Whether you prefer Ninja Gaiden Sigma over Ninja Gaiden Black, or 'vanilla' part two over its enhanced edition, or don’t really care either way and just wanna get on with slicing and dicing everything in your path, the prospect of enjoying Team Ninja’s legendary action series on Switch is a pretty tantalising one. Here is a trilogy of games that, for all their many idiosyncrasies and ageing elements, still possess the power to provide some seriously satisfying combat. All that these three old stalwarts really needed was a decent port job with a nice smooth frame rate and crisp, clear resolution, and they would have likely earned an instant recommendation from us. Unfortunately, at least on Nintendo’s hybrid console, Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection just ain’t what we were hoping for.

With pre-release press touting a Switch port that aims for 720p and 60fps — and Platinum Games’ similarly madcap Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 managing to pull this feat off on Nintendo's console — we had high hopes that the adventures of Ryu Hayabusa would arrive on Switch in fine form. However, outside of the older first entry in the series, what we’ve actually got here is a disappointing offering that can neither stick to its target resolution or its intended frame rate for large chunks of time. This is a surprisingly messy conversion, a "master" collection that does these golden oldies absolutely zero favours.
Let's try to remain positive for as long as possible, though. Getting stuck into the classic Ninja Gaiden Sigma, things do get off to a promising start with Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection and we had zero issues blasting through what is undoubtedly the finest entry in the series. Whether playing in docked or handheld modes, Ryu’s virgin adventure is a smooth ride on Switch – as it really should be given its age – and it’s still an absolute riot to return to all this time later. This really is Ninja Gaiden at its very best; a brutally tough but always fair challenge that demands you take the time to learn, approach every enemy with caution and utilise each and every one of your combos, special moves, items and Ninpo in order to survive.
At fourteen years of age, there are certainly aspects of this one that are well past their best, most notably a camera that can be a right old pain in the backside when jammed into a small area with multiple opponents. Beyond these expected issues, though, it’s amazing just how well this first outing holds up in 2021, and it’s a real joy of a thing to get to grips with in portable mode on Switch. Sigma may not be everyone's preferred version — and we fully understand why — but the underlying quality of the original game still manages to shine through and anyone who has yet to sample its delights is sure to be blown away by just how well it all still holds together.

Moving on to Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 and, well, in terms of gameplay there’s still plenty to enjoy with this more bombastic take on the franchise. It may not be anywhere near as difficult, as thoughtful or refined as its predecessor, it may drop the original's maze-y, secret-strewn levels in favour of pushing you through corridors full of rinse-and-repeat bad guys, but this sequel still absolutely manages to deliver when it comes to action and spectacle. Want to face off against a possessed Statue of Liberty, kick twenty shades out of a lycanthrope army or make the canals of Venice run red with your enemy’s blood? Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 has got your back and, for all the complaints about how it’s been watered down in this Sigma version, it’s still a bloody tough game on anything higher than normal difficulty.
The added decapitations and overcharged finishing moves that punctuate the action in this sequel give combat a totally different rhythm. This is a fundamentally easier game that allows you to take a moment as you pull off an obliteration technique or use a super-charged Ninpo to make some space in a crowd of enemies. There are far more opportunities to heal and save your progress, too and as a result this is an action game that's got replayability in spades; a completely OTT, boss-packed affair that wants you to come back again and again, improving your rankings and upping that difficulty as you go. This Master Collection also returns all the lovely blood and violence to proceedings via a Day One patch, so gore hounds can rejoice as they literally paint the town red instead of purple and green.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is also packed full of modes, with chapter challenges, ninja races and tag missions to keep players busy once they’re done with the roughly ten-hour-long campaign. In short, there’s plenty of lovely violent fun to be had here, or at least there would be if the whole thing wasn’t marred by incessant technical issues that drag the entire experience down.
Right from the get-go these issues rear their head with this Switch port of Sigma 2 and, in both docked and handheld modes, some pretty harsh dynamic resolution scaling sees the image quality drop seriously low as it attempts to keep the frame rate at an acceptable level – something it completely fails to achieve for the most part. We reckon for the vast majority of our time with Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 on Switch we were looking at a frame rate that was absolutely nowhere near the touted 60fps. We're no Digital Foundry, so we can't provide an exact figure, but the game just wasn’t managing to hit its target at all in combat, or indeed when just strolling around environments.

This technical inconsistency on Switch is a real shame, a messy experience that is perhaps the worst playthrough of this game we’ve had on any system we can remember. Its struggles don’t seem to have any rhyme or reason, either, with reasonably quiet stretches stuttering terribly as the resolution drops right down to a full-on pixelated mess, while busy areas — such as the infamous stair fight scene — perform surprisingly well in contrast.
What you're left with as you play through this old classic is constant stuttering and, even in docked mode, a resolution that varies wildly and very noticeably from moment to moment. It's headache-inducing stuff and not the way you really want to experience a game of this ilk, struggling to decipher enemies in a furious mob as you get your Ninja head absolutely kicked in.
Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge doesn’t fare much better here, either. The London-based opening to this rather disappointing third entry in the series immediately set our alarm bells ringing, especially in handheld mode where it's a dark mess of pixels that chugs along, making it a chore to successfully time anything you're attempting to hit your opponents with. Switching to docked mode does see Razor’s Edge performing reasonably well in comparison to its portable counterpart — and even much better than Sigma 2, bizarrely enough — but it still suffers ceaselessly in terms of overall image quality and frame rate. It looks and feels unpolished at all times and you end up waiting uneasily for the next frame rate drop or jarring image blur. These just aren't the types of games you want to be having constant issues with, and jumping back into the likes Bayonetta 2, as we did for comparison here, it's quite remarkable just how big the gulf in quality is in terms of how this port has been handled. It's just nowhere near smooth or clear enough.

In the end, what Switch owners are getting with this one is anything but a Master Collection, really. The original Ninja Gaiden Sigma may run well enough, but otherwise what's here has served only to whet our appetites for versions of this collection on other platforms that are promising 4K resolutions and a rock solid 60fps. If your only viable option is to play on Switch, you’ll at least still get to experience the joy of the original Ninja Gaiden, albeit in its slightly watered down Sigma incarnation. Otherwise, this is a thoroughly disappointing experience that delivers stuttery, pixelated and rather unpleasant versions of Sigma 2 and Razor’s Edge.
Note: A Day One patch for Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection is adding gore and decapitations from the PS3 versions of Sigma and Sigma 2, plus minor bug fixes. Performance isn't specifically mentioned in the notes, but it's not impossible things might improve. Should that be the case, we'll update this review to reflect the changes.
Conclusion
Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection gets off to a promising start on Switch with a decent port of Ninja Gaiden Sigma that performs well in both docked and handheld modes. However, as soon as you boot up parts two and three it's all downhill, with dynamic resolution resulting in a pixelated mess in places as the frame rate consistently struggles to keep up with the action. All we needed here was a solid, no-frills port and this collection would have been an instant recommendation. As things stand, it's a disappointing experience that needs patching ASAP and should be the last version you opt for if you've got the choice to play elsewhere.

what a surprise. the pc release is also a mess. i guess they just didn't want to make an effort.
After the CyberPunk 2077 debacle, nothing surprises me anymore
I really hope they fix the performance issues, I pre-ordered the physical release a while back and was really looking forward to trying these out. I would have figured a game that was released on the Wii U would hold up fine on the Switch, so I wasn't too concerned. If it holds up at at least 30FPS, I'll be able to tolerate the performance, but it's a shame to hear about the issues overall.
I hope the physical playasia version is patched by time I get it.
Based on the PushSquare review I think Switch might've been saddled with a really ho-hum conversion
I might as well just pick this up on PS4 or PC
I'm no performance snob, but that fourth screenshot is so rough it looks like a PS Vita game.
EDIT: Does the site randomize it's images for the review? Never noticed that before. Since I'm getting different screenshots every time I reload this post, I'll note that I'm specifically referring to the one with Ryu fighting near the peach blossoms trees.
@tonyp1987 Here's hoping.
Also, I can't tell if those two fleshy circles on your avatar are knees or breasts and it's bothering me. Lol.
Well thats a shame, people been asking for this for a long time.
@Toy_Link Funny you should say that. I read online that they had to use the Vita versions cause they lost the source code from the original games.
2021 720p makes sense
Oh... I must say I didn't see this coming... Dissapointing.
I really hope they release a big patch soon that improve it a lot. I want to play these games on my Switch, but not this way.
Edit: I'm seeing other reviews and videos and it seems that it looks and plays fine. So weird.
The first game is the one to go, but paying for a trilogy and being able to play only one of the games at a reasonable quality is just not worth it
Well, at least the originals are available through XBox Backwards Compatibility.
Bummer. This game wasn't on my radar but it's something I'd be interested in. Unfortunately the review score means I'm not likely to dip in. Hopefully they clean up things and I can pick it up later.
@BetterThanVegas That's completely fine by me. Weird... What game did Nintendolife play? Maybe it got a patch and this review is from before?
@Casual_Gamer95 Yep I heard about how they botched simple resolution options as well which you have to do a workaround.
Oof, probably doesn't sit well for the PS4 version either, since most ports that come to both platforms these days tend to be pretty identical in most ways...
And yet again many people will learn to never preorder.
Oh so these got glowing reviews when they were new but now they're average? It kinda urks me when a game is received well on it's original release but suddenly on newer hardware it becomes average on the reviews. Oh and yes I'm referring to the sigma and Razors edge versions because even those got good reviews back in the day. If you loved a game when it was on older hardware you shouldn't feel any different about it on modern consoles unless it was a horribly butchered port.
To heck with this review. If you go in expecting a modern experience up to today's standards then you must have forgotten you're not playing a modern game duh!
As for them not being NG black or whatever I still have my Xbox with the original game so I'm good. It's not that big a deal to me really. The games are great nomatter which version.
Ughhh, man I was actually looking forward to this too
Apparently there's a day one patch that fixes things.
The games are fun at their core and I can't see Team Ninja leaving a jank framerate version of the game on Switch
Better to just get the Xbox BC version of Black it seems.
@TheFrenchiestFry yeah looks like it.
Even PS4 is just only a little bit better. At least no performance issues but the other issues are kind of the same as switch version.
Glad I didn’t buy this at all
@Zeldafan79
You should be questioning those old reviews rather than this new one because maybe just maybe the games have fundamental flaws that reviewers back then glossed over for whatever reason. You also very clearly didn’t read the review which clearly stated this is a botched port on Switch hence the lower score.
At least Mario golf is coming out soon
hopefully they patch the issues up but razors edge was a far superior version over the original 3rd one just saying its not as bad as you making it out to be wen comes to the series itself.
@sixrings Mobile hardware on release is 5 to 10 years behind the performance levels of modern consoles. The Switch is based on 2015 mobile hardware placing its capabilities in between a 360 and an xbox one. When put into context 720p is understandable given the hardware. Especially when we're dealing with a poorly optimized port.
Damn. And I was quite looking forward to this too.
And how can Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge be performing worse than the Wii U version?! That's madness.
I'm still tempted as it's cheap enough, but this seems like a very poor showing from Koei.
There is nothing wrong with this game. Stop giving games like this bad scores just because you don’t like certain things about this game. This gets a 9/10
@Zeldafan79 @Ccc1985 The review score isn't average because of the quality of the games, it's the quality of the port itself. According to the review, NG2 and 3 have severe performance issues and the resolution drops so low that they become pixelated messes at times. It's very clear that the games themselves are great, the port just wasn't handled well.
@SalvorHardin
Maybe those original games that got good reviews weren't so flawless but nostalgia and the fact that they were new made people remember otherwise. Either way It's annoying and silly to compare an old game to modern ones unless it was supposed to be updated to modern standards. These were not and no one ever said they would be.
Just wat he'd a video for the switch version and it's different then the review
This is the only review from MC where the screenshots are captured from the Switch itself. The others, more positive reviews use generic press-kit images.
@VIIIAxel i do agree this port could of been better which i hope they fix those issues with patches down the road but i do think the review is way to harsh especially with the reviewer slamming razors edge cause he doesnt like it even though the original third one was way worse just saying.
Ouch. Here’s hoping patches will clean things up.
I play this game over Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z.
@dani3po Yea..but they did play the actual game so...they would still have accurate opinions of the visuals and performance
I'm shedding silent, ninja tears.
Switch Pro is needed or devs will continue to struggle.
@Zeldafan79
They literally say its a bad port. Are you ok?
Good work on the brutally honest review. Will definitely avoid the Switch conversion of this collection.
@nessisonett Xbox also has access to the gorier original version of Ninja Gaiden II.
It's a no-brainer if you're playing these games on the TV and already own a modern Xbox system.
Lazy. It seems like the PS Vita ports were handled better and those were on a system that sold worse than crap. With the large install base Switch has you'd think these third parties would at least put a little effort into ports, especially of games as old as these. No excuses for this. All said, I still say for anybody who has the option, especially if they have an Xbox One X or Series X, try to hunt down copies of NG Black and the 360 release of 2. That's these games at their best. 3 is pretty meh no matter which version you play.
What really annoys me is that due to the lazy port job no one will buy these and they will think no one wants a new Ninja Gaiden game...
@Thatsalie
Plenty of devs have made perfectly fine running games on Switch. This is laziness nothing more. When Capcom just put out something like Monster Hunter Rise it makes this shoddy port look even worse.
@Thatsalie no its not these issues wouldnt happen if the guys that ported it did a better job on making sure these issues didnt happen in the first place that wat we call laziness.
@RiasGremory I didn't see it slam Razor's Edge, there's a quick mention of it being disappointing (which could be referring to the performance) and that's all. A 5/10 review isn't a negative one either; if anything, I think it says a lot that the collection still got a 5 despite the many performance issues. It seems to me like the reviewer really enjoyed the games but had to be blunt about the performance aspect, which is part of the job.
@Thatsalie
Why is this the most negative review i can find online? None of the others even mention these drastic performance issues that are apparently in the switch version. Besides this stuff can be patched if needed. A 5/10 is too low a score and seems a bit nitpicky if you ask me. As if they ran flawlessly on their original release but this review acts like they did.
Ouch. I had a feeling this was going to happen considering Koei Tecmo's track record regarding game performance on Switch has been abysmal. Even games they developed specifically for the Switch like FE Three Houses and Age of Calamity have run laughably bad from a frame rate standpoint.
Guess I'll be getting the PS4 version.
@Gamer83
I'm just saying. We are reaching a point where developers will start blaming the Switch.
Sounds like the port is bad across all platforms. Do better, Koei Tecmo.
Dang, I was looking forward to this collection as I haven't played these games yet. Maybe I'll get it on PS4 if it runs better there.
Honestly, when I heard that it was advertised at hitting 60FPS, I knew it was a sham. I'm sure it does hit 60 from time to time, but a consistent framerate is more important! Especially in a game this fluid! Nintendo! Get on that beefier hardware, please, so that devs don't have to struggle with the current model, any longer!
Remember, guys - NEVER pre-order
@BloodNinja Dude these are PS3 ports, they're not suppose to struggle on Switch or even the Wii U. Even if Nintendo give them the most powerful hardware in the world to work with, being lazy won't a good game make. If these were PS4 or even Xbox Series X ports then we could blame the hardware for the struggle but these old games shouldn't have these performance issues on current gen hardware.
Also Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja are close dev with Nintendo, they shouldn't even had this kind of difficulty with porting these old games to Switch especially when similar games like Bayonetta, Dragon's Dogma, and Devil May Cry 3 plays so well on Switch. Even devs that are not that close with Nintendo made better ports on Switch like Gearbox with the Borderlands games and Saber Interactive with the Witcher III.
Razor's Edge on the WiiU was amazing and ran fantastically. If it's really as bad on Switch as they say, then it's just a shoddy port.
Woof. I remember being pleasantly surprised at how well Razor's Edge performed on the Wii U, rough to see that it's been brought so low here.
I see this and just wonder what the studio was thinking. People would understand if they delayed it to the end of summer to fix up the performance issues. But now that they released it in this state, they've damaged the brand's reputation and will have to play catch-up for weeks if they want to salvage it.
@Ccc1985 There's nothing wrong ! in a game where speed and precision are all, image quality and frame rate issues are the perfect companions🙄
@dojmin agree ! I was a fan of Ng series... but I felt a bad smell about this port...
@Park_Triolo It's a shoddy port cause it's not based on the original Wii U version of Razor's Edge, it's based on the awful PS3 port of Razor's Edge. All three games are just lazy PS3 ports. All the best versions of those Ninja Gaiden games are on the original systems so if you want the best versions of Ninja Gaiden 1, 2, and Razor's Edge just get them on original Xbox and Wii U. It's the same thing if you want the original trilogy as well, go with the original NES games and not the awful Super NES ports.
I bought it for my series x. I hope it runs well on that. I haven’t played ninja gaiden before so I’m looking forward to experiencing this franchise.
This is really disappointing to hear. I was really looking forward to this collection but I guess I will hold off for now and hope for a performance patch down the line
I'm kinda surprised at how bad this review of the game is... Other sites and channels seem to be giving a more favourable view...
Interesting, SwitchUp, one of the most honest, reliable Switch channels on YouTube, gave this a very high score (82%). Did you play an older version of the game?
@Park_Triolo Although it looks slightly better, Wii U version had more frame drops and a worse resolution than this version.
After playing through 1 & 2 on an overclocked Vita (locked 30fps and 544p) I was very hopeful this would be a stellar port, such a shame. Was really tempted to get this if only to experience the 3rd entry and revisit 1 & 2 again on a modern system sigh
How do these games get the green light to be released in this state?
@Ghost_of_Hasashi I don't pretend like I know the development team's job. How do I know they were lazy? I wasn't there. That's only in our imagination. The only thing solid we know is that the Switch is fairly weak for a game that pushes the hardware, like Ninja Gaiden. Just focusing on the facts. If some report comes out and it has videos of the devs sleeping at their desk, then I'll believe your story, but right now I can't assume that.
@VIIIAxel that’s what it probably is more like actually. Everyone wants 60fps or higher while I’m over here like if it’s fun I care less as long as it’s not all over the place constantly which I doubt this is. 30fps is completely fine with me considering that is what it ran at before anyways.
Thats a bit disappointing to hear, still getting this on Switch though. Granted, when it goes on sale. I know people will blame this on the Switch hardware itself, but for goodness sake, the first two ran on the much weaker Vita and the third ran on Wii U. A shame they the devs. didn't this port justice.
@Zeldafan79 The games are great but they run horribly on the Switch. “Oh this stuff can be patched if needed.” Great! And next time I turn in a horrible and low effort book report for my teacher, I’ll be sure to complain when he gives me an F on it because I could just fix it and make it better past the due date!
The Switch is the best at making ports suck.
It sounds to me like the NG3 Razor's Edge Switch port is poorer than the Wii U port. Am I right? If so, that is poor from the devs porting team. Makes me not want to buy this at all but I may get it in the bargain basement situation. We'll see....
There's been plenty of great ports on the Switch.
Funny. Looks fine to me on all the videos I see.
Could it be some people are just too hard to please?
What did you expect? Tecmo KOEI ... I'm sorry they didn't make it, I was a potential buyer
Y'know, I'm not against Switch versions not being day and date with other versions if it's to optimise the game. This review does read a little more scathing that other reviews about the drops in resolution and frame rate. Which is odd. Wonder if it improves if you turn the Switch off before loading? I'll still pick it up at some point.
@rushiosan Game performance videos on youtube mostly fake
@rushiosan thanks for the link. Sigma 2 looks absolutely fine.
Funny how the first still despite it being a older game always seems to be the one that turns out better then it’s predecessors, the Vita version is also still good.
Not gonna lie, I only like Ninja Gaiden Sigma, anyway 🤷
@Zeldafan79
1. Games age, opinions change.
2. That isn’t even the point of the review. Read the review before commenting.
@rushiosan True. Well it's not a fixed 60 fps, but it never dropped to 40 fps. Didn't pay much attention to texture scaling tough, but it seems to run fine
This is why you check out multiple reviewers cuz switchup says it's pretty good aside from a few technical flaws. Easily patch able and they do a patch series addressing updates. You guys should too.
Doesn’t seem any excuse for this. We all know Switch isn’t the most powerful hardware around but it’s run much more demanding games than this.
Maybe issues with the legacy code they’ve ported from or time constraints I suppose but either way the end result is a poor quality port.
Thanks for the review. In response, I cancelled my physical preorder. There is no excuse for a compilation of old games with such a long lead time having a day one patch and performance issues. It's not like it needed a crunch period.
@weoputjlsldfkj lmao
there is always some sort of problem with a port to switch
@xxx128 these are PS3 ports, not Vita.
Argh, this was one I was really looking forward to. Oh well, there's still Mario Golf right... right?
That's pretty disappointing. I've never played a Ninja Gaiden game before so I was looking forward to playing the collection on Switch. But I guess a physical version was only available through Play Asia anyway. Well I have Sigma 1 & 2 for PS3 and Ninja Gaiden 2 for 360 to play one of these days...
@dani3po We got sick of 'bullshot' press images for Switch titles a while back and decided it was worth the effort to take our own screens for our reviews, both for handheld and docked, so you can actually see the game you'll be getting. Glad it's appreciated
@Joriss yeah, maybe they add blood and swords to Mario Golf.
I wouldn't worry too much about this review.
I'm sure a patch will be there. And Contra Network shows good things about Sigma 2.
Plus, Nintendo Life's reviews are sometimes hit and miss
I already ordered the physical version from playasia. At least the first game will run smoothly... Hopefully by the time I dig into the later games they'll have them all patched up. I will be curious to try them though, just to see how jarring the res drops and frame drops are.
Hmm. I might buy this anyway as I only really like the first one and that one sounds OK, although I've only played the original and Black versions on Xbox so I'm a bit worried I might not like the Sigma changes.
It's kinda weird Ninja Gaiden 3 doesn't run well on Switch considering it was a Wii U title, it shouldn't be any problem for the Switch to run it considering how well other ports run.
here's a strange idea, how about fixing and patching the game before it releases?
if only there was a Switch Pro out there to address these issues v_v
Oh well, I had already preordered on PSN anyway and was going to replay them on my PS5. Sigma 2 in particular is one of my favorite character action games.
@Zeldafan79 I agree! Though my guess is that a standard review for a remaster and port might be limited in structure. If anything, I’d think there should be a special framework for reviewing ports or remasters without holding them to current gameplay standards to indicate the focus is on the port and how well it transitioned. Instead, like you point out, it’s weird when old classic Mario games are rated highly, but these.. not so much.
EDIT: If I had to review ports, I wouldn’t even use the 1-10 scale or review the game. This was indeed spelled out in the article as many pointed out, but it is the FRAMEWORK and presentation of the standard review that I find limiting for specifically reviewing quality of a port.
The first two games looked and played great on PS Vita, And those came out years ago. How can this be worse than PS Vita?
In a game like this you want a rock solid framerate so unless they patch this game it is a no go for me, it's a shame as I had never played these and was wanting to give them a try since Ninja Gaiden as a series has a little history on Nintendo platforms.
@Zeldafan79 You do realize things age right? and that gaming ages more then any other media. Not only that if you read the review you would see the collection is a shoddy port with the issues being more then the games have aged.
5/10 really ?
Switch up give it 82%
Switch watch 9/10
Stop. Pre-ordering. Games.
Demand to see a f̶i̶n̶i̶s̶h̶e̶d̶ product before you pay for it.
I'm seeing more and more sites where they give this game a much much higher score (the Switch version). It's said to have a few technical issues, sure, but nothing to worry about, nothing that affects the fun, and for sure nothing that can't be patched in the near future. Some places even give it a 9/10.
I'm definitely getting it.
I mean, I understand that, if you don't like these games much, you give it a lower score than it probably deserves (that's what I would do with Animal Crossing, for example XD), but 5... That's way too much. I don't know how much I can trust the reviews in this site anymore...
Preordered the physical version after reading the review, since the first game seems to be an OK port! Seems I'll replay Razor's Edge on the Wii U though, if the port is that bad. It'll be an interesting comparison anyway.
@the_beaver You know all reviews are opinions, right? Impartiality doesn't really exist. it's not about trusting a site it's about making a decision using your own nouse about the information you read on the internet.
@tanaka2687 Ok, my mistake. I should've said from the beggining that I don't know if "I" (personally, according to my tastes) can trust the reviews here. It's already corrected.
That's the only issue I have with this site, it's something I've been thinking for a while. The rest of it is really enjoyable.
Then this should of been delayed & released as a Switch Pro exclusive.
Even at only 720p, I expected better.
A 5 because it has performance issues?
Did you play the originals??? Lmao
@Bizzyb Show, don´t tell.
Ouch. Well I've already got NG Black, NG2, and Razor's Edge on the 'ol 360.
@Drac_Mazoku I don't trust they reviews, they gave bad scores to games that were rather good.
A real bummer since I really wanted to grab this games, oh well...
@Zeldafan79
Too be fair the dude from SwitchUp (awesome channel btw) said some of the same things as far as the technical issues. And he's definitely a reasonable & fair reviewer IMO.
@0nett
Nah, I can't agree with you on that one. As I have definitely watched quite a few of SwitchUp videos. And one thing he doesn't do is sugarcoat a lot of issue issues with games on the Switch. If anything he is realistic with expectations and generally calls it as it is and he sees it. I've watched him literally call out or nitpick things in games that are actually developed by the people sponsoring his videos.
@UndoControl
Yeah, not buying that one my dude. Especially when you can look at games like Bayonetta 2 that ran darn well on the Wii U & seen Panic Button's work already. Just laziness, pure & damn simple.
So it really is a modernised version, pixel art and all. I'm surprised they didn't give it some procedurally generated roguelite elements and some souls-like metroidvania icing on top, on a free-to-play bottom layer of what could become a cake along its equally procedurally generated roadmap, given that you spend enough. Ah well, off the wishlist then. Which isn't bad either.
So far, I tested ninja trials in the first and second parts and ran a little in the third. I agree with the review about the drawdown of frames and the overall picture. But nothing surprising, from today's team ninja, I did not expect anything else. The main thing is that the games are now on the switch. They certainly will not be corrected, you can not hope. No patch was released on Vita at the time. The publisher threw the ports in the store and this is the end of the matter, based on how easily they cut out the online co-op, excusing themselves that it was difficult to implement it, a stupid excuse. And the bot in the second part dies just as easily already on acolyte, what to say about ultimate ninja..
Sadly this review seems to be spot on, Koei Tecmo did a really lazy job porting these games. Coming back to this game after so long i must say that Ryu Hayabusa greatest enemy is not the various fiends, ninjas and monsters he fights but the atrocious camera which seems to be operated by Satan.
@rushiosan I have bought the original ninja gaiden black, and ninja gaiden 2 for my Xbox Seriex X. True 60 fps with 4K. For me I think it was a better choice.
@Thatsalie
From the video you can see on Youtube it doesn't seem too bad, though..
I'm gonna buy it anyway, it's the only way you can play these games on the Switch...
@Whitestrider I would say the games are worth it still. It is also possible that there was a performance uptick from the day 1 patch also.
Through my review copy I had input delays and frame rates crawling to a halt (mainly on 3). I have yet to check them again after the update so will be interesting to see.
My main disappointment though is the cut modes and cut online. My poor unknown ninja doesn't have a chance to shine in this collection
*Note I played exclusively handheld for all three.
I'm kinda glad it's not great on the switch. Handheld mode is just a disaster in the waiting. The game really gets the adrenaline flowing. The forces the average user is going to exert on the controller is going to cause the Joy-Con shells to start cracking around the screws. Pro controller would be fine.
As a longtime fan of the series, I can't wait to play it on my PS4 Pro, I did just upgrade to a 55" 4K 60fps UHD. After 15 year's, my 42-inch's screen was looking as faded as my DS lite's.
@VIIIAxel im not disagreeing on the issues plaguing this collection not arguing on that but im just saying razors edge the game itself is not as bad in the franchise itself compare to the original 3rd one
This is very disappointing. A truly complete collection on the game card would be worth the price of admission. As it is, I may have to look into a PS4 copy. I prefer to support Switch ports, but this sort of corner-cutting decision on Switch releases and collections has happened time and again, and has cost Nintendo revenue - my dollars, at least!
@Slowdive I guess we now know why there was so little word about this until the release week. Good call on your part.
This is why you check out multiple reviewers cuz switchup says it's pretty good aside from a few technical flaws. Easily patch able and they do a patch series addressing updates.
@Ocaz I understand what you're saying, but in my case, as a potential customer of the physical version, a sub-standard build on the game card itself means no buy. I don't want to keep the revision histories of games in my mind when I barely have time to play the games for weeks at a time.
Reaaaaaally wished they'd stop half-arsing ports
So, after reading the review, i still have a question about the gore: I noticed that there are 2 different versions with different age ratings on the JP eShop, and from what i understand the western version gets an automatic update for more gore/violence.
So, does this mean that the update (and the higher rated version on the JP eShop) have more gore then the PS3 versions of NG 1&2?
@COVIDberry First off, there IS no game card. This is a digital only release, and a compact one at only 3.8 gigs for all three games. Secondly, I bought the game and am currently watching my friend fight the first level boss of Sigma 2. We have had zero slowdown or technical issues. Smooth 60 here. Some aliasing, but seems normal. So....... has it been patched? I'm trying to make some sense out of the horrifying article I just read.
@Retrogamindaddy Asia has received a physical copy, and I know of places in Canada to get an (import) copy as well.
Again, if the build on the disc were stable, I would be interested. I am sifting responses in this thread and elsewhere to see if that is the case. As you can see, there are conflicting reports...
Waiting for this to get shipped from Play-Asia.
I've watched a couple performance and I must say, whoever wrote this review did a very poor job in regards to how the games run. This review makes it sound like the games barely function, but the framerate dips are nowhere near as bad as claimed here, and the resolution dips are fairly brief when they happen.
@COVIDberry Okay, thanks for clarifying! I don't purchase out of country disks, so I'm glad that there's not a US physical available.
@UndoControl
I agree with your assessment based on it being an original Xbox game.
However the install base argument is very limited.
The "Switch Pro" would eventually replace the Regular Model.
Ever since "Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition",
Switch Owners have already had the mindset,
"Its no longer a matter of wanting to upgrade,
I NEED to upgrade"
Also, this game looks worst than a PS2 game. If I didn't know better I'd guessed it was a Dreamcast game.
@UndoControl Fair point. Still looks like a Dreamcast game.
@EmirParkreiner To make it a little clearer. The 'gore' patch just enable head decapitations to be visible in the game. Previously you would still chop the head off but visually the head would be unharmed.
There seems to be something specific with head decapitations in Japan that is more gory than limb dismemberment. The gore patch does not bring in the gore from Ninja Gaiden Black or Ninja Gaiden 2 Xbox releases.
@Retrogamindaddy @COVIDberry Quick correction, Ninja Gaiden 3 Razors Edge is the 3.8gb title, with Sigma 2 being 4gb and Sigma 1 being 3.2gb.
You're right, and I was mislead. The whole trilogy was listed incorrectly at 3.8 gigs. This still doesn't solve the mystery of this terrible Nintendo Life review, which seems to be innacurate, as the games run fine for me.
@Retrogamindaddy Nintendolife switched to a policy of showing screen captures from handheld mode gameplay for their reviews.
They did this as it is a mode available to all Nintendo Switch owners , including Nintendo Switch lite owners.
Does this game look better in Dock mode?
If so I'll consider buying it.
@tadams587 The first and second game perform and look great. The third game is a mess, but I assume that is just how it always was. It seems to look and perform as desired. I am trying to understand how my beloved Nintendo Life could have released an innacurate review for this collection.
I know I've already said this several times in this thread, but Nintendo Life is just absolutely full of crap in this review. I almost always can rely on this website for accurate reviews of Switch games, but not this time. These games are performing flawlessly. So don't listen to this review, and I seriously hope whoever is responsible for this misinformation gets found out, and the review gets fixed, because that is just wrong.
@tadams587 And just to expand on my earlier response, the games run fine in both handheld and docked. There are absolutely no issues. Don't listen to this review. You can safely spend the money. It's worth it just for the first two games. I archived the third.
I’m completely baffled by this review, did Nintendolife specifically look for every technical issue and exaggerate them.
I’ve had zero issues with the game. I advise anyone who is in doubt about the game to watch the SwitchUp review on YouTube.
Imagine releasing an old game in worse condition than when it originally released. If that's not a shining example of the state of the games industry right now then I don't know what is.

Here's a framerate test for those that want to see an actual bar to tell them that they're dropping frames. If you don't notice, good for you. You can't see framerate dips but some people can and it tends to throw them off. So yes, if you're sensitive to framerate dips it's the people who are telling you that it's completely fine that you shouldn't be listening to.
@iuli The other reviews I've seen for this game were video reviews - meaning they both prove those reviewers DID play the games and allow us to see actual footage.
Every review and comment I've seen has mentioned performance issues, but - other than this review - they've all said they're a bit of a shame but not game breakingly bad. Except this review.
Bear in mind that 5/10, while officially being 'average', is a score that tells the public this game is an absolute stinker to be avoided at all costs. From what I've seen, read and heard from every single other source apart from here is that that is not remotely the case.
Like I've said before nintendolife reviews are not the same as before, watch the metacritic score ,this game have a metascore of 73, the nintendolife being the worst at 50. Change your scoring system, 50 in the mind of people is no buy, 60 is maybe, 70 is acceptable, 80 is good, 90 is excellent, 100 is must buy.
I just got it on Steam, and aside from it being locked to 60fps (fixable via mods) and having no actual graphics setting options, it's not that bad; it's just a very barebones port, but the actual game runs fine on PC.
@yuwarite surprise: it's not bad on the Switch either, reviewers sometimes are being melodramatic...
@munstahunta yep, their score system is a joke!!
@Whitestrider Well, I would say it actually is bad and not worth buying on Switch, since the game doesn't run well and is poorly optimised. Not a fault of the Switch, but the developers.
@yuwarite it's not bad...have you even played it 5 minutes on the switch??
Even the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game are at the SAME meta critic score as the switch.
Not the switch's hardware but just not great optimization from devs.
Also I might only get this game ONCE I get a pro controller
@COVIDberry even the PS4 version isn't that great. The Meta Critic score for the PS4 version is the same as on Nintendo Switch and Xbox
@Whitestrider Well, let's see...
"Dynamic resolution sees some areas extremely pixelated"
"Frame rate rarely hits its target in parts two or three"
"Portable mode can get choppy and pixelated outside of the first game"
At the end of the day, gameplay is the most important thing to a game. So having a bunch of framerate issues affect the gameplay, especially a Ninja Gaiden game, where framerate is extremeley important for counters and timing, etc, is enough reasons to not buy the game for Switch.
@yuwarite at the end of the day I don't give a damn if the frame rate isn't a solid 60 fps, and also from the videos I have seen It never goes below 40 fps, much better than Hyrule Warriors AOC, then. For now I'm having a blast playing Sigma 2 on my Switch lite, I'm glad I didn't trust this review!
I also was dumb enough to buy the physical version on Playasia, but because I couldn't wait to play this collection I decided to buy the digital version. 5/10? Lol...I mean, It sure isn't a perfect port, It could have been better, but still I've seen much worse. Also, I can't understand if people don't want to pay full price for this collection, but it's a must buy for half the price, or even 3/4 of the price.
Bought this, but it only downloads number 3, probably because of that $%$ed up update. Seiously pissed off
Looking back this really is such a poor review. Fundamentally these are excellent action games for their respective era.
Also, considering there a 3 games and 1 of them plays flawlessly that should hold some weight.
Lastly, there are TONS of games that have performance issues and niggles...esp in handheld mode. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 looks like ass in undocked mode. Plenty of games have had framerate studders (including BOTW) but non of those games were so harshly criticized for it.
A 5 indicates that the game(s) are sloppy, borderline broken, not fun and/or barely worth playing if at all...this poor review may have turned some people away from a game/series that they may actually love...it would be a shame if the games got patched but someone never played it bc of this one review.
It would be even worse if the series died because of the unnecessarily poor reviews bc this wasn't Mass Effect LE level of remaster.
My $.02
I really wanted to pick this up on Switch but ended up getting it on Xbox and now I’m glad I did. This seems like a cash grab by Koei Tecmo, at least on Switch. How is it that a machine that ran Bayoneta 1 & 2 at a solid 60 FPS can’t do the same with these decades old games? Clearly no love and affection went into this port.
@Whitestrider I think the frustration comes from the fact that this is a bad port of basically a 15 year old game, at least AoC is a new game. People wanted this collection to be the absolute best it possibly could be, because they don't have those old consoles lying around to play it anymore.
@yuwarite people want many things, but reality can be harsh...
Anyway, despite some flaws, I'm happy to be able to play all Ninja Gaiden on my Switch, and finally NG3 for the first time in my life.
@Walle559 I've seen videos on YouTube of NG2 with a framerate counter and it was a smooth 60 the entire way through.
This review makes it sound like the game is constantly struggling to maintain even a 30fps when that's simply NOT true. I've seen them give plenty of passes to games that have a few areas where the frame dips and never marked down several points for it. Complete hypocrisy
@Bizzyb I'll admit when I saw this review I had a knee jerk reaction and called Nintendo for a refund. Really should have looked at some other reviews first. After watching some YouTube reviews, it apparently never dips below 50 FPS. Lower resolution doesn't bother me if the frame rate stays stable. Well, I'm gonna re-buy it, and I also got a physical copy from PlayAsia. Just wish I could play Black and original Ninja Gaiden 2 as well since I've heard they're the best.
@Emceehamster The ninja gaiden collection download is only of Razors Edge. You should see 1 and 2 in your 'redownload software' if it doesn't appear automatically. Hope that helps solve your issue.
@Whitestrider @Bizzyb @yuwarite I just want to point out that this review is likely fully based on the review code without the day one patch. As for video reviews and footage, they have to be of footage after the update. (Cough embargo stipulations cough)
Playing the games a few weeks ago, I can affirm the frame rates were no where near like they are with the day one patch. With it crawling and freezing in places along with causing input delays across all three games. This review should rectify things as it states at the end of the review regarding the patch could resolve more issues, which seems like it has.
Sigma 2 definitely feels a lot better since the patch at least.
I watched some performance videos of NG2 and 3 on Switch and they show that both games generally run at 60fps the majority of the time, even during combat, with some very minor and brief dips to the mid-50s in heavy combat scenarios. WTF is this reviewer on? The staff should print a retraction of this review to save face.
I never want to say anything negative about Nintendo Life, which is a great site and YouTube channel. However, they have a guy named PJ O'Reilly writing "reviews" on their site and I don't know how the rest of the guys can be so naive as to keep publishing his stuff and ruining the site. A reviewer is supposed to tell the reader whether the reader will probably like the game or not. That means giving info that helps you make a decision whether to buy or not. Instead, O'Reilly gives a very niche and maniacal view - the view of a technical freak who is interested only in pixels. Whether the game itself is good or not hardly matters, and he spends anywhere from zero to five seconds discussing that. It's all about the framerate and megapixels. He did the same thing with Kingdoms of Amalur. You read his review, and you know nothing about the game - only the framerate, which 99% of people don't notice and always gets resolved with one patch without anyone caring apart from the pixel fetishists. It's as if I wrote a review about a cereal and all I talked about were the box. Every videogame developer hopes that their great game doesn't end up in the hands of O'Reilly. Nintendo Life: if this guy is your cousin or best friend and you don't want let him go, why not have a special segment on the site called "Pixel Freaks", that way we know what we're getting into before we read? I never look at the writer's name, because I'm used to reading great stuff on your site, so I always read this guy's material and only check the name of the writer when I realize the review isn't really a review.
@Bizzyb
Thank you for being a voice of reason in a sea of weirdos!
@accc
You're right, he's a weird pixel nerd. He's supposed to tell us how good the game is, instead of trying to be Mr "I know more about technical stuff than you do".
@Giygas_95
You HAVE to look at the name of the reviewer first. Nintendo Life has all good reviewers except this weirdo O'Reilly. I called him out months ago when he did the same pixel job on Kingdoms of Amalur, an excellent game which he ignored the myriad qualities of in order to concentrate on the framerate and megapixels. No one listened to me, and now we're back. Nintendo Life probably owes this guy money, or he may be a major investor in the site, so they can't get rid of him.
@the_beaver
It's not weird - this "reviewer" loves doing this. No other website or Youtube channel is complaining about this game.
This review definitely needs to be updated. Game runs fine now with patch.
@Arawn93
Have to echo this, while I haven't yet played it, this many days after it's quite shocking the review hasn't been updated despite the knowledge of the impending patch.
Patch 2 is out. The rating should be updated! Ninja Gaiden 2 runs way better now, higher resolution and smoother Framerate.
@Arawn93 how can this be? The patch 1.0.2 came out yesterday, 05.07.
Your comment is from 13.06.
@Gamer83 I have to disagree about what you said.
I played Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1 on Vita and this looked like the Original XBox version. And Sigma 2 was supposed to be really bad on Vita.
The Switch version is now in a good state.
They improved resolution and framerate.
Also, I wouldn't say that the XBox versions are the real deal. Gaiden 2 has more gore on XBox, I know and I think, partly, the graphics were a little bit better on XBox. But the Sigma version of Gaiden 2 has a lot of good things. Additional levels with Rachel, Momiji and Ayane. Also, they were improving the levels, changed things for better.
And with Ninja Gaiden 1, I don't know what some people have. But Sigma is the ultimate version to me. It has way better graphics and 60 fps.
So now, after the patches, can we say the game is already worth it??
I'm looking forward to playing this trilogy, but I don't want to find a technical mess, as said in the review...
If so, they should update the review, shouldn't they?
@the_beaver
They should, but it's looking more and more likely they wont. Which considering they said they would is pretty shocking.
Game's been patched. It runs well. Review will probably never be updated.
This is why game reviewing based on technical merits is inherently broken - patches can always come out to fix technical issues, but reviewers seldom acknowledge those patches and rarely update reviews. So now, this game will languish with a 5/10 review score because people think the performance is terrible and the game won't be played. Meanwhile, a whole lot of people are going to be missing out on what the game actually is, and all of the developers' efforts will be completely ignored.
Alone Ninja Gaiden 1 is worth getting this collection. I'm playing it right now after I finished Sigma 2. Sigma 1 runs so perfectly on the Switch, I love it.
@VIIIAxel So...did they fixed it?
@Gus_Campos I haven't heard anything about a fix unfortunately. Sounds like you're better off getting this on another platform if you want to play it and have access to another device.
I played all 3 games. Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge is the best one.
