the hinge failed on mine and i never got a lite because it was very uncomfortable for me to use. i did eventually get a 2ds as a gift but ultimately i think i just dont care for two screens. ✌️
I guess everyone's experience is different ✌️ ive had almost zero issues installing and playing games within the "ecosystem," so long as they are "steamdeck approved" or whatever it is. i havent messed with proton at all, everything has "just worked."
even installing retrodeck was pretty straightforward, and for the most part all the emulators included have "just worked," but i will grant you that it isnt my first rodeo and a total newcomer to PC games mightve found it intimidating without a guide or something at least.
anyway yeah Nintendo consoles have their place. they were everything to me when Nintendo was still making the games that I wanted to see! ♥️ I am certainly not "anti Nintendo" in some sort of "console warrior" kind of way.
"PC would be more like a rocky road flavor and less like plain chocolate."
Yum! ☺️👍 I never ever thought I'd be "a PC gamer" per se but here we are!
it's still a "what-aboutism" though, a fallacy I see very commonly around here. GKC are fine bc "what about" code in box, or "what about" sony and Microsoft doing the same thing, or "what about" NAND memory which isn't exactly temporally durable either. ✌️
(not saying your comment was one dimensional like my examples either)
yeah, im not crazy about physical on Switch either. its a mostly "all digital" device for me, especially as i shifted from first party to indie games as the generation wore on. 👍
I won't touch windows and I've was using/gaming on linux/steam since long before steamdeck, so I knew what I was getting into/was a good candidate for ownership I think.
I love GOG, btw! I don't have any issues using my GOG games in arch linux.
anyway, that's why they make chocolate ice cream, as they say! 👍
"or they just dont care and in the majority, most accept an all digital future across most media."
all digital IS the future, if humanity let alone gaming are going to survive for the long haul. There is a really strong argument for Physical in many ways, but the plastic has got to go ultimately. GKC are just "digital plastic" if you will, a half measure without most of the positives of either.
EDIT - for the record, I'm team FOSS + DRM free. and you can pry my legacy carts and discs from my cold dead hands. 😂✌️
"Yet people have been buying Xbox and PlayStation discs for years and they are literally no different to a GKC. You can still re sell a GKC. People make GKC as evil but happily ignore it with other consoles.
People really do need educating."
No need to educate me, professor. I abandoned Playstation around when they adopted the practice (i had other reasons but i was a big ps1+2 fan,) and had the same exact thing to say about it. And I won't touch Microsoft in the first place, for this and myriad other reasons. 👍
the fact is the GKC will outlive its salability, so it is no different that throwing plastic in the ocean. maybe we need to "educate" ourselves about what our consumption habits are doing to our planet and our bodies, eh? ✌️
"A-OK" implies that consumers actually really like/love GKC... obviously that isn't the case.*
counterpoint: we have a binary indicator, and thats buying/not buying. you express that you are NOT "a-ok" with it by not buying it. there isn't really an in between.
in any care, that's what I meant by A-OK, not that they are like, ecstatic over GKC 😆 ✌️
"Gamers have always been willing to accept the trade-offs of gaming portable, whether it be sacrifices in graphics or the drawbacks of cartridge manufacturing."
i get what you are saying, but this is kind of a new tradeoff that no one was asking for, and represents the worst of both worlds in my opinion: a digital game with physical waste. yes, you can resell it, but not after the servers are gone which is an inevitability in the full ess of time, as is the eternal afterlife of the plastic item and whatever manufacturing them every day is putting into our water, our air, and our bodies.
i agree, Wii U had a marketing problem but was a tremendous console. it deserved better! and, like I said my favorite (and many people's I reckon) Switch games ended up being reissued Wii U games, go figure...
Steamdeck is definitely more of a "hobbyist" level device, but after a slightly more janky initialization than I remember having for Switch (been a while, though..) I believe that it is almost on a par, IF you stuck to playing Steamdeck verified games downloaded through Steam. Those games tend to "just work."
OTOH the shop itself is a DREAM to use compared to the switch eShop, so I could see some "casual" players actually having an easier time obtaining and installing the games they actually want to play.
I certainly have gotten in there and tweaked things, and made it my own so to speak. It has themes and folders, and filters and you can rearrange your wishlist as you see fit, and purge titles from your library, all things I found myself wishing I could do on switch over the years. If theres something you dont like about how it looks or operates, you can probably change it!
most recently, I bought a 40 dollar (😵💫) 14" 16:10 portable LCD monitor, plugged it into the Steam deck's USB c and it just works, right off the steamdecks battery! 😱 i can use the deck as the controller in this config, it is actually kind of mind blowing how "open" the console is to being used however i want, with ordinary "laptop" type usb devices. a 10 dollar 4x usb hub becomes a multitap, a bluetooth mouse and keyboard i had laying around just work like they were made for it.
it is awesome 👍 anyway i hope you get what I mean: "pick up and play" and "just working" are relative terms that are also subjective depending on the user's desires ✌️
PS - i'm truly glad you are enjoying your S2, and trust if I join that club I'll be on here reporting on it! 😅👍
A) I've always owned and favored Nintendo consoles.
B) BOTW and MK8 were so great on Wii U, I just assumed the party would continue on Switch.
And it did... in the sense that I double dipped on some Wii U stuff. 👍 But I have not really been into the first party exclusive Nintendo games that I've played on Switch, no. 😕
I think I'm perceived as kind of a Nintendo hater but I'm actually a passionate fan with some distressing observations, and strong opinions about what's happening with Nintendo. ✌️
OK but to answer your question: I did enjoy some NSO for a while when some friends went on on a family plan for a year. it worked... but not as well as "real" emulation if you know what I'm sayin. And, I prefer the more personally curated approach of something like Virtual Console.
in the end, I ended up with a kind of disappointing library of first party games physically, and then a really good library of retro compilations and indie games, digitally. If it weren't for these, I wouldn't have put hundreds or thousands of hours in on Switch, but I did!
Switch ended up being a "transitional" generation for me, as it opened my eyes to indie games, and I will always remember and cherish it for that 👍
but I probably won't get a Switch 2 until:
1) a cheaper hardware revision, like a "lite" or a "machine" if you will
2) a Zelda game with dungeons et al, a followup to GX, a new Pilotwings, a new Kid Icarus, a new Golden Sun, a different approach to 2D Mario, or an excellent 3D mario. ✌️
i tried getting into their stuff during the Switch 1 era, and everything about them suggests "trash" from the draconian EULA and sign in requests/requirements, to the janky nature of their "AAA" games. Obv, I don't get it, it's not for me, my mileage actually varied, etc etc ✌️✌️
"cool why don’t you find a steamdeck website and go post there?"
Because conversations aren't supposed to be constant universal agreement. ✌️ it's wholesome and uncontroversial to share and hear from people who's experiences and opinions are not your own. 😊👍
i got SO lucky, getting a steamdeck LCD for 320 mere months before they all went away. Full fat ports, running at "Medium" settings smoothly or 30fps at high settings, yes please. getting games like Kingdom Come Deliverance for 6 bucks on a random sale, hell yes. Life is good!
Putting out a "full priced" janky port of an ancient game on a brand new system seems about par for the Switch platform. I can't wait to see what's next for Nintendo when they eventually move past this era!
EDIT - Between competitively priced handheld PCs like Steamdeck (RIP?) and the currently-developing "steam on arm" phenomenon, I suspect that many current Switch 1 users would actually be much better served on a handheld running Steam. If your tastes trend towards retro, indie, and legacy games, and the quality of Nintendo games has suffered over the last decade in your humble opinion, I would highly recommend trying one out. It likely will run games like Fallout 4 about as satisfactorily as Switch 2, possibly at a much more affordable price. And, in a manner of speaking, you won't have to "wait for Nintendo to make one."
ill do my best to explain my interpretation of your comment:
If they really were the greedy beasts people are calling them on the side recently. They would have sold the carts in sachets if five ... giving you doubles
"if they were really greedy, they would be more greedy"
why do you think it is dumb. It is sold out so there clearly ls a target group.
"people bought it, so its not a useless hunk of plastic"
If I misread, or overinterpreted your comment, I apologize. ✌️ obv im a bit angered by this thing, and imo for good reason.
to be clear, my opinion is that we should be beyond selling useless plastic for profit, without consideration for our environment or personal health and well being.
I can only speak for myself, but I find this product shocking in it's wastefulness, straight up inexcusable. Children will play with it for maybe 5 mins, adults will play with it less than that, and itll collect dust on a shelf. either way, into the ocean and into our ground water it eventually goes!
no amount of "fun" can possibly account for that. people need to get a grip, that is what I am saying.
and, this could've been a MUCH better product without the insane number of little carts 🙄
this thing deserves all the negativity it gets, and more. it's bad enough that their hardware doesnt last, their controllers are defective using deliberate planned obsolescence that they refuse to correct (even after class action lawsuits) and they are selling plastic boxes with plastic bits inside that DON'T contain the games.
I mean, I've been talking this same point for most of my life and it's only getting worse, so whatever, I guess! The amount of money worship and plastic praise flying around is enough to choke a thousand sea turtles, as they say.
"I don’t know why people insist to keep calling this game a port. This game released day and date with all the other systems. It was not ported."
Quoth the wiki:
"At the 2025 Tokyo Game Show, producer Masato Kumazawa revealed that a Nintendo Switch 2 version was not originally considered because the system had not been officially revealed yet. Following the team's acquisition of Switch 2 development kits, they tested the hardware by prototyping a port of Resident Evil Village (2021) which went smoothly.[21] The porting process went smoothly, giving the team confidence to attempt to bring the in-development Requiem to the system as well, which was met with similar success."
AFAIK, ports have less to do with release dates and more to do with adapting existing work to function on different hardware ✌️
"if they were really greedy, they would be more greedy"
is not a good argument. reminds me of the recent "If the president were a dictator, he would be more of a dictator" arguments the fascists tried to pull on us in my country, not so long ago.
"people bought it, so its not a useless hunk of plastic"
is definitely not a good argument.
the idea that this is an "ode to the physical" as Nintendo uses every tactic thinkable and even some new unthinkable ones to minimize the physical on their platform is laughable. 😂 not to mention, their over the top new 30th anniversary box set is a code in box! 🤣 (talk about a useless pile of plastic!)
we as a species and as individuals need to stop using plastic to the extent possible, if not to save our planet, then at least to save ourselves. This product is Nintendo's vote against that priority and "dumb" is about the mildest word you will get from me regarding that. 👍
anyway the only game in the series that I can imagine possibly benefitting from a graphical overhaul is the Dreamcast one, but I am completely skeptical of this entire "remaster" thing at this point. it almost never works. 👎
I finally got around to playing this game (on Steamdeck,) and... it's horrible 😆 compared to AC2 which I just played through (and had an absolute blast, start to finish) this game is one boring "war is hell" cutscene after another with some occasional brief dogfighting thrown in so they can feasibly call it a "game." 🙄
I hope you can see from my previous comments, dear reader, than I was pretty excited to finally try this, and had high hopes of enjoying it. Alas! Uninstalled ✌️
I highly recommend AC2 as a perfect example of golden era "arcade on console" bliss. 🥰 Namco was king of taking the raw arcade gameplay and deepening it into a satisfying console experience, without ruining it or simply adding bloat. see also: R4, Tekken 3, and Soul Blade among others ✌️
I am playing Steamdeck games with a pair of 8bd controllers (ultimate 2 and pro 3) with switching for analog/digital triggers, and it works so well I'm amazed that Nintendo didn't do this with the new joycons. what an easy win!
I can even play analog trigger games in "digital mode," and it just works! i can flip back and forth as I see fit and it never doesn't work.
I simply can't believe they didn't even add support of analog triggers, so that games could include the feature and Switch 2 users could use 3rd party controllers if they wanted to. They are truly the anti-choice games company. 👎 and they always sabotage their own consoles when it comes to playing entire popular genres of games.
i'd go one step further: the Switch is touted to have streamlined Nintendo's approach from a handheld + home console to just the hybrid handheld/console, so wouldn't it need to outsell the wii and the DS combined to be considered as big of a success as those?
by my count, they are still ~100 million consoles away from reaching that peak. ✌️
yes, I didn't mean to imply that this game in particular was more expensive on the Nintendo platform 👍 it's simply overpriced, across the board.
I agree that scope creep is a menace, but I realize now that I was using the term kind of poetically. while im sure that these overpriced, overproduced games suffer from scope creep in their development, I was kind of referring to the tendency for games to become more long winded, grandiose, and "cinematic" over time ✌️
case in point - I beat Ace Combat 2 the other day (a childhood favorite) and it motivated me again to try Ace Combat 7, a game that I bought 3/4 months ago when I first got my steamdeck, but hadnt really tried to get into.
anyhow, yada yada, the amount of idle "content" is WILD in AC7 compared to AC2! AC2 was: briefing, mission, debriefing/rewards, buy a new plane, repeat. about 2 minutes between ~10 minute missions.
AC7 practically FLIPPED this ratio! artsy cutscene with "war is hell" voiceover narration, followed by a "TV news cast," followed by a mission briefing, then a ~10m mission followed by a mandatory "in flight" radio conversation in formation, followed by another cutscene, debriefing, and on and on.
I didn't time it but I'll bet there was close to an hour of nonsense between the few missions i actually played. I started SKIPPING stuff and I'm a dogmatically religious non skipper(, Dottie.) Unfortunately you can't skip a lot of what they want to show you or else I would just do that and play through the missions. I uninstalled it again. 👎👎
bottom line: I can't and don't believe this is what other people actually want from their arcade dogfight games. 😮💨
"How about a NEW Fallout, Bethesda?! THAT I’d pay $60 for, for sure…"
it would sadly be more like 70 or 80 dollars, I'm afraid. 🙄
they are trying like hell to make 60 the new 40, and I'm not buying it but after seeing some of the fallacious arguments in support of Nintendo's hikes, I'm afraid it's going to work across the board.
PS - can you imagine paying full price for a NES game on Dreamcast?
switching to steam after being a Switch user for years has really opened my eyes. 😳 the "Nintendo Tax" is real, and it seems like Nintendo and other publishers on Switch are almost counting on their users being ignorant to what's happening elsewhere.
but yeah its not good, especially if they are going to turn around and blame "rising costs" for delays, games released in an incomplete state, microtransactions, 80 dollar new releases (and counting,) and lack of optimization. 👍
I'm stunned this game didn't already have mouse support on Switch 1. I find it just incredible that no one seemed to care about using a mouse for that entire lengthy generation, yet "side mousin'" is supposedly the big selling point for the switch 2, in terms of hardware innovations.
anyhoo! this is an arguably great game, but im being a little more protective of my time, and my dopamine regulation so I've put it down probably for good 👍
I think the best example I can think of is GOG. has anyone anywhere ever complained about GOG?
yet, they somehow stay in business. ✌️ idk!
I take your points and I think you are right. It is probably more useful to simply point out exactly what you don't like, DRM, high prices, whatever, and leave the phrase "anti consumer" out of it. ✌️
I think GKCs and the "new" virtual boy, the new pokemon special edition that still has code in box, and other recent monstrosities are all straight up "anti earth" environmental disasters and should be righteously regulated out of existence. am I anti consumer? 😆✌️
"I disagree that including Rayman 2 wouldn't have been such a stretch. If anything, Rayman 2 would also be a prime candidate for a collection of different ports just like this."
I feel the exact same way. 👍 if anything, limiting the scope of this project is one of the things they got right, in my esteem. this game is worth it and so is Rayman 2 (providing they got the emulation and music right...)
i actually potentially get it w Batman since the entire game is based in a license, and might include music from other games or movies and tv shows.
I do not get it here, and I suspect this is just Uni being completely out of touch with what users would want. especially since theyve already said they are "working on" making the OG music optional in settings.

this thing deserves all the negativity it gets, and more. it's bad enough that their hardware doesnt last, their controllers are defective using deliberate planned obsolescence that they refuse to correct (even after class action lawsuits) and they are selling plastic boxes with plastic bits inside that DON'T contain the games.
I mean, I've been talking this same point for most of my life and it's only getting worse, so whatever, I guess! The amount of money worship and plastic praise flying around is enough to choke a thousand sea turtles, as they say.
but what do we care? its NEATO! 😵💫
Re: Video: Resident Evil Requiem Side-By-Side Comparison (Switch 2 & PS5)
@Drewtheman
Re: Video: Resident Evil Requiem Side-By-Side Comparison (Switch 2 & PS5)
personally speaking, i think they are both ugly as sin.
Re: Gallery: Check Out These Close-Up Shots Of The Resident Evil Switch 2 Controller
couldnt they have left the (gigantic) switch 2 logo off this one in favor of the graphic, supposedly the main feature of this special controller?
I would only buy this if it were somehow cheaper than the normal one. and I'd buy an 8bitdo controller over that one.
Re: Pokémon-Themed Mini Game Boy Announced, Though It's Not What You Think
@romanista
(not that I actually called them greedy, but:)
thanks for asking 😊👍
Re: Pokémon-Themed Mini Game Boy Announced, Though It's Not What You Think
i think putting half the "songs" on a blue cart and half on a red cart wouldve been MUCH better in every way.
Feels like Nintendo is just dunking on their own fans, at this point. It has become so hard to defend this company, I just stopped.
This might be the dumbest thing I've seen Nintendo put out. and they did a talking flower recently.
Re: Yes, Ecco The Dolphin's Remaster Will Probably Make A Splash On Switch
"Ecco Complete" 😩
terrible title. it's called "Ecco the Dolphin."
and, this is just two games in the series. 🙄
anyway the only game in the series that I can imagine possibly benefitting from a graphical overhaul is the Dreamcast one, but I am completely skeptical of this entire "remaster" thing at this point. it almost never works. 👎
Re: Review: Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Deluxe Edition (Switch) - Returns For Another Pass With A Top-Flight Port
Re: Video: We've Played Fallout 4 On Switch 2 - Here's 12 Minutes Of Gameplay
@jsty3105
Re: Rumour: Sony Apparently Has Gran Turismo Running On Switch 2, Just Don't Expect To See It
@MrRom92
Re: Rumour: Sony Apparently Has Gran Turismo Running On Switch 2, Just Don't Expect To See It
@GamingGod
i'd go one step further: the Switch is touted to have streamlined Nintendo's approach from a handheld + home console to just the hybrid handheld/console, so wouldn't it need to outsell the wii and the DS combined to be considered as big of a success as those?
by my count, they are still ~100 million consoles away from reaching that peak. ✌️
Re: Video: We've Played Fallout 4 On Switch 2 - Here's 12 Minutes Of Gameplay
@jsty3105
yes, I didn't mean to imply that this game in particular was more expensive on the Nintendo platform 👍 it's simply overpriced, across the board.
Re: Video: We've Played Fallout 4 On Switch 2 - Here's 12 Minutes Of Gameplay
@ear_wig
Re: Video: We've Played Fallout 4 On Switch 2 - Here's 12 Minutes Of Gameplay
@Doomcrow
switching to steam after being a Switch user for years has really opened my eyes. 😳 the "Nintendo Tax" is real, and it seems like Nintendo and other publishers on Switch are almost counting on their users being ignorant to what's happening elsewhere.
Re: Video: We've Played Fallout 4 On Switch 2 - Here's 12 Minutes Of Gameplay
@jsty3105
"scope creep is such a cardinal sin"
i cant tell if you are being sarcastic 😂✌️
but yeah its not good, especially if they are going to turn around and blame "rising costs" for delays, games released in an incomplete state, microtransactions, 80 dollar new releases (and counting,) and lack of optimization. 👍
Re: Balatro's Back To Steal All Your Spare Time In New Switch 2 Version
@anoyonmus
"Switch 1 never had mouse support"
We are sorry, that is incorrect. ✌️
https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/1ijdnuz/mousesupported_switch_1_games_feb_2025_updating/
Re: Balatro's Back To Steal All Your Spare Time In New Switch 2 Version
I'm stunned this game didn't already have mouse support on Switch 1. I find it just incredible that no one seemed to care about using a mouse for that entire lengthy generation, yet "side mousin'" is supposedly the big selling point for the switch 2, in terms of hardware innovations.
anyhoo! this is an arguably great game, but im being a little more protective of my time, and my dopamine regulation so I've put it down probably for good 👍
Re: Video: We've Played Fallout 4 On Switch 2 - Here's 12 Minutes Of Gameplay
@jsty3105
In my estimation, "upward spiralling development costs" looks a lot like "scope creep"
they abandoned gameplay focus for "cinematics" and now we live in the Hell of their creation.
you might be right, but i think they are simply chasing easy money as most of these reissues seem to amount to diminishing returns.
Re: Video: We've Played Fallout 4 On Switch 2 - Here's 12 Minutes Of Gameplay
this is such an odd time in gaming.
Re: Fallout 4 Switch 2 Launch Trailer Gives Us A Better Glimpse At The Wasteland
@Olliemar28
makes sense! Thanks for clarifying 😊👍
Re: Fallout 4 Switch 2 Launch Trailer Gives Us A Better Glimpse At The Wasteland
"what might be the ultimate version of the post-apocalyptic RPG."
what have they done that would make it better than the PC version?
I see this thrown around a lot on this site but never backed up in any way except "it's portable!" as though handheld PCs are not a thing. ✌️
Re: Nintendo Seemingly Rules Out Virtual Console Revival, Says It Remains Focused On Offering Classics Via Switch Online
@jsty3105
that is all well said!

yeah, that's what's weird to me, too. i guess we will never know unless the decide to tell us!

@saanaito
good to know! I had wonder|d if there was an iPhone equivalent, thanks! ✌️
97 is hardly "late to the party" my friend! 😊✌️ you were, dare I say, "right in the pocket?"
Re: Mini Review: Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition (Switch) - Nicely Orchestrated But Misses A Key Note
@gojiguy
my experience with the Switch era in general: game gets a good review on here, no mention of input lag, I buy it based on that, has input lag 😔
honestly i thought it was my tv or my controllers, until I tried "the other guy's" hybrid handheld console with the same stuff. ✌️
Re: Mini Review: Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition (Switch) - Nicely Orchestrated But Misses A Key Note
@EarthboundBenjy
Re: Mini Review: Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition (Switch) - Nicely Orchestrated But Misses A Key Note
@Serpenterror
its sad that potential buyers can have a much better experience "stealing" the game.
not the same. better.
Re: Mini Review: Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition (Switch) - Nicely Orchestrated But Misses A Key Note
@canaryfarmer
i actually potentially get it w Batman since the entire game is based in a license, and might include music from other games or movies and tv shows.
I do not get it here, and I suspect this is just Uni being completely out of touch with what users would want. especially since theyve already said they are "working on" making the OG music optional in settings.
Re: Nintendo Music Update Adds Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins Album, Here's Every Song Included
if you are an android user, and a vgm fan, you owe it to yourself to check out ZXTUNE. 👍
