Re: 50 Best Game Boy Advance Games Of All Time

-wc-

@batmanbud2

Could be, though it's only natural when it's widely considered a) the best in the series, b) essentially the game that arguably set the "metroidvania" template for all time (for better or worse) and c) the only full fat, home console Castlevania game of type to ever be released, with no direct followup.

Anyway, in this case I was critiquing the writing, not the content. I'm personally fine with comparing games to SOTN, or not. πŸ‘

PS - "Castlevania is Castlevania."

I really don't think this is true, when there have been sequels and spinoffs in many genres, across many console generations, in 2d and 3d, and of wildly varying quality ✌️

Re: Europe Might Be Forcing Nintendo To Revise The Switch 2

-wc-

@ViewtifulCool

I'm 40.

Not exactly a whipper snapper, yet 10 years is fully 1/4 of my entire life. Or, half my adult life. it's a decade, my friend. did you ever hear someone waxing nostalgic about the 80s, in the 90s? There were whole movies about it and everything πŸ˜†

Obv this couldnt be more trivial or subjective, but assuming someone is a wee babe for calling 10 years "back in the day" just kinda took me off guard πŸ˜‚βœŒοΈ

PS -
"and now you're 14? well done.

nah. how old are you?"

user gave you every clue you need to figure out their age, easily.

Re: Review: Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition (Switch 2) - A Superb Port Of An Incredible RPG

-wc-

uhh, SPOILERS?

"You see, V isn’t alone. Lodged in their synapses they also have the personality of a long-dead terrorist and rockerboy Johnny Silverhand, breathtakingly realised by Keanu Reeves. Silverhand is slowly taking over V’s mind and body, but even he’s not entirely happy about it."

I just started playing this masterpiece, and 2 or 3 hours into the story this still hasn't been divulged. Unacceptable and unnecessary for the purposes of review, seriously.

My fault i suppose for risking it but this seems out of line for a review. IMO they really should be spoiler free.

EDIT - i got to the part with Johnny yesterday. the spoiler completely ruined those few scenes but now that I'm past it the "real" game has begun. What a great game!! 😍

"Following Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance β€” both of which fell short of hitting the same highs of Symphony of the Night β€” Koji Igarashi and his team returned to the Game Boy Advance with Aria of Sorrow, a game which many fans consider to be the second best 'Igavania' in the franchise."

So, it also fell short.

Re: Review: 8BitDo 64 Controller For Switch 1 & 2 - A Worthy Alternative To Nintendo's N64 Pad

-wc-

@HalBailman

"While the N64 stick was technically "digital" in design, in function it was truly analogue. That was the big selling point, notably, controlling Mario from creeping to running. Readers might be confused by this digital reference as though it's digital in function. "

I was indeed confused by this verbiage.

are all "analog" controls not essentially "digital?" πŸ€” analog in the sense that it is not simply "on or off," but digital in the sense that they operate with ones and zeroes.

Re: System Shock 2.1 Update Brings Massive Improvements To Performance

@lifer

yeah, IIRC they republish and amend old reviews for NSO games, for example. they'll even have a statement at the top, something like "this is a repost of our 2015 review for Wii U Virtual Console. We have amended it for such n such reasons, to reflect yada yada whatever.

OTOH, I think Ollie and others have a good point: release it right the first time if you want a good review. πŸ‘

Re: Investor Who Urged Nintendo To Monetise Mario's Jumps Acquires Shares In Kadokawa

-wc-

@jsty3105

I see the term "anti consumer" used all the time on here, and usually it's not really justified, as you say.

What I will say is this: I've been using the other guy's hybrid handheld system, and comparatively it has been such a consumer friendly experience that it has only put some of the BS we put up with on Switch in even heavier relief.

for example: I had a bad run of game purchases recently, like 4 games in a row that I didnt really like and wished I hadnt spent the money. I requested refunds on all four, and got my money back the very next morning! one of them was even a week beyond the return window (which is two weeks or two hours of gameplay, whichever comes first)

AFAIK, there are zero returns on Switch eshop, for any reason (plz correct me if I'm wrong,) and you can't even "disown" games you regret purchasing without refund. you cant even take demos off your "redownload" list!

another example is that the USB C port on Switch is nerfed. I'm kind of a luddite so I didnt realize it before, but here I am hooking up portable monitors, usb multitaps, whatever dock I want, whatever power supply i want and generally any laptop accessory ive tried has "just worked" with my new setup. not to mention, I can easily open it up, replace the internal storage, upgrade the battery if I wanted to, etc etc.

anyway, point being that if they arent ANTI consumer, they certainly are less consumer friendly than some of their competition ✌️

Re: Investor Who Urged Nintendo To Monetise Mario's Jumps Acquires Shares In Kadokawa

@UltimateOtaku91

I have plenty of issues with Nintendo's business practices, but I actually agree with you about this one for the most part. More accurately, I can see both sides of this one.

but yeah, I remember when the first games came out, the idea was you picked one and maybe your friend picked the other. Completionism didn't feel so compulsory in gaming yet, to me (though the slogan "gotta catch em all" was certainly suggesting it!)

I think it can be both: Nintendo's intentions were that people would collaborate to catch em all, but they dont mind the extra money from the double dippers either, and they arent going to stop it now πŸ‘

Re: Investor Who Urged Nintendo To Monetise Mario's Jumps Acquires Shares In Kadokawa

-wc-

@jsty3105

you're probably right. btw I was indeed thinking of the recent 20 dollar GBA Pokemon ROMs announcement, it seems you've read my mind πŸ˜…πŸ‘

I have definitely seen the argument made that the two color/cart model of pokemon is "anti consumer," and while I find that language possibly a bit hyperbolic, I do think they have at least a bit of a point. "Gotta catch em all" is pretty close to "gotta buy two copies," depending on your situation.

Anyway I don't know why I do this to myself! trying to keep things interesting around here. thanks for your thoughtful reply as always ✌️

Re: Review: 8BitDo 64 Controller For Switch 1 & 2 - A Worthy Alternative To Nintendo's N64 Pad

-wc-

"The original N64 pad used a spindly, digital(?) joystick"

I'm sorry, I can't help myself.

I love my 8bitdo 64 controller! I agree with Ollie, that the right trigger should be R instead of another Z, as pulling Z with the right hand is never called for without the possibility of doing the "crossover grip" option of the three pronged OG. I have the same issue with the little two handled Hori 64 pads that everyone else seems to like.

Ok, now do a Gamecube one!! πŸ˜ƒ

@Scollurio

lol sure, but it still has zero to do with "innocent until proven guilty" πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

just like Twitter banning Nazi propaganda had zero to do with "freedom of speech."

im over the outrage too but everyone is still entitled to their personal opinion. and, unfortunately just saying "these costumes look horrible" doesn't register a blip with the people responsible.

Re: Review: Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! (Switch 2) - Kill Or Be Killed In This Gloriously Entertaining Boomer Shooter

-wc-

@NeonPizza

"Retro FPS" would actually be an accurate description though itll never stick because it is an accurate usage of the term "retro" and gamers hate that for some reason.

The people here saying they are called Boomer Shooters because "things go boom in them" are really grasping at straws.

That being said, I'm off to play some Boomer Gear Solid, Boomerpunk 2077, and of course, Boomerman.

PS - John Carmack is 55, very much not a boomer.

PPS - I completely memory holed Killing Time but that was definitely among the many "edgy" PC games I would peruse at the mall and dream of having a computer powerful enough to play, and a mother who would allow it πŸ˜† onto the wishlist it goes! πŸ‘

Re: Cult Classic 'The 7th Guest' Is Getting A Full Remake On The Switch

-wc-

@Polvasti

i was speaking about the Switch 2 era, not about this game coming to Switch 2 per se. I see how my wording sucks, though. ✌️

I don't have specific examples to present to you right now as evidence, and if you disagree, that's fine. I've been pointing it out along the way.

This is a port of a 6/10 (according to pushsquare) PlayStation game, and according to the body of the article, came out multiple years ago. yet, the headline reads

"Cult Classic 'The 7th Guest' Is Getting A Full Remake On The Switch"

if you don't agree that that is a misleading headline, that's okay. it's not the first I've noticed lately by a long shot, and ive been following this site long enough to detect the change. You can still see the more balanced style of writing on TimeExtension.

to be fair, the staff has almost completely turned over here in the last couple years, so some changes must be expected. βœŒοΈπŸ‘

Re: Cult Classic 'The 7th Guest' Is Getting A Full Remake On The Switch

-wc-

@neil9000

I'm glad I'm not the only one ✌️β™₯️

Speaking for myself, I'm noticing a lot more of a "Switch 2 vacuum" than I did in the switch 1 era on Nintendolife in particular, where headlines and terms are tweaked to make things seem more special/exclusive to Switch 2 than they really are.

Where there was palpable joy and celebration in the prior generation there tends to be something like desperation, equivocation, and toxic optimism now. As a Nintendo fan, this generation saddens me.

Re: ICYMI: Nintendo's Dishing Out Mario Galaxy Movie Digital Collectible Cards

"These digital collectibles can be picked up every day by simply logging into the app and heading to the relevant section on the home screen. There are 40 to collect in total, and you've got until 1st June to nab 'em all.

In fact, if you collect as many as three cards by 31st May, you'll be rewarded with 100 My Nintendo Platinum Points"

shouldnt this feature be rated PEGI 18, then? πŸ€”

@Blast16

" if every N game had a demo I would likely buy more of their games"

see, I think I'd have purchased fewer πŸ˜‚βœŒοΈor maybe more optimistically, "differently."

im with you, though. 40 bucks feels like a lot for me, these days, for one game.

80... is right out! (where's the holy hand grenade emoji?!)
