Sony's PlayStation 4 has now sold more units than Nintendo's super-popular Wii, becoming the second best-selling home console of all time.

As you'll no doubt be aware, the Wii was a hugely successful release for Nintendo, going on to shift 101.63 million units in its lifetime alongside 920.96 million software sales. Gaming consoles don't regularly reach these mighty figures, but the PlayStation 4 has now sold 102.8 million units (as of 30th September 2019).

The news comes from Sony's second-quarter earnings report released today, where the company revealed it has sold 2.8 million PlayStation 4 consoles between July and September this year. The new lifetime total also overtakes the original PlayStation (102.4 million units), and is now only overshadowed by the PlayStation 2's total of 155.0 million.

Nintendo shouldn't feel too disheartened, though; the Game Boy and Nintendo DS systems are still ahead of the PS4 at present, with 118.69 million and 154.02 million unit sales respectively. The Nintendo Switch surpassed 36 million sales after around two and a half years on the market, with many more years of shelf time to come, we'd expect.
