Wow, it's almost like the same drip feed of games from the Wii era all over again. Will this service even exist on Nintendo's next console? Remember back when we thought the Virtual Console on Wii was the future of how Nintendo would handle their retro games for the future, but it wasn't? Makes me not want to invest this service, because Nintendo will likely come up with a new terrible idea for retro games with their next console that replaces this, and repeats the cycle of drip feeding games all over again.
Lazy as a solution this would be, they should have just ported the Android versions, as is, to Switch, with a few new features. Then, ironically, the Switch version would have been the best one.
Those last 2 videos really highlight how bad the voice chat situation is, with them having their phone off to the side (wasting its battery) just to communicate.
The old version / Vita version looks stylistically so much better, and so much more evocative. The remasters look awful. Sometimes making everything HD and shiney just doesn't work. Not only that, but they're also full of bugs, especially with the rain effects. Sadly, the best way to play them will remain via obtaining the old PC/Android/6th gen console versions or via emulation.
One of the worst remasters ever made. The games just look ugly in Unreal Engine, and have lost so much of the visual / artistic style of the PS2 games. In some ways this is actually worse than Cyberpunk, because they're trying to replace the originals with these horrid remasters. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the Crowbcat video on this at least.
@sanderev "10% of the people actually rip their old games. And ONLY then is it legal."
10% is still a lot of people using emulation in a legal way, and still validates the reason for emulation to exist and act as a means of video game preservation.
Surprisingly the perfect choice in terms of voice! I'm sure some people will complain because they were expecting someone younger or a well known celebrity gamer, but it's not like Patrick Moore was really much of a gamer, either. So good choice, imo.
The 2004 Internet speculation around the "Nintendo Revolution" was a lot more interesting. I remember all the mock ups people did of what they thought the controller would look like.
I'm enjoying the game, but I really wish this had Wii pointer style aiming, via the Joycon, or at least right analog stick aiming. I think that would have made the game feel much smoother and more next gen.
I was hoping it would have been Sakurai, Iwata or Miyamoto, or someone whose inclusion might have been more significant or diverse in terms of humanoid skin tone, but I guess I was expecting too much from Smash.
"Back in the day, when GamesMaster was originally on TV, video games were still perceived as a thing that was predominantly for wee white guys"
Uh... GamesMaster in the 90's literally had loads of kids, contestants and guests who were not white. The kids in the audience were always quite diverse, and not just a bunch of white boys in the crowd. Did Rab not even watch the show back then?
The general rule of thumb with Japanese Switch 3rd party exclusives is, if Nintendo isn't funding them, they'll always come to PC. For example, Daemon X Machina, Bravely Default 2, Moon, Monster Hunter Rise and Stories 2, Deadly Premonition 2 and most likely No More Heroes 3 have come / will come to PC. But since Nintendo is funding this and own the IP to Astral Chain, you won't see them anywhere else (aside from emulating them on PC).
@Mando44646 Because statistically, the main game buying demographic for those consoles are the enthusiast market, who are buying them for themselves. Once the Switch 2 gets a Pokémon game, of course it's going to sell well, but I still have my doubts about it selling as well as the Switch 1. The Switch was a fresh idea in the console space and was exciting to see many established Nintendo portable exclusives make the jump to HD graphics, but I personally don't think the Switch 2 will be quite as exciting to the general public.
There's still the possibility of the Switch 2 failing to sell as many units as the Switch 1. If you look at Nintendo's past consoles sales history, Nintendo will introduce a new product, only for the subsequent product to sell worse. For example, the Wii U was a sales flop in comparision to the Wii, which it was a direct successor to. The 3DS, which sold well (74.5m), but still sold roughly half of the original DS (154m). And the NES sold more than the SNES, which sold more than the N64, which sold more than the GameCube.
With the Switch 2, if it's conceptually too similar to the Switch 1, it might confuse parents and not sell quite as well. You have to remember that most Switch console and 1st party IP sales come from parents buying them for their kids, and it could be a Wii U situation, where the parent doesn't undestand what the difference is, or why they need to buy a Switch 2 when they have a Switch 1 at home, etc. There's also the fact that when Switch 2 launches, there's going to be a lot more competing handhelds on the market, that will take some of the hardcore 3rd party game buying demographic away from the Switch.
So even an offline single player game, with fake cartoony gambling would be rated 18+? That's pretty crazy. There's a lot of E rated Nintendo games that would be 18+ if rated today, then.
I think this sort of tech will be used moreso in handheld PC's than in the Switch 2.
Not that it won't be used in the Switch 2, I just think Nintendo will underclock it heavily, like they did with the Switch 1. Also, you have to remember that Nintendo's main goal is to sell their hardware at profit, and their hardware is designed to service their 1st party games first and foremost, not 3rd party, so excessive power makes little sense to them.
I could see NVidia making a successor to the Shield Portable, that would technically compete against the Switch 2, and make extensive use of this tech.
@Inc "Perhaps they knew some cheeky chaps would speed run it and didn't want to cut anyone short."
Lol, no. Not even close. This was 2008 Nintendo, they barely even understood what speedrunning was back then. They didn't understand their own Smash Bros community, either (see: tripping).
@TheTinfoilTitan PSP sold 80–82 million units worldwide; a lot of people still know what it is in 2021, especially the average enthusiast reader of games websites.
@TheTinfoilTitan No, it's just a form factor that makes sense for any portable gaming device. Same way as how the Game Gear, PSP, Vita, etc, used this form factor.
I love watching the Game Theory episodes about DDLC. But the extended universe thing he has planned... I don't know... I worry that it might ruin the charm of the whole thing.
@NEStalgia They already have released the GPD Win 3:
And they're releasing a new GPD Win Max (more of a handheld laptop) this year, and there'll likely be a GPD Win 4 next year.
Main problem with all of these Chinese devices is they're mad expensive. Valve can afford to sell at / near loss, as they have Steam to fall back on; these small Chinese companies don't have the same luxury.
@sanderev It is, but Pokémon, at least to my knowledge, is to a lesser extent played competitively than Smash, Mario Kart, Splatoon, etc. But it's an issue to ALL online games, regardless. No need to have a semantics debate over it.
Would the sequel be Nintendo exclusive, though? Seems like the developers don't want the series to be Nintendo exclusive anymore. Maybe they will create a spin off or spiritual successor franchise, that's multiplat, instead?
@VoidofLight I feel like Persona 5 is the last time Persona will be PlayStation-exclusive. The franchise is big enough that Sega really needs to make it multi-platform, like Yakuza.
The playdate is not a serious gaming device, like Jeff Gerstmann said: it's basically a cool little executive toy you keep on your desk and play for a little bit here and there.
@VoidofLight True, but in today's day and age, with the range of gaming platforms we have now and with Sega managing Atlus, I find it hard to believe they would keep the games exclusive to Nintendo, unless Nintendo were money-hatting them for exclusivity. We'll have to wait and see, though; I could see this coming to Steam at the very minimum.
I don't think this game will remain Nintendo exclusive, but we'll see. Then again, they still haven't ported Persona 5 to other platforms yet, which is nuts.
People keep over-thinking everything Nintendo is going to do, just like with the Switch "Pro". Now people are thinking Switch 2 is coming next year, when in reality it won't be coming until the manufacturing costs are low enough that it can be sold at good profit, and that could take a few years, especially if they're adding DLSS Tensor cores in to a brand new Tegra that's never been seen before.
