Look, as much as we hate to admit it, we ended up rather liking Waifu Uncovered. Yes, it was largely puerile and immature, but the shmup mechanics sitting beneath the smut were actually quite solid – so much so that we awarded it a respectable 7/10 when we reviewed it last year.
If you're also a fan, then you'll be pleased to learn that developer One-Hand-Free Studios has teamed up with Eastasiasoft to create a sequel entitled Waifu Discovered 2: Medieval Fantasy – and it's coming to Switch on October 14th.
Here's some PR:
When an evil aging spell infects the garments of 8 beautifully medieval maidens, it falls to the legendary Uma Ninja to protect them. As one of these equine heroes, it’s your duty to destroy the clothing of these cursed damsels before their youthful grace and vigor are stolen forever! Using magic to miniaturize and face the diminutive demonic forces behind this threat, the Uma Ninja rush into battle for the sake of love and valor!
Waifu Discovered 2: Medieval Fantasy is a vertical shoot’em up experience that’s easy to play and addictive to master. Choose a hero and power up your ship as you blast through malicious monsters, collect gems and destroy infected clothing. Between stages, purchase items or permanent upgrades and listen to gossip from the mysterious shopkeeper. Then decide which maiden you’ll attempt to rescue next, perhaps discovering a few alluring secrets along the way.
We've picked four screens which are suitable for reproduction here – as you can imagine, most of them weren't. Ahem. There's also a trailer here, but we won't embed it as it's age-restricted, for obvious reasons.
Waifu Discovered 2: Medieval Fantasy will cost $9.99, and there's an additional 20% launch discount available for a limited time.

Ha ha ha. No thank you.
I like how you say ‘we’ liked it when you specifically brought in MoeGamer to give it a decent review due to ‘backlash’ from people annoyed that you didn’t give Meow Meow Boob Game 9/10.
This is supremely cursed content.
Not the fun kind of cursed you can have a laugh at. The release of a game like this in this in 2021 is saddening.
The previous game was a fun little diversion. Looks like they stepped up the art and the gameplay a bit.
Every person who posts in the comments here is secretly going to buy the game. Including the person right above, right below, and you who are reading this comment! @_@
Its nice to get since it makes the ResetEra crew angry
@Xaessya What does that even mean.
A game the whole family can enjoy together 😎
I shall not fail at my duty! 🤣
(Oh, it's a shmup, not for me)
People can say what they want, but games like this have a right to exist, and I'm glad they still have a home on at least one of the console ecosystems.
@ArchRex It means they laugh at people who want respectful representation in video games. Resetera is known for taking a progressive-minded look at gaming.
Good to see a diverse selection of games. As long as people respect the age ratings system, games of all types can be made. Truly we are in a renaissance.
@MARl0 joke's on you, I'm rarely secretive about such purchases.😜 Granted, most of the Switch ones are still in my wishlist (where this post's subject will be going as well), recurrently elbowed aside by higher priorities, but I did get Moero Chronicle earlier this year, as well as its spiritual predecessor Monster Monpiece on Vita. There's only so much shame you can expect from someone who has played Bayonetta on the subway.😆
@CharlieGirl Resetera's inclusion advocacy warrants credit where due, but doesn't excuse their lapses into fanbrained derogatory attitudes to Fiction any more than anyone else's. Promoting diversity can look bitterly ironic when combined with (or, alas, sometimes outright disguising) the endorsement of audience meddling, and I'd rather celebrate the former on the part of creative projects like The World Next Door and Ikenfell than on the part of a fanship-spliced tabloid who can seem to have gone for the topic because it allegedly helped them sound edgier and more important.
Just began to forget the comments section from the first instalment.
I'll wait for the PlayStation exclusive "Burka Edition".
Meh, I’ll have to pass on this.
@CharlieGirl I think that’s the problem. It’s not even really fun, it just comes across as sleazy.
Woah, didn't expect this to get a sequel! Well I've "enjoyed" the first one in more ways than one and this already looks much better. Can't believe I'm saying this but I'm looking forward to Waifu Discovered 2 hahaha
@CharlieGirl "The release of a game like this in this in 2021 is saddening."
People demanding censorship over some trivial fanservice (that they're pretending to be offended by) in 2021 is saddening.
The first one was actually decently fun. I may get it during a sale
@MARl0 no secret about it. I bought the first game, I'll buy the new one. It's cheap, silly fun and I'm all for it.
@CharlieGirl
Assuming the premise that people want nudity in their games, or perverse content from time to time (because few people are saints, and some people can't find their kink elsewhere), I have a question for you.
How would you fix this game to be. . . Right? Okay? Inclusive?
If there were men one could shoot the clothes off of as well, thus objectifying both genders, would it be okay?
What part of the lewd content, or lack thereof, is the problem in 2021?
Edit:
Is it a larger problem, like there are too many of these games objectifying women, and not enough objectifying men?
Assuming objectifying for sexual satisfaction is never going away, how would it be best to balance that?
@Kiwi_Unlimited "What part of the lewd content, or lack thereof, is the problem in 2021?"
The problem is pandering with cheap titillation.
@PickledKong Still kinda surprised the HuniePop games aren't on Switch. It's the ideal console environment for them. I don't want to have to sit at a computer in order to play smutty bejeweled!
@Ralizah I don’t think anyone’s really saying that the games shouldn’t exist or anything. They’re just 99% of the time incredibly bad games that sell because of their titillation. It’s only really visual novels with that kind of content that I’ve actually thought were alright. Like there’s blatantly zero reason to play Senran Kagura over any other actually good beat-em-up. Instead of these relaxing rules around sexual content fostering creative and interesting games that feature that content, we just get Boob Mahjong. Horror games specifically can work really well when they lean into the seedier side of things but no dice.
@CharlieGirl What's so different about 2021 compared to any other year for something like this?
@CharlieGirl
I appreciate your response.
I've been thinking on the original conversation points quite heavily.
I assumed that the issue was with the media failing to encourage appropriate treatment of genders (let's face it, several decades worth of content led entire generations to believe that acting in a certain manner was okay toward the other gender, when it clearly wasn't).
But I fear I may need more clarity on your current point.
Is all cheap titillation a problem, such as porn?
Or is it that this game also tries to be an effective shooter, causing the lewd content to lose the focus, thus making it cheap?
When is a porn-esque game acceptable?
@nessisonett
You may have a point, though I fear horror games take away the point of sexually oriented games, as a person is usually feeling a mix of the wrong emotions when nudity comes into play.
Nudity in those games are usually to unsettle, not to appreciate.
@nessisonett The Senran Kagura games were good fun before they moved over to Playstation and went whole hog with the porny stuff and flanderized the characters. SK2, in particular, is one of the more technically impressive games on the 3DS, and I loved the nightmare fuel Yokai designs in that game.
In any genre, you'll get zero effort stuff mixed in with actually decent games, though. I don't think games like Gal*Gun: Double Peace, Huniepop, Senran Kagura, Valkyrie Drive, etc. deserve to be brushed off as trash just because they feature titillating character designs and/or sexualized content.
Anyway, I've not played the first game in this... erm... is it a series now? The first one reviewed well, though, so I assume it has some sort of merit as a game.
As to my comment, I notice a lot of "why does this exist in [current year]" remarks online whenever games like this pop up. Also worth pointing out companies like Sony have effectively erased certain properties from existence by adopting somewhat puritanical standards regarding what can be published on their platform.
Even if most of it's not designed to cater to me, I feel like smut and smut-adjacent content is fine as long as it's marketed and labeled appropriately. If there's a smut problem in 2021, it's that there's not enough diversity to what's there.
I feel like sex and horror can mix well (SH2 is obviously the go-to example), but it requires finesse. And with increasingly rigid standards on major platforms against sexual content, I feel like fewer developers are going to think it's worthwhile to develop something they might not even be able to easily distribute.
@Kiwi_Unlimited I speak as an Eroge genre enthusiast when I say the following.
This game is definately more on the cheap side of being underdeveloped as far as sexiness and artwork is concerned, lacking any style of sexual charisma.
Looking at the gameplay of these games, its definately rather bland as a danmaku as well.
Finally, it's a kind of game that seems powered by meme fuel, since more legit eroge or ecchi works never use the word "waifu", let alone in their titles. Waifu is a purely western word born on 4chan like forums. That should tell you enough of how bootleg this feels.
If you want a sexy shmup, Otomedius or Caladrius Blaze (which is on the Switch) are better at both sexiness and gameplay and offer far more of a stronger direction in artistic technique and sexual charisma. Even a sense of character. GalGun and Omega Labyrinth are also fun in how they present themselves.
Might buy the game.
@nessisonett The Senran Kagura games are actually good.
@CharlieGirl Resetera is a hypocritical echo chamber where people can get banned for "trolling" for saying they want a game in a topic about said game (for example Cyberpunk 2077) or if you don't follow their hive mind. And you can have laughs at these types of games, the first game was great
I mean, I am even the kind of person with literally thousands of anime girl waifu computer wallpapers. And I still don't think I am in the appropriate audience for this.
Honestly, this is basically ripping off of Deep Space Waifu anyways, pretty sure that's a better game and stuff. Dunno, only saw it in one of Markiplier's videos. lol
Also yeah, kinda annoyed the Senran Kagura games aren't coming to Switch...the real ones...not the petting simulator or the overpriced pinball game with only 2 tables and 5 girls. >_>
You'd think since Burst was originally on the 3DS, the HD version would come to Switch as well...nope, just Playstation...you know...the console where Sony wants to censor everything like crazy? lol
Protect your families! Also, check underneath your kids bed, they may be hiding a dungeons and dragons manual, or a Slayer CD. There's definitely a lingerie catalogue. We must discourage these heinous acts of character creation, head banging, and sexual fantasy! Has someone started a change.org petition against this yet? Onward friends! We shall attain our sanitized utopia!
One-Hand-Free Studios? Lmao
And why are you a horse?? (“As one of these equine heroes…”)
@nessisonett I don't know about the new games since those seem to have given up on the gameplay, but the Senran Kagura hack n' slash games on the 3DS (at least the second) was quite a competent game and there wasn't anything close on the portable that I could think of. I even liked the creepy music and enemies. If you consider them as beat' em up I guess that they would have more competition but then again aside from the Kunio games there weren't many competent beat'em ups on the 3DS and they felt quite different.
I remember that it got harsh reviews saying stuff like that it was mindless button mashing,which honestly applies to anything on the genre as well as fighting games when played incorrectly and that even the visuals, which I found to be really good were criticized when I actually think that they were among the best of the 80+ games I had on the portable. Even the fanservice could be diminished as you could turn off the clothes destruction animation. The story was crap though haha, some people said it was great but I can't defend the game on that regard.
@Joeynator3000
To be fair, even Deep Space Waifu seems to be inspired by a 1998 doujin game named Sentimental Shooting (which features characters from the dating sim series Sentimental Graffiti).
Maybe there are even more games like these, so it's kind of a genre or a sub-genre of shmups.
@Ryu_Niiyama A one word comment on NintendoLife? Heathen! Witch! Keep this sorcery off this holy site!
This is the part where I usually add something that's actually on topic, but I don't have anything to say, so here we are
It amazes me the amount of softcore porn games on the eShop...especially considering Nintendough doesn't even let us message friends to "protect the babbys". Kind of ridiculous.
this site is finally operating correctly
@CharlieGirl wait, so only your orgasms are approved? You can't have a suggestive avatar about sexual relations and then cast shade on someone elses.
not very inclusive
Are you a bad enough dude to burn some excess braincells? Keep scrolling and find out!
@SamirMalik
Now that is an absolutely fulfilling explanation.
Thank you.
Does it run in 60 fps? If yes then ill give it a look ..
waifu uncovered is a surprisingly competent shmup
Since my previous post was deemed not useful I’ll elaborate. I’m am sickened by the objectification of the female form the gamification of making a female vulnerable and exposed to the most likely male eye for male sexual gratification. It’s creepy and since men usually don’t have to endure being cat called, watched inappropriately, touched inappropriately, or had a male attempt to damage, remove or adjust their clothing the assumption is made that this is “harmless” when it adds to the assumption that it’s ok to treat or think of females (because this starts on little girls and just gets worse as we age) this way.
I’ve no issue with female nudity as I get naked every day nor do I take umbrage with depictions of the female form (I do prefer such depictions to have basis in actual anatomy however instead of some approximation) , but just as I would feel violated if I was either forced to get naked against my will for the male gaze or viewed unawares I see nothing fun and or worthwhile about these types of games. Females are not allowed to be people first in this world and for a species that claims rationality as its defining trait, it’s sad that even the veneer of society offers little buffer from such things. Society is not inclined to change of course, so what I say is on a random website ultimately useless, but I will not pretend that this is ok out of fear of male (and sometimes female) reprisal. So again, barf
@Ryu_Niiyama
so in other words, I am not allowed to indulge in a silly sexy fantasy game because you have a problem and find it creepy that guys are enjoying the beauty of the female form and having a fantasy.
I'm sorry, what?
This is a kusoge. Not a sex ed lesson. Nobody's taking this seriously to begin with because its both crap and it's SUPPOSE to be silly fun. (but failed, cuz it's crap and I already explained why above)
You don't have to turn this into a conspiracy theory on the level of flat earthers and the illuminati just because (from what I'm gathering) someone's method of bullying you was by intentionally making you feel uncomfortable. I went through that so called "cat calling" too, but in a different style. (The people who do these things irl aren't doing it for sexual gratification but for a power trip.)
But pushing both men and women under the bus for understanding these appeals, creating them in a fictional setting and expressing themselves in a healthy fashion is going a step too far. Especially when you're talking about half the entire human race! Think of the absurdity in that mindset with this mere fact! It's misguided and cynical. Extreme even, over a few bad apples.
@PtM If it was mere dislike then I wouldn't have responded the way I did. But overstepping boundries and pointing the devil finger at others, while also putting half of the entire human race on the negative block, is going too far.
Also, define most, because all of us wouldn't be here if our parents couldn't stand each other because they had to get horny...
This game is actually tough to get past lvl 2
