Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online Virtual Boy Game Ranked

@Banjo-

"I don't want to write "in my opinion" in every comment ๐Ÿ˜‚"

insisting on everyone else sorting facts from opinions is a hangup I just dont think existed before the internet. It's SO tiresome.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but:

You sort out fact from opinion. the speaker does not do it for you. if you think something might or might not be a fact, verify it if you need to. If you read an opinion, and you know it is one, you dont need that person to say "in my opinion" for it to be an opinion.

it's part of reading comprehension, and it is your responsibility. โœŒ๏ธโ™ฅ๏ธ

Re: Xbox Announces Next Generation Console, Will Play "Xbox And PC Games"

-wc-

@progx

"some of those titles are a bit of reach. Half-Life: Alyx requires VR hardware to play it. Also, I don't hear many console gamers complaining they can't play those games either. I doubt 90% of the Xbox and PlayStation faithful are pining to play those games stuck in PC land, let alone Switch and mobile device users."*

that might all be true, but really have nothing to do with the challenge presented:
"Name a single big game that console owners don't have access to?"

the point of my comment was that user's rhetorical non-question was not valid (and that the answers are out there, easily found.) there are many thousands of PC games that never came out on consoles, and I named at least one, without mentioning wow, et al๐Ÿ‘

"I've said this before, and I'll say it again, if consoles bomb then most of these people will be happy to play on Apple TV and/or Android TV. iOS and Android stand gain, we're still in the post-PC era."

youre probably right about this. I'm not concerned, my gaming habits have always been off-beat to say the least. and i have legacy hardware and backlog to last a lifetime. โœŒ๏ธ

-wc-

@IronMan30

"Non-Nintendo focused gaming sites don't differentiate between the PS and Xbox equivalent of GKC, so why do you insist on forcing this narrative with Switch 2?"

the narrative you speak of is drawing an actual distinction: a GKC is not the same as a copy of the game on a card.

why do you want to "force the narrative" that a game key card is the same as a physical release?

PS - who cares what PS and XBOX sites do? ๐Ÿค”

"I'm not saying it's right or wrong, good or bad. I'm just saying it's really silly to complain about it like it's a new fad."

i agree with this. it does bother me that every movie and tv show thumbnail on a given streaming platform for example is just a bunch of actors pulling faces or looking dour straight into the camera, but it communicates what i suppose most people are looking to see. ๐Ÿ‘โœŒ๏ธ

and, as you said, it's not new. but, for example, back in the day at blockbuster, a movie like Fargo stood out on the shelf specifically because it bucked the trend, and with a pleasing, artistic photograph that conveyed something about the movie besides "this is a movie with people in it." โœŒ๏ธ

well, it's all in good fun! (at least... I'm having fun ๐Ÿ˜†โœŒ๏ธ)

rest assured, if we were having an IRL in the round, I would definitely have the exact same reaction as I did, here. ๐Ÿ‘ though, I think in person, because there is a lot more non verbal communication happening, it's easier to gauge the "serious" level, going both directions.

cheers, everybody! I'm glad we all get on here to mix it up and share our thoughts regularly. ๐Ÿ˜ŠโœŒ๏ธ

"If you lined up the top 10 most important portraits ever painted by master artists, they would also be 90% similar."

I'm a bit stunned by this comment. The suggestion that master artists through all of history have about as much distinction between them as different Marvel movie posters is absolutely wild to me.โœŒ๏ธ

I cut and pasted "big game that console owners don't have access to" straight out of your comment, into Google:

Escape from Tarkov
Half-Life: Alyx
League of Legends
Lethal Company
Total War Series
Star Citizen
RuneScape
Black Mesa

the list goes on but this was at the top of the page without having to scroll. โœŒ๏ธ

@PALversusNTSC

I don't like "modern AAA" games anymore, anyway, including Nintendo, so buying a Steamdeck LCD on sale for 320 USD in October of last year was the best move I couldve possibly made.

My next "console" will likely be a dockable ARM based handheld, now that Steam on ARM is a thing and that device will also run all the emulators im interested in. console and "PC" are both dead, as far as I am concerned โœŒ๏ธ

"Forever gamers not wanting to understand Nintendo's marketing strategy from day one has been to position their products as premium and evergreen, always worth more than the competition. They will never, ever do discounts like Sony or especially Steam because it would run counter to their narrative of premium evergreen games."

nah, man, "Player's Choice" used to be a thing, and then they stopped doing that. you are wrong.

OTOH, "No decently smart person isn't going to take advantage of a fool and their cash," right? So Nintendo fans must be the fools, right? โœŒ๏ธ

thanks for clarifying! I'm not trying to bust your B's ๐Ÿ˜…โœŒ๏ธ

Mega Man 7! Cheers, I never see anyone else mention this one but I found it charming as Hell as a kid! especially since I played it right after X, and the contrast between the two was awesome.

I've always been curious about the MM GB games but I haven't really tried getting into them. I wonder if the blur of the OG screen helped with the choppiness at the time? Seems like I remember learning that the R type port on GB made use of the blur in some fashion. ๐Ÿค”

I took one look at 11 and said "Hell no," but I've heard since enough recommendations for it that I must assume there's some "there" there. So, I will check it out! ๐Ÿ‘ thanks for mentioning it as I had forgotten it existed tbh! ๐Ÿ˜‚

PS - what are your favorite MM games? mine are 3, 6, 7 (personal reasons lol) and X. special mention for X4, 9 and 10. โœŒ๏ธ im curious if ive missed anything really crucial in any of the many spinoffs over the years.

phat model had better controls and overall ergonomics. it was a dual screen SP, which was so cool to me at the time.

the hinge failed on mine and i never got a lite because it was very uncomfortable for me to use. i did eventually get a 2ds as a gift but ultimately i think i just dont care for two screens. โœŒ๏ธ

@progx

I guess everyone's experience is different โœŒ๏ธ ive had almost zero issues installing and playing games within the "ecosystem," so long as they are "steamdeck approved" or whatever it is. i havent messed with proton at all, everything has "just worked."

even installing retrodeck was pretty straightforward, and for the most part all the emulators included have "just worked," but i will grant you that it isnt my first rodeo and a total newcomer to PC games mightve found it intimidating without a guide or something at least.

anyway yeah Nintendo consoles have their place. they were everything to me when Nintendo was still making the games that I wanted to see! โ™ฅ๏ธ I am certainly not "anti Nintendo" in some sort of "console warrior" kind of way.

"PC would be more like a rocky road flavor and less like plain chocolate."

Re: UK Charts: Resident Evil Requiem Switch 2 Sales Comparable To Cyberpunk 2077

-wc-

@Duncanballs

you are right about that ๐Ÿ‘

it's still a "what-aboutism" though, a fallacy I see very commonly around here. GKC are fine bc "what about" code in box, or "what about" sony and Microsoft doing the same thing, or "what about" NAND memory which isn't exactly temporally durable either. โœŒ๏ธ

(not saying your comment was one dimensional like my examples either)

Re: UK Charts: Resident Evil Requiem Switch 2 Sales Comparable To Cyberpunk 2077

-wc-

@Duncanballs

"or they just dont care and in the majority, most accept an all digital future across most media."

all digital IS the future, if humanity let alone gaming are going to survive for the long haul. There is a really strong argument for Physical in many ways, but the plastic has got to go ultimately. GKC are just "digital plastic" if you will, a half measure without most of the positives of either.

EDIT - for the record, I'm team FOSS + DRM free. and you can pry my legacy carts and discs from my cold dead hands. ๐Ÿ˜‚โœŒ๏ธ

Re: UK Charts: Resident Evil Requiem Switch 2 Sales Comparable To Cyberpunk 2077

-wc-

@BaldB3lper78

"Yet people have been buying Xbox and PlayStation discs for years and they are literally no different to a GKC. You can still re sell a GKC. People make GKC as evil but happily ignore it with other consoles.

People really do need educating."

No need to educate me, professor. I abandoned Playstation around when they adopted the practice (i had other reasons but i was a big ps1+2 fan,) and had the same exact thing to say about it. And I won't touch Microsoft in the first place, for this and myriad other reasons. ๐Ÿ‘

the fact is the GKC will outlive its salability, so it is no different that throwing plastic in the ocean. maybe we need to "educate" ourselves about what our consumption habits are doing to our planet and our bodies, eh? โœŒ๏ธ

Re: UK Charts: Resident Evil Requiem Switch 2 Sales Comparable To Cyberpunk 2077

-wc-

@uncleMike

  • "A-OK" implies that consumers actually really like/love GKC... obviously that isn't the case.*

counterpoint: we have a binary indicator, and thats buying/not buying. you express that you are NOT "a-ok" with it by not buying it. there isn't really an in between.

in any care, that's what I meant by A-OK, not that they are like, ecstatic over GKC ๐Ÿ˜† โœŒ๏ธ

"Gamers have always been willing to accept the trade-offs of gaming portable, whether it be sacrifices in graphics or the drawbacks of cartridge manufacturing."

i get what you are saying, but this is kind of a new tradeoff that no one was asking for, and represents the worst of both worlds in my opinion: a digital game with physical waste. yes, you can resell it, but not after the servers are gone which is an inevitability in the full ess of time, as is the eternal afterlife of the plastic item and whatever manufacturing them every day is putting into our water, our air, and our bodies.

Re: UK Charts: Resident Evil Requiem Switch 2 Sales Comparable To Cyberpunk 2077

@gamering

"Most people are normal and will take the opportunity to buy games at a lower price than digital instead of yelling at a wall online."

respectfully, what you call "normal," I would call "common."

because what's "normal" about game cartridges that dont have the game on them? ๐Ÿค”

incidentally I see a lot of "wall yelling" about how GKC are fine and Nintendo is doing everything right, so. โœŒ๏ธ

Re: Review: Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition (Switch 2) - A Solid Port With Plenty Of Extra Content, And Bugs

-wc-

@molkom

i agree, Wii U had a marketing problem but was a tremendous console. it deserved better! and, like I said my favorite (and many people's I reckon) Switch games ended up being reissued Wii U games, go figure...

Steamdeck is definitely more of a "hobbyist" level device, but after a slightly more janky initialization than I remember having for Switch (been a while, though..) I believe that it is almost on a par, IF you stuck to playing Steamdeck verified games downloaded through Steam. Those games tend to "just work."

OTOH the shop itself is a DREAM to use compared to the switch eShop, so I could see some "casual" players actually having an easier time obtaining and installing the games they actually want to play.

I certainly have gotten in there and tweaked things, and made it my own so to speak. It has themes and folders, and filters and you can rearrange your wishlist as you see fit, and purge titles from your library, all things I found myself wishing I could do on switch over the years. If theres something you dont like about how it looks or operates, you can probably change it!

most recently, I bought a 40 dollar (๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ) 14" 16:10 portable LCD monitor, plugged it into the Steam deck's USB c and it just works, right off the steamdecks battery! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ i can use the deck as the controller in this config, it is actually kind of mind blowing how "open" the console is to being used however i want, with ordinary "laptop" type usb devices. a 10 dollar 4x usb hub becomes a multitap, a bluetooth mouse and keyboard i had laying around just work like they were made for it.

it is awesome ๐Ÿ‘ anyway i hope you get what I mean: "pick up and play" and "just working" are relative terms that are also subjective depending on the user's desires โœŒ๏ธ

PS - i'm truly glad you are enjoying your S2, and trust if I join that club I'll be on here reporting on it! ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ‘

Re: Review: Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition (Switch 2) - A Solid Port With Plenty Of Extra Content, And Bugs

-wc-

@molkom

thanks for asking!

I bought my Switch because:

A) I've always owned and favored Nintendo consoles.

B) BOTW and MK8 were so great on Wii U, I just assumed the party would continue on Switch.

And it did... in the sense that I double dipped on some Wii U stuff. ๐Ÿ‘ But I have not really been into the first party exclusive Nintendo games that I've played on Switch, no. ๐Ÿ˜•

I think I'm perceived as kind of a Nintendo hater but I'm actually a passionate fan with some distressing observations, and strong opinions about what's happening with Nintendo. โœŒ๏ธ

OK but to answer your question: I did enjoy some NSO for a while when some friends went on on a family plan for a year. it worked... but not as well as "real" emulation if you know what I'm sayin. And, I prefer the more personally curated approach of something like Virtual Console.

in the end, I ended up with a kind of disappointing library of first party games physically, and then a really good library of retro compilations and indie games, digitally. If it weren't for these, I wouldn't have put hundreds or thousands of hours in on Switch, but I did!

Switch ended up being a "transitional" generation for me, as it opened my eyes to indie games, and I will always remember and cherish it for that ๐Ÿ‘

but I probably won't get a Switch 2 until:

1) a cheaper hardware revision, like a "lite" or a "machine" if you will

2) a Zelda game with dungeons et al, a followup to GX, a new Pilotwings, a new Kid Icarus, a new Golden Sun, a different approach to 2D Mario, or an excellent 3D mario. โœŒ๏ธ
