Re: Random: Masahiro Sakurai Says He Prefers To Buy Video Games Digitally

AmethystLeslie

I prefer digital, but physical for me is something I do for singleplayer experiences, so when I'm done, I don't have to put the cart back in. If I buy a digital game, it's something meant for me to just open for a little while and play to pass the time. Not even for progression's sake, I'm just exploring a Minecraft world in Creative, I'm just doing repeated Endurance runs in Puyo Puyo Tetris for the heck of it.

I've noticed that for certain games I got physically like Splatoon and Pokemon, the cart stays inside, that's just its home now for the next 500+ hours. Unless I decide to switch it out, of course.

Re: Talking Point: What Does Your Favourite Pokémon Say About You?

Primarina is beautiful, and is a special nuke in battle. However, when I like a Pokemon, I "like" the whole line, even if I actually don't, the final evolution is pretty much the best part, so what I'm saying is that I like Popplio and Brionne as well, and, well, I actually do. The designs are great, they're very cute, they eventually become Primarina.

I know Popplio was considered the underdog during pre-release SM, but I never really saw it as that. I just picked that one cuz I thought it was the cutest. Never did I imagine that it was the least liked of the starters.

So what DOES that say about me? Do I like things that are beautiful and strong? Am I the beautiful and strong one? I mean, I'd believe that one if I ever did anything productive...

Re: Talking Point: What Are The Nintendo Switch's Defining Moments (So Far)?

AmethystLeslie

Puyo Puyo Tetris 1 defined so much for me, so that's pretty much a major Switch milestone.

It's not just me, it was a major time for both series (Tetris had some backlash after Ultimate, and Puyo Puyo had rarely seen English localizations), and for early Switch owners back when there wasn't much out yet. This was one of the earliest online party games on Switch, and people had a good time and it revitalized the Puyo Puyo fanbase.

Re: Memory Pak: The Best And Most Chaotic Way To Play Puyo Puyo Tetris

"it's just Tetris with more colours and annoying characters, really"

"If you're going to hear the voice lines a lot, and they're all really irritating"

MMMMMMM I don't agree with those statements very much.

Look, maybe it sounds harsh to me, but I pretty much had the opposite experience with this game where I played the story mode and fell in love with everyone. I got used to the voice lines, and honestly, the characters and charm is like the best part of the series.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Start At 'The Beginning' Of Series Like Zelda Or Dragon Quest?

In the case of Pokemon, I would say to someone, "hey, start with whatever looks good. They're all good in some ways, even if the overall quality varies a bit." The bias in me also says to get a 3DS, since you can play MOST of the games on there, unless you want to specifically play Gen 3. I do wanna see someone who's never played a Pokemon game start from Gen 1 and play in order. Just to see their PoV, ideally not colored by too many opinions around the internet of "this gen sucks/no this gen sucks".

For Puyo Puyo, I once saw a tweet about which games to start with, and I pretty much agree with them. If you're interested for the Tetris gameplay, Puyo Puyo Tetris 1 is a good place to start, followed by PPT2. If you're interested in the gameplay, Puyo Puyo Champions is THE place to go. If you're interested in the characters, start with the fan translation for 20th Anniversary, although Tetris 1 isn't a bad place either.

If you have NSO, you already have a Puyo game! Super Puyo Puyo 2 is on the SNES app and is a better game than Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (and that's not me giving a hot take or being snooty; This is an actual fact) since you can actually counter garbage. Shame it's not translated, but it's fairly accessible.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Pokémon Game Ever?

AmethystLeslie

Up until SwSh, I had the opinion that whatever was the most recent game is the best game. That's when the Pokemon themselves are updated to have the most updated moveset, most updated mechanics, QoL improvements that make going back even one game just feels dated, everything is tweaked to be just a little bit better. The story itself matters almost nothing to the overall quality for me, unless it does (by which I mean it's actually worth a damn and not a cookie cutter plot), then it's instantly a higher tier than most others.

Re: Poll: No, Really, What Was Nintendo's Worst Year?

AmethystLeslie

I haven't been around gaming long enough to go further than the earlier half of the 2010s. I would still say 2015, cuz that was when the Wii U offerings that year were super slim. Even on the 3DS side, I wasn't that interested, but I've heard some good things.

I had Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, I was set for that year (it came out the November prior, so I spent my 2015-16 just playing that game). Looking back, I thought that Nintendo offering very little that piqued my interest was just me, and in some cases it was, but more often than not, it was indeed the games themselves that looked bad anyway.
