@tourjeff I agree with all that. I would have preferred that they release gen u last year, and I don't think it should be sold at full price, but I'm not going to complain. I'm still happy it is being released here and am happy to have a MH on switch to play local multi-player. My only fear is that poor sales of generations u will stop Capcom from making a new one for switch. But I actually think that there is already a new switch MH in development. I have nothing to back that up with, but it seems crazy to me that they wouldn't. Japan loves portable MH.
@AlternateButtons I buy many games, but I occasionally download some roms of older games. There are many which can no longer be bought except by paying ridiculous prices second hand. And the original publisher does not make any money from that anyway.
@Francema well there is usually a barebones story about monsters attacking a village, but for the most part you're killing them to make weapons and armor out of them. I thought the same as you the first time I played MH. Why am I killing these poor creatures. Then you get into the game, they attack you and you respond. I wouldn't analyze it too much, as the game never takes itself very seriously. If you're looking for a deep story with complex motivations and moral questions, you won't find that in MH. What you will find is an amazing action game with deep combat mechanics. You might just as well ask, what did all those poor Goombas do to get squashed by that nasty, vicious Mario?
@SKTTR people complained about MH being on the 3ds too and how horrible it looked, blah blah blah And I enjoyed the hell out of those games because the gameplay is so good and meeting up with friends to play together is awesome. That's why I'm excited about mhgu
@tourjeff it's a port of a game that was never previously released in English and that adds a ton of content that we couldn't play before without learning Japanese. I certainly hope Capcom is making a new MH game for switch but I'm glad to be able to play this in the meantime.
@Blizzia yeah, I hear you. My experience has been that some of the optional bosses or tricky platforming sections seem maddeningly impossible when you first encounter them, and it's better to keep exploring and finding upgrades. You can come back to them later and you'll find them much more manageable.
@Blizzia yeah, this game is already huge and there's still more coming!! I still haven't beaten the third colosseum trial yet and some of the dlc bosses, but I need to take a break from it. I've been playing it a bit obsessively for the past couple weeks.
@Blizzia the DLC is hidden inside the game. It's not separate from the main game at all but you need to reach certain points in the game before you'll be able to find it. Honestly though, it's too well hidden in my opinion. I stumbled upon some of it but some of it I still hadn't found after completing the game. I kept thinking I would unlock it at some point but I got to the very end and there was no sign of it anywhere. I had to look it up in a guide, which bugs me a little. The dlc does add some very difficult extra challenges, but there were parts of the original game that were pretty dang hard too!
@N64SNESU I'm exactly the same. I just can't enjoy Smash. I even got both the wii u and 3ds games to play with friends and I just got bored with them quickly. I find the mechanics too slow and floaty. they just don't click with me. It's clear from the competitive scene that there is a lot of depth, but I just don't find it fun. I used to really enjoy Street Fighter games too by the way.
I've tried to get into Smash but I just can't. The mechanics have never clicked with me. I find it kind of fun to play with a group of friends for maybe an hour tops, but I get bored with it quickly. I can see the appeal as a competitive game, but I know I'd never be anywhere near good enough to play competitively.
@Francema Aside from the actual battles the game is mostly upgrading armor and weapons (there are a lot of different skill upgrades to consider) and there is also gathering resources. I personally enjoy the depth available and can spend a lot of time just checking armor and weapons stats, but I guess that's not for everyone. The gameplay in the battles is truly great though imo. I've had many of my most memorable and intense gaming moments playing MH.
@Agramonte Yes, it's a port, but Generations Ultimate was never released in the west while in Japan it was already on 3ds (MHXX) before the switch version was released, which could explain the lukewarm reception of the Switch version there.
For me, having Generations Ultimate on Switch is worth the full price because it adds a lot of new content over Generations. And if people are really put off by the price, they can always wait for a sale as it's usually possible to get MH games for half price after a while.
But as you say, regardless of how well it sells, I certainly hope that we will see a brand new MH game on switch at some point.
Man, so much complaining in the comments about the price.
I'll just say that in hours per dollar spent Monster Hunter has always given me wayyyyyy more value than any other series. People are happy to pay $60 for a game they can finish in 10-20 hours. I've put hundreds of hours into every Monster Hunter game I've played and could still go back and play more (in fact I've been doing that with 3U, 4U and Generations in anticipation of this).
If you want to play World on pc, great. But I and many others are very glad Capcom is finally releasing Generations Ultimate on Switch and I plan to enjoy it tremendously
I wonder, are things like Labo, Mario tennis and Kirby really selling well? I'm in the same boat as others here in that I have zero interest in these games so 2018 has been pretty weak for me. (I also won't buy wii u ports that I can easily play again on my wii u if I want to.) I can't really complain though because I still have games to play. (hollow knight, donkey Kong Rabbids dlc, and I'm looking forward to MH generations u. I might get Dark Souls.) but yeah, Last year was amazing. This year not so much.
@Savino As you can tell, I was a big fan of the nes Battletoads. It was packed with so many different game play ideas and for me the difficulty gave it tons of replay value. I never managed to beat it as a kid. I replayed it a few years ago and imo it totally holds up. I agree, among the best games of that era!
@gurtifus I found that stressful in the beginning too, but I was always able to get my geo back when I died, although there were a few close calls. Now that I'm much farther in the game it seems I have more geo than I know what to do with.
@Fake-E-Lee @Stocksy I keep thinking I'm getting close to the end only to discover entirely new areas. This game is enormous.
I found this game frustrating initially but now I'm really enjoying it.
I hope to not use this guide, as I always prefer playing games without consulting a guide. I have no idea what percentage I'm at but I've put in about 40 hours so far.
@Stargazer Yeah, I don't know if there is an intended order, but some items need to be found before you can open up new areas. There are some strange design choices that took me a while to get used to, like not having any map at all for a new area, not even of the rooms you've already been in, until you buy the area map.
I really enjoyed the 3ds and still play it sometimes. Samus Returns was great and I've been going back to MH generations in preparation for Generations Ultimate.
But it makes no sense to me to release a 3ds successor. A switch mini that is portable only (no dock) and about 100 dollars cheaper, I could see that selling a lot though.
@Stargazer how far into the game are you? To be honest I found it frustrating for the first few hours, but it opens up a lot after you get through the first few areas. For me it's a game that requires a lot of patience, especially in the beginning. With so much to explore it can be hard to know where to go next, and you have to get used to a lot of backtracking.
@Bunkerneath I was thinking the same thing. Did you notice the team is even called Matrix Mill?! ! Doesn't anyone else find this extremely creepy? Eventually the line between fantasy and reality could become so blurred it would be almost destroyed completely. Is this really the future people want?
@Dualmask I agree that standing in place and flexing in the middle of a battle with some enormous beast is certainly not logical, but I saw it as part of the quirky charm of MH and after initial frustration with it I sort of grew fond of it
@Dualmask I haven't played world yet but from what many long time fans have said, I feel like I'm not missing out on much.
I agree with you about the pickaxes and gathering but I disagree on the flex after drinking potions. To me it was an essential part of the mechanics of the game. It meant you couldn't just drink potions whenever you want. You had to time it right and make sure you were safe.
This is my favorite Switch exclusive, and I don't normally care for turn based games so that is saying a lot! It's also one of the few games I've 100% finished. I don't usually bother with dlc but it looks pretty extensive in this case and seems well worth the price. I am really looking forward to jumping back into M+R!
@Silly_G I mentioned this article to my dad and he said the same thing. If it's classed as a disorder they can "treat" it. Seriously, how many kids are on medication now just because they're energetic and bored at school?
I guess this won't sell anywhere near what World has sold, but does that matter to Capcom? I'm sure their investment on this was almost nothing and they'll still make a lot of money off it.
@Moon I thought about getting a ps4 or xbox1 just for World, but I think I would have felt the same as you. Somehow it didn't seem that appealing to me, so I'm happy about this announcement. I needed a break from MH anyway. I played it way too much on the 3ds.
@Dogorilla That's an interesting theory. I thought it would have made more sense to release it last year, but maybe you're right.
Anyway, I'll definitely be picking this up since playing locally with friends is what MH is all about for me. I'm also glad I didn't get the Japanese version. I got a bit burned out on MH so the timing of this is ok for me.
It's strange to me how some people here can't seem to accept that the switch is so far a bit disappointing to many people, particularly wii u owners. Personally I never buy ports or remakes unless they offer a substantial amount of new content. If I want to replay the game I'll just play the original again. So for anyone like me, the switch's lineup so far is pretty thin. I can count the switch games that interest me on one hand.
If you're still having a lot of fun with your switch and are happy with the games being released for it then great, but don't act like there aren't people with valid complaints against it.
@Curlynob I've witnessed a store clerk explain to a mother that the game she was about to purchase for her 8-9 year old son included gruesome, explicit violence, including murdering prostitutes, and her response was, "oh well, whatever." as she paid for it and handed it to her kid.
my 2 cents: the big problem is horrible parenting. You take a bunch of kids from toxic home environments, put them together in toxic school environments, where they have no meaningful motivation or meaningful responsibilities, some of them are bound to snap...
@roadrunner343 I just wanted to say, I really appreciated your posts and have a tremendous amount of respect for you. It's so sad to me that the issues of U.S. foreign policy and the completely out of control military industrial complex are ignored by the vast majority of people. I don't see any anti war movement represented in popular or mainstream culture.
Governments always have been and always will be responsible for far more violence and death than individuals or groups acting on their own. The numbers aren't even close. War is a racket.
As a wii u owner with no interest in Splatoon or Xenoblade, the first year for the Switch has been underwhelming for me. Mario + Rabbids and Odyssey were great games, but that was about it for me on the Switch. And I'm a little dismayed at the high prices on the eshop. I refuse to pay $20 or more for indie downloads.
But for anyone who never owned a wii u, or who's really big on portability, yeah, the first year of the Switch has been amazing.
@dres The switch os works great (although it's perhaps a little bland). The news channel is a complete mess and is totally useless to me (and judging by the comments I'm not alone).
Simple, obvious functions that should have been included: separate news feeds for each user account, simple way to view news for a single game
I'm interested in Owlboy, but as others have said, $25 seems a bit much for a retro pixel style 2d platform game. I'd consider $15 a decent price. And since I still have a huge backlog, I may pick it up somewhere down the road if it's on sale, or may consider getting the physical release. Everything's so expensive on the Switch.
@CroRock You are 100 % correct about the importance of portability with MH. For me the series is all about local multi-player and this is why I'm not that excited about MHW.
I too was sure as soon as switch was announced that it would be getting the next MH game and I am baffled by Capcom's lukewarm attitude towards the Switch, especially considering the success of MH in Japan on portable hardware.
I'm sure there will still be a MH game coming for the Switch but, yeah, I'm not too happy with Capcom at the moment.
@Mo_Zing As a huge Monster Hunter fan who's never played a Dark Souls game, I'm curious how they compare. From the descriptions I've read of the combat in Dark Souls, they sound similar (spamming attacks and dodges get you nowhere fast) so I think it's time I give it a try.
MH is all about local multi-player for me. I'm still waiting to see what MH Capcom will bring to the switch in the west but I may break down and get the Japanese xx. Really they'd be insane not to have a MH game in the works for the switch though.
@Giygas_95 Yeah, as much as I enjoyed Breath of the Wild, a few of the design choices held it back from true greatness, in my opinion. After finishing the main story elements I didn't feel any motivation to find all the shrines or do the side quests, nevermind looking for korok seeds.
But the foundation is there for what could be a near perfect game.
They should stick with Breath of the Wild's engine, but add more dungeons, a more developed story, and a better weapons/armor upgrade system (and more interesting side quests). It would be the greatest game ever made.
Well, my picks corresponded exactly with the consensus in every category.
Zelda all the way except during the wii era. I don't remember why exactly but Skyward Sword just didn't do it for me. Still a good game, but probably my least favorite Zelda.
But overall Zelda completely trumps Mario for me. In fact, in my favorite Nintendo series, Mario is a distant third behind Zelda and Metroid.

Re: Editorial: Trying to Play Monster Hunter XX in Japanese on the Nintendo Switch
MH is all about local multi-player for me. I'm still waiting to see what MH Capcom will bring to the switch in the west but I may break down and get the Japanese xx. Really they'd be insane not to have a MH game in the works for the switch though.
Re: Poll: Surprise! A New Zelda Is In Development, But What Do You Want From It?
@Giygas_95 Yeah, as much as I enjoyed Breath of the Wild, a few of the design choices held it back from true greatness, in my opinion. After finishing the main story elements I didn't feel any motivation to find all the shrines or do the side quests, nevermind looking for korok seeds.
But the foundation is there for what could be a near perfect game.
Re: Poll: Surprise! A New Zelda Is In Development, But What Do You Want From It?
They should stick with Breath of the Wild's engine, but add more dungeons, a more developed story, and a better weapons/armor upgrade system (and more interesting side quests). It would be the greatest game ever made.
Re: Poll: Have Your Say on the Best Main Series 3D Mario and Zelda Games
Well, my picks corresponded exactly with the consensus in every category.
Zelda all the way except during the wii era. I don't remember why exactly but Skyward Sword just didn't do it for me. Still a good game, but probably my least favorite Zelda.
But overall Zelda completely trumps Mario for me. In fact, in my favorite Nintendo series, Mario is a distant third behind Zelda and Metroid.
