Oh no, Paper Mario: The Origami King has been leaked online less than a week out from its official release. This has been confirmed by a well-known dataminer over on Twitter, who is now sifting through the Switch game's files.
Gaming Reinvented adds to this - revealing how late-game content is already circulating on the worldwide web:
"We’ve checked and found what seems to be spoilers for the final boss, as well as the last dungeon of the game and various other late game content."
There's also footage being uploaded to streaming platforms, so you might want to avoid using any search terms related to Paper Mario.
Surprisingly, this isn't the first time a Paper Mario game has been leaked. Nintendo accidentally made Paper Mario: Color Splash available on the Wii U eShop two weeks ahead of schedule back in 2016.
If you'd like to see direct footage of Paper Mario: The Origami King - we advise you stick to Nintendo's Treehouse broadcast, which aired on its YouTube channel yesterday.

Leaks are something normal nowadays.
But some companies are better in keeping things secret.
Why aren't there leaks with footage of BotW2 ?!?!?
I eagerly await the upcoming review bombing and culture war surrounding this game.
Can't really be much to spoil?
Let me guess, the final boss is Bowser, what a twist!
@Zuljaras Because BotW2 never existed. 😱
I don’t know why this game is getting so much hate. Nintendo still made that “Paper Mario” charm while trying something different. Preordered. Can’t wait to try it out!
@Cosats I’m so deeply grieved that Paper Mario offends you.
@Apportal Subcultures of fandom have a segment of every community primed to hate every new thing. I've generally quit listening to user reviews on enthusiast sites.
@Apportal Your comment has nothing to do with what I said.
What is there to spoil anyway? That when you reach the end of the game you get access to a BotW 2 demo? Otherwise who cares? Lol
@RazumikhinPG There's plenty to spoil for people who like Paper Mario?
Like geez dude, get out of your "only what I like matters" greenhouse.
@Bl4ckb100d You’re actually missing the mark here. For most Mario games the story is negligible and only exists for the gameplay. In the Paper Mario Series, story was the central focus until Sticker Star happened.
It’s funny though, the PM games with less story are also the ones with an inferior gameplay loop.
I wasn't aware there was apparently controversy surrounding this game. Well, I'm looking forward to it. I actually bought a used copy of Color Splash yesterday. I've never played it, but I don't want to skip an entry and just go straight to Origami King.
@Giygas_95 hope you enjoy colour splash. I really enjoyed it. A lot of polish and charm throughout.
@Cosats you’re a hater with nothing better to do than to shame the Nintendo Life writers who worked hard on the article saying it was “pointless”. Go spend some quality time with your wife instead of shaming a Nintendo article that 50 people will see.
@Muddy_4_Ever I agree. The only reviews I listen to now are these, Nintendo Life, they seem to get it right most of the time.
@Giygas_95 Color Splash gets way to much hate. It’s not as good as its predecessors, but it’s still an inventive and interesting game. Hope you enjoy it!
@Bl4ckb100d My uncle works at Nintendo, and he said it’s going to be Olly! 😯
@ImagineerNik with other Mario games, no, but Paper Mario actually has a story, so there may be some to spoil.
the battle system is kinda meh, no levelling up system either. its good, it just doesnt feel like paper mario of old
@Apportal @1UP_MARIO I've sort of come to accept that we're not getting any more Thousand Year Door caliber games in the series. Nintendo just switched directions with the series entirely.
Despite the hate for Sticker Star, I actually enjoyed it a lot. With Color Splash and Origami King, it's gonna feel weird having two new Paper Mario games to play back to back like this.
@Giygas_95 Sticker Star is my least favorite of the series, but it is still so much better than other RPGs. It gets way to much hate.
Won't name anybody but some stores have been selling this game.
@Richnj Culture war? Which cultures are going to “war” about Paper Mario?
@Bl4ckb100d Unless its a M&L thing where he gets possessed that's highly unlikely
@1UP_MARIO I LOVED the look and feel of the game. It was also hilarious. Unfortunately, like Sticker Star, there were required (and sometimes obtuse) required progression points. This made a wonderful game feel frustrating.
Going to avoid more gameplay. Can't wait for the 17th. Already preloaded this game
@TG16_IS_BAE It was a joke about modern games getting leaks and the fallout that follows. Don't worry about it.
@Bl4ckb100d Final boss is a stapler or a paper shredder I bet.
@Richnj Got it! Hard to get jokes across text without a 😅
After that stream yesterday, I can think of more interesting games to play like perhaps watching paint dry. It’s a shame, I was hoping it would be a return to form but nope, looks terrible.
OK, BUT HAVE YOU GUYS HEARD THE FINAL BOSS THEME (I'm referring to what might be the first phase of the final boss as I hear there are multiple phases) THOUGH?!
I am literally at a loss for words. It's like it's not even a Paper Mario game any more. Hell, it reminds me of a certain epic-sounding piece from FE3H.
My God, I've never been so hyped and so.. meh about a game before, haha! Everything aside from the battle system and busted economy ranges from good to brilliant.
The music slaps so hard, though... it's NOT even funny.
With most (if not all) of the RPG aspects convincingly and permanently gutted from a series that was once called Mario RPG 2, there's some solace to be found in finally leaving it behind rather than hoping for a return to the glory days. 2020 brought us RPG fans many joys through heavy hitters like Trials of Mana, Final Fantasy 7R, and Xenoblade Chronicles: DE, but, regrettably, Paper Mario won't be joining them. To echo the sentiment from a certain headline, Paper Mario: The Origami King doesn't want to replicate the games of the past. The series has long since moved on from its RPG roots, and internalizing this clarification is important. The best we older fans can hope for are ports of the first two games, it seems, and that's okay ... assuming Nintendo eventually delivers.
This game looked good until they said there was no XP. Come on Nintendo
GameXplain uploaded a video on YouTube with the opening cutscene. 😭
Do these leakers just not care or think they're so smart, they'll never get caught? And I can't wait for the banhammer to come down on the streamers and then watch them turn around and cry "my career! My console! Not fair!"
"How will this unfold?" Boo.
Paper Mario is controversial lol
@Apportal because the battle system is pointless and very easy. There is literally no reason to take part in any battles.
@Nookingtons
Game's to hard, huh? 🥺
@kobashi100
So you don't necessarily have to battle, if you don't want to. I don't see the problem with this.
@Richnj will they be serving Popcorn at the concession stands?
The Paper Mario community is what will ultimately kill the series, I'm convinced half the hate against color splash is by people who never even played it and just made assumptions. It DOES have progression in battles via increased paint, its just not every other RPG we have been playing for the last 30 years and that's ok.
@Blizzia I don't see why you're trying to attack me. I said there's not a lot to spoil in a Paper Mario game, surely no one plays Mario games expecting a LotR type of plot. If someone told you the ending of Mario 64, do you think it would ruin the experience at all? I can't imagine there will be anything in the game that you really can't learn ahead or it will ruin your experience of the game, but I'm happy to be proved wrong.
I've had this game pre-ordered since the announcement and am really looking forward to play it. Big Paper Mario fan here, loved Sticker Star and 64.
Still know there's nothing revealed in the leaks that's going to make me cancel the pre-order or not want to play the game.
You sound easily aggravated.
@Nookingtons
So there is nothing more to do than watching a few cutscenes and sprinkling confetti? 🤔
That subheading unfold pun is probably going to be in the game itself. If it is, can we call that a leak as well?
@RazumikhinPG
> Assuming I'm attacking you
> Big fan, preordered since day minus 10.000
> can't convince you to cancel pre-order, no sir
> "you must be fun at parties/you sound easily aggravated/you mad bro?"
Checks out.
Doesn't matter if the plot is LotR-style or not. The plot is the plot man. Anybody who cares just a little bit about storytelling and stories would be angry if they got spoiled.
Also, I'm perfectly calm and not the least bit aggravated. Also, replying to you and telling you that your priorities (story in paper mario doesn't matter, so spoiling/being spoiled is fine) don't necessarily align with that of everybody else.
Also, in general, spoilers are always bad. Just assume that spoilers are gonna suck for somebody. Be the plot LotR or not, or the features revolutionary or bland.
The more I hear about this game, the less I care about it overall. I’m sure it’ll be fine somewhat but it’s a shame they abandoned the older formula that worked so well in the past.
Oh well at least we have the Mario and Luigi games to keep us entertai- oh wait, those were cancelled.
Maybe Super Mario RPG?
Nope.
Well @#%!
@MrBlacky that's cool for you then dude but for me I want the series to go back to its RPG roots. The lack of any challenge on this game is the main reason I am not buying.
AGAIN!? Man, I'm just about wondering if this 'leak' is intentional for these later Paper Mario as a marketing stunt. Either way, I guess we'll see if it's any good earlier than usual. Crossing my fingers that the final boss music is good, at the very least.
Edit: HOLY ***** I JUST FOUND A BIT OF IT AND IM LOVING IT
@kobashi100
So I guess you never bought a Paper Mario game? Because none of them were challenging, besides at maybe one or two occasions.
@MrBlacky I started on N64 you joker! Played them all up to sticker star. Skipped colour splash and will probably skip this. The series is basically an adventure game for kids to enjoy now.
Not like Mario games ever really have much of a story. Mario RPG was probably the best one story-wise and that one wasn't even developed by Nintendo.
@kobashi100
Okay, but you said you won't play this because of no challenge, but you played the older ones, which also weren't challenging most of the time. 🤷
@Apportal you’re a hater with nothing better to do than to shame the Nintendo Life writers who """""""""""""""""""""worked hard""""""""""""""""""" on the article saying it was “pointless”.
Ah yes, i love very short Articles that copy+paste the same thing everyone else said, im sure they worked VERY HARD on it. : )
@Blizzia if you could predict what I was going to reply, then maybe just stay quiet?
I watched one of the twitch streams, and I just say, the treehouse people did a horrible job making the game look interesting. Thre are so many more interesting things in other regions, (the one I saw was the desert), but they insisted on showing the tutorial region, which is almost never interesting. NIntendo Treehouse also usually odesn't limit themselves to the tutorial area either, so I don't know whats up with the boring tutorial level they showed.
@RazumikhinPG Nah, that's silly.
Instead of complaining about how annoying online discussions about Paper Mario can be I will mention that it’s kind of gross that this article links to the leaked content.
I wonder if they kill Mario 2 hours in and then you continue to play as one of bowsers henchman, chasing and killing Zelda!
@MrBlacky @Bl4ckb100d Paper Mario definitely wasn't challenging. I remember renting the original from blockbuster and beating it over the weekend. And I was involved with sports which meant that I wasn't playing it all weekend.
@Bl4ckb100d you play it for the plot?
Unless this reviews as a "must have" for the Switch, I am probably going to pass. I have all of the 3ds PMs and then also Color Splash- really have not finished them. I am good on Paper Mario for quite some time.
@Nookingtons I hope you get your switch locked up lol it will happen at some point
@idrawrobots Why is it gross? Some people want to see the content early, no harm in that.
Regardless I preordered on the eshop.i could careless about other peoples opinions about games I play what I like.besides if I listened to peoples opinions I would have missed alot of good games
A new series tradition, lol.
@Dancampulung That was because they have a review copy of the game so they were allowed by Nintendo to show that.
No!! Now I must know what is being leaked...
Well, well, calm down.... at least it's not as bad as Color Splash right? That game was fully playable by anyone accidentally when it became avaliable for pre-load on September 2016.
Game looks trash anyway who cares, color splash is better at this point thsn this game
@Tonyo Really? I think this game looks way better than color splash. Did you really enjoy having to use cards to battle?
@CalTonTheRobot They'd better.
Stupid pirates, also this is enabled by The Homebrew crowd, so annoying, however Nintendo really did kind of dropped the ball on securing the original switch.
Honestly though, I believe that the og Paper Mario and the ones after that should be separated in two sub series. The first 2 games (and techically SPM as a spinoff) as the Mario Story Series, and the games starting with Sticker Star as the Paper Mario series. This way, everyone can stop complaining about the new games to the old, as they shouldn't be compared to each other. Nintendo will probably not make another Mario Story game, unless they have a change of heart. On a related note, consider the fact that Origami King was probably in development during the Alpha Dream Bankruptcy, so it is still possible that I could be wrong about the MS series not returning.
@Bl4ckb100d nahhh the paper Mario games are usually more meta than that. Maybe its a folded up or strategy guide
@1UP_MARIO This made me chuckle 😄😄
Have people forgotten these and other Nintendo games are for humans with single digit ages, possibly into the early teens?
@Scollurio 😂😂😂
@NambanRonin I can't speak about this one as I've never played it (obviously), but I think the defining trait of great Nintendo games is that they're super fun whether you're a toddler scratching the surface, or a grown man wanting to engage in the more in-depth mechanics 😃
Games like those, very approachable and accessible, but at the same time as deep as you want them to, are probably the best and the most difficult to pull off, I think!
@Crockin Right! It’s always tripped me out to read about it.
If we can't have a real paper Mario rpg can we get the good ones on the switch? My Wii can't seem to run Gamecube games anymore.
It is really funny that players hate The Origami King for not being an RPG, while there is no real RPG in the Mario franchise.
This game is good fun, not really played a paper mario before but i'm really enjoying it. There is no xp so far but so what? If that means less forced grinding then that's a good thing! Most RPGS get so grind heavy it spoils the game.
There is new footage.... don't watch it.
Is saying, there is new footage ....watch it.
That is what advertising does.
The problems with this game being leaked are twofold.
Not going to watch the spoilers. It's gonna be paper mario. It will be lighthearted fun. It will be allright!
@Zuljaras Because BOTW2 isn't finished + shipped, unlike Color Splash and Origami King when they leaked.
Although a role-out of a AAA title; my wallet is safe and sound on this one.
I’m convinced the original two games, despite being beloved, sold horribly. Which is the only reasoning I can see to so boldly take the series further into increasingly casual affairs. Aesthetically the game and series as a whole are great, but I think that’s the sum of my interests with it these days.
@CromAstronomy nintendo killed paper mario, not us. Never gonna buy another pm game until they go back to what made the games great. Good thing I'm not alone in this
@NambanRonin by your logic all games should be for kids and teens. Since I've played Zelda since I'm 4 years old Breath of the Wild should be for children too! Dont be obtuse.
@BlackenedHalo you are just trolling. Super Mario RPG, and the first 2 paper marios are RPGs. I consider SPM an action/platform/RPG in line with Zelda 2. The very foundation of Paper Mario is the RPG genre
That sucks considering the series needs the sales. I try to stay away from leaks that soil game endings or final boss.
@Apportal Because a certain subset of fans consider themselves to be the mostly fanly fans of all fans because they really liked the first two games, and they want every subsequent game in the series to be identical to those games, and also they have nothing better to do with their time and are miserable humans so they go online and complain about not having their entertainment needs met.
Why can't people enjoy games anymore, this game looks beautifull. But there is always a, But...
Enjoy games
Just do it.
@EdwardElric
I prefer the term "stolen with permision".
@TG16_IS_BAE People who grew up with Sticker Star and people who like the originals more. If anyone played them all it's dead easy to tell when the quality took a steep drop.
@BAN It wouldn't be so bad if the only other Mario RPG series didn't just die. Bug Fables is alright but if Kirby's Epic Yarn was the ONLY way forward in the Kirby games, Kirby fans would complain too.
@PALversusNTSC why people who pays a 100 dollars bill for their internet service provider cant just pay up and enjoy their service when their speed drops by 90% on a daily basis and customer service hangs up on them when they call to report it? Just suck it up!! Pay, the company needs uour money!!
Same stupid logic. Not gonna enjoy this s***fest and Nintendo wont get my money for a suboar product, and I will continue to be vocal about it. Nintendo wont just get positive feedback that allows then to destroy more game series forever.
@Fulgor_Astral I’ve been playing Nintendo games since probably before you were even born, and even though they occasionally drop some turds, I can safely say that I’ve been burned MUCH less by them than I have by most other developers/publishers. But even so, I buy games with my eyes wide open. Because I’m not mentally deficient so I can judge for myself if a game is worth my money before I buy it.
But even if a developer does burn me, one more thing I can confidently say is that the absolute last thing you’ll ever see me do on this planet is go online and whine and complain about a video game developer not meeting my demands.
@BAN Yooo lmao. Real gamer right here, id give 3 upvotes if I could.
@BAN good for you.
If you dont complain companies wont listen and you will keep receiving turds like this one.
I dont know about your age, my very first system was an atari 2600 and by the age of 5 i already had a nes, and in 1992, a snes. Been here for a long time too, and Nintendo has been doing things like this since the n64 days, and as many others, I'm not taking this anymore. Will the time that I have lived and been playing nintendo games give me more credibility to you? Hahaha
Stop being a fanboy, and if you wanna keep buying underwhelming experiences, hey, more power to you. I'm not shutting up. I work with data, and data can be retrieved in ways you can't imagine. Negative feedback is data, data can be used in decision making that even the people at Nintendo will use to make good games eventually. If we allow only positive fb nothing ever changes. Does this give me more credibility to you, mr. Old guy who has been playing games since the beginning of time? Gosh, why is negative feedback something you Nintendo fans take so personal?
@Fulgor_Astral If you’re actually that old and you’re trying this hard to come off as an edgy 15 year old, then you need to re-evaluate your life choices.
@Ardisan Oh yeah because that’s TOTALLY what I was going for. It couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the fact that this d-bag is telling everyone that their opinion on this game is based solely on blind allegiance to Nintendo and general lack of experience. Super cool reply, though.
@BAN a good answer for an ignorant of the topics I mentioned hahaha. Just write off the other person. Thought you had more arguments. Oh well
