@Caryslan At this point, I'd just be going through the old laundry list of complaints. All of Nintendo's failings can fall under one of two categories:
1. Not keeping up with the times.
2. Trying too hard to be different, usually at the expense of something that works.
"Denatonium, usually available as denatonium benzoate (under trade names such as BITTERANT-b, BITTER+PLUS, Bitrex or Aversion) and as denatonium saccharide (BITTERANT-s), is the most bitter chemical compound known, with bitterness thresholds of 0.05 ppm for the benzoate and 0.01 ppm for the saccharide. It was discovered in 1958 during research on local anesthetics by MacFarlan Smith of Edinburgh, Scotland, and registered under the trademark Bitrex. Dilutions of as little as 10 ppm are unbearably bitter to most humans. Denatonium salts are usually colorless and odorless solids but are often traded as solutions. They are used as aversive agents (bitterants) to prevent inappropriate ingestion. Denatonium is used in denatured alcohol, antifreeze, nail biting preventions, respirator mask fit-testing, animal repellents, liquid soaps, and shampoos. It is not known to pose any long-term health risks." — Wikipedia
@BinaryFragger Being last place in the console market in terms of being taken seriously by gaming culture in general* for the past four generations at least, we're a pretty cynical and defensive bunch. While I'm glad that Spencer seems to be open-minded, I don't really blame anyone else for thinking he has sinister intentions; if anything, it's a way to cope with our fear of the Switch being the fifth failure in a row.
(*Meaning not sales numbers. The Wii sold well, but gaming culture still hated it.)
Normally I'm the first to lash out at Nintendo for taking something down. I am, after all, an info-anarchist who's vocally against IP in general. But even I think they were within their rights here. These guys were, after all, making money off of it.
Unpopular and unreasonable opinion: I still think it's a mistake to ramp up production. The shortages were the main thing that made Amiibo and the NES Classic so desirable despite their limited use; complaint and desperation is still discussion. If they want the Switch to not bomb, they need every dirty trick they can muster.
I'm not saying I'd enjoy it as a consumer. I'm just being realistic from a business perspective.
I've actually read that blog post quite a while ago, and an unfortunate number of my Windows 98/XP games have definitely succumbed to this, I've found...
The issue is, TVs only have so many ports. To even hook up the Switch, something else will have to go, so it needs to cover the functions of whatever it replaces. It's the same reason the lack of backwards compatibility is such a dealbreaker for me.
So he expects it to be literally the second-highest-selling console of all time, only not being first because the PS2 had a perfect window of timing the likes of which will never happen again?
I already knew he wasn't that smart, but this is just asinine.
@Syrek24 I wanted to apologize for yesterday. I was talking big and I let myself get out of hand. I don't actually pirate retail games.
My stance on fan works still hasn't changed, and I still strongly believe that "fan work = copyright infringement" is about as relevant of a law as "don't wash a fish in a faucet if it's not a fish-washing faucet in a national forest" — meaning I believe that it's one of those laws that, though it's in the books, it's not reasonable to enforce — but that's just my stance on the matter. If there's consequences for it, then those consequences will be mine to face. I'm comfortable with my stance because I don't believe there will be, because a notable number of content creators vocally feel the same way. But, if I'm wrong, then I'm going to accept defeat and face it with dignity, not kicking and screaming.
@Syrek24 People like you are the ones who pushed me into this attitude. In fact, I think it was you specifically. I remember seeing you in past comment sections.
I know what the law says. The law bans fan fiction and fan art, too. Plenty of those have been taken down in the past. (Just look up Anne Rice, who's infamous for C&D-ing authors of fanfics for her book "Interview With A Vampire".) But the law isn't holy, infallible, and unquestionable. There's a reason most content creators willingly ignore fan fiction and fan art. Sometimes, it's the law that needs to be changed.
I'll stop breaking the law when the law gets half a brain. I'll stop supporting the harmful when the harmless stops getting lumped in with it.
I never said it was justified. But if they don't want me to "steal IPs" by enjoying harmless fan works, then I'm gonna steal IPs harder just to defy them.
Things like the comment section here are why I now proudly support piracy. If you want to call fans thieves for wanting to pay tribute to series they like, I might as well take advantage of it and go all the way with what I've apparently been doing anyway.
I successfully registered, I used Snorlax's Hold Back on every random encounter I could, and I caught several hundred for the challenge. My boxes are filled with Lilipups and Caterpies... You can't blame me for jack squat.
They're lying through their teeth. The alleged Switch version will face the exact same quote unquote "technical problems". They, like Project Cars, just don't want the embarrassment of being on a Nintendo platform. Just wait and see.
The timing's not a coincidence. They're asking for help now because Miiverse was hacked repeatedly for several hours by Arian and PF2M yesterday. I'm astonished NintendoLife didn't report on THAT.
