Throughout June, Japanese site Goo Ranking held a poll to see which Pokémon games would be voted as the most popular. It might not come as much of a surprise, but the original Pokémon Red and Green - released as Pokémon Red and Blue in the west - have come out on top.
You can see the top ten results below. It's interesting to see that almost all of the top ten is made up of mainline series games, with spin-offs and side series being pushed down the pecking order. If you're intrigued, out of the 63 different Pokémon games that could be selected, poor old Pokémon Link: Battle! came last with just one vote.
- Pokémon Red and Green (159 votes)
- Pokémon X and Y (102 votes)
- Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (101 votes)
- Pokémon Gold and Silver (91 votes)
- Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire (69 votes)
- Pokémon Black and White (44 votes)
- Detective Pikachu (43 votes)
- Pokémon Platinum (36 votes)
- Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver (32 votes)
- Pokémon Yellow (31 votes)
Total participants: 1,388
Conducted: Goo Ranking - 7th - 21st June, 2020
Do you agree? Would you put the originals on top, or would you vote for a newer entry? Let us know in the comments below, and feel free to check out our very own ranking here:

Pokemon gold and silver or heartgold and soulsilver are my favorites. Love me some Jhoto.
Heart Gold and Soul Silver will always be my favorites.
Well, Blue is the only one I've beaten so far, but I would rank my Moon and Sword copies above it in a heartbeat - there's just so much more going on therein in terms of plot, character roster, mechanics, QoL stuff etc. As is expected from franchise entries two decades apart, of course.
Gold/Silver/Crystal was my jam. While not the most technically polished enteries in the series, no pokemon games have quite hit the same levels of feels for me since.
My favourites are probably Platinum and Soulsilver.
I'll always have a soft spot for blue and silverm but I know that's mostly nostalgia.
I don't understand how X and Y ranked that high, I thought that they were commonly criticised?
Is it just that their poll demographic happened to have a lot of people who started with X and Y on the 3DS?
100% agree with the poll. I'm a little shocked, mostly because the hate X and Y get over here for some reason, but I agree. I loved X and Y. It was the first release since the original that was actually exciting to play.
So out of games that sell millions 1388 have voted, sounds like a total waste of time to me, and hardly represents the total fan base in any way.
No surprise here. The OG games are still so fun to play and the original 151 are simply iconic. I know people complain about Kanto being over used/represented but that’s what happens when its people’s favorite game in the series and has the series most poplar pokemon.
Pokemon Blue all the way! 😎
Silver/soulsilver a closed second
Gold, Silver and Crystal are my favourites while i think the series big highpoint is with HeartGold and SoulSilver what are incredible remakes. Red/Blue/Green/Yellow are still fun and are still good but they have aged a lot and in some cases not in a good way.
Surprised X/Y are 2nd though and i'm actually happy at that as they're brilliant games and felt like the biggest leap since Gen 2. Personally Gen 6 is my 2nd favourite Gen especially when you include the Gen 3 remakes.
BW2 should be 1, BW1 should be 2, HGSS should be 3, Pt should be 4, emerald should be 5.
X/Y at number 2... Seriously?
I loved the Kanto region, but Johto is where it is at for me.
I totally agree with this list except I like SoulSilver more than Diamond.
My favourite out of all of them would have to be Pokemon Emerald version.
Mine would definitely be Gold and Silver, that was just peak Pokemon for me. It was the high point for me back in the day and it has never been quite as fun since.
Either yellow or crystal for me
Ruby and Sapphire seem too high imo...too much water.
I like the Purple version better
Probably Black and White for me. Storyline was the best in that game.
For me, Gen 2 is my favorite. So by extension, HGSS are the high points of the series. It took a generation that had already took the series forward in exciting ways and made the definitive versions of those games.
As for X and Y. As someone said, in retrospect they're very good games. I think having come after Gen 5, they felt/feel a bit underwhelming. But considering where we are at now, I would put them at least in the top 5
Pokemon Gold/Silver for me.
Both generations are iconic. And the fact that you can go back to Kanto was so amazing back in the day, and still today.
Well, not too many people were voting.
Black/White are my favorites, but I do have a certain fondness for gen 1. Everything was so pure back then. It was just a rag tag of developers throwing around their wild ideas.
Gotta say Red cos I can’t speak Japanese.
HeartGold/SoulSilver are my favourites. There's so much extra things to do in it, and the Johto region and its native pokemon are lovely. Black 2/White 2 are my second favourites since they also have a lot of extra content in it. It's disappointing to see them down in 14th place. Platinum is the 3rd best one for me.
Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon Y for me. Never got the hate around that game.
Gold/Silver are the best, but Red/Blue/Yellow are my favorites
And they're still not available on Switch. I'm sure they'll make their way into the Switch when Nintendo is phasing the system out and ready to launch their next console going by Pokémon's standards.
I agree. These are my favorites as well
I'm happy that X and Y made #2 of the list, they're my favourites, it appeared on new hardware and actually did something with it (The leap to 3D graphics was quite something for the series), it added EV-training and Pokemon Amie, and to give the dead horse just one extra kick in the ribs, had all pokemon in it. (Even if the ability to get said pokemon into the game took a while to be implemented)
I've noticed "third versions" don't score well with these people.
91 people picking Gold/Silver but only 6 picking Crystal seems shocking.
My favorite generation has always been Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald.
Well I certainly like the designs of the Pokemon in the originals the most, as well as the fact there was a more manageable number of Pokemon back then too. Trying to "Catch 'Em All" must be a nightmare for Pokemon players now.
@RupeeClock The number of people polled really wasn’t very high, so I wouldn’t say this list necessarily reflects reality. X and Y only received one more vote than the third place spot and only 11 more votes than the fourth spot.
But I do think a lot of people like X and Y. A lot of people enjoyed mega evolution (especially now that it’s been taken out of the games), the introduction of the fairy type, and the variety of Pokémon available in the regional dex. For me personally, it ranks somewhere in the middle of the pack.
Gold and silver because of the end game content visiting Kanto and as annoying as chasing the legendary good bois around the world was, it was unique. Also the day)night cycle, intro to shinys and breeding were all really cool.
X&Y would be the second choice.
I didn't get on with Pearl/Diamond or Black/White as I didn't like the designs (except Trubbish)
Soul silver is still my favourite pokemon to this day
I started with the original games, but Gold/Silver/Crystal is the only correct answer. 😉
X and Y were awful. I hated the dialogue and characters in that game. It was clearly adults trying to write as if they were kids and it just didn't work.
Silver and Black 2 were my absolute favorites. Haven't enjoyed a Pokemon game since.
HeartGold/SoulSilver, Platinum, and BW/BW2 are the only ones I liked.
@impurekind If you've stuck with the series and you aren't a purist about actually catching them, then it really isn't. The fact you can store your Pokémon in storage, transfer them from previous ones and trade online is has made catching every last Pokémon (sans mythical ones) easier than it's ever been.
Of course, I can't speak for newbies or for those who choose to start completely over with every generation. I'm sure it probably feels daunting.
It's why I feel Sun and Moon had the best compromise for this. You could transfer every Pokémon to the game. But it didn't contain the actual National Pokedex, that being offloaded to Pokémon Bank. So one could play and not necessarily feel obligated in trying to catch every existing Pokémon. But the option was there for collectors to transfer all of their caught Pokémon up to that point. Personally, I only transfer Pokémon between games that would prove difficult to obtain other wise. Specifically legendaries, mythical Pokémon, Pokémon that evolve to through wacky means or ones that evolve at really high levels (like the dragons). Otherwise, I just go about catching most regular Pokémon
Everybody is going on about X & Y at #2 while ignoring Detective Pikachu at #7. Most fans if told there was only one spin-off game in the top 10 would guess Mystery Dungeon or Snap.
It is a good game (easy gameplay but great story) but the only reason it is in the top 10 is because of the movie.
There's so much wrong with this list IMO.
I always feel that the originals and the Johto journeys were just two parts. You need to play both for the full experience. They are probably on my top list.
@Arkay I like BW 2 as well. I wonder, is the World Championship what makes it the top for you?
I just love seeing all of those old Masters and Gym Trainers showing up.
Pokemon Red and Yellow hold special places in my heart as my first Pokemon games ever. By extension, Let's Go Pikachu was great because it was pure nostalgia with great visuals, plus I really liked the Pokéball Plus. But I think Gold and Silver topped the originals in every way & I'm really hoping they get a Let's Go remake!
Pokemon X and Y deserved it, they are the best Pokemon games in my opinion.
@MysticX
Me too bro.
@MysteryCupofJoe I gotta say the World Championships were indeed great, but it was mostly the story and music that got my attention.
I don't know why but no Pokemon game afterwards filled the void ever again.
Can we just talk about how Pokemon Crystal was 40th place?
Pokémon Black & White is my favorite game of the franchise, i love the in depth story and soundtrack of this games.
im suprised that Pokémon Sword & Shield is not in this poll, Japanese like us must have hated this games.
Best: X and Y
Second: Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
Third: Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee
@AmethystLeslie I never played the Crystal version but it did pique my interest. It just makes me wish that Nintendo made a cartoon series with these characters. I don't know why they stopped at Origins and Generations. I thought they would be motivated to do more.
I spent the most hours with Red, Yellow, Silver, SoulSilver, Black 2, Alpha Sapphire, and Ultra Sun. Of those, I'd still happily go back to Soul Silver but would argue GS combined the best of Gen I with what came next.
Pokemon Sun.
It may just be because it was my first Pokemon game, but it's still better than Let's Go To The Trash Can and Pokemon Flee.
You never forget your first one! Emerald for me. I even enjoyed the grinding in the cave with Zubat after Zubat. HeartGold was pretty much perfection as well.
Soulsilver. Played a hell lot of Silver back in the day but that remaster version nailed everything even better.
Platinum and Soulsilver for me.
