Re: Nintendo Museum Expands Its History With A New Exhibit

veeflames

Yup, can confirm the display was there! I went to Nintendo Museum yesterday and it was such a pleasant surprise seeing the Switch 2 in display. I wasn't expecting it at all so I was GENUINELY shocked and surprised. Unfortunately we don't get to touch (much less play) the thing but seeing it in person only a mere two days from when the world got its first deep dive was very surreal.

Re: Talking Point: The Super Mario Bros. Movie - What Are Your Favourite Moments?

veeflames

  • All of the references were great. Every single one of them. This is how references should be done for a movie adaptation. (looking at you, Sonic movie). Absolutely fantastic and shows the most sincere respect for its source material and its fans.
  • Despite the rather lacklustre plot development (it really can't be overstated how quickly plot points go by, from their introduction to their conclusion), I think every single character was great. Peach is a huge highlight, utterly different from what we're used to, and just a great character all around. The other characters have their little quirks, characteristics, and even moral standpoints and it's all packaged rather decently, albeit a little bit rushed or undeveloped.
  • The Mario-sourced music was great. Every single one of them (LOOKING AT YOU, SONIC MOVIES). Why they decided to go with some generic pop music in some scenes but Mario music in others is very baffling (they really had to take that page out of the Sonic Movie, huh?). The ONE scene that really needed Mario themed music ( the ENTIRE Rainbow Road scene - beautifully animated but why oh why was some generic epic music playing over it the entire time?!) made me sad because of the music choice they made for it. EITHER WAY. Wherever the Mario music plays? Such a earworm-y delight. You will not be disappointed.
  • Beautiful animation all around, the stretch and intricate human movements all shine in this movie. I feel Illumination shines with their animations so I wasn't even slightly worried at all about this one.
  • I think the BIGGEST highlight for me has to be the entire final scene with the showdown between Bowser and Mario in Brooklyn. Ugh, everything about it was phenomenal. Before that scene, I was kinda already disappointed at the really weird pacing and writing of the scene prior, but then this scene just showed up and took the cake. It was full of EVERYTHING - great music, emotion (such as genuine fear and concern due to Bowser's persona, and a sense of dread when Mario was absolutely getting destroyed and, for a moment, looked like there was no hope), an absolutely fantastic fight scene when the Bros. get the Power Star, the ending scene after all of that awesome, and, of course, references still chocked in here and there. That scene alone stole the show for me and was a fantastic cherry on top of what I thought was a decent movie at the very least.

Still debating publishing a review somewhere on the internet but yeah, those are some of the highlights I can think of. It's definitely a good movie, that's for sure!

Re: Super Nintendo World: Is It Worth It? Survival Tips, Budget Advice, How To 'Play' The Park

veeflames

Hey, Alan! I also went to Super Nintendo World on Opening Day, and I'm pretty confident that I spotted you! If you were wearing a black Nintendo Life shirt ("life" in red), pretty sure I saw you! I wanted to actually walk over and strike a conversation but then I never found you again haha.

EDIT: just saw the picture of you in the article, yep definitely spotted ya haha. Nice!

Opening Day was a blast, for sure. Can't wait to go at some point again sometime in the future.

Re: Sinnoh Confirmed: Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl Officially Announced For Switch

veeflames

I'm actually a big fan of the artstyle they went with for these games. I could never fully appreciate the 3D graphics of Gen VI upwards (frame rate issues and stiff animations), so this new, somewhat minimalist artstyle should be more reminiscent of the past games.

I still say that the remakes of the old games should have visuals more akin to Square Enix's HD-2D. I'm probably in a very small minority with that opinion, but I've always thought that Pokémon shined best in the DS era with pixelated graphics and has struggled a bit in the transition to 3D. With these chibi graphics, though... I do genuinely believe it's close to what I want. Hopefully that extends to the overall quality of the games too.

Re: Nintendo Reveals Splatoon 3, Coming To Switch In 2022

veeflames

I don't think Splatoon 3 is coming too soon. By the time it releases, it would be at the very least 3.5 years out from Splatoon 2's release. Octo Expansion was a very short stop gap between the two games, so that doesn't really count.

Super excited, nonetheless.

Re: Poll: What Was The Best Switch Launch Game (That Wasn't Zelda: Breath Of The Wild)?

veeflames

FAST RMX for me, easily. I wasn't fond of HD Rumble at all until I played this game. Ever since, I've been literally hooked on HD Rumble to the point where I refuse to play HD Rumble intensive games on my Switch Lite.

Oh, and FAST RMX is a superb game. Absolutely fantastic, hectic racing action. Beautiful looking game, too. If you were ever on the fence for this game, I'd easily recommend it.

Re: Random: Switch Owners Are Discovering Just How Frustrating Super Mario Sunshine Can Be

veeflames

@Ghostchip Oh no, don't get me wrong, the other games you listed are fantastic (WW is incidentally my top Zelda game... I think, haha), but there's something about Sunshine that's just very fun to play. Actually, it's not "something," it's EXACTLY what you said: running around with FLUDD and zipping through levels is quite thrilling and reminds me of how I zip around kingdoms in Odyssey (one of the best games on Switch, by the way). I'm usually not the biggest fan of water-themed games or levels, but Sunshine is a rare exception just because of how fun it is to collect Shines and explore its many levels. I do think the controls are a little bit loose though, which is rather obvious if you come from Galaxy/2 or Odyssey. They're tight and responsive 92% of the time, but with the remaining 8% I'd swear Mario's momentum is either too little or too much and I end up unintentionally hitting some object or something along the lines.

I'm liking the blue coin hunt so far, but I'd imagine I'll treat it just like I treated the Korok seeds in BOTW; find as much as I can, but not be bothered enough to find all of them. Keeps a lot of pressure off my shoulders that way, haha!

Re: Random: Switch Owners Are Discovering Just How Frustrating Super Mario Sunshine Can Be

veeflames

Oh yeah, that does remind me of a jank moment I had with Sunshine. I'll try and post a video of it here when I got the time, but basically I literally got trapped within one of those red spiked stalks at the windmill in Bianco Hills and watched Mario hopelessly lose a life (from full health) with absolutely nothing I can do about it. It was funny because while his life meter slowly kept on depleting, I tried as much as I could to break free from the stalk but to no avail (my "SUNSHINE NO DON'T DO THIS TO ME" screams as I try to break free didn't help, that's for sure). I could've been mad about it, but it was actually just low-key funny.

Ah, Sunshine. Never change...

Re: Random: Switch Owners Are Discovering Just How Frustrating Super Mario Sunshine Can Be

veeflames

Lol idk, Super Mario Sunshine, with its apparent rushed development, is still extremely fun. It translates extremely well on the Switch. As I continue to play the 3DAS version, I consistently have a massive grin plastered on my face (except when I'm playing those FLUDD-less levels... yeah, those ones are still broken as all hell) and am continually reminded why Sunshine is without a doubt my best game on the GameCube.

But yeah, I always kept on saying the game was janky on the GameCube, and its just as janky on the Switch. God help me if I break my Switch due to those FLUDD-less levels.....

Re: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Lands On Switch On 18th September, And It's A Limited-Time Thing

veeflames

LOL whoa whoa, what's with the conspiracy theories about the game's availability? I too would like to know what Nintendo was thinking when planning their release schedules, but I'd wager the pandemic has something to do with it.

I mean sure, you can ask "well, what about the eShop version?" And the best thing I can say is that they want to be consistent with the release across both the physical and digital versions. I really don't know, bit I don't think anyone does.

I'll be picking up the game anyway so maybe I'm not too bothered by it, but it is an interesting situation.

Re: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Lands On Switch On 18th September, And It's A Limited-Time Thing

veeflames

Lol will be refreshing links all day to pre-order this bad boy.

Still disappointed Super Mario Galaxy 2 isn't included. It was strangely omitted from the Direct altogether as well... no mention of it whatsoever. Quite ridiculous to not, at the very least, acknowledge one of the best games of all time on a broadcast that celebrates Mario's 35th anniversary and all its highlights.

Re: PlatinumGames Has No Idea If Star Fox Zero Will Be Ported To Switch

veeflames

I'd love a port of this game, actually (Star Fox Zero: Point One or something). Complete with an online multiplayer mode, an overhaul of the control system so that it's not as divisive, and more planets, if any.

One of the most underrated games on the Wii U. It totally deserves a second chance, but Nintendo would have to be smart with it.

Re: Paper Mario: The Origami King Leaked Online Ahead Of Next Week's Release

veeflames

OK, BUT HAVE YOU GUYS HEARD THE FINAL BOSS THEME (I'm referring to what might be the first phase of the final boss as I hear there are multiple phases) THOUGH?!

I am literally at a loss for words. It's like it's not even a Paper Mario game any more. Hell, it reminds me of a certain epic-sounding piece from FE3H.

My God, I've never been so hyped and so.. meh about a game before, haha! Everything aside from the battle system and busted economy ranges from good to brilliant.

The music slaps so hard, though... it's NOT even funny.

Re: How Well Do You Know Nintendo Hardware?

veeflames

@Heavyarms55 exactly this. I would have gotten an 8/10 if not for the question about the best selling "console." I clicked Wii thinking of TV consoles and not even seeing the Nintendo DS option.

I had absolutely no idea about the N64's 3-letter code and the designer of the SNES for NA markets, though.

Re: Random: Cadence Of Hyrule Guitarist Jokingly Petitions For Time Travel Cheater Stamp In Animal Crossing

veeflames

@Kalmaro Well, when you ask why people are complaining about others doing so so and so, you won't find a good answer if the number of "people" is small.

So it's like me saying that I'm getting worked up over something that not a whole lot of people are saying in the first place. I don't have the numbers either (hence why I asked ya), but I still wouldn't say the numbers are that high.

Re: Random: Cadence Of Hyrule Guitarist Jokingly Petitions For Time Travel Cheater Stamp In Animal Crossing

veeflames

@Kalmaro Nah, I'm saying it's not really a widespread complaint. People are gonna be people and say whatever they're gonna say. We don't have to understand why a few individuals are making that complaint, but we don't have to make it seem like it's a widespread thing.

And again, we have to be careful about who's "getting up in arms" with this kind of thing. I wouldn't say people just saying they're not in favor of time travelling is people "getting up in arms" about how people play a single player game, to be honest.

Re: Random: Cadence Of Hyrule Guitarist Jokingly Petitions For Time Travel Cheater Stamp In Animal Crossing

veeflames

@Kalmaro
"Why are people getting mad at how other people enjoy their single player experience?"
Well... who exactly is getting mad about this? In here, users are just expressing their thoughts on time travelling. I don't favor time travelling (not even in the slightest, really). I won't stop others from time travelling, but that doesn't stop me and others from saying what we think about travelling. We see it as taking away from the slow-burn nature of the game, nothing more.
Haha, c'mon Kalmaro. Based on your comments from previous articles, you of all people on NLife should know this

"I keep hearing how Time Travelers are ruining the game for everyone but no one can really show how, its just speculation. The stalk economy is still the same as ever, what else are people freaking out about? Did I just miss something?"
In the same vein, who said that travelers are ruining the game for everyone? I've not seen a whole lot of users saying this... and that would be a weird argument to make, really.

Re: Feature: Best Nintendo Switch Graphics - The Most Beautiful Switch Games

veeflames

@Jshores Senua's Sacrifice? Mm, not too sure about that. While I enjoyed the game a lot, it was definitely blurry in a lot of cases, and sometimes it reminded me of a GameCube game. That didn't really lessen my experience while playing the game, but even I can admit that the Switch version of Senua's Sacrifice won't be winning a lot of Best Graphics awards.

Honestly, I've played a ton of games that look amazing on the Switch, especially in handheld mode. But the one game that will forever stand out to me when discussing best-looking games on the Switch is ARMS. That game looks fantastic. It is literally my best looking Switch game by a mile. The detail in literally everything. The charm of the characters. The rock solid 60FPS. The animations don't seem janky in any way whatsoever, giving the whole game a sense of "natural" that you really don't see in any other video game. At least not to the degree of ARMS, I would say.

Games like BoTW and Astral Chain, and even Super Mario Odyssey look amazing. But ARMS? One of the best-looking games I've probably played this generation, and for good reason.

Re: Final Super Mario Maker 2 Update Arrives April 22nd, Adds World Maker Mode, Frog Suit, And Koopalings

veeflames

No extra game styles? Not gonna lie, seeing as this is the last major update, that's pretty disappointing. It was never promised, sure, but with 3D World being the only palette under "Extra Game Styles" and more palettes fitting in the space next to 3D World's, I was honestly expecting more game styles to come in future updates. Sadly, that seems unlikely at this point. Ah well....

That being said though, this update looks fantastic. All the new (well, mostly returning) items look like it'll spice things up a lot, and that World Maker looks fantastic (shame it's only SMW-styled, though). The laser-firing Mechakoopas look sick, too.

I don't actually own this game, but I do watch an unhealthy amount of SMM2 players on YouTube. It'll be fun to see them react to this update and explore it as well. 4/22 can't come soon enough!

EDIT: For some reason, I have a sudden urge to get the game so bad. But if I'm already watching others play the game (and really enjoying it)... I don't know. I've always been having ideas for SMM levels in my head, but that never really pushed me to get the game. Hggn. I'll probably think about it more like a logical human being before I make the splurge.

Re: Mario Makes For An Excellent First-Person Shooter, And You Can Play It For Free

veeflames

Gotta say, I've died at the same spot (the large jump over the pit after the stairs) about 4 times now... not super proud about that. I'm taking my time and exploring the world, so when I get to that point and somehow fail to make the jump... I've wasted an average of 8 minutes. I'm not going to reach the goal without seeing every nook and cranny of this game, though.

It's a well-made game, honestly. Best you try it out before you can't.

Re: The End Of An Era: E3 2020 Is Officially Cancelled

veeflames

@NEStalgia Heh, indeed. The ebolavirus would literally dash your insides to gallons of blood. And it would do it within the span of 2 days to 2 weeks. If you recovered, you were really lucky. Because that was a huge, monumental "if." LOL it was really funny, because I moved back to the US during the peak of the crisis and developed a fever (one of the first symptoms of hemorrhagic fever) during the first leg of the trip. You can imagine how insane my worry was when we landed and had to line up and they had the airport officials point that temperature-measuring gun thing to our heads. Just imagine if they pulled me out for "concerns." I'll admit, the sheer panic and raw human emotion and instinct would be hilarious to observe, but thankfully that never happened. Phew.

But anyway, I guess you're right with this having a significant impact on E3, but I'd wager gaming companies know that their fans and the gaming media see the weeks of early June as their Christmas come early and are pretty much expected to surpass any expectations from them. In a sense, E3 was the time to cater to the hands that feeds them, and it was a set, definite time. While I love Nintendo Directs, the fact of the matter with video conferences is that we never know when they're coming next. Maybe in a month. Maybe in more than half a year (current Direct drought, anyone)? And so we expect the gaming giants to tell us what they're working on, but we don't know when they would.

I do think the organizers of E3 do have some restructuring to do. If the gaming giants see that they survive without E3, it's indeed a no-brainer that they'll put less resources and time into future conferences. I wouldn't mind an all-digital conference with showrooms for the press only in the future, but I do think E3 needs the companies to stay at the table, and I'd also wager the companies would want E3 to stay as, if done right, is free advertisement for their upcoming games. Perilous times for E3, but I hope they pull through.

Re: The End Of An Era: E3 2020 Is Officially Cancelled

veeflames

@ThanosReXXX ahem Ebolavirus would love to have a word with you. And unlike the coronavirus, contracting the ebolavirus was most DEFINITELY a death sentence. As someone who lived near the epicenter of the outbreak, you bet the panic and the precaution was real. I lived through the rumors, information, precautions, and total dread.

Thing is, the world didn't freak out about the Ebolavirus like it's doing for the coronavirus. You're pretty much not going to die if you get the coronavirus, honestly speaking. Of course, that doesn't mean you should throw away your common sense or go to places when you don't need to, but there is a sense of unnecessary panic here and there. Heck, with this article's language of "end of an era," there's the subtle implication that this new crown virus is a beast that all will bow down to, rather than explaining clearly that E3 is only being cancelled due to precautionary measures.

And it's not just Nintendo Life (of course not, heck Nintendo Life isn't really guilty of anything). ABC has been going rather nuts with the coronavirus, treating it like it's the new AIDS. I don't really follow any other news outlets, but I'd imagine the coverage is similar. What does this mean? For one, people go out and hoard vital needs like toilet paper, isopropyl alcohol, facemasks, fever medication and all, leaving places like hospitals who would love those needs hanging and scrambling to get them. When someone coughs in a class, the rest of the students begin to panic, and the teacher may even cancel class (a coworker told me that happened to her recently). And then there's the misinformation and conspiracy theories. And loss of common decency for the fellow human being. All for a virus that's not even close to something like ebolavirus or even the flu.

Again, I'm not downplaying the common sense response to the coronavirus. Yes, please wash your hands. Yes, don't go out of you don't have to. Yes, stay inside if you're sick. Those are all great responses to the virus. There are indeed valid concerns regarding the virus. But I don't think people are liking the whole "doom-and-gloom" vibes that the media and influencers are trying to portray. We will get through this, no doubt about that. Fortunately for us, we're on our way to making vaccines and treatments for the virus, a personal favorite of mine being the mRNA vaccine from Moderna. Should work wonders when it's finally available for the general public. But for now? Let's keep the discussion of the virus at a purely factual level rather than from an emotional level. That's my take.

Re: The End Of An Era: E3 2020 Is Officially Cancelled

veeflames

... End of an era? C'mon now. I don't think it's that bad. There will most likely be an E3 2021.

I don't think they should've cancelled it when it's still some few months away, but ah well. Rather disappointing, honestly. E3 is that one event where we gamers come together for one thing: to be excited for new and upcoming releases - and new hardware, too - that we will all get to enjoy. Shame that that's not going to be a reality this year, so now we only have video presentations to scratch that itch of ours.

I do hope everyone stays safe, though. This virus doesn't have the right to spread like it's doing right now and just needs to die a horrible death already.

Re: It Looks Like Cooking Mama: Cookstar Will Be Released On The Switch Next Month

veeflames

It's really interesting seeing how this series has gained a cult following where the interest for the series has never really died. I too loved the first two or so games on the DS, after knocking them off as shovelware trash from the title screen alone. There was just something charming about chopping sweet potatoes or dicing cucumbers in the games that kept me coming back a lot.

Speaking of.. I'd actually love to see Cooking Mama as a playable fighter in Smash Bros. Ultimate...
