Thanks! PS and XBOX haven't done anything i find interesting in decades now so I missed it.
I guess 70 for TOTK was only shocking in Nintendo world. Zelda was the one series I could imagine paying that much to play the new game, but TOTK cured me of that. Now, I will wait for a sale, always. ๐
"Yoshi is priced at what has become industry standard since 2020"
what games were 70 USD in 2020? it was widely believed that Nintendo was pushing the envelope with that price point for TOTK, which came out well after.
you're very welcome ๐ I hope you enjoy! please come back and let us know, if you think of it. โ๏ธ
fwiw I've been playing one puzzle a night on Mario's Picross for gameboy before going to sleep. generally, it's a bit hard to stay awake through the whole puzzle, but that's kind of the point. it's possibly the least stimulating videogame imaginable, in a good way. ๐ no graphics, no story, no action, no words. ๐
ultimately, i think you are right. the prices are what they are, and people have different perspectives when it comes to what they "mean."
otoh, if the physical games are more expensive than the digital, then you pay a premium for the physical, because that's what that word means. even if the games were 40 digital and 50 physical, that is a 10 dollar premium for physical.
personally, there was a brief time that i would have paid 70 dollars for a Nintendo game, and that time started when I bought TOTK and ended soon after, when I played it. 70 for a Yoshi game is ludicrous, in my personal opinion. But you know what they say about opinions. โ๏ธ
a higher price is called a "premium." that's not really arguable.
to the other point, since we dont have a baseline for this game, I don't really see how you can rationalize that paying the TOTK price for this Yoshi game physically isn't "a premium" compared to the 60 dollar eShop price.
Respectfully, 60 dollars for a game is not suddenly a discount price just because Nintendo has (quite recently) normalized 70 dollars per game for their fans.
the idea of not having a new (mainline) Mario game for your new console when it has been 8 years since the last one is just insane. Really, every Nintendo console should launch with a new Mario game packed in. I can't think of a more obvious easy win.
EDIT - thinking more on this... is SMW the ONLY time Nintendo launched a brand new console with a brand new mario game packed in on day one?
im glad to see from these comments that im not literally the only person on earth that dislikes RE4. I recently finally tried Mass Effect thinking I would love it, but quickly bounced for similar reasons.
(returned M.E., bought Cyberpunk 2077 on sale and I was happy as a clam all weekend ๐)
OTOH i also happen to like what everyone else calls "tank controls" which is actually just a way to describe normal player-centric movement (as opposed to "environment centric") with a fixed camera perspective. before analogue sticks, it was a way to offer fine 360ยฐ rotation/aiming without "snapping" to orthogonal directions and also to seperate rotating the character from walking forwards, something that is natural to people in 3D but somehow they cant handle in a fixed perspective.
to me "tank controls" would be a much better name for the way games like Battlezone, Katamari, or Virtual On play, but I'm in 4th stage digression mode, now. ๐ granpas tired.
EDIT - i just realized, a romhack for RE1 or 2 on PSX with "twin stick shooter" style controls might be awesome! not even sure if thats possible but in my mind it would work so well.
PS - i'm a "start at the beginning" guy meaning RE1 on psx. ๐ 100%.
It's one of the all time great puzzle games! about as basic as you could get (you could easily make picross puzzles with pencil and paper and it would be the same thing.)
essentially, the numbers tell you how many filled in squares are in each row or column, but not precisely where, and you use deduction to figure out where. the payoff is when you reach a tipping point and it becomes obvious where the remaining squares are on the board.
I would recommend trying a cheap version on sale, to see if you even like the puzzles, because this will be pretty much exactly the same but with Konami characters, and way more expensive. I'd say unless someone is a mega Konami fan and just cant WAIT to get their next Picross fix, 17.99 is way too high and this is a definite "wait for a sale." my 2 cents! โ๏ธ
I'm usually "that guy," lol. I have to agree. also the use of "cool" to end multiple sentences in a four sentence blurb, not great.

yeah, IIRC they republish and amend old reviews for NSO games, for example. they'll even have a statement at the top, something like "this is a repost of our 2015 review for Wii U Virtual Console. We have amended it for such n such reasons, to reflect yada yada whatever.
OTOH, I think Ollie and others have a good point: release it right the first time if you want a good review. ๐
I see the term "anti consumer" used all the time on here, and usually it's not really justified, as you say.
What I will say is this: I've been using the other guy's hybrid handheld system, and comparatively it has been such a consumer friendly experience that it has only put some of the BS we put up with on Switch in even heavier relief.
for example: I had a bad run of game purchases recently, like 4 games in a row that I didnt really like and wished I hadnt spent the money. I requested refunds on all four, and got my money back the very next morning! one of them was even a week beyond the return window (which is two weeks or two hours of gameplay, whichever comes first)
AFAIK, there are zero returns on Switch eshop, for any reason (plz correct me if I'm wrong,) and you can't even "disown" games you regret purchasing without refund. you cant even take demos off your "redownload" list!
another example is that the USB C port on Switch is nerfed. I'm kind of a luddite so I didnt realize it before, but here I am hooking up portable monitors, usb multitaps, whatever dock I want, whatever power supply i want and generally any laptop accessory ive tried has "just worked" with my new setup. not to mention, I can easily open it up, replace the internal storage, upgrade the battery if I wanted to, etc etc.
anyway, point being that if they arent ANTI consumer, they certainly are less consumer friendly than some of their competition โ๏ธ
I have plenty of issues with Nintendo's business practices, but I actually agree with you about this one for the most part. More accurately, I can see both sides of this one.
but yeah, I remember when the first games came out, the idea was you picked one and maybe your friend picked the other. Completionism didn't feel so compulsory in gaming yet, to me (though the slogan "gotta catch em all" was certainly suggesting it!)
I think it can be both: Nintendo's intentions were that people would collaborate to catch em all, but they dont mind the extra money from the double dippers either, and they arent going to stop it now ๐
you're probably right. btw I was indeed thinking of the recent 20 dollar GBA Pokemon ROMs announcement, it seems you've read my mind ๐ ๐
I have definitely seen the argument made that the two color/cart model of pokemon is "anti consumer," and while I find that language possibly a bit hyperbolic, I do think they have at least a bit of a point. "Gotta catch em all" is pretty close to "gotta buy two copies," depending on your situation.
Anyway I don't know why I do this to myself! trying to keep things interesting around here. thanks for your thoughtful reply as always โ๏ธ
...but somehow 10 fans would be here, calculating the MSRP of SMB on NES with inflation, telling me that I'm entitled for saying 99c for a higher jump is bad faith game design.

Re: Nintendo To Change Pricing For Digital & Physical Switch 2 Exclusives, Starting With Yoshi
"Nintendo does state that retailers can set their own prices for physical and digital games."
in the case of physical, is this really true? some big box store could've set a 59.99 or 64.99 price for TOTK, for example?
also who is the retailer that sets prices for digital games outside of the eShop?
Re: Nintendo To Change Pricing For Digital & Physical Switch 2 Exclusives, Starting With Yoshi
@jsty3105
"making digital games cheaper doesn't suddenly make physical games the premium option"
i know what you are trying to say but i do think that it literally does.
also, "cheaper" compared to what? $70 was already a "premium" in another manner of speaking.
Re: Nintendo To Change Pricing For Digital & Physical Switch 2 Exclusives, Starting With Yoshi
so they "lowered" this Yoshi game to the normal price that it shouldve already been, tops.
I can remember that just a couple years ago the apologists were saying that 70 for TOTK was hunky-dory because "it's Zelda."
get ready for 70 dollar eshop games and 80 dollar physical, and climbing.

cmon bruv. "back in the day"!?
that's 10 years ago.
how old are you!?
since when is 10 years not sufficiently "back in the day?"
the SNES and PS2 launches had 10 years between them.

yeah, IIRC they republish and amend old reviews for NSO games, for example. they'll even have a statement at the top, something like "this is a repost of our 2015 review for Wii U Virtual Console.

I would indeed hate it! ๐ ๐
...but somehow 10 fans would be here, calculating the MSRP of SMB on NES with inflation, telling me that I'm entitled for saying 99c for a higher jump is bad faith game design.
