for your buck, so I say bring it on. I will take as much gameplay l can get, even if it has hundreds of hours of things to do, I say bring it on, the more the merrier.
@michellelynn0976 To be fair there’s hundreds of critics out there, it’s a bit silly to imply they should be in consensus about everything - some reviewers will prefer short games, some will prefer long, yeno.
@Bakajin runs never really feel particularly different from one another, especially if you're trying to do greedier mode where it can feel doubly necessary to get a game breaking loadout; trying to beat it as the lost before getting repentance and it's been an unbelievable slog
@michellelynn0976 numerous factors: amount of time someone has to play the game, how fun the additional content is (in this case, I've heard complaints the tainted characters are unbalanced/not well thought out in certain cases), whether someone prefers long or short games; reviewers have as many preferences as people do and definitions of "too hard/long/easy/short" will differ and occasionally a game will feel bloated under the weight of its own burgeoning content
@BenAV So you put in the same amount of time I put in an average length visual novel? 😆
@michellelynn0976 I agree with you 100% . Michelle, if critics only like short games, then don't play the long ones. And let us real gamers who enjoy them , play them, I agree you can NEVER HAVE TO MUCH TO DO IN a great game, look at Zelda and xenoblade games, if it didn't have all that content, critics would complain, critics just need to shut the hell up.look at Mario golf , all critics have done is said, it doesn't feel like a complete game, now it has a lot of content, so which is it? Make up your mind critics or just shut up and play the game.
@mariopartyfan68 why do you even read reviews, this comment and the one immediately after read like "first the one bear said the porridge was too hot, now another says it's too cold! make up your mind, people! i can't imagine an imbetween, so there is no such thing as hot or cold!"
@DeclanS98 yeah, just like mario golf. Right? I agree with Michelle, all critics did was moan that Mario golf was not a complete game because of not enough content, now they are complaining because of too much? They've like short games, is just a lame excuse, critics are paid off biased game players who do not know what really great games are. So which is it? Not enough like Mario golf, or too much like this game? Critics cannot have it both ways.
I'd love if this got a physical European release. Would pick it up day one! Yes, I'm aware of the US release. Don't want it.
@mariopartyfan68 Again, you realise it’s not the same critics complaining about both things?
@somebread What? Read the comments correctly.
@DeclanS98 Again, they will still let one game get away with it. Then, hire better critics.
10/10, and anything less is unacceptable
I have over 1 thousand hours on PS4.. I had 850 exactly (edit: on Switch) before Repentance came out.. now I’m over 1020 hrs.. can’t stop playing this omg.. Repentance really made this game so much more beautiful and interesting.. I don’t get how people don’t like this game.. it’s super addicting and I’m a 32(m)
@Aerona Thamk you.
This game is my favorite video game of all time. It makes me smile any time I pick it up. And each and every run is unique and different and a surprise. It is my forever game. I've unlocked maybe 50% of the game and I'm so excited that I have so much more to look forward to. <3
Just waiting on the patch for the EU physical, I bought the expansion and doesn’t work yet, it’s in the works supposedly.
I just want to play this damn thing!
Also can’t get the US physical as doesn’t deliver to my little island of Guernsey, just like UK Nintendo store
@JayJ Could not agree more. Perfectly said.
*** not yet compatible with the physical version*** huge bummer for this chump who bought it physically
BibleThump
Perfect console for Isaac.
I was so disappointed when i bought the original. This game is definitely not for me; But it says the graphics are redrawn? They look exactly the same in the screenshots.
@Chocobo_Shepherd
Had to stop playing this when I became a father, poorly babies are not my bag no more....
This is the only game I’ve come across that I really enjoyed the loop and how it played but had to stop it because morally it felt wrong playing a game that had headless babies, child abuse, and the biblical themes made me uncomfortable.
I'm so getting this once I get my X-mas bonus!
Repentance takes all the fun out of the game and really makes the early game even more of a slog than it already was. Just shoot and shoot and shoot forever until maybe you get an item that isn’t worthless or hasn’t been nerfed to death
Finally it has been released for us Physical card people.
OMG what the hell is going on? This is just a massive update with so many extras it should have been just another game entirely.
Loving it so much, I still die a hell of a lot (think i'm up to winning streak of -60 so far) but don't care, just keep on playing
@somebread Excuses then.
@michellelynn0976 three months to think on that and that's all you have...?
@somebread I was away. I just saw this.
@michellelynn0976
Same.
