I was afraid of this as well. OLED burn in is very common with games, because games tend to have static HUDs on the screen. Also, OLED screens usually aren't that bright, so a lot of people will turn up brightness making the situation worse.
There really is basically nothing new about it aside from external cosmetics. I'm shocked that the specs are basically the same. I was considering getting it as an upgrade, now I'm not so sure.
@TheFrenchiestFry I know, but prior to this, a lot of people were saying that the Switch "Pro" would get these demanding games natively and Switch/Lite would get the cloud versions. I saw so many people blindly assume that would happen.
So all that talk of the Switch Pro (now OLED model) getting graphically-demanding ports, natively, while the regular Switch gets the Cloud version was false? The OLED model will still get the Cloud versions?
@Ghost_of_Hasashi It's more a case of patent expiration, I believe. Though there may be ways around it, depending on how they implement a Switch card reader. Regardless, there already is a way to dump Switch games stored on a Switch SD card to PC, via a modded Switch.
@Whitestrider I think the frustration comes from the fact that this is a bad port of basically a 15 year old game, at least AoC is a new game. People wanted this collection to be the absolute best it possibly could be, because they don't have those old consoles lying around to play it anymore.
"Dynamic resolution sees some areas extremely pixelated" "Frame rate rarely hits its target in parts two or three" "Portable mode can get choppy and pixelated outside of the first game"
At the end of the day, gameplay is the most important thing to a game. So having a bunch of framerate issues affect the gameplay, especially a Ninja Gaiden game, where framerate is extremeley important for counters and timing, etc, is enough reasons to not buy the game for Switch.
@Whitestrider Well, I would say it actually is bad and not worth buying on Switch, since the game doesn't run well and is poorly optimised. Not a fault of the Switch, but the developers.
I just got it on Steam, and aside from it being locked to 60fps (fixable via mods) and having no actual graphics setting options, it's not that bad; it's just a very barebones port, but the actual game runs fine on PC.
All this stuff about specs, DLSS and exclusive games makes no sense, as this device won't have a long shelf life before being superceded by the actual Switch 2 in about 2 years. All this needs to be is a slight refresh, that adds 4K output and better screen, etc.
@SwitchForce "steam games are best played on M/K setup"
Not true at all. Firstly, most/all of the big AAA multiplat games on Steam have controller support.
The ones that don't, or are built specifically only for KB/M, can use the excellent Steam Input mapping utility, which is basically the best controller mapping utility of all time. When a game doesn't support controller, natively, you'll see a prompt like this:
And then you simply select a template best suited for it, of which the community have already provided 1000's of templates for:
Couple more images of the controller mapping utility:
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Those are literally the games featured in the videos that perform at 60fps even at lower TDP settings, and provide 2-3 hour battery life. People want these devices so they can play games like those on the go; where those games either aren't available on Switch or perform worse on Switch. Also, for PC gamers, these devices give them a way to play their PC games library on the go, instead of having to rebuy the games for Switch. And again, there objectively is no overheating situation with none of them. I have a GPD Win Max, so I know from experience how good these handheld PCs have gotten in recent years in regards to thermals, performance and battery life compared to older models like the GPD Win 2. With mobile x86 SoCs and APUs getting better every year, and with the market demand for handheld gaming, these handheld PCs are here to stay for the forseeable future.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi The videos alone literally prove most of what you said wrong. None of them overheat, and no, they are far more graphically capable than the Switch, even at lower TDP settings. Battery life depends on your TDP; at 15w, you're looking at 2 hours in a game like Red Dead Redemption 2 (720p 30fps).
That's cool. I remember making a photoshop concept art for "CS:DS" way back in 2004, and posting it on a Nintendo forum, and fantasizing about the possibility of it becoming real.
@anoyonmus Doki Doki wouldn't work as well on console, because a big part of the charm comes from looking at how the actual files on your computer are being corrupted by Monica.
The irony and hypocrisy is, the same Nintendo fan(boys)s who defend Nintendo every time they go after a non-profit fan game are the EXACT same people who bought Sonic Mania - a game which wouldn't have existed if it weren't for the exposure and feedback Christian got from the fan game scene.
I am a programmer, but am not getting, not because 'it's too much work', but because I think it will end up like Dreams, where after the first year or so, very few people support it, and it'll just be a bunch of junk meme games being made.
Won't happen, due to the drug and other adult references in the game and how the Magypsies were deemed transphobic.
I don't agree with the latter; I think the depiction of the Magypsies was done in a very positive way, and the other adult references could either be changed, or they could just rate it M or something.
@Tourtus It won't. If anything, hacking in console games is about to get even worse. Devices like the Cronus Zen make cheating and scripting in console multiplayer super easy, plug n' play and largely undetectable.
@Sszx09 Then you're implying something that I didn't. Point is, Nintendo fans should be thankful that their system is doing better in regards to less censorship compared to the other consoles, yet that vocal group still persists in the comments of Nintendo sites. It's contrary to being a fan of a platform; it's like you want your platform to have less games and to be less appealing to a market who wants to play such games on console. And again, I'm not talking about this (Larry) franchise in particular, but these types of fanservice'y/ bawdy games as a whole.
@Sszx09 We all know the history of the Larry games. I'm talking about the general response these sort of games get on Nintendo sites; it's always the same. You would think that Nintendo fans would be championing that their console has the least amount of censorship, and allows these games.
There's always a vocal group on every Nintendo site, who complains about these sort of games. It's going to lead to developers not bringing any sort of fanservice'y games to Switch.
@anoyonmus Why not? It would serve as perfect advertising for the upcoming Halo Infinite and persuade some Switch owners to consider buying the game/console.
Game Pass on Switch = people not buying multiplat 3rd party games on Switch ever again and Nintendo not making money from 3rd party sales. I don't see it happening. I would love to see Master Chief in Smash or something like that.
I generally enjoy most Kate Grey articles, but this one was on the weirder side. I'm scared that some day we're going to get another repeat of that old Kotaku article she did.
@Ralizah Yeah, I agree about the lack of consistancy. But unless I'm wrong, I think even those innocuous VNs and games ("Evenicle 2", "Bokuten: Why I Became An Angel", "Taimanin Asagi", "Hello, Good-bye") that were rejected on Steam weren't allowed on Switch, either. Some of them were also relisted on Steam.
@Ralizah Nintendo is only better than Xbox and PlayStation when it comes to censorship. Because Steam actually allows full-on porn and hentai games, with actual depiction of intercourse and gentitalia, etc. I think where Steam draws the line is at FMV/real depictions of porn and stuff that is borderline under-age (same with Nintendo).
But yeah, I don't think there is much of a solution to this issue, other than companies like Nutaku, etc, rising up on PC and becoming the go-to platform for true censorship-free gaming.
@Pod But everyone knows that today's Bethesda has expanded to mainstream consciousness and is very different to the niche company that they were, prior to 15+ years ago.
What is crazy is that the sequel to Skryim, one of the most popular and viral games in the past decade, won't be playable on a PlayStation or Nintendo console ever again (unless those consoles adopt Game Pass, which likely won't happen any time soon).
Probably the last Bethesda games that will ever come to a Nintendo platform. It's crazy to think the next Doom, Elders Scrolls, Fallout, etc, won't be playable on PlayStation/Switch.
Windows 10 now runs on Qualcomm's ARM chips, through x86 emulation. So I'd rather see Qualcomm make an ARM-based Windows gaming portable, than an Android portable.
@hakjie11 "but the question is does it have games we want?"
Well, it's a PC, so it will technically have a lot more games than a Switch; it will have PC exclusives, PC multiplats, Xbox Game Pass and all Xbox exclusives, and now even PlayStation exclusives, as Sony are starting to bring their games to PC.
If it's using a Ryzen 4500U or better SoC, it will be capable of high end emulation, meaning it will technically even be able to play some Switch games, via emulation.
This is the Aya Neo in action, which uses a Ryzen 4500U:
I don't see $399 happening. Nintendo's sweet spot has always been under $300. They tried to sell the Wii U at $350 and then lowered it by $50 a year later, when they realised it wasn't selling.
$399 is more for the hardcore gamer market, not the parent demographic that's buying Mario games and Animal Crossing in the 10's of millions for their kids.

Would be cool if someone made a Switch cart adapter, that uses Yuzu/Ryujinx to play Switch games on PC.

No, there are always going to be limits to what's permissible on console, especially a Nintendo console.
