@NEStalgia Etika himself created the design and the term, "Joycon Boyz" to refer to his fanbase. Joy-Cons also has a dash in the middle, and this wording doesn't, and the 2 halves of the Switch logo are spaced differently, so these were only barely scraping a breach of copyright.
I'm sure someone has already made this comment, but has Nintendo ever heard of the Streisand effect?
The more they try to censor people talking about "Free Melee" or whatever, the more attention it will get, and the louder and more extreme lengths people will go to make their voices heard.
@Kirby_Girl "The proportions are so wild combined with the baby faces"
There's literally loads of female models, especially from Asian countries, like Japan, China, South Korea, etc, but also Russia, and loads of European countries, with big breasts, thin waists and baby faces. That said, Anime faces are stylised and not photorealistic; hence the large eyes, almost non-existance nose, etc.
Get ready for Last of Us 2 to win GoTY, even though it's a pretty generic 3rd person action game, with a story that most of its fanbase seems to dislike
It looks okay, but very downgraded, as expected. If this is going to be like Doom on Switch, where it runs at like 25fps half the time, then count me out.
@Moistnado There are ways to circumvent children from hearing voice chat, especially now, since Nintendo Online is a paid service, which ostensibly means an adult with a credit card has paid control over it.
For example, in the Family Group settings, there could be an option, which disables voice chat for specific members of the family.
There are loads of ways to implement it correctly, instead of this lazy blanket wide approach - which, and I'm not joking, was literally put together by 65+ year old Nintendo executives, who have a boomer mentality towards online gaming and don't understand the Internet.
@Moistnado It is patronising. It's lke they're treating every online user like a child. There are ways they could protect young players from hearing voice chat, perhaps through a bank authentication system, or other means that only adults would have access to.
It's so bad, it's basically worse than 2001 Xbox Live and 2005 PSP to some extent. Hopefully it gets better, but there's no need to make excuses for or defend it.
@Moistnado Yeah, that's basically the logic behind it. They put voice chat on a phone, externally from the console, as a means to not have the Switch be natively associated with voice chat related obscenities, and keep their brand child-friendly, like you said.
However, that's incredibly patronising to adult Switch gamers, who just want to play online with their friends, and use native voice chat, without the need to jump through hoops.
The advert really highlights how ridiculous it looks to use a mobile phone to chat, instead of it being done through the system.
65 year old Japanese Nintendo exec: "If they want to use voice chat, they can use their phones. We have to make voice chat weird and confusing to protect the children."
Last I checked, Game Freak was not owned by Nintendo; they're independent. For example, they made Tembo the Elephant, a few years ago, and released it on PS4, XBO, PC, but not Wii U.
CS:GO on a deathmatch server is still my go to for immediate comfort and brainless fun. Phantasy Star Online 2 for when I want to socialise a bit and kill things.
The Dreamcast VMU even did the Wii U GamePad/GBA Connectivity thing before Nintendo. For example, you could look down at the VMU while playing Virtua Tennis and play a crude stick figure version of Tennis, without looking up at the TV.
@acNewUpdates Nintendo doesn't own ideas, but historically, almost every time Nintendo does something innovative and successful, Sony will be quick to copy and come out with their own version. Even the touch pad on the PS4 feels like somewhat of a response to the GamePad.
@NEStalgia Yeah, maybe streaming is a smarter idea for Nintendo than doing a "Pro" model. They could even use Gefore Now's servers to accomplish it. I mean, they do have a parnership with nVidia, afterall.
My first introduction was playing Tetris Attack back in 1996 or so (probably before Scott was born, lol). But it was the DS game, Planet Puzzle League, where I became truly addicted to it. PPL was like the perfect Panel de Pon game, because it worked so well with the DS stylus and touch screen.
@joey302 No, the Wii/Wii U/3DS shops shutting down can't really be used as an example here. Games for those systems can only be played on those systems alone; there was no unified architecture back then. And it probably doesn't make business sense for Nintendo to host games for retired/defunct consoles.
The Switch uses an ARM based architecture, which Nintendo and nVidia predict they will use for the next 20+ years. What that means is, the Switch games you buy digitally today, BotW, etc, will most likely still officially be hosted on Nintendo's servers for download 20 years from now and continue to work on future consoles.
You can't use past precedents, because prior to the PS4, XB One, Switch 8th generation, the console manufacturers were all using very different/non standard architectures, like PowerPC or the Cell. Nowadays, they're either using x86 or ARM, and those architectures will be around for the forseeable future, meaning backwards compatibility will remain a feature going forward for all consoles.
@Crono1973 On the Console side, you needn't worry about Digital stores shutting down: Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo aren't going anywhere, anytime soon. I would be more worried about my cartridge or disc succumbing to failure (which can happen with Switch cart contacts in particular) than these companies suddenly ceasing to exist.
And no, digital purchases since the 8th gen are no longer tied to consoles; it's all tied to accounts now.
And the Wii/Wii U/3DS shops shutting down can't really be used as an example either, because those games can only be played on those machines, and it probably didn't make business sense for Nintendo to host games for retired/defunct consoles.
But the Switch and onwards will all be backwards compatible, so Nintendo will still be hosting Switch games on their servers for the next 20+ years.
@joey302 In 15+ years time, consoles won't have physical media drives at all; everything will be digital or streaming in the future. And your physical collection today won't be usable on future systems. So you do have something to worry about: you will have to rebuy your entire physical game collection, digitally, if you ever want to play them on future consoles again.
And while it sucks when a digital game is delisted from a digital store; if you already own it digitally, you can still re-download it at any time.
In 20+ years, consoles will still be using the same architecture they used for this 8th generation (x86 and ARM), so backwards compatibility will remain, and today's current gen games will remain hosted on official servers for as long as they can be played on future systems.
Nintendo (and Sony) would lose too much money from 3rd party software sales if they put Game Pass on their platforms. Less people would buy 3rd party games on Switch, and they'd just use it as a device for Game Pass. So I don't see Game Pass coming to Nintendo (or Sony) platforms.
I don't think MS is playing around anymore. After the Bethesda acquisition and the growth of Game Pass, I don't think they will even bring games like Minecraft to PS5 and Switch 2 anymore (only via backwards compatibility, but we'll see).
Their goal is to bring their games to as many platforms as possible, but I don't think that will include closed platforms from Sony and Nintendo; intead I think they're more focused on supporting their Xbox consoles, PC and phones, smart TV and other less powerful devices (via xCloud streaming).
They need to find a way to make Metroid more organic and realistic. The formula of Samus' suit getting destroyed, and having to retrieve the scattered pieces of her suit is getting a little bit unrealistic and dumb. It's like, how does this exact same scenario keep happening to her, you know?
@FlaviusFire On paper, it's grim. But in execution, it's not. It's full of bubbly Anime tropes. Which I like, but not in the context of Zelda. It's like Twilight Princess, which promised to be a darker/grittier take on Zelda, but ended up being quite light and kiddy. TP is a great game, but didn't live up to the dark Zelda hopes conveyed in the E3 2004 trailer.
Well, there goes the darker, more serious tone I was hoping for. Didn't like Purah from Botw in the first place, as she was literally a 1000 year old Loli meme (but unironic), and now she seems even more annoying.
I hope they add characters from: Clash of Clans, Roblox, Garena Free Fire, League of Legends, PUBG and Candy Crush Saga next.
I mean, if it's all about popularity and millions of people playing, not whether the characters have any soul or personality, these are all viable candidates for games to consider next.
People used to say the Switch was the best portable emulation and RetroArch machine, better than an Android phone, etc. But that's not true anymore, as Nintendo are really clamping down on all Switch homebrew activity.
Imagine working on something for months, sacrificing time away from your family, and then Miyamoto comes in and upends the tea table. (And yes, I'm probably the 100'th person to type "upend" in the comments, and like everyone else, I only use that word when discussing Miyamoto, lol)
@EliteXeos It's not Nintendo in this case, but Japanese publishers of niche/fanservice'y games; they might not want to deal with the western backlash.
It's like the DOAX3 scenario; the original Xbox game sold quite well in the west, so there was a western market for DOAX3, but the game wasn't released in the west, largely due to backlash over fanservice games in recent years.
These games probably won't be on Nintendo consoles for much longer... Why? Because every time a game like this is mentioned on NintendoLife and other Nintendo websites, there's always a large number of people in the comments whining about how "problematic" it is. Developers/ publishers are going to see this and think the Nintendo fanbase as a whole doesn't want these games.
@penamiguel92 I too am very worried about Japanese games being exclusive to PS5. Sony is basically an American company now, and they will push censorship / western standards on to Japanese creators.
@Bizzyb Assuming Botw 2 comes out in 2022, that would make the Switch 5 years old, which is a good enough time to just release a Switch 2, imo.
I don't think a Switch Pro is a good idea; if they make exclusive games for it, it's going to be another New 3DS situation, where they splinter their own market.
