Some of you will have a shiny new Switch, and you may want to give it a little extra jazz to its appearance. Plenty liked buying skins for their Wii U GamePad, for example, and at present the many awesome official cover plates for the smaller New Nintendo 3DS still do the trick.
Nintendo Switch owners may be wise, though, to wait for officially released and licensed skins for the Joy-Con controllers and console, as one third-party has taken the noble step of warning against what would have been its own products.
dbrand - which makes various skins for multiple systems - ran into problems testing its planned products, and rather than ship them and hope for the best has done a good job of preserving its reputation by holding back and warning gamers of the dangers. Below are some pictures of the damage done by its products in testing.
The issue seems to affect the Joy-Con controllers and console. An excerpt of the company's Reddit post is below.
We're here to make a public service announcement that under no circumstances should you be buying a vinyl skin / wrap for your Nintendo Switch. Seems like a counter-intuitive narrative from the world's leading skin manufacturer, right? Allow us to explain.
Simply put, the coating which exists on the JoyCons (and the console – more on that later) is either cured or designed in a way which doesn't play well with adhesive.
...Again, we decided to reserve judgement on whether the Console would be skin-able until we purchased a retail unit to compare against the potentially non-final early unit which we were prototyping with.
As you can guess, we purchased a retail unit (ten, in fact… just to make sure it wasn't an isolated issue) and both the Joy-Cons and the Console are not compatible with vinyl wraps or any adhesive-backed skin of any kind.
This is really quite unfortunate, not just because we were going to make a ton of money from this console, but more-so because it genuinely did look dope with a skin [pictured first, above]
As for anyone who pre-ordered a Switch skin, we'll be refunding your order in full over the next 72 hours. Upon execution, you can expect an email from our customer service robots confirming that the refund has been processed. If you pre-ordered a Switch skin alongside other item(s), you'll receive a refund for only the Switch portion and the remaining pieces will ship normally.
Credit to dbrand for taking the hit, as it were, and sounding a cautious note to all looking at third-party skins for their Switch. There are some officially licensed options on the way, so perhaps they will be the way to go.
With thanks to all that sent this in.

Damn, that's too bad.
I'm sure there will be a ton of special edition joy-cons but that would have been nice.
Gotta respect thier honesty with the issue.
If the official ones don't have issues won't they be able to copy that?
Well crap since my system and soon to be dock are covered in some Zelda skins. I'll have to keep a close eye on both and removed them if necessary.
Oh wow. I can't come up with words to thank dbrand for their honesty
I remember when I got controller sticks for my NES controllers in Nintendo Power back in the day. That adhesive residue is still on my controllers, and why I'll never put ahesive anything on my systems or controllers.
@Paddle1 Nope. Just means those "official" Zelda skins are an apply once and never take it off again afair.
Seems Nintendo has not only been cheapskating on the internals and screen protection glass (=plastic), but also on the external materials. /sad
There are already complains reported about the Switch console scratching up due to the dock after just some days, since there is no protective lining inside the dock. Another dissapointing cheapskate move by Nintendo.
@Jeronan by 'skimp' you mean 'make sure it doesn't cost $500' you mean.
@Jim_Purcell the Xbox and Playstation never costed $500 and were hardplastic on the outside to prevent from stickers ruining the outside.
The PSVita has a proper hardened protection glass on the screen, as I have zero scratches after years of use.
I rather pay 20-30 bucks extra and have a console that will be long lasting and still has some resale value after couple years of use.
Seems to me the Switch console and joy-cons will be ready for the recycle bin after couple years heavy use, as they will be so damaged, that you can forget about any trade-in value or resale value in general.
@Jeronan people just need to learn how to take care of their stuff. I still use retro hardware I used as a child, never wore out an N64 controls stick, even with heavy use, and have never cracked a smart phone or tablet screen. It's not hard to be gentle putting your Switch in the dock, there is lots of space.
@Jim_Purcell Those were the days Nintendo (and other manufacturers in general) still made high quality Heavy duty Products that were made to last.
Nintendo isn't that kind of Company anymore in the days of Gameboy and SNES.
I am always extremely careful With my systems, almost OCD like.
I bought a special Zelda edition of the New 3DS XL last year january and just 10 months later the gold Paint was already coming off the console in the corners. Just blistering off.
I always store my Handhelds in high quality storage cases.
Just really dissapointed and now Reading these first report of how easily the console scratches up when placing and removing it from the dock and the screen being plastic and now this report from dbrand.
I mean... we don't even get a single game with this console and costing more here in Norway than the WiiU Premium+game bundle back at launch. I had just expected a bit higher quality from Nintendo.
Especially at a Premium price this console is selling for at the moment. I can right now buy a PS4 Pro here for just 10 bucks extra compared to the Switch.
I wonder if the issues have something to do with the bad tasting denatonium benzoate coating that the console seems to have as well just like the Game Cards?
(I don't actually know. Mine hasn't arrived yet. But a friend tasted the Joy-Con and they seem to taste awful too )
Darn shame. MKBHD is going to bad sad about this news.
Oh, that's not good! I really don't get why people would opt for aaaaallll those cheap, third-party peripherals. I really don't see any use, and I guess they are often weak quality!
@Moshugan I tasted everything, including cartridges. Nothing tastes bad but the cartridges. The charging grip has sort of an odd taste, but it's nothing special. The cartridges made me gag.
I think this is really telling.
"As you can guess, we purchased a retail unit (ten, in fact… just to make sure it wasn't an isolated issue) and both the Joy-Cons and the Console are not compatible with vinyl wraps or any adhesive-backed skin of ANY kind."
I appreciate their honesty. Are other companies going to be so honest? Probably not when there's money at stake. Makes you wonder did Nintendo use some cheap kind of plastic or new proprietary compound? This really shouldn't be happening. Thankfully, I've never had any interest in skins.
@Jeronan Did you forget the disaster that was the PlayStation 3's launch price?
@Jeronan The Switch is built to last, alright. For people who don't roughhouse it, at least. I got mine early and it's been in use 16 hours a day at least, no marks, scratches or anything. I regularly take it out of the dock and use all the different modes (TV/handheld/tabletop), and it is showing no signs of having been used, other than the occasional dust on the screen. Taking it out of the dock without damaging it is super easy. If you're worried, just buy some tiny stickers for putting under chair legs. If you buy the thin ones and pop them inside the dock, there's 0 chance of damaging anything, even if you're rough.
What a shame! I really wanted to get a SNES skin for the Switch.......
Wow...!
What kind of chemical reaction between Switch body and Vinyl skin ?
Why it didn't happen to Wii mote and Wii U gamepad ?
Wait... is that means Sticker can make a mess too ?
Glue sniffing is not good for your switch but boggles the mind,
@Jeronan None of my products from Nintendo have ever been scratched or damaged. Except for a gamecube controller which had the rubber come off the control stick thanks to mashing the control stick (Thank you very much Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi) but as far as my Switch goes, I've had it since day one, been playing it consistently and repeatedly switched between TV mode and Handheld mode.
No scratches. No issues. No problems.
See, the issue isn't the console - its the people using it. I get that a select few have made you believe the console is the problem by saying they just took it out of the dock and it had a scratch, but I'm 100% certain they aren't telling you the whole story. A friend of mine has Switch too and he's not had a single problem with it. Neither of us have even had to worry about the left joy-con issue.
So what does this all mean? I think its pretty straightforward, you mistreat a console, its going to get a few marks and blips here and there. Treat it carefully though and it'll last as intended. Take that as you will.
Shame indeed. To be honest, the damage looks kind of cool, in sort of a vintage way like an old t-shirt. Wouldn't do that to mine though lol.
@ThatNyteDaez
Have you tried the official vinyl skin for Switch ?
Wonder if it has same issues even you treat it carefully...
I got the PDP Zelda skins licensed by Nintendo. I'm not concerned because when I put a skin on, it stays on. I never change them and I baby my stuff to the point there is little to no wear on the device or skin
@ShikabaneHime13 I was thinking of you when I saw this, but figured it wouldn't be a big deal for you as a lot of people leave the skins on
@Jeronan Could you do me a favor and shut up? In fact, I think that would do us all a favor.
No one cares for your nagging. What are you, 80? I wouldn't be surprised if your next comment started with "Back in my day..."
It's a shame that you don't have enough dignity or enough respect for the happy Switch owners on this site to not elevate a competitor's product on this column page. This is Nintendolife, not PushSquare, another site I visit regularly. If you want to talk about how wonderful the PlayStation is you can go there.
I don't mean to get so steamed, it's just that I know all about trolls like you. You like to think out loud as of you want the public to swallow your opinion.
It's okay to be disappointed in Nintendo, and it's okay to not favor the Switch, I mean no single gaming device will please everyone, but you don't have to throw your grumpy opinions in people's faces. That's annoying.
@audiobrainiac "the damage looks kind of cool, in sort of a vintage way like an old t-shirt."
I was thinking the same thing about the damage on the Switch logo. But I wouldn't do that to my Switch either.
@CircuitWrangler3
So I am not allowed to complain about a clearly rushed to market Product?
I have a PS4 and a WiiU! I am happy with both! Had zero issues with both!
I have a Switch + Zelda on pre-order, but didn't get it yesterday since the retailer and courier messed up.
When I get my Switch on monday and the joy-cons start acting up when playing undocked and Nintendo being unable to fix this through software update and refusing to acknowledge it's a hardware issue (seeing their "official" statement them stating I have to practically clear out my entire livingroom and turn everything off except my TV ......).
Well.... then back it goes and I will instead take a wait and see approach.
The Switch is already overpriced here in Norway (almost same price as PS4 Pro) and I won't accept a subpar product!
Not from Nintendo, not from anyone! If I had received my PS4 with controllers acting up like that and Sony unable to fix it, I would have returned it too.
they bought ten switches so thats where all the pre orders are
@CircuitWrangler3
U shouldn't be so opiniated and prejudice towards Age,do u have something against ppl that are 80.my grandmother wants a word with you. Also what's wrong with "Back in my day" gaming wasn't born when u first picked up a controller,we were using them before then "back in my day". Your prejudices towards age(older) is offensive and maybe you should shut up
Seems classy, but unless they tested OTHER manufacturers adhesives as well, it's really just bad sportmanship and an unscientific claim.
Noble move indeed. Never heard of them before, but now I certainly will have.
@Aslanmagic
Yeah, it's no big deal for me. I mean, unless you're constantly changing skins (which is fine if you want to vary the look every so often), then I don't see this being an issue.
However!
If the adhesive were to degrade the system/controllers' coating over time and you were to trade it in down the road and remove the skin only to have this still happen, then it would be problematic I think
Just want to share what I've heard from Amazon customer reviews:
Screen Protectors, including the Super Expensive official one from Hori, are apparently peeling off after the Switch is put in the dock.
This is especially concerning with other reports saying their Switch screens are getting scratched by placing them in the dock.
What about the Breath of The Wild screen protector and skins that came out with the Switch at Gamestop? Do I need to refund it?!!
Makes me want to go out and buy something of theirs.
@VR32F1END
I have those (as posted above with pictures). As I said, I put skins on once and they stay on for the life of the system. Unless one is constantly changing out their skins, I don't forsee this being an issue. And I certainly hope the officially licensed ones wouldn't have that issue
Terrible that this wasn't caught in testing, but big respect for owning up and putting the customer before profit. I didn't get skins because I wanted to wait and see how things go. I won't lie those Zelda skins are soooo sweet. I am hoping they make green and gold joy cons
@Jeronan Like I said, you have every right to be disappointed, I'm happy that you are enjoying your consoles, and I'm sorry that technology is so costly where you are. But, I have to tell you that there's no use in complaining, unless you send it directly to the company. No console has been perfect since the SNES though, but, we've learned overtime to take the good with the bad. And I think that most buyers of the Switch are happy with it, I'm one of them.
And Listen, there's been a lot of noobs cough*CNET*cough misusing the Switch and trying to legitimize false complaints. I have one and I can tell you that I haven't experienced any latency, scratching, or tipping (😜 CNET) whatsoever.
The Switch is very sturdy, sleek, and responsive. Once you get it in your hands and look it over, you'll be surprised at how well constructed it is. The screen on the console at 720p is obviously not the sharpest on the market, but it's crisp and vivid, not to mention that it supports some decent black levels. I haven't played mine in console mode yet, but I've heard from many users that it's a comfortable experience.
Anyway, I hope you get your Switch, and I hope you enjoy it. And let's hope you don't run into any defects.
@Jeronan I totally understand your PS4 Pro price comparison and don't consider it 'console warz', but let's be fair: PS4 Pro also had problems at launch, and I haven't kept a close enough eye on it to know what's been fixed.
Also, please don't believe everything you're reading regarding issues from a few people (and honestly 1 person on NeoGAF re: docks scratching consoles) that are getting amplified in the echo chamber of the internet.
My Switch is docked on a metal rolling cart, tucked under a monitor, right next to an RF Wireless Sony headphone station (while said headphones are on my head) and about a foot from the WiiU and a docked gamepad, a router and a wi-fi hub. Plus, the top of the rolling cart has aluminum foil on it to keep my cat, who is also on my lap between the Joy-cons and the Switch, from jumping on it. I've had 1 incident before and 1 since I updated. it lasted about a second both times before I noticed it, I moved my controller in some arbitrary direction, it gained the signal back and I put it where it was. I've had more actual issues with 360 controllers disconnecting at random and Wii motes de-syncing on low battery. It was an obvious glitch regarding signal power when JC's were undocked in the press units and has been solved.
The claims about the dock scratching screens are also ridiculous. There are soft rubber guides past the screen by the bezels and their not even snug! It's impossible for the screen to touch the hard plastic when docked. You can only scratch it on the way in by being completely negligent, scratching it across the top somehow, or having something abrasive on the very top and inside of the bumper, which the only possible point of contact.
Tl;dr you're entitled to how you want to spend your money, but if you don't have a Switch please get out of the echo chamber of misinformation.
@CircuitWrangler3 I know there are a lot of false reports out there and I know which channels to avoid.
Digital Foundry is not one of them and I have come to respect them over the years.
I am really worried about the signal issues with the Joy-cons, like I said in another thread, since we have a large livingroom with a large TV and as such our sofa is 5-6 meters away from the TV.
Now they are legitimate reports stating that the signal already starts dropping off beyond 1 meter away and Nintendo's "official" statement is worrying as well.
Bluetooth can easily handle signal up to 10 meters and even more un-obstructed.
I have two Bluetooth headphones and the PS4 Controllers are Bluetooth as well and I had zero issue with signal over long distances in my livingroom with everything turned on ( Wireless router, Phones, tablets lying around on coffee table, etc ).
So if these joy-cons can't handle more than 1 meter distance undocked, then clearly something is wrong and it has nothing to do with limitations of Bluetooth Technology, like Nintendo tries to insinuate in their latest statement.
@Jeronan Read my post right above yours. I have literally every single thing Nintendo recommends against regarding bluetooth issues short of an aquarium and then some, and have had no more issues than any other wireless controller, and less than some.
It was a glitch and the update fixed it.
Edit: haven't tested it past 10ft (3-ish meters). 6 meters sound ridiculously far to me unless you play on a movie screen, but I'll take your word on it that your DS4 and works at 20 feet unobstructed.
My Gold Wireless can start cutting out 3-4 meters if their is any obstruction and that's always seemed reasonable.
@Spiders How far are you sitting from the TV / dock?
Some reports are stating that the issues start when moving more than 1-2 meters away from the dock.
Just for Reference, Bluetooth 4 specifications state a Maximum range of 60 meters.
We are currently at Bluetooth Version 4.2 (released 2014).
EDIT: We have a large livingroom and a 62inch TV, so it's not strange or weird to then sit about 5-6 meters away from the TV.
We have an open TV bench, so all consoles are placed in line of view un-obstructed.
I had no issues with the WiiU gamepad (though think that one uses WiFi, since my son can play downstairs in his bedroom on the gamepad without issues (we have wooden house).
I have had zero issues at this distance with the DS4 Controllers and the Sony PS4 Bluetooth headphone.
Before that I had a XBOX360 and no issue with those Controllers either at that dinstance.
Unless there is a massive concrete wall between your TV and Sofa or you have a Microwave standing on your coffee table (lol), Bluetooth can easily handle a stable strong signal over 5-6 meters. That is nothing.
@Jeronan Mainly around 6-8 feet (1.25 to 2.43 meters). I'm going to check right now how far I can get in my apartment and compare vs DS4 and Gold headset gimme a few minutes.
@NintySnesMan I'm sorry, did I mention your grandmother? Your ignorance is offensive. We all have grandmothers, and hopefully we all love our grandmothers. Mine, on my mother's side passed away.
Don't you dare accuse me of hate or prejudice against the elderly. You don't even know me. I had an older neighbor, where I used to live that I helped everyday. I have nothing but respect for the elderly.
Now, with all that being said, I will admit that I could have worded my earlier comment a bit better, and I understand how the content may have offended you. For that, I apologise. I can assure you that there was no intent to offend.
Now as for the "back in my day"
comment, I have no issues with valuing the past. How could I? I have a lot of great memories myself. My problem is with constant complaints that lead to no action. In my book, you either push for change or you learn how to deal.
PDP says their decals work fine and it's only that one brand

@Jeronan
I got my Switch yesterday, and am happy to report both pairs of my Joycons work flawlessly. I tested behind the back, closed in my other fist, pointed the opposite direction standing in the farthest corner of my room. Not a single hiccup, and I should note I have multiple other wireless devices active right next to Switch.
Not to say you won't have trouble, at this point it's anyone's guess. But I can at least confirm mine have no problems even under heavy testing. Idk if this has anything to do with it, but I did make sure to connect Joycons to the Switch when I updated and rebooted. So, at the very least, take comfort in knowing there are people out there who aren't experiencing any issues whatsoever.
I have the zelda skin coming. Its officially licensed by Nintendo, but i think ill only use the screen protector that comes with it
@Radbot42
That was initally what I was going to do but looking at the skins in person, I decided to just apply everything
@JaxonH Thanks! Happy to read you have no issues after such testing.
Fingers crossed when I get my Switch on monday.
PS. Regarding PDP statement. They probably use stickers with a much weaker adhesive, meaning it will come off much more easily over time with wear.
Dbrand produces very high quality strong adhesive Products that endure longterm wear and tear.
The problem With the Switch is, I think, is that Nintendo opted to use a softer plastic for the joy-cons and console to be able to better handle impact on drops and reduce the chance of cracks.
The downside of that, is what you see above posted by dbrand and that the console will more easily scratch over time.
@Jeronan I'm in an apartment so it's really hard to get a far enough distance relatively unobstructed where I can still see the monitor.
I can get 4.5 meters before signal gets erratic (using the calibrate screen like Gamexplain) with the way my Switch is docked right now at shoulder level, flat, with where the left JoyCon would slot in facing me.
Can't really test the DS4 the same way because the menus are laggy anyway, but my Gold Wireless works fine at that distance.
I really just plopped everything on and haven't rearranged my setup yet, so I'll try again when I set it up properly and get the huge wireless RF tower and foil off haha
Also just to be clear: it's not a Bluetooth compliance issue, it's how much power the bluetooth transmittets are drawing from the JoyCon when undocked. It is STILL using bluetooth when attached to the system at a lower power, thus the glitch in the press units: the JoyCons weren't switching to a higher power setting when detached. THAT has been fixed by the day 1 update, but from my very rudimentary testing it's not as strong as other devices to conserve battery. JoyCons last approx. 20 hours (so I've heard, haven't tested myself) where a DS4 might last 6 and the Gold Headset around 4.
@ShikabaneHime13 I'll probably apply the ones to the dock and maybe the back if the console, but i have the tongue sticjer coming for the grip and putting the stickers onto the cons will take away from the puppy look. Will put the eye things on the joysticks though. Have uou had the dock destroy the screen protector in any way. It seems like it might not last long now
@Spiders Thanks for trying! Really appreciated.
I will try post my findings after monday too, when receiving the Switch (hopefully).
@Radbot42
Sounds like an awesome plan! And no, haven't noticed any kind of damage whatsoever from the dock upon the system
@Jeronan For sure! I edited my last comment with some more info if you wanna check it. Hope it works out for you and sorry for some of the nasty replies on here:/
@Jeronan Hey man, I wanted to apologise for calling you a troll and telling you to shut up. I misread your intent and was reacting, I guess. We all make that mistake from time to time.
@ShikabaneHime13 i have that on mine as well.
@CircuitWrangler3 No problem!
I have just become very critical over the years towards hardware manufacturers and none get a free pass, be it Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Apple, Intel, etc.
Nintendo is selling the Switch for a Premium price (especially here, like I mentioned earlier). That comes with certain expectations.
PS. I am 40 and not 80.
@CircuitWrangler3
No worries mate. I was just fooling around u didn't offend me,just wondered if u had something against age. Anyways well done for helping the elderly and sorry for your loss, I lost mine about 10 years back on mothers side. Yep nothing wrong with back in the day but now is now and tomorrow is the future,who knows what gaming delights it will bring whatever machine ppl own.
My dock is on my sideboard at other side of room so i sit infront of tv about 5 metres away from it. No issues with joycons at all.
Also, no scratches on screen coz when u put switch in dock it is back of it that touches the dock as it slides in.
Damn I wanted to get one!
@Jeronan Got my Switch yesterday and everything seems to work fine with the Joycons. As for the plastic screen, I watched some drop tests on youtube and after 11 hits the screen was still in one piece. I know it's not the best for scratches but I'll take a plastic screen any day over a fragile glass one like our smartphones have nowadays.
Also, I'm pretty sure I saw some padding after inspecting my Switch dock because I was also worried about scratches. Do you own the device or you just read about the dock scratch issue somewhere? I'm really interested to see why this happened and how I can possibly avoid it.
All in all, the build quality is fantastic and surprised everyone I showed it to. If you haven't gotten yours and plan to, you won't be disappointed, it's a fine piece of hardware
Great to hear the company being honest about their product's faults and putting the consumers first rather than profit.
Fair play to Dbrand. Very honest.
@Ballzilla
It is a lovely, lovely bit of hardware isn't it?
I'm surprised to hear about people scratching theirs in the dock. I shouldn't tempt fate but it seems to me you'd basically have to be doing it wrong.
I wonder if that's why the official accessory packs come with rubber JoyCon covers and not stickers?!
Wow Somebody who actually cares. My hat is off to you sir. I think most companies wouldn't have given this issue a second thought.
@Spiders I thought when the Joycons were connected to the Switch they had an electrical connection. When in airport mode (radios off) the Joycons still work when attached.
@Blizzia LOLLLLLL
Not sure I call it noble. You can't buy THEIR screens, so they say not to buy anyone's.
To the Zelda skins, I've had mine on for 168 hours (review skins from PDP and review console from Nintendo of Canada)...well they were on for that long, but I did a video peeling them off...
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IokIo_idJrE
I hope they at least put those 10 Switch units to good use, since that's more than Nintendo has even manufactured at this point.
Well in my country" Nuh respect".
@ShikabaneHime13 Wow, those really look good. I might opt for that.
I think learning about this would make me want to use skins even more so. I don't want whatever chemical agent has apparently been applied to the plastic shell to soak into my hands over time... Better the skin than me.
@Other-Brother No, because they work detached in airplane mode as well. It's low power, and airplane mode isn't a real standard that needs compliance.
I could be mistaken, but everything I've read regarding specs and teardowns leads me to believe there's no physical connection.
Edit: just look at the unit (duh) and there's no physical connection or metal contacts. Just the leds shining throufh which is probably how it detects they're in the slots.
i got a rubber/silicon grip for the joy-cons only. they add a grip bump to them and add slight girth overall that makes the switch nicer in handheld mode. they slip on and stay on with no adhesive so jsut avoid a skin that uses adhesives.
@ShikabaneHime13
Same here, it's too sexy to ever take off anyway.
@The__Goomba Actually they are avoiding potential lawsuits. Imagine the countless damaged devices if they hadn't issued a warning.
@Jeronan I also bought a special edition gold zelda new 3ds xl last year and mine has had heavy use, but the outside is still perfect no bubbling/lost of gold colour/no lost of zelda design ect at all. only thing it has is greasy finger marks on it till i polish it again, then it will have more greasy finger marks on it within another 10 mins after that lol.
I'm more of a case than a skin guy but doing this probably got these guys a lot of good will wonder if it'll translate into money.
It's very noble of them to say don't buy skins but meh! But they bought 10 Switches?!! 10 marvelous machines which could've actually gone to Ninty fans upon launch. Shame on them!
@ShikabaneHime13 boy does your baby look cool
