@Yalaa Yes, I completely agree with you. Everyone who calls themselves a Metroid fan should buy this game.
It's not perfect, but it is a great game in its own right. I'm on my fourth play through. Backtracking to 100% it can be a bit tedious (to me that's the same as any Metroid game). But it's a lot of fun just doing a run through without feeling obligated to pick up everything. I think the game totally holds up with the best of the other 2D Metroids and introduces some interesting new ideas.
Personally I'm fine with it being on 3DS. I like having the 2nd screen, and I think the 3D environments are beautiful. Anyway, Switch is getting Prime 4. Why not a little Metroid goodness on 3DS?
I hope they keep making 2D Metroid games. A Switch port in the future could be cool, or Prime Trilogy HD, leading up to the release of Prime 4. It's such a shame Metroid doesn't sell like the Marios and Zeldas.
As always, I'd rather they take the time to do it properly than rush it out to meet some imposed deadline. And with so much to play these days, what's an extra month? Even if it's not until next year I wouldn't mind.
I haven't played any of the Breath of the Wild dlc yet. I'm waiting for Champion's Ballad to be released before I revisit the game.
I finally was able to pick up this game this week and I'm just loving it. It's classic 2D Metroid with a few nice additions. And it looks absolutely beautiful, especially for a 3DS game. So much care was put into designing the backgrounds and environments, and the 3D effect is awesome. Sometimes while playing I forget what I was doing and just stop to admire the scenery. Magnificent game. I hope we get more like this in the future.
I prefer to not use guides, but if I miss some items I may come back and check this out.
I've already got pretty much all the snes games I want. Still if I see the snes mini in stock somewhere I don't think I'd be able to resist picking one up.
I'm happy for everyone who got one. For those that couldn't, have a bit of patience. Don't turn to the scalpers! I really think Nintendo is doing it right this time.
@Scrummer @millarrp @w00dm4n @Fooligan @ThomasBW84 To everybody asking for free games in NA, the site was updated with 4 games available for gold coins. Finally something to spend gold coins on. I might check out Little Acorns.
I highly recommend Runner 2 to anyone who doesn't have it.
I am baffled by many of Nintendo's decisions but they're certainly not completely out of touch. The switch is doing well, and I honestly expect the snes mini stock situation to be much better than the nes mini. They did announce the snes mini and nes mini are being restocked next year.
@NewAdvent I take it that Samus Returns discount is only on the European mynintendo? I might have actually used that, although I'm planning to get it physical.
@AhabSpampurse The purpose of a rewards program like this is to encourage customers to buy more. They get nice little bonuses and feel glad to have spent more than they otherwise might have. Mynintendo is an utter failure in this regard.
Offering small discounts for downloads of games which most of the customers already own (not to mention games which can often be found cheaper in stores) is just pointless for most Nintendo fans.
Also, many people complain because they remember Club Nintendo, which was way better than mynintendo. (True, some people complained about Club Nintendo too but it was most definitely better than this total waste of a rewards program.)
As a huge MH fan, I really want to like this game, because it's clearly well made, but sadly I think I'll be skipping this one. I've always wanted a more story driven MH game, and this game has tons of charm, but after trying the demo I found the combat system just doesn't do it for me.
Also, one of my favorite aspects of MH games, co-op multiplayer, is completely absent here. And the apparent total lack of challenge, outside of multiplayer battles, is really disappointing. Why should I even care about the strategy when you get so many chances before losing a battle, and even if you lose there are hardly any consequences?
@JaxonH @AcesHigh I'm no fan of Reggie but I'm inclined to agree with you guys here. I don't see why he would make this statement unless they were confident that there will be enough stock in stores so that most everyone, if not absolutely everyone, who wants one will be able to get one. A repeat of the NES mini would be bad business for Nintendo. It would make sense to me that they deliberately limit the number available for pre-order. (And kudos to Toysrus for not even doing preorders at all.)
@DinSquid I've always loved the wii u and still use it regularly. I never understood the hate that it got. I've still got a backlog on it to play through, and it can't be beat for local multiplayer. MK8 and Smash is the perfect game night combo.
@maceng yeah, it's just more than I'm willing to pay for what it currently has to offer. I'm waiting for an improved edition with a lower price and/or bundle.
@Joeynator3000 @BlueOcean I think I could maybe manage with the Japanese text, but the biggest drawback for me would be no save transfer from Gen. I just can't see myself redoing all those early quests.
I'm also cautiously optimistic about a localization of XX sometime next year.
@Joeynator3000 Monster Hunter was going to be my reason to get a Switch. I, like so many, just assumed the next main MH game would be coming to Switch, before MH World was announced.
It's cool that switch is region free but playing MHXX in Japanese just isn't enough for me to justify the expense of a Switch at this point.
I like the concept of the Switch but I don't expect to get one for at least another year. The only games that appeal to me that are currently out are ones I've got on wii u.
And zero backwards compatibility is a big drawback for me. I'm very disappointed that it's not compatible with any older controllers. I feel Nintendo has become much less consumer friendly in the Switch generation. I don't really like the joycons, so it would've been nice if it were at least compatible with the wii u pro controller.
Right now for the cost, the switch is just not worth it to me. I'm not going to spend around $700 (CAN) just to play Mario Kart 8 and Breath of the Wild on the go.
But I'm glad it's doing well and those that have it are enjoying it.
This game looks awesome, but man is that trailer bad. Horrible writing with cliche action movie trailer voice guy, it's just awful. I can't even sit through a minute of that. It's like they're trying too hard to impress the "cool kids".
Anyway, I'm glad to hear the game is as fun as it looks.
@JaxonH I'm impressed with your dedication! I didn't know the save transfer of Gen to XX was possible. It sounds awfully convoluted though, requiring homebrew hacks.
It's amazing to me that there are fans so dedicated to MH that they've essentially stepped in and created a makeshift localization of this game while Capcom remains silent.
Personally I will wait and see. I don't like the idea of paying for XX if Capcom can't even be bothered to localize it, and I don't use homebrews and have no intention of starting over without my Gen save transferred, not to mention using language patches or translators. For me it's all way too much hassle.
Capcom, ffs, localize this for the west gosh dang it! (or Nintendo, step up and do it!) I don't want to play in Japanese or not be able to transfer my save from Gen!!
@BLP_Software Yeah, I understand wanting to take MH forward from a technical standpoint, but I agree with you, from a business standpoint they're making a huge gamble.
They're alienating the people who have grown to love MH as a series for portable hardware, with local multiplayer being one of its most appealing features. And surely they could have anticipated and found a better way to handle the negative reaction that many Nintendo fans would have to their announcement of MH World.
Maybe MH World will really take off in the west, but I'm doubtful, and I can't see it being big in Japan either.
@thesilverbrick MH Gen does have pretty extensive tutorials but they are all completely optional so some people might have overlooked them. MH4U also had some tutorials as part of the first few quests in the solo campaign. There are also several really good MH focused youtube channels to check for more in depth explanations of how the game works.
Basically your average MH quest tasks you with tracking down one or more big monsters and capturing or killing them. Each map has several areas and you just have to check each area until you find the monster.
In the beginning the number of weapon types and items and abilities is very overwhelming, so it's recommended to just focus on 1 or 2 weapons while you get the hang of the game mechanics. It is not a hack and slash game. It requires precise dodging and attacks. Button mashing will get you no where in MH.
Definitely you should give it another shot. It's not for nothing that it has such a dedicated fanbase
I was considering getting the 2DS XL since I hardly used the 3D on my original xl, but I decided to get a New 3DS XL instead last week and I'm so glad I did. Now I never turn the 3D off! I'm amazed how well the super stable 3D works, even playing Mario Kart 7 with gyro controls.
I do like the design of the 2DS XL, but I couldn't be happier with my New 3DS xl. Can't wait for Samus Returns in 3D!!
I'm gonna hold off on buying dlc and see what the next pack is like before buying, since they can't be bought separately. I feel like what's on offer so far is either kind of pointless (the armors) or things that should have been already included with the game (master mode, trial of the sword).
I greatly enjoyed my time with this game but I kind of got burned out on it, and don't feel the desire to come back to it just yet.
I wish the North American edition included the artbook along with the soundtrack. Everything else I don't care about. I think I like the package box design the most out of everything there actually.
I wonder how much the Europeans will have to pay the scalpers to get this.
I'm really tempted to get this as an eventual replacement for my original 3DS XL. I love the sleekness of this design. It's only slightly bigger overall than the small 3DS but with the XL screens.
I won't blame Sony for this MH mess, unless someone can show proof it was their doing, but I do find Capcom's actions baffling. It feels like they're deliberately insulting a big chunk of the MH fanbase.
I was very much looking forward to playing MH on the Switch. Why do they not announce anything about MH on Switch for the West?
I'm all for growing the fanbase of the franchise, but pissing off a big chunk of your existing fanbase seems a strange way to go about it. Would it have been that hard to develop a Switch version of MH World? I'm pretty sure it would've been the version that would sell the most, so from a business perspective I just don't get it.
The least they could do is make a statement about MH on Switch! But they just say "We're focused on MH World for PS4/Xbox1 for a western audience", effectively alienating the huge Japanese fanbase, as well as the Nintendo MH fanbase in the west. Personally, I just can't see MH World being successful under these circumstances, but will that mean the end of the franchise then?
I'd like to play AM2R someday. I'd prefer to play Samus Returns first, but I hope I can still find a way to play AM2R at some point. The creator seems like a cool guy. I don't see why some people are making such a big deal about this. Nintendo did what they had to do, but it seems that he was able to finish the project, from what I've seen elsewhere. And I just can't imagine many Metroid fans skipping Samus Returns because they already played AM2R. If anything I would expect Metroid fans to be eager to compare them. Samus Returns looks to me like a brand new game.
@Caryslan I highly doubt Prime 4 will come out next year, since we didn't even see a trailer for it yet, but other than that I agree with what you're saying.
To me it would've made sense to release this on both 3DS and Switch. Perhaps a Switch port will be released someday, but anyway, I'm super excited for Samus Returns on 3DS!
@FX102A The bottom screen does have a map, which I'm really happy about, and is another big reason why I'm glad this is on 3ds. Check out the gameplay from the tree house reveal. I think this game looks fantastic.
I never played Lords of Shadow so I can't comment on the developer, but I think this looks fantastic and it's the game I'm most excited about now.
I see a lot of people complaining that this isn't on the Switch, and yeah, it would've been nice to have a Switch version, but personally I'm glad this is on the 3DS. One thing no one's mentioned is the second screen. For me playing 2D metroid with the map always available right in front of you is a match made in heaven. Can't wait for this!
@StuOhQ That's exactly what I was thinking. The characters don't look like they move through the environments, but rather like they're pasted onto them.
@crackafreeze I recommend MH4U as the best entry point into the series and the best MH solo experience. I don't know what the online is like at this point though, since most people are probably playing Generations now.
If you want to play multiplayer online you're probably better off going with Generations, but if that's the case I'd just wait until XX comes out. Personally I don't feel like Generations is a good introduction to the series, although others might say otherwise. 4U has a kind of cool little story in single player mode and gradually introduces you to the mechanics that way.
It seemed to me like Generations just throws almost everything at you right away (and also has no story whatsoever). It also has way too many tedious gathering quests (which you don't have to do, but then you have to resort to looking up in a guide which quests are needed to advance to higher ranks).
Having put hundreds of hours into 3U, 4U and Generations, I like 4U the most. Just my opinion.
For this sale price, I'd recommend getting 4U even if you only play the single player mode, and if you like it, get XX when that comes out.
Cross play between 3DS and Switch is a nice addition. I used that feature a lot on MH3U on wii u/3DS and it was awesome playing local multiplayer that way.
In this case I guess it just means those that haven't upgraded to the Switch can still join in the hunt. More inclusivity is always good.
@RedMageLanakyn I'm wondering the same thing. From my experience with MH, it's a series that requires a lot of time and patience to learn the mechanics, but it also provides some really challenging, intense and entertaining battles once you get to the latter part of the game.
What I don't understand is why such an emphasis on tedious gathering missions early on in the game. That needs to be drastically reduced in my opinion cause it really ruined Generations for me.
@Ralizah @DonSerrot Glad to know I wasn't the only one disappointed with Generations. I thought the campaign was horribly designed. It took ages before getting to any battles that were actually challenging and fun.
I hadn't paid any attention to this before, but this summer I'll probably still be holding off on getting a Switch so I may be looking for something to play on 3DS, and this looks great
@ap0001 From Club Nintendo I got Pokemon X, Mario 3D Land, Pikmin 3, Donkey Country Tropical Freeze, Game and Wario plus a ton of VC games, all completely free. Not to mention the wii u deluxe digital promotion got me a bunch of eshop coupons to use on anything I want...
so yeah, mynintendo is just a bit of a disappointment by comparison.

Uma Thurman and Arsene Wenger? Strange references for a review of a Nintendo game. (And was that a subtle dig at Arsenal's fortunes of late? )

Transferring the save that way requires owning a modded 3DS and the Japanese MHX right?

@FX102A The bottom screen does have a map, which I'm really happy about, and is another big reason why I'm glad this is on 3ds. Check out the gameplay from the tree house reveal. I think this game looks fantastic.
Re: Video: Producer Yoshio Sakamoto Dives Deep Into Metroid: Samus Returns On 3DS
Re: Thank Samus, Metroid Prime 4 Has Been Confirmed For Nintendo Switch
Hooray!!! Metroid 2 remake on 3DS!!!
Re: 505 Games Unleashes New Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night E3 2017 Trailer
@StuOhQ That's exactly what I was thinking. The characters don't look like they move through the environments, but rather like they're pasted onto them.
Re: Capcom Kicks Off a Massive Sale on the North American Wii U and 3DS eShops
Re: Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects - May 2017
@Dakt "No way man! We're gonna keep on rockin forever! Forever!....forever..."
Well, time to get back to playing Link to the Past... not kidding
Re: Capcom Unleashes Debut Trailer and Details on Monster Hunter XX for Nintendo Switch
Re: Editorial: Monster Hunter and Nintendo Switch Are a Match Made in Heaven
@RedMageLanakyn I'm wondering the same thing. From my experience with MH, it's a series that requires a lot of time and patience to learn the mechanics, but it also provides some really challenging, intense and entertaining battles once you get to the latter part of the game.
What I don't understand is why such an emphasis on tedious gathering missions early on in the game. That needs to be drastically reduced in my opinion cause it really ruined Generations for me.
I'm wondering if anyone here can comment on XX.
Re: Editorial: Monster Hunter and Nintendo Switch Are a Match Made in Heaven
@Ralizah @DonSerrot Glad to know I wasn't the only one disappointed with Generations. I thought the campaign was horribly designed. It took ages before getting to any battles that were actually challenging and fun.
Re: Capcom Is Bringing Monster Hunter XX to the Switch
I'm waiting for a Monster Hunter 5 announcement. I'll probably pass on XX. I didn't like Generations that much.
Has anyone here played XX? how does it compare to Generations?
I wonder what will happen to the 3ds touchscreen shortcuts on the switch version.
Re: Video: Get Warmed Up for Ever Oasis With This Overview Trailer
I hadn't paid any attention to this before, but this summer I'll probably still be holding off on getting a Switch so I may be looking for something to play on 3DS, and this looks great
Re: New Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Rewards Appear on My Nintendo in North America
@ap0001 From Club Nintendo I got Pokemon X, Mario 3D Land, Pikmin 3, Donkey Country Tropical Freeze, Game and Wario plus a ton of VC games, all completely free. Not to mention the wii u deluxe digital promotion got me a bunch of eshop coupons to use on anything I want...
so yeah, mynintendo is just a bit of a disappointment by comparison.
