Recently, we had a mini-rant over the way publishers eek out platform announcements and we specifically highlighted the fact that Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster for Steam and mobile platforms only. Now, it seems inconceivable that this collection of classic RPG remasters (all of which debuted on Nintendo consoles, remember) wouldn't come to console platforms, but as yet there have been no announcements.
In a recently published Q&A looking at various game details on Square Enix's website (as pointed out by Nibellion on Twitter), the publisher has addressed its choice of platforms and said that console versions would depend on demand or "requests".
https://twitter.com/Nibellion/status/1417410445510651904?s=20
Here's how the ever-reliable, not-at-all-wonky Google Translate interprets the second question in the Q&A:
Why did you choose Steam® and your smartphone?
Currently, Steam® smartphones are being distributed from "I" to "VI", but there are works that have been on the market for more than 10 years, and maintenance is difficult. The evolution of smartphones is amazing. So, first of all, I wanted to remaster with the same smartphone and Steam® so that everyone in the world could play for a long time. If there are many requests, I will do my best so that I can play in more various environments! support me!
Whether you're a FF fan or looking for a convenient way to try out the first half-dozen entries in a classic RPG series, this 'wait-and-see' approach is irritating to say the least. It's easier to understand when small publishers and indie developers are forced to recoup development costs on a single platform before branching out elsewhere, but Squeenix is hardly a mom 'n' pop shop, is it?
Would you be interested in Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster on Switch? Let us (and Square Enix, apparently) know in the poll below:

I will buy at least a couple for my phone, since it’s the sneakiest way to play when I’m bored at work.
But what I am most curious about is if the FF1 version will bring back the Vancian Magic System…?
I voted NO for a lot of reasons.
1. FF 1 & 2 you can get better graphics on PSP. Also GBA version as well.
2. FF 3 & 4 have 3D remake on NDS.
3. FF 5 & 6 have PS1 and GBA version.
It’s rather a no-brainer, isn’t it? Or at least, it should be a no-brainer. Obviously there’s demand for it on consoles, Switch especially.
They're just taking the piss they know there's more demand for these on consoles than the platforms they announced them for. Square can't read the room 😑
I really don't get them. Well, it's up to them to measure demand. Do they expect "demand" to get to them inbox?
@Anti-Matter maybe we could get those console versions you mentioned in a collection, then the pixel one is an extra?
Given they're both making so many remakes lately I do wonder if a Mario RPG remake might be in the works. It's lack of inclusion on the SNES games on NSO is very odd, especially as it was even on the SNES mini.
I said it already over on Pushsquare but I don't get how SE thinks the demand for this would be bigger on mobile than it is for PS and Switch. Most people don't want to play long JRPGs on mobile, they want to play short and easy games there
Yeah, cos when say a company announces a new type of tyre design that boosts fuel efficiency they base it on its success on aircraft landing gear before offering it to car manufacturers 🙄.
Will defo buy these if released on Switch but I ain’t buying them on PC or Phone to make that a possibility. I don’t buy a toaster I don’t need in the hope the company then releases a coffee machine.
@Anti-Matter
1. These are the same graphics as the PSP versions.
2. The 3D remakes mess up a whole lot of mechanics and a lot of people prefer the 2D look.
3. The PS1 versions have dreadful load times. The GBA versions have gimped soundtracks due to the worse sound chip.
@progx
I don't like pixelate Final Fantasy games.
I prefer 3D remake like FF 3 & 4 NDS.
SquareEnix have enough time to make 3D Final boss Kefka, Neo Exdeath, etc for FF XIV but cannot remake FF 1, 2, 5 , 6 into decent 3D Remake like FF 3 & 4 NDS with some voice acting ?
3D Neo Exdeath, Final boss Kefka on FF XIV look very WOW.
@Anti-Matter Such a horrible take. Who's walking around still using a PSP/PS1/NDS or GBA. Cmon man, you can't be this dense.
How does demand on mobiles equate to demand on consoles? This to me is spin on the old, it will be coming eventually, but in the meantime can everyone buy it for their phone please.
Err...yeah?
That font though; not sure I'd want this version of these games.
I assume these Pixel Remasters means 2D gameplay?
Have to wonder then how FF3 is going to look since it was never released with the 16-bit art style (though of course there was the cancelled WSC version)? Only the Famicom original and 3D versions.
While i personally am not interested, it is odd how FF is available on Steam and not also on Switch, xbox, PS. I can get it on my Nvidia Shield, but not Switch? So the question of, why not consoles? Is completely valid. Even a FF compilation would make sense, like the Secret of Mana one. Square will always be an odd company.
@mariomaster96
Bit of a generalisation there, if that were the case, the Switch wouldn't be the massive success it has. I'm far more likely to play any longer game (that isn't graphically intensive) on a device I can play short chunks around the house.
@Anti-Matter Yeah, seriously. These could all conveniently fit on a single Switch cart but you would rather carry about 20 other consoles with you instead.
But also, good for you for branching out and playing something other than rhythm games!
So as someone who has never played any of those games (I've only played the 3d ff on ps2) would these be the definitive edition of the games?
@nessisonett
I prefer FF 3 & 4 NDS version as on FF 3, it given by 4 different characters with official names (Luneth, Arc, Refia Ingus) that never before exist, some changes in storyline that i didn't really mind as i have never played FF 3 NES. I have finished FF 3 NDS two times.
FF 4 NDS in 3D form and some voice acting looks way much better than 2D version in my opinion. I can feel the emotion from every characters. But i still haven't finished FF 4 NDS as the game was pretty hard as Super Famicom version.
@Anti-Matter Yes, 3 and 4 DS were great games. But the rest of your argument falls apart. Are you really still playing your GBA? Mine's been stashed away in a box for a decade and a half. Even the 3DS, my favorite system of all time, is collecting dust.
DEMAND!! Also physical please
@PessitheMystic
Well, i have huge interest in rhythm games from Konami but i also played other genre games as well.

@Moonlessky We won't know until we can play them. They don't release until the 28th and that's just the first 3.
I think we all know these games will be coming to consoles, atleast the Switch. Since they are releasing for Steam, they will be playable on the Steam Deck.
@Bret
I only have two GBA games (K-1 Pocket Grandprix 1 & 2).
I have never played FF 1, 2, 5, 6 GBA version, FF 1 & 2 PSP version.
I rarely played my two GBA games i have but i since i have NDS Lite, i can always play my GBA games with my NDS Lite.
@hippoeater
"Who's walking around still using a PSP/PS1/NDS or GBA?"
I still do that before pandemic.
Playing PSP / NDS / GBA on the go in this era, why not ?
We must always be cognizant of the fact Square-Enix is a Japanese company which will always prioritize and look to its resident gamers for cues. Not that they ignore the rest of the world, but I don't think our opinions matter as much to them.
As I understand it, mobile gaming is more enthusiastically accepted over there than it is here. Just look at the comment section any time SE announces -another- mobile game from a beloved franchise. There's a lot of disappointment and sometimes outright vitriol from a Western audience.
So I'm not surprised they made this move, although I am unhappy over it. These were Nintendo games originally and they deserve a place on the Switch, at least. Of course, the more, the merrier, so the other consoles are a given.
EDIT: Although, given how much we crowed over not getting male Viera and Square eventually capitulated to demand, I think our chances are good they'll listen again.
On Switch? Obviously. On all consoles including Xbox? Obviously. Thank you, Square Enix.
Square Enix even don't make these Pixel Remaster series available on GOG. It's bad.
Square Enix really seems out of touch. They milk FF7 to death but barely touch anything else from the series.
@The_New_Butler yeah, of COURSE we want them on the switch!
That's just stupid, their releasing these on consoles should NOT be contingent on whether or not it sells well on Steam and mobile. What a d-bag move.
@SpringDivorce Yeah but the Switch isn't a smartphone
I don't know if my kids get Christmas presents this year, maybe if there is enough demand.... We'll have to wait and monitor the situation.
Oh, and by the way, if somehow SE gets back in touch with reality, I hope that also means they take a look at those fonts and... just use something...anything... less eye-burning generic.
That would be great, Square Enix, but only if u feel like it...
I just want to give Squareenix money for FF6 on Switch and they won't let me. Do they not want my money?
What a bizarre take. I honestly don't understand their logic at all, it sounds like they actually aren't sure people will want to play these on console. Maybe they wouldn't sell insane numbers, but it's ridiculous to assume they wouldn't at least recoup the minimal cost of porting them over.
ok let met get this carrier pigeon to pay attention to me first
what's the worst font I can imagine?
@mariomaster96 Don't forget XBox. Lot's of RPG demand there too. I think we could probably just say "Consoles" and be accurate
I own all Final Fantasy games on Switch including spinoffs like Chocobo Mystery Dungeon and World of Final Fantasy. I'm not sure what else I am supposed to do to show that I want more Final Fantasy games on Switch. I am definitely not going to purchase this collection on mobile or PC in hopes for a Switch version though.
Yeah I'm gonna pass. I dont need another pixel remaster of these games. Something like the upcoming Dragon Quest 3 one sure, happy to drop whatever they want for something like that.
They know there's demand. Otherwise they wouldn't have responded.
This is their way of boosting sales on mobile and PC in the meantime. Because these games were already on PC, in fact two of them had 3D remakes on PC. Tough sell to ask ppl to buy games they already own on the same platform they already own them on.
It's an even tougher sell when you realize the price tag is like $75-90 for all 6 games on PC.
But give me all 6 on Switch for $59.99? Now we can do business.
Mostly I'm kind of wondering if this is an attempt at obtaining outrage headlines. Of course people want the old FFs on consoles. Or perhaps they're starting with steam and mobile to obtain the funds to port later to consoles? But I don't imagine square enix is lacking that cash already. Or maybe it's just a simple timed exclusive thing.
Nah, this is stupid. I'm not doing this.
Put the games on Switch, and I'll happily buy them.
Or don't, and I'll spend my money elsewhere.
Square-Enix knows there's demand for these games everywhere, and a lot of Japanese third-party stuff sells respectably well on Switch. This isn't 2017 when we were coming off the sales disaster that was the Wii U.
I refuse to believe they are that blind and stupid. I refuse.
Depends on demand? They brought over the mana series, the final fantasy legend collection, and the saga games but FF 1-6 depends on demand? I thought it was a no brainer lol
These look like God awful ports anyways. How bout just port the entire PS1/GBA games of these to console instead. I hate that the 2D remake of Final Fantasy III got stuck on crappy platforms like mobile and PC. When a big game company like Square Enix make mobile the priority game platform over dedicated gaming consoles is when you know gaming has gone down the tube. Nobody was asking for these on phones to begin with and those who play games on phone doesn't play these games. These garbage are not worth playing on the OLED.
I feel like I've run out of crazy pills when I remember that they weren't immediately announced to be on consoles as well — Square Enix, please furnish me with whatever arcane means of "showing demand" you have in mind, please and thank you.
Look at the high res font on top of the low res pixel art this project has no idea what it’s trying to be.
@Vortexeo
plus things like the FFVIII remaster got launched on pretty much all platforms at once.
FFVII-XII have been released on multiple formats, FFXHD got multiple re releases but for some reason the last time anything from I-VI was re released on console/handheld (outside of snes classic) was the port of the FFIII remake, back on psp, nearly a decade ago.
Why is there a ‘No’ option on that survey?!
When does the public get tired of these types of things? All of the remasters, Metroidvania’s, games that look like something from the early 90’s. Pokémon 🙄 (sorry! 😂). Things feel soooooooooo dry! It amazes me, the amount of units still being moved. The fact that Animal Crossing, dominated 2020, didn’t help! 😂 I’m seriously at a loss here! I’m starting to look at gaming like, “ I don’t get it.” 🤷🏾♂️ 😂
Obviously.
Though if demand means I have to buy them first on a platform I don't care about just so I can buy them again where I actually want them, not really. And either way this feels like those Atlus surveys pretending not to know what people want. Offer the product I want and I'll buy it, or don't and I won't, and get your kick out of of people begging elsewhere.
@SalvorHardin Yeah, Dragon Quest I and II on Switch had that problem — medium-res sprites poddling around on a low-res background, added to the juddering framerate scrolling was a recipe for eye-melt.
@mariomaster96
Its selling point is pretty similar. IE, it's mobile.
Sad to hear of new sprites and rearranged music as well as adjusted difficulty.
I really wanted to play the most-like-the-original versions.
But even then I would still them I just don't know how to show demand for Switch versions, I ain't buyibg them on my phone.
I'm sick of buying these games over and over again.
God, Squeenix is dumb as heck. Why did they choose mobile over console is beyond me...
TRANSLATION: "We're actually working on the console ports right now and are going to get our loyal customers (also known as "suckers") to double dip on them next year like Final Fantasy VII and IX lol"
@outsider83 Because unlike you, not everyone wants to play the insert generic M-Rated AAA open-world survival shooter rpg with overly realistic graphics in 8K over and over again
@nessisonett
Just to respond to your earlier points:
"1. These are the same graphics as the PSP versions."
These are NOT the same graphics as the PSP versions. They actually look pretty close to the PS1 versions though (Origins at least). The official website makes that pretty clear. It sounds like they are updated from the original source (of course they will be similar to any of the remakes/reissues because the games are meant to be the same source. From the Website:
"With the release of the FINAL FANTASY pixel remaster series, Kazuko Shibuya once again enters the fray as the lead pixel artist, helping to update and upgrade the very pixel characters that she first helped pioneer nearly 35 years ago, allowing you to experience the original essence of the game as though you were playing it for the first time in 1987."
"Not only that, but the pixel remaster series will allow you to play the first six mainline FINAL FANTASY titles in widescreen and on the go with a consistent pixel style, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful worlds that have come to define generations of gaming in HD and without compromising graphical quality."
"2. The 3D remakes mess up a whole lot of mechanics and a lot of people prefer the 2D look."
This is an opinion, but I mostly agree. I quite enjoyed the mechanics of the 3D remakes and played them both a couple of times. The ATB issues of the GBA were not present (to my memory) in the DS Remake/Steam/Phone versions. I will say that the 3D versions of III and IV are BRUTAL. I began IV on the SNES - which I found out later was the easy version. I completed the PS1 version recently, and I found that it was a tougher experience. Especially Zeromus at the end. I had to power level, which I don't normally have to do when playing that game. I hope they keep the original difficulty though. I love getting my behind handed to me. Motivation.
Anyway - the 3D remakes are even more difficult than the original - at least that seems to be the case for me.
As far as aesthetics go, I do prefer the pixel versions just like you say most people do. The 3D art is fine...but definitely not as great (in my opinion).
"3. The PS1 versions have dreadful load times. The GBA versions have gimped soundtracks due to the worse sound chip."
I definitely agree with these points. Though the Origins versions on PS1 don't have terrible load times. In fact, I consider the origins versions to be the most "pure" versions excepting the originals. Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI however do struggle loading up battle screens on PS1. Load times are ridiculous!
The music on the GBA IS definitely not the greatest either. It's listenable, but listening to them next to each other will help one realize how much the GBA struggled with sound.
All of this being said, I am pretty excited for these remasters. I am hoping the music lives up to the original. I know Uematsu is involved, so mostly I am excited...but then I think about how Square-Enix ruined Secret of Mana's music in their 3D remake, and I just hope it all works out.
Oh...and I demand that these come to consoles! Is that enough demand?
If it has a physical version, I'd get it.
Yeah, though mostly interested in the 2D version off FF3.
So there was also demand for the mobile version, right Square?
I would have voted yes blindly and bought the entire stock...
Until i heard that these version apparently omitted every bit of extra content that was added over the years.
So, no extra dungeons, no extra boss fights etc.
And frankly, i take content over a new pixel look although i would have loved the entire 2D series to be together in a unified look and feel.
But oh well, i guess it wouldn't be Square if there weren't any pitfalls...
The only FF that needs a good remake is 5. It would be great to have 6 re-released on Switch with some minor bug fixes but the game is otherwise perfect.
A pixel remake of 3 in the PSP style would be nice too, but the 3D remake is pretty good.
there is a demand for these old Final Fantasy games to be on modern consoles this is Square Enix being tone deaf
I would argue consoles have the most demand for a port out of all. Especially Switch owners.
Heyyy those are almost all yes!
I believe they already have console plans. This is just a way to drum up demand, because people want more what they think they can't have.
Please bring this to the Switch! I will happily give you my money for it!!!!
Pretty sure in Japan alone there would be demand for these on both Nintendo and PlayStation consoles and they would likely sell millions there because of it. Me personally I would actually buy these twice once for on the go on Switch and second a PlayStation version so I could have every mainline Final Fantasy on my Trophy list except 11 because I am superficial that way.
Write "Demand" on a postcard and send it to Square Enix...
@The_New_Butler The reason corporations make these comments regarding demand, is to bait people into wanting their product even more. It’s just a simple “carrot on the stick,” strategy.
Crazy. There's obviously a market on consoles..
Showing that Square Enix does not know how to read a room whatsoever considering that basically EVERYONE'S been asking why this collection isn't coming to consoles since the moment of its announcement.
@OstianOwl Square is completely ignoring everyone in the room these days.
@SMH88 Kinda like sega
Slap em all on a cart, charge £40 and you have a money printing machine.
The problems I have with these versions are:
They don't contain the extra content that the GBA and PSP versions added to them. They are the base version of when they were first released with a few bug fixes.
The font is horrible and doesn't fit with the pixel look of the game at all.
The prices for what you are getting is extremely expensive. €75 for a bundle deal on steam for all 6 games.
For me if they had all the extra content from all the other re-released versions ( well exception would be ffiv with the after years as that is more of a sequal game rather then extra content but I wouldn't say no if we got it also) then the price would have been more fine with me even if it is still way too high.
Square Enix are almost as tone deaf as Atlus.
@SilentHunter382
No extra content is hinted at for FF 1-3
But FF 4-6 pages are vague
So we can still hope
Would love the GBA extra content with better sound and prettier sprites
Square Enix just loves its mobile gaming, for better or for worse. I simply can't believe there's a high demand for classic FF games on mobile over dedicated gaming systems, I just can't.
This is such a cynical approach. Of course they’re going to release them on console! They also know that the series has fans who will download the games on their phones/tablets, only to double dip when they make it to consoles. Sorry, but I’ll stick to my GBA/Super NÉS Mini. Anytime a company does this, I make it a point to be one less customer.
Technically it is coming to console: Steam Deck. Perfect for $399 64GB Deck buyers, too, as file size will be small.
@jamesthemagi You sure cause the pages for 1-3 show this at the bottom.
This is from the FF1 page.
"This remaster is based on the original "FINAL FANTASY" game released in 1987. Features and/or content may differ from previously rereleased versions of the game. "
EDIT: My bad misread your post and massively failed to notice the "No" in the "No extra content" part of your comment.
Somehow I hadn't heard about these being released. Not sure what's going on with the extras - that question page says "some" of the extras of previous ports have been removed, guess we'll find out next week.
If they work on Steam and phones, I assume they're Unity and should be easy enough to port everywhere soon enough. And now for the reason I posted, here's a human translation for the quoted paragraph:
"Why did you choose Steam and Smartphones, kupo?
Steam Smartphones [sic] currently have I-VI available right now, but some of them were released over 10 years ago, and they're hard to do maintenance on... Smartphones have also seen amazing evolution over the years. So, to make sure that people around the world will be able to play them for a long time to come, they wanted to begin by remastering them for the same platforms, Smartphones and Steam. If there is a lot of demand, they say they'll work hard at making them available on other platforms! Cheer them on!"
@SilentHunter382
I used the word "hinted" because of their use of the word "may" but I agree with you, most likely 1-3 are directly taken from the original NES releases. However, the individual pages for 4-6 do not have similar statements so hope remains.
EDIT: Ah ok, I see. I thought your problem with my statement was the qualifier "hinted" and not a definitive "no."
@jamesthemagi I do hope so but it is very likely that they will be the same as there SNES versions. They will update those pages with screenshots and that same quote to the page once there is a solid release date.
The best way to do it would be to have 2 versions of the game. You can then pick from the title menu. Original or remastered versions. That way it will make the people who want to have the games as close to the original as possible happy while also keep the people who want the extra content also happy.
Why do we need to tell developers to port their games to other systems?
@SilentHunter382
If someone has a problem with extra content they are welcome to abstain from it. Is not like someone is pointing a gun at their head to use Yang at the final dungeon of FF4 instead of the usual 5 party members. Inversely, forcing me to play with only those 5 usual party members does "limit" my experience when another version offered this. I suspect many people, myself included, will turn away from this release if it has this limitation.
@Entrr_username
Actually, I believe is fair for developers to ask the public where they would like to play their games. It cost money, time and resources to port the same game to different platforms. And most people would not double dip.
SE is full of it though in this instance because they know fans have been clamoring for this.
@jamesthemagi This is the main reason why I am not going to buy these versions until we know what the full story is. When I play V I always try and unlock and level all the jobs in the game but with this version it reduces the amount of playtime I can get out of it as they won't have them.
especialy if it includes content from the Advance and PSP re-rereleases.
@Zadaris
If I play classic final fantasy on mobile, it's free emulation. I would gladly pay for a bundle on switch though
seems silly to put these out and not in 2D HD like DQ 3.
I'll be happy to pick 1 and 6 but i'm not sure about the others.
5 and 6 had bad PC/Mobile ports
Yes, all the SNES and Super Famicom RPGs on a cartridge, please. Especially FF 6 and Chrono Trigger.
This is what I call ClickBait from SQE trying to figure should we make it or not. They know already Switch owners would bite the chance to own it. They are just trying to salivate Switch owners is what they are doing. I am suspecting they already have a working development on it just incase.
It would make a lot of sense to have these on Nintendo Switch, but so would it have been to port the PS1 remasters to 3DS (especially with the GBA enhancements for FF5&6) and they never did that so I'm not holding my breath. They did port the first three games from the less famous Mana series though, so who knows?
Translation: We're holding out our hands and seeing who outbids the other for "exclusivity" between Nintendo and Sony. We're up to $8M guys!
Oh look, people just paid $30 to play Jelly Boy on Nintendo's console. I wonder if there could be demand for legendary SNES RPGs on that platform too?
@Flashlink99 To be honest, I’m not into graphics like that. I was baffled by the hype for the XSX and PS5. Tera flops and whatever Sony was talking about...🙄 I have a Switch and an Xbox One. I only use my Xbox to charge little table lamps and noise cancellation headphones. Ive always supported Nintendo. Even during the dark days of the Virtual Boy and the WiiU. Both of which I held on to, until 2019.
I don’t even like 4K! It ruins the magic of movies and games. It makes it easier to see what makes these things work. Couple of examples. In 4K, I can see the layering that goes into animation, which makes it harder to find the worlds believable. If I watch a multi camera sitcom, it’s easier to tell that their on a sound stage, with a fake set behind them. I can tell when a scene is being lit, via a lighting rig. Or if a forest scene is done on a soundstage.
Things are feeling stale. From these companies own digital presentations, to E3. Remember the hype for a 50 minute Direct, earlier this year? How interesting did you find it, if you watched? I was bored about twenty minutes in. I don’t mean to start anything. I’m simply expressing my frustration. 🤷🏾♂️
@outsider83 I perfectly understand your feelings, maybe I was a bit too direct in my comment earlier and I apologize. For me at least the last Direct was exciting, having a new Warioware and Metroid after so many years have made me feel excited again about Nintendo releases. I’m also happy that after 10 years I got to enjoy Skyward Sword at its fullest potential (not the greatest classic Zelda game ever, but a whole lot better than if I played it on Wii back in the day).
Problem is that the days of seemingly infinite creativity during the PS2 and GameCube era are long gone, as the costs of game dev have risen too much and that makes AAA game companies to commit to predictable releases, sequels and remasters for the new generations (kind of like in the movie industry). I miss those days as many probably do here, and the only way to relieve a bit of those wonderful times is through either remasters or the tributes paid by indies.
As for the AAA releases, I am sick of open-world games, I miss the fleshed-out linear experiences.
Also maybe if you feel frustrated about anything related to gaming nowadays, I think you should analize the possibility of, maybe… growing out of gaming. I’m saying this as I also feel a bit the same, the Switch might be my final gaming investment before moving on
Personally, I would have preferred 3D remakes of Final Fantasy 5 & 6 on DS rather than 3 & 4 because I never really liked 3 or 4.
@Flashlink99 it’s cool! I totally understand where your coming from. The last part of your comment, about growing out of gaming, it hurts. I’ve been struggling with the thought of that being the reason why I’m reacting to the current state of gaming, the way I am. I still remember coming home, and my sister having a NES hooked up, ready for me to play! Mario Bros., Track & Field and Duck Hunt! 😂 I had so much fun playing Mario Odyssey. So much so, it became my favorite game from the HD era of gaming. That was a little over a year ago. I know, late! 😂 It felt like I was playing through the evolution of Mario! 😂 It’s been a struggle, since then.
The Direct I was thinking about was back in January. I actually think Nintendo’s E3 showing was the most interesting. Metroid looks cool. I love Mark of the Ninja! It reminds me of that game! 😂
The industry feels like a whole lot of noise, not enough substance, for lack of a better phrase. I didn’t mean to poop on remasters. Those, along with ports, have introduced me to some great game (OKAMI!)) But when people get excited about the possibility of yet another The Last of Us port or GTA5. Another Final Fantasy remaster, I start to wonder about the industry and myself.
I’ll be honest with you. My eyes got a bit...misty...when I read the part about growing out of gaming. Then I started reminiscing. Almost felt like a therapy session. I got something heavy off my chest! 😂
Edit: I’ve thought about whether or not I should sell my Switch. Thinking this is the end. For some reason, I can’t let it go. But I was able to sell my old stuff. Going back to the original NES.
It's Final Fantasy, of course there would be interest. I know I would pick the collection up, if it came to the Nintendo Switch.
It would be nice if Square Enix cared about their customers, instead of pretending as this article proves.
So the best way to show our amazing intense level of demand is to ignore the PC editions and hold out only for Switch. Got it.
I badly want to tell them to shove it. I have all this crap on my Vita and its fabulous.
@Anti-Matter or you could get a remake on the switch and it’ll look and play better than all of them.
@Flashlink99 @outsider83 no need to grow out of gaming at all. Just get and keep the systems and games you love to play. I have all of the older systems and for them I have a old crt tube tv as well. I know the tv part isn’t feasible for some people but the systems and games are. Most TVs also allow you to play things not in 4K as well and in 4:3 and you can get adapters to hook the games up to the hdmi ports as well. Just adjust the settings for it. For me I do agree with the growing out of gaming as in this will be my last generation Xbox I buy probably as it is backwards compatible and I own all Nintendo systems as well and many of the games. I have no need to stop gaming just play the ones I love which I do all the time. So many lackluster games anymore that I have time to play all of them again which I don’t mind at all. It’s the route I would take instead of just growing out of gaming completely. I love the old games and there are so many of them you can literally have enough of them and never get bored with playing any of them. Be old heads and play the things you love and let the new gamers be the ones getting nickeled and dimes to death with all these micro transactions and dlcs for half complete games.
The one thing I looked for in a house when we bought one was a extra room I can have for my game room. I seen this all coming years ago and planned for it. I don’t regret it at all and over the years I have acquired quite a collection . I am satisfied with it and don’t need any of the newer stuff except the few Nintendo titles here and there. The rest of the time I play my classics and it keeps me completely satisfied. Ohh and we started doing the same with movies, buying all the older show complete series and movies and got that going as well because one day you may not be able to find it elsewhere and want it.
@HollowSpectre Let's just say there are a lot of companies not reading the room very well.
@Anti-Matter - "I voted NO for a lot of reasons.
1. FF 1 & 2 you can get better graphics on PSP. Also GBA version as well.
2. FF 3 & 4 have 3D remake on NDS.
3. FF 5 & 6 have PS1 and GBA version."
As much as I'd like to agree, to be fair, the GBA versions (and PS1 versions most likely) are pretty hard to acquire these days, and what is available tends to go for a pretty hefty price.
In response to the article, has there been confirmation as to whether the bonus content included in later versions (i.e. FFII's Soul of Rebirth) are going to be included in these versions?
@Dirty0814 I think you are onto something. One of the reasons I love the Switch is that it managed in just 4 years to compile a lot of classics that I loved into one huge library. I have a bookshelf full of great physical games, third-parties and almost all of the high profile first-party releases from Nintendo.
Unless Nintendo unveils a more powerful Switch-like console in the next generation, with full backwards compatibility, I will probably stop at the Switch, as it definetly won my gamer heart unlike any other system I played in my life
@Flashlink99 that’s the main reason I have the new Xbox and the only reason. If Nintendo does like they did with the da they will keep me. As far as everything else, I can just play the games I’ve collected or buy it on eBay or Amazon. I would much rather buy a game say for 150 on eBay that was on ps2 or n64 and enjoy that whenever I want than buy 2-3 of these newer games that are literally just a rehash of the same crap we’ve been playing for decades.
Honestly the biggest thing I hate about newer games is the length. I’m sorry but I seriously don’t want to play the same game for 120 hours ( BotW being an exception. I find myself playing my nes or ps2 more and more because I prefer games I can complete in a few hours to a few days or even a week or two but a freaking month, nah I’m good. Seriously invest in the classics and just play the oldies and enjoy them just as much as you did the first time you played it.
The problem is Square Enix equated demand with sales numbers. If they don't get enough sales on Steam and iOS/Android, they'll likely determine that means we don't want them on console. I remember with Chrono Trigger on DS, when sales were below expectation they said "Well, this just means you don't want more games in the franchise and don't like Chrono Trigger". No! It just means we didn't need another overpriced port of the same game. I'm afraid they'll learn the same incorrect lesson when these don't sell as well as they hope because many fans will wait for a possible console release.
If this came to consoles I would for sure double-dip. Physical cart on Switch for the collection and Digital on Xbox to go through and get all the achievements (how’s that for demand?).
For me; Final Fantasy VI is ‘the one that got away’ in that I have never played it (besides maybe 10mins on an emulator) and am waiting for the perfect version of it.
Personally I am infinitely more interested in a compilation of Final Fantasy I-VI in the same Octopath Traveler engine as the upcoming Dragon Quest remakes.
If I have to "demand" classic FF games on a Nintendo console (the reason they exist in the first place), then I couldn't care less about them. SE can suck a knob.
I voted Obviously but why do publishers really think people don't want to play old games past the PS1 era? Nintendo have proven several times that you can spit shine an old game and make millions and spend little on it.
Not in it's current state! one of the worst "remasters" i've seen. Ugly as sin
@Anti-Matter So you're dunking on this remaster because versions of the games exist that you haven't even played? That doesn't seem a little silly to you?
Square Enix: Releases several old Mana, Dragon Quest and SaGa games on Switch...
Also Square Enix: I wonder if people will buy these Final Fantasy thingamajings.
@The_New_Butler
Pretty sure the metric for “demand” is sales. If this is a huge sales hit on PC and mobile, management will say “Wow, this was a hit! Let’s port it to Switch/PS4/Xbox”.
If these releases sell poorly on PC and mobile, management will say “Wow, this was a flop! Guess there’s no reason to port this to Switch/PS4/Xbox”
@Bret
Not every old Final Fantasy games i have interest about. I only interested with FF 3 NDS from FF 1 - 6. I have finished FF 3 NDS twice.
FF 4 NDS was really hard, i still haven't finished the game since 7 years ago i bought it.
Also, i'm not interested with 2D pixelate style graphics. I prefer decent 3D model like FF 3 & 4 NDS.
@SilentHunter382 I would love it if we were given the options to have the extra content from later issues of the games. Even if they added it later as DLC...
I enjoyed dabbling with the extras in I, IV, and VI. It was something to do when you had finished the big bad and needed something for an over leveled party to do...
Voted "Err, yeah!"
Uh, duh. Yes please. I NEED that in my life!
I'd be interested if it had the original pixel version. I really hate the phone makeover they got.
Also I really just want them to make 5 and 6 like Octopath. I don't care about the rest.
Problem is, people say they want something, but then don’t end up getting it.
At least on steam, many will buy it, but won’t ever play it (as we do with steam games).
It’s worth pointing out that it says “If there are many requests (we) will work hard so that you can play them in other ‘environments’ (Obviously meaning platforms).” The key word being “requests,” not sales.
The Google translation is obviously funky, and the answer appears to be written from the point of view of a chocobo, making it more difficult for machine translation, but Google did get “requests” correct.
@NicolausCamp
for some reason its not even a case of it just being final fantasy games, but specifically FFs 1-6.
i mean on switch we have FFs VII, VIII, IX, X/X-2, XII, world of FF, chocobos dungeon, Crystal chronicles and even that mobile remake of FFXV.
while there may be some secret power move they are planning, but i would imagine that given how legacy content seems popular on switch and that quite a few switch users who have owned nintendo systems in the past would have quite a bit of nostalgia for the classic FF games (whether it be on the original systems or the GBC and DS versions) that classic FF on switch would be something that would definitely be highly requested or in high demand, though thats just my take.
maybe with the old fonts
Considering I have final fantasy vii-ix, x, x-2, and xii on switch it would have been super awesome to have the first 6 final fantasy games on switch as well so I don't understand why the couldn't have made a switch/ps4 version even if it was digital only
@Dirty0814 I’m still debating on whether or not to keep my Switch. Video games, in general, have started to lose their appeal. Mario Odyssey, Okami and Mark of the Ninja, were my last really good times playing games. It’s been a year and a half of struggling to care. I have a 128 gig memory card, full of Switch games. AAA and indie. I also had to buy another card. I have the NES and SNES apps.I look at it all and go...’MEH.’ I’m just going through a lot. I start to feel restless when I sit and do anything, except eat! 😂 Sometimes, playing retro games can increase my feelings. Like when played Star Fox 64. It was my first time since the 90’s. I should have avoided it and let my memories stay intact. 😒
Square-Enix is so full of it let me give you the REAL reason why they didn't port the Pixel Remasters on console...
Because it was cheaper to do it on PC and Mobile over Console. That's it that's the reason right there in one sentence.
However let's not forget the absurd amount of time and money there putting into milking Final Fantasy VII for every dime it's worth. Because they'll do that in a heartbeat no questions asked. But apparently they need to gauge "Fan Demand" for something that should be obvious. My god the cognitive dissonance of this company is staggering!
@Anti-Matter Except... not everyone is from the prehistoric times and has a PSP, a DS or a PS1.
@hippoeater Blessed.
