Re: Video: 10 Exciting Games Coming To Switch And Switch 2 In August 2026

@JC016

Well, no it is not an exaggeration. 😆 when MGS1 came out, I had never seen a game with near as many cutscenes, and definitely not even close to as good of cutscenes.

They are so entertaining and bizarre, you can't wait to see what happens in the next cutscene. That's my take.

They are also A LOT more movie like than most "cinematic" games, in a good way. And, I'm not a movie type game type person.

" If you don't mind me asking, what's wrong with 2.5D games?"

of course I don't mind!

It's not about 2.5d games (btw always hated that term but it's the one we've got) being bad, it's about Nintendo deciding at some point along the way that 2D artwork including sprites and pixel art are bad, and that everything should be rendered in the same lifeless, plastic looking full polygonal 3d.

the best "2.5D" presentations always used sprites anyhow. I truly miss the "crunchy pixel sprites on chunky polygonal backgrounds" era, a la Tomba and Xenogears!

I think it's a criminally under supported feature! couldve been a bigger part of the PC port scene on Switch. If Nintendo had licensed an 8bitdo mouse I think it'd have been a hit, and kind of "gotten the word out" about the function in general. certainly I'd have bought one, and if the support was good enough a desktop switch setup would be pretty cool

I definitely thought I was going to like this game but its kind of as you said: like a slot machine with a slot machine. it didn't work for me but a lot of people obviously like it!

Re: This Balatro-Meets-Slot-Machine Mash-Up Will Eat Our Spare Time On Switch Next Month

@AussieMcBucket

Yes, 'why shouldn't,' indeed!

This is why I call it "Upgrade Theatre," withholding features from the "lesser" console owners that easily could have been implemented, to the detriment of their own product. honestly, even if it wouldnt be so easy, still worth it for the good will and happiness of paying users.

(yes, I almost said the attach rate might be higher than pro cons but I suspect someone out there would find it preposterous and incendiary 😂 guess we'll see!)

Re: This Balatro-Meets-Slot-Machine Mash-Up Will Eat Our Spare Time On Switch Next Month

@AussieMcBucket

I'm saying, lack of mouse controls is a common problem in relevant Switch games, even though Switch had mouse support, I'm assuming, from day one. Therefore, the Switch 2 having "mouse mode" is not only kind of an underwhelming addition, but making mouse controls exclusive to Switch 2 is just sort of insulting to people playing the same game on Switch 1 without mouse controls even though that console fully supports it natively.

(As an aside, I'll bet the "attach rate" of USB mice in Switch owning homes approaches that of pro controllers)

"you’re just refusing to acknowledge that AI, when used responsibly and correctly, can help humans work quicker. "

we have been down this road before. "quicker" means fewer people expected to do more work, for less, and it never goes the other way for anyone but the owners, stakeholders, and proprietors.

"AI will change how we work, if you’re not understanding that then you’ll be the one who’s job will be replaced."

I'm not sure who you think will save their job simply by "understanding" the implications of AI, but someone please let me know when AI-centric furniture building, finishing, and installing is on the horizon.

@Shiryu

"I sure did, a life time ago: https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/snes/tactics_ogre_let_us_cling_together"

That is indeed a great game! though like with many games of type, I enjoy them a while and never get anywhere near the end before I become distracted and put it down indefinitely. Ah well! perhaps in retirement ye shall backlog.

btw, have there been any 10/10 srpgs or other strategy/tactics games in your opinion, since?

Valkyria Chronicles is a personal 10/10 though I don't consider it a "perfect" game. (and, I did finish that one 😆)

"When a game comes out that seems made for the next generation of hardware, that's a 10/10 to me right there. "Resident Evil 4" on Gamecube comes to mind, I would have given it 10/10 had I the chance to review it on release."

I appreciate the insight! Though as a primarily "retro" gamer, I feel like this definition essentially precludes any new games I've enjoyed in the last 15-20 years from 10/10 consideration, so that doesn't seem right to me.

Anyway, as we know reviews and particularly scores are subjective! I tend to get more hung up on words than numbers, anyway 😅✌️

"... might use "con if you do, con if you don't." on future reviews. :x"

I'll be watching for it 😁👍

thanks for the review and for playing along in the peanut gallery!

@Shiryu

'The one true definitive shmup, the 5 out 5, the 10/10, the alpha and omega one the genre?

It is not. "Truxton Extreme" is an extremely accomplished package, but it plays safe gameplay wise."

so, no sequel can ever get a 10/10 because it's "con if you do, con if you don't."

I'm just trying to follow along. ✌️

PS - i'm curious, have you ever given a 10/10? what game(s,) if so? thanks!

Re: Capcom's Goal Is To Release A Resident Evil Game Every Year

-wc-

how about make a game when you have a good new idea?

so tired of remakes. I never play them but the signal to noise ratio in trying to follow new games is getting insane.

I'd like to see a direct followup to Megaman 9 + 10. if Capcom is too busy REhashing old stuff they can give it to yacht club and have kaufman do the soundtrack 👍

@dew12333

You started us off saying "Dreamcast ruined the industry by putting looks before gameplay," and now we have moved on to "low sales turned the consumer against innovation(?)"

My best guess at what you mean is Playstation and Xbox are boring black boxes now because Dreamcast put a screen in the memory card. 🤔

not sure what your point is but blaming Dreamcast for the ills of the gaming industry is just a non starter, man. 👍

Re: Star Racer, Confirmed For Switch, Is The Closest We're Getting To A New F-Zero

@gazamataz

"the colour coded thing really does kill any enjoyment in Fast."

Thanks for saying so! I felt very alone in this opinion, but I do feel it strongly. It is 100% a distraction which is the opposite of what I want from a game like this (what I want is "flow.")

"I agree with most of your points but I did have a great time playing F-Zero 99 despite it playing differently to the snes one."

I enjoyed my brief time with fz99, but ultimately I reverted back to OGFZ as it's just a better game on every level. particularly the sense of speed, difficulty balance, and control feel. I also think the graphics just look better with the real Mode 7 and more consistent "texture," for lack of a better word. something to do with the pixel art I think.

"I buy all of the hover racing games and they are mostly very disappointing."

I dont buy every single one but I generally try them if I can and yes, I'm invariably disappointed at least a bit. There hasn't been one that I feel compelled to do TIME TRIALS and try to beat my own best time since GX, and that's been a very long time of course. on the upside, I'm quite good at GX now and I still manage to beat my old times on a regular basis somehow!

"This one looks like it’ll be fun for an hour or two."

I hope you are right! I plan to give this one a spin as well, with expectations essentially on the floor starting off.

let's try to check in again after we play it, eh? ✌️ thanks for the reply!

Re: Star Racer, Confirmed For Switch, Is The Closest We're Getting To A New F-Zero

-wc-

the "fast" games only look kind of like fzero, but they don't play the same at all. more like wipeout with an arbitrary color coding mechanic that has nothing to do with racing and completely sucks the joy out, for me.

that aero gpx game was a bore, totally lacked the tactile feel of a real fzero game and was not compelling to me in the slightest.

Fzero 99 is slow and floaty, if you go immediately from it to FZERO on a SNES there is no comparison. they did not get it right.

this game "star racer" looks a lot more like Hyperzone than Fzero, its really not even close.

I dont believe there is a developer in business that has the chops of EAD in 1998 or AV in 2003 to make a worthy followup to fzero GX, "spiritual" or otherwise, and that includes Nintendo and SEGA and all of their various studios.

Thanks JM! I didn't know about the demo, that gives me a good reason to turn on my Switch soon! You are always full of positive vibes and useful information 👍

Not enough people seem to talk about about pico 8! There is a surprising amount of quality on there, and it is reassuringly easy to get to the good stuff.

any "old school Nintendo fan" should be enjoying it, in my opinion ✌️

Re: Interview: "There's Clearly Some Castlevania And Final Fantasy In There" - Mina The Hollower Composer Talks Secrets & Inspiration

@JohnnyMind

are you liking RHG pretty well? I've been thinking of getting it, and it would be the first in the series for me, too. would be the first Switch game I've bought this year as well! Times have truly changed again. (even my relatively new Steamdeck already feels like a legacy device, fwiw!)

Thanks for asking back! I've been playing games on my RG cube XX almost exclusively for the last few weeks, mostly old stuff but with retroachievements which is new for me. Pretty neat! I am playing through FZero on SNES for the 100th time, but with achievements on it feels markedly different! I couldnt care less about achievements in modern games but they really can kind of add a little spice to the old faves!

I've also been playing Pico 8 on there, which is amazing! The nice controls, cozy comfy shape and 1:1 screen make this really seem like a "Pico Machine." also, the "Splore" app really scratches a particular itch for an old timer like me, who grew up on Galaxy of Games shareware compilations on PC. If you like digging hidden gems you would LOVE Pico 8! ✌️
