Re: Square Enix Wants To Further Promote Its Multi-Platform Strategy, Especially On Switch 2

-wc-

I don't recognize my favorite pub/dev of the PSX era. I personally think they were at their best when they focused primarily on one platform, be it SNES or Playstation.

PS if you don't like all the comments about game keycards, blame the company that created them not the fans that just want to buy and enjoy their games.

PPS - if you REALLY don't like them, start hitting the ignore button on every GKC complaint you see. before long, you will see none.

OR, accept that the other users are actual humans with their own priorities and motivations, and not simply objects for your online amusement.

@RadioHedgeFund

"It’s like when people complain about the Mario movies also having a paper thin story. They’re not adapting War and Peace here."

They have no excuse when they had the Paper Mario/SMRPG games as precedent. The popular idea that they couldn't have done better is sad for Nintendo and the fandom.

@HalBailman

I have 100% all fzero games* (besides 99 of course but I don't count that one) and I think they are all three absolutely perfect! every track, every race is an absolute screamer 😂

Now that I think about it though, I agree though that X would benefit more than GX! But I'm still generally against remakes, especially of games I consider already perfect 😁

EDIT - *not the handheld ones either

Re: Nintendo To Counter Switch 2's Global Price Hikes With Robust Software Lineup

@HalBailman

I get what you mean! It does imply some degree of severity, and I think where we diverge is over that subjective term. In my mind, 10% all at once is a hike, because a gradual price increase would be, say, 1% each month over a span of 10 months.

Anyway! I'm always glad to talk about words 🤗 And, specifically the concept of word fatigue. I've come dangerously close to making a forum post on the topic many times, but I'm trying to be a little less "on brand" lately. failing today obvs, but lately yeah.

@jsty3105

Thanks for being down to explore, you obviously don't have to prove anything to me and I just enjoy kind of stress testing different ideas, including/especially my own 🙂👍

FWIW - I know the Machine doesnt replace the Deck, what I meant by "effectively" was that you cant buy a steamdeck right now, Valve isnt talking about the steam deck OR a Steamdeck 2 right now, and they ARE talking about an upcoming home console release in lieu of a handheld.

OTOH i agree that at this point the Machine won't be able to come in at an MSRP low enough to really be anything but a niche product, which is unfortunate because I want one but I'm not spending 700+. I feel very lucky to have gotten my Steamdeck when they were 320.00, right before they disappeared completely. ✌️

I would argue that the growth potential in the handheld space doesn't at all negate the growth potential that I can see in the "not outrageously priced home console" space. We are in an era of austerity and it seems that that is causing a fearfully conservative and unimaginative sort of group-think in the fandom (not pointing that at you, just a general observation,) but I truly dont believe that somehow nobody wants a ~299.99 dollar home console anymore.

Re: Nintendo To Counter Switch 2's Global Price Hikes With Robust Software Lineup

-wc-

@HalBailman

"Please, I'm tired of the word "hike". Not everything is a hike regarding prices. I don't regard approximately 10% in most territories as a "hike". "

I get word fatigue, too, and I don't always have a reason (everyone seems to be constructing "sentences" out of fragments, ending with the word "right?" right now. ever noticed that? also, the words "genuinely" and "quietly" are VERY overused at the moment.)

OTOH, a "10% price hike" is totally a thing. 👍 10% is not negligible. if you raise taxes 10% for example, that's a significant "hike" according to anybody.

Re: Nintendo To Counter Switch 2's Global Price Hikes With Robust Software Lineup

@jsty3105

"largely I think it's a poor idea because developers would have to factor an additional SKU in their development (so touchscreen games are out of the question or touchscreen elements and there'd be like handheld mode, docked mode, and home console mode)."

I don't see why docked mode and "home console mode" would have to be different. also, SKUs are for them to worry about, we are consumers.

FWIW touchscreen mode was largely ignored by developers, even Nintendo AFAIK, even for games that would've greatly benefitted, to the extent that I believe most Switch gamers forgot about the feature entirely. It is now happening, as easily predicted, to the Switch 2's "mouse mode" (which I can't decide if I'm calling "side mousin'" or "mouse talkin'")

Switch Lite dropped the IR sensor and no one even noticed. Switch Lite also lacks two hand motion controls but who's counting.

"In a time when resources are scarce and production lines have more limited capacity - allocating time, marketing, development costs, and production costs to an SKU that's of limited appeal may not be the best use of time and money."

OK, then how about a poll? have they even tried to find out if people would be interested in a more traditional (and traditionally priced) simplified home console Nintendo? like the good ol days?

"The Switch Lite appeal is already proven. The appeal of a TV-bound Switch isn't proven outside of what people say in forums - and there's a huge difference between what people say they will buy and what they will actually buy."

this new attitude that Nintendo can't afford to take ANY risks really bums me out, tbh.

"Also, to some extent, handheld gaming is where companies are pumping money into now"

what? you mean the ASUS XBOX ROG ALLY X? or the steam deck which has been effectively replaced by the upcoming home/TV only version, the Steam Machine? Or the PS handheld that requires a running PS5 home console to operate?

Re: Nintendo To Counter Switch 2's Global Price Hikes With Robust Software Lineup

-wc-

@jsty3105

"I'd argue the Switch Lite still fits in with the overall sales point where the console fits in with your lifestyle. "

ask me how videogames fit into my lifestyle. 👂

"A home console bound version that's also bound to your TV doesn't fit in with any of the Switch messaging"

except that half that message is that you arent stuck playing handheld if you'd rather play on a tv. there are many Nintendo fans who prefer to play this way, and saddling them with the cost of the dock, screen, battery, and joycons out of some slavish "originalism" to the 2017 Switch marketing concept doesn't quite make sense to me.

Re: Nintendo To Counter Switch 2's Global Price Hikes With Robust Software Lineup

-wc-

"To overcome this potential price "barrier" for new players wanting to join the growing Switch 2 community, Nintendo will simply offer more games."

So what was the plan to overcome the 450.00 potential price "barrier?" 🤔

generally speaking, corporations whining about cost is a really offputting practice, and I'm more than tired of it personally. Make the product you think people want, make it as good as you can, for the best price you can, and then promote the hell out of it and support it every way you can.

complaining about the cost is just embarrassing. they could've released the Switch 2 for 500 on launch day along with a new Zelda with dungeons, a new 3D Mario game, and a new Fzero game and never said the word "cost' even once, and this whole conversation wouldn't be happening. Just my opinion.

@rvcolem1

"Is 50 bucks really that much money? I am not a rich person but if 50 bucks (US) ruins you, you should probably save more in general"

50 bucks isnt that much, but 50 on top of 450 is. Especially if someone already found 450 a bad value for this console.

In other words not everyone who balked at the Switch 2's price did so because they simply couldn't afford it. 👍

Re: Analyst Predicts A "Silent" Year Ahead For Nintendo

-wc-

@Gryffin

I've had the same thought. After 7 or 8 years I really thought they'd have more in the tank for their new console, regardless of delay (I also seem to remember that they released it ahead of schedule because some accessory company leaked the S2? Is that right?)

Re: Analyst Predicts A "Silent" Year Ahead For Nintendo

-wc-

@LastFootnote

"I really do think headlines like this should replace “Analyst” with “Some Dude”, because really that’s about how accurate these predictions tend to be."

Very right! When I was a kid, I enjoyed looking back at my game mags from years past and finding the amusingly incorrect predictions, and woefully misguided hype. Hype about the 32X and Jaguar in particular gives me such a distinct flavor of nostalgia, to this day 😅 I also remember some VERY early "PSX2" rumors in probably GamePlayers or EGM that I wouldn't mind reading again if I could find them.

In fact, I value the conjecture and predictions from videogame journalists a lot more than any "analyst." I'd like to see more content like that, and less industry wonk rumor mill pasta, personally. 👍

"Switch 2 still isn’t ergonomic, but at least they fixed the wobbliness! As for “tabletop mode”, the Switch 2 screen is big enough that I actually use it quite a lot. Probably more than handled; the thing is just too heavy."

I'm very curious to try a Switch 2 in handheld, especially after using my Steamdeck for the last 6 months. like jumping from the hot tub, to the pool 😎 or maybe the opposite idk. Everyone hates it including myself a little bit when I talk about my Steamdeck on here, but suffice to say I am very into that hardware, and I see it as almost the polar opposite approach to modern Nintendo's (but in some ways more similar to the old Nintendo's. Approach.)

Except that they are both apparently heavy 😅 (I'm assuming the Steamdeck much moreso, in actual grams.)

FWIW I've played a bit of Switch 2 but only on someone else's upsettingly large TV, with a Pro Con 2.

I appreciate your input! 👍

PS - I'm genuinely glad they fixed the wobbliness. 🙂 any other company would have been skewered over the wobbliness.

Which is ironic because of all my vintage consoles and handhelds, the Nintendos are easily the least wobbly.

Re: Analyst Predicts A "Silent" Year Ahead For Nintendo

-wc-

@larryisaman

I've been saying exactly what you are saying about TV only switch since the Switch was first announced, in fact I initially waited to see if one would be announced once I played a Switch and realized that it is an over-engineered, fragile handheld with poor controls and a creaky, wobbly, unergonomic design. They could have fixed literally all of its problems (and lowered the cost) simply by making it a dockable conventional handheld with reasonable ergonomics and robust controls, sans joycons.

(I suspect the # of Switch users who regularly use "desktop mode" or whatever is something like 1% and mostly children who wouldnt have suffered one single lick for never having it available.)

Long story short, COVID lockdown forced my hand and I bought a switch in 2020, which has been left docked 99% of the time since.

anyway I've seen you talk about this on here before, and I appreciate literally everything you've said about it. ✌️

Oh, lol 😅 of course. I didn't even notice the first time that you were the user that I initially replied to, sorry about that! (threaded comments would really be an improvement around here, but i digress..)

Well, I hope my explanation was helpful, then! it's a weird turn of phrase, I'd imagine, if you aren't used to seeing it.✌️

Re: Analyst Predicts A "Silent" Year Ahead For Nintendo

-wc-

@Haruki_NLI

its not even a turn of phrase. "silent" is not a relative term, period. nor is "boiling" fwiw 😆 water is either boiling, or it isn't.

it's like, "I'm relatively broke" vs "I have relatively zero dollars in my bank account." 😂

Re: Analyst Predicts A "Silent" Year Ahead For Nintendo

-wc-

@acNewUpdates

I don't think you've really thought this one through. respectfully. 👍

I think "plays Nintendo games" is the primary selling point of any Nintendo console. Being handheld is very important to some, not important at all to others. 👋

the "TV only" version would be cheaper (maybe much cheaper,) smaller, and simpler, so new major selling points are created from nothing right there.

if they include a Pro Controller and still manage to shave 100.00 or possibly even more off the price, then there's another major selling point for this model over the handheld one.

Re: Analyst Predicts A "Silent" Year Ahead For Nintendo

@Haruki_NLI

"How can you say it's getting caught on the wrong foot when EVERYTHING that's gone wrong for them is external and unpredictable."

AFAIK that's literally what "getting caught on the wrong foot" means. Things happen outside of your control that you didn't predict, and/or weren't prepared for. ✌️
