Re: Best Super Mario Games Of All Time

"A rare numbered Mario sequel,"

almost a third of the games in this list are numbered sequels. πŸ€”

also mario run being in the list but Yoshi's Island (speaking of numbered sequels...) isn't? πŸ€”

EDIT - one year ago, I b*tched about the exact same thing πŸ˜‚ tradition!

Re: Mini Review: Minishoot' Adventures - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - Zelda Meets Twin-Stick Shooter Make A Lovely Pairing

-wc-

@Ooyah

"It feels as if the simple graphics were a design choice, rather than a trade-off of some kind. The game carries a kind of child-like joy, and the simple, cheery nature of the graphics kind of suits that."

I would have completely assumed that were it not for the passage I quoted from the review in my prior comment πŸ‘ nothing at all wrong with how the game looks, in my mind! and I would assume a game like this would run essentially perfectly on a console like the Switch 2. Or Switch 1. Or Gamecube lol.

(F zero GX ran at 60fps in 4 player split screen, so I consider at least consistent if not 60 fps a "no excuses" minimum 25 years later. call me crazy πŸ˜‚)

"I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, if you go for it!"

thanks! I will report back after I play, if I remember πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

'Its environmental design is basic with minimal textures, helping to ensure rock-solid performance with seamless navigation and practically zero frame drops."

1) I've never heard the term "textures" used when referring to sprite based games. We assume the writer intends to say "minimal detail." ✌️

2) is this the extent to which a dev must go to get truly smooth performance out of the Switch 2? it reminds me of the F zero X / Tobal no 1 days of trading texture mapped polys for 60fps.

there's a bit of "damning with faint praise" going on here, imo.

3) looks like a great game! totally up my alley, have added it to my Steam wishlist. πŸ‘ (here's hoping the Steamdeck can handle it πŸ˜‚πŸ€žπŸ€ž)

thanks for the review, not sure how i missed this one before! πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

@Rykdrew

@Rykdrew

thanks for sharing!

we have a similar history, kind of. I'm 40, and my grandpa brought home a NES around 1988. it was the first time I'd ever heard of "Nintendo" and Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros were the first two videogames I ever played. I was hooked!

I was 10 when SM64 came out, and the graphics and sound alone would've won me over. OTOH, i totally get your perspective, as I strongly prefer 2D mario over 3D, despite how much I love some of the 3D games!

I'm glad you are "catching up" as it were, and having a good time with it! I too enjoy all the different experiences and perspectives, and my hope in sharing here is always that someone else will enjoy mine and share theirs in return πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

Re: Talking Point: Are You Tired Of The Talking Flower Yet?

@Pillowpants

Thanks for asking! πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

I did play it when it came out. I dont like the transformations, like at all. I didn't like them in Yoshi's island when I was 10, either. in both cases, they seem completely forced and don't really add anything to the gameplay, in my opinion. I also thought the "real people" city was a huge mistake and not "weird" in a good way, more "weird" in a "what are they thinking?" kind of way.

I didn't have a Switch yet, and when I did get one a couple years in, my memory of playing Odyssey just wasnt positive enough to put down the cash. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's just not what I'm looking for in a Mario game (which is a focus on platforming, and a balanced, thoughtful and finite set of powerups used throughout the game in creative ways.)

My favorite 3D Mario games in order are 64, Galaxy 1+2, and 3D land/world. These are games that I started when new and immediately knew I would be 100%ing them.

I'm not so much a fan of sunshine, either, but they showed restraint not putting googly eyes on FLUDD, I'll give them that πŸ˜‚πŸ‘

Re: Talking Point: Are You Tired Of The Talking Flower Yet?

-wc-

@N00BiSH

feel free to disagree ✌️ what I'm saying is they are the same company that designed some of my favorite characters ever, and this one is not that.

fwiw there is no theoretical limit to how many lesser designs they can also produce. it's a big company lol πŸ‘

Re: Talking Point: Are You Tired Of The Talking Flower Yet?

-wc-

even as a small child i wouldve perceived this flower as cloying at best, patronizing at worst.

generally, the character design is below them. why not just call Toad "talking mushroom," or Mario "Plumber?"

Nintendo was better when they stuck with "family friendly" as opposed to "obviously just for children."

"I don't want to write "in my opinion" in every comment πŸ˜‚"

insisting on everyone else sorting facts from opinions is a hangup I just dont think existed before the internet. It's SO tiresome.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but:

You sort out fact from opinion. the speaker does not do it for you. if you think something might or might not be a fact, verify it if you need to. If you read an opinion, and you know it is one, you dont need that person to say "in my opinion" for it to be an opinion.

it's part of reading comprehension, and it is your responsibility. ✌️β™₯️

Re: Xbox Announces Next Generation Console, Will Play "Xbox And PC Games"

-wc-

@progx

"some of those titles are a bit of reach. Half-Life: Alyx requires VR hardware to play it. Also, I don't hear many console gamers complaining they can't play those games either. I doubt 90% of the Xbox and PlayStation faithful are pining to play those games stuck in PC land, let alone Switch and mobile device users."*

that might all be true, but really have nothing to do with the challenge presented:
"Name a single big game that console owners don't have access to?"

the point of my comment was that user's rhetorical non-question was not valid (and that the answers are out there, easily found.) there are many thousands of PC games that never came out on consoles, and I named at least one, without mentioning wow, et alπŸ‘

"I've said this before, and I'll say it again, if consoles bomb then most of these people will be happy to play on Apple TV and/or Android TV. iOS and Android stand gain, we're still in the post-PC era."

youre probably right about this. I'm not concerned, my gaming habits have always been off-beat to say the least. and i have legacy hardware and backlog to last a lifetime. ✌️

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting PokΓ©mon Pokopia?

-wc-

@IronMan30

"Non-Nintendo focused gaming sites don't differentiate between the PS and Xbox equivalent of GKC, so why do you insist on forcing this narrative with Switch 2?"

the narrative you speak of is drawing an actual distinction: a GKC is not the same as a copy of the game on a card.

why do you want to "force the narrative" that a game key card is the same as a physical release?

PS - who cares what PS and XBOX sites do? πŸ€”

@MamaSymphonia

"I'm not saying it's right or wrong, good or bad. I'm just saying it's really silly to complain about it like it's a new fad."

i agree with this. it does bother me that every movie and tv show thumbnail on a given streaming platform for example is just a bunch of actors pulling faces or looking dour straight into the camera, but it communicates what i suppose most people are looking to see. πŸ‘βœŒοΈ

and, as you said, it's not new. but, for example, back in the day at blockbuster, a movie like Fargo stood out on the shelf specifically because it bucked the trend, and with a pleasing, artistic photograph that conveyed something about the movie besides "this is a movie with people in it." ✌️

@AussieMcBucket

well, it's all in good fun! (at least... I'm having fun πŸ˜†βœŒοΈ)

rest assured, if we were having an IRL in the round, I would definitely have the exact same reaction as I did, here. πŸ‘ though, I think in person, because there is a lot more non verbal communication happening, it's easier to gauge the "serious" level, going both directions.

cheers, everybody! I'm glad we all get on here to mix it up and share our thoughts regularly. 😊✌️

"If you lined up the top 10 most important portraits ever painted by master artists, they would also be 90% similar."

I'm a bit stunned by this comment. The suggestion that master artists through all of history have about as much distinction between them as different Marvel movie posters is absolutely wild to me.✌️

EDIT - I googled it

"Name a single big game that console owners don't have access to?(sic)"

I cut and pasted "big game that console owners don't have access to" straight out of your comment, into Google:

Escape from Tarkov
Half-Life: Alyx
League of Legends
Lethal Company
Total War Series
Star Citizen
RuneScape
Black Mesa

the list goes on but this was at the top of the page without having to scroll. ✌️

Re: Xbox Announces Next Generation Console, Will Play "Xbox And PC Games"

-wc-

@PALversusNTSC

I don't like "modern AAA" games anymore, anyway, including Nintendo, so buying a Steamdeck LCD on sale for 320 USD in October of last year was the best move I couldve possibly made.

My next "console" will likely be a dockable ARM based handheld, now that Steam on ARM is a thing and that device will also run all the emulators im interested in. console and "PC" are both dead, as far as I am concerned ✌️

@Coalescence

"Forever gamers not wanting to understand Nintendo's marketing strategy from day one has been to position their products as premium and evergreen, always worth more than the competition. They will never, ever do discounts like Sony or especially Steam because it would run counter to their narrative of premium evergreen games."

nah, man, "Player's Choice" used to be a thing, and then they stopped doing that. you are wrong.

OTOH, "No decently smart person isn't going to take advantage of a fool and their cash," right? So Nintendo fans must be the fools, right? ✌️

"I know inflation is a thing, but games like Super Mario Maker 2 shouldn't cost $8 more today than they did in 2019. The games are just laying there at this point - let people with tighter economies enjoy them too."

I have actually been called derogatory names for using this argument on here. people are so strange! ✌️

@StewdaMegaManNerd

thanks for clarifying! I'm not trying to bust your B's πŸ˜…βœŒοΈ

Mega Man 7! Cheers, I never see anyone else mention this one but I found it charming as Hell as a kid! especially since I played it right after X, and the contrast between the two was awesome.

I've always been curious about the MM GB games but I haven't really tried getting into them. I wonder if the blur of the OG screen helped with the choppiness at the time? Seems like I remember learning that the R type port on GB made use of the blur in some fashion. πŸ€”

I took one look at 11 and said "Hell no," but I've heard since enough recommendations for it that I must assume there's some "there" there. So, I will check it out! πŸ‘ thanks for mentioning it as I had forgotten it existed tbh! πŸ˜‚
