I had my first eyeful of Ollie's "bum gravy" about a week ago, and I had to comment as well ๐ I figured it was a UK thing but I guess it's just an Ollie thing!

"The game looks like it is taking more notes from stuff like Hollow Knight and going moreso for that 2D souls gameplay rather than really going for the Castlevania style."
Have you played Dead Cells, another game made by this developer?
"Y'know, I'm the only person here who believes SF26 will age worse visually than the original did."
well, that makes two of us. โ๏ธ but yeah, I know that lol.
I played Starfox 2026 at a friends house, on a huge OLED tv, and it was just... blah. boring cutscenes, bland 'modern" graphics with less legibility than the original by far, and beyond boring gameplay that literally felt like "going through the motions." we were all gathered together, excited, and intended to beat it that evening but we got about 3 levels in and put it down.
If you've never played a Starfox game, you might pick this one up, but without the historical context or charm of the low poly graphics, I feel like it will "hit" like a standard modern game, albeit a short one with relatively simple gameplay.
personally I think you'd be better off enriching yourself with the classics first. ๐
(JUST MY OPINION everyone, in case anyone is taking my comments as some kind of "untrue facts" lol.)
serious question, do you all generally believe that remakes age better than original classics?
do you think people will be more interested in talking about "STARFOX 2026" or the SNES/64 games in 10 years? how about Ocarina? do you anticipate that it'll be a classic that stands alongside the original, or remembered as a footnote mostly for the way that it contrasts with the first game?
do you think we will look back in 15, 20 years, and say, "thank god we remade Starfox and Ocarina, because in 2026, videogames were finally "good," and we have these remakes to play instead of the original, inferior games?"
do you believe we will even still be talking about these remakes in 2028? are they truly a simple stopgap to keep the money flowing until they come up with some good ideas for theoretical future games, as some nominally pro-remake people have articulated here?
I like to think about the classic original Metal Gear Solid trilogy. part of what made those games "cinematic" was that the player/viewer was not in control of the camera, so as you run around you would get essentially cuts to wide angles, dutch angles, closeups, sweeping panoramas, etc etc. Newer games which are actively TRYING to seem "movie like" cant really do it, because the camera is under absolute control by the player, which ruins any possibility of artistic "photography" so to speak and is completely unlike the experience of watching any movie.
I feel like with modern games I'm playing camera as much as im playing a videogame, sort of "riding" the right analogue the whole time. consequently they all sort of play the same, regardless of how complex the controls and systems are, or even whether they are in 3rd person or first person.
I'm sorry. I dont see how your response correlates to my original comment, then. but no worries! โ๏ธ
fwiw, I agree that not every game has "aged well" in the sense that some were deeply flawed from the beginning. ๐ but I also think that if we are going to pick from flawed games then in the context of this convo they should be games that are either getting remakes, gotten remade, or we think are worthy of getting remade, or else what are we talking about here?
Nintendo may or may not have invented the remake with all stars (I'd argue it was a remaster,) but to be fair that was also a compilation of some of the best games ever made, for the price of one game. kind of a different beast than just selling the same game again only "better."
(i also am straining to pick up on the relevance of All Stars or "who invented the remake" to this conversation to be frank.)
YES! if you are going to remaster a game, why not SSB and Melee?
And a new F zero for cryin out loud! Some part of me will never give up on that one though I doubt they can even make a game like X again. they don't seem to have it in them, sadly.
I totally injured myself trying to "do good" in ring fit adventure on switch and now i don't mess around with these kinds of games. user error, but I feel like games just kinda put me in a headspace of sacrificing self to win, which is fine as long as I'm not likely to sustain an injury.
this might not flip the entire equation, but wages haven't kept up with inflation, so you've missed a large part of the story.
second point: the fact that Switch 2 is cheaper than an XBOX doesn't make it any more affordable in amd of itself. a parent doesn't need to price compare with the competition of the kid is asking for a Nintendo and 500 is already out of budget. bottom line: people arent imagining that they've been priced out of mainstream gaming.
