Hollywood in general is garbage. By the way, the military has to be involved in the plot because it has to have pro military propaganda, same reason the military is always promoted at sporting events.
I never doubted that there would be a brand new MH on switch. This is going to sell like crazy in Japan and with the series gaining popularity in the west I think it will do well there too. I can't wait to play this. I've had a long enough break from MH. With Hyrule Warriors and now this, it's so nice to finally have some NEW games to look forward to!
@sikthvash Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity had no advance rumors right? That was a really nice surprise. But yeah, I understand your sentiment. In this case, for me it was always a given that there would be a new Monster Hunter for switch at some point.
This is great I guess for people who have no other way to play these games or are just really excited to have them on the switch, but they hardly feel like definitive editions.
@Clammy I'm wondering the same thing. I could never get into Mario 64 because of the camera. I'm still on the fence about getting 3D all stars. A visual upgrade alone isn't really worth it for me. I expected some performance upgrades too. Disappointing for some, but Nintendo have already sold tons of copies anyway so I guess why should they bother putting any effort into this?
@TurboTEF It's worth what people are willing to pay. With so much competition in indie games, so many excellent games regularly priced around $20, obviously a lot of people thought $40 was too high for a game like this.
I've had this game on my radar for a long time. I'll probably pick it up at this price. Call me cheap if you want but there are so many games to choose from; publishers need to be careful about price point if they expect to be competitive. Stating the obvious here, but it's a lot better to sell tens of thousands of copies at $20 than a few thousand copies at $40. By the way I don't think $20 is rock bottom basement price. That would be $10 or less.
@cowntsikin I played Celeste and didn't enjoy it. I finished just out of stubbornness but never found it fun, and I thought the characters were extremely annoying. Now go ahead and insult me for having a different opinion than you and not liking a game that you love.
@Swizze I can honestly say that Celeste is a well made game, but it's not for everyone and I don't think it's at all deserving of the hype it's received. I didn't enjoy it much.
Hollow knight and Monster Hunter were my favorite games last year.
I can't be the only one who thinks Celeste is overrated. It's a very well made game in many ways, but I just found the mechanics and level design stressful and ultimately not really fun. Out of sheer stubbornness I played it to the end but I couldn't be bothered to go after any of the strawberries after the first couple areas. As for the story, well I just found the characters, all of them, extremely annoying.
@Heavyarms55 I get bored very quickly with Smash. It's kind of fun for a little while to play with a group of people, but I never play it by myself. After getting both the wii u and 3ds versions, I decided to pass on Smash ultimate. Despite all the hype surrounding it, I've heard plenty of Nintendo fans say that they don't really care for Smash. I believe there was an opinion piece on this very site about not being able to get into Smash much.
@Zeldafan79 same here. I still play my wii u and 3ds all the time, as much as the switch
I might eventually get shovel knight on switch too though. Yacht club has been really generous in giving all the dlc updates for free on all platforms to anyone who already owns the game
@sanderev I remember enjoying NSMB Wii but it never really grabbed me, and I never finished NSMB U, only played about half of it before losing interest. The music and art style just don't do anything for me. Somehow I was expecting more from them. I just find Mario World has so much charm, the music so much atmosphere, especially the castles and ghost houses, and I loved searching for all the secret exits. To each their own I guess
@Wavey84 @BarefootBowser yeah, I hope they never remake this game. Can you imagine if they remade it with the New SMB series graphics and music? Ugh.
I agree with other posts above, the New series is just so stale, bland and lifeless by comparison. Some decent platforming in them but they just don't hook me at all.
I just finished replaying this game for maybe the fourth or fifth time in my life. Truly a masterpiece. The music, the colorful art style, the sense of exploration, all grabbed my imagination as a kid and still make me smile today. I remember as a kid feeling like I was really going on an adventure (same with Link to the Past) and very few other games have ever given me that feeling in quite the same way.
@GameOtaku I agree, the once a week check in is lame. The games should automatically be available for the length of the subscription. It makes no sense.
I imagine there aren't many people affected by this, but still, it's completely unnecessary.
A couple years ago I upgraded from my original 3ds xl to the new 3ds xl and I'm so glad I did. Partly I just wanted to make sure I have a working 3ds for years to come, but with the new stable 3d effect I started playing in 3d a lot more and I love it. I still play it frequently, as much or maybe even more than the switch.
@J-Plap I was thinking the same. I didn't bother watching the video but doesn't it look identical to the older switch and come with the exact same accessories? The only difference is the box right?
@Spudtendo I think for someone who's never owned a 3DS it's still worth getting now. It doesn't need support in the form of new games. It has an enormous catalog of amazing games, and it's super cheap now to buy the system plus a bunch of games. I've had a 3DS since 2013 and bought one of the "new" models two years ago. There are still games I haven't played yet that I would like to get someday.
Unless you care a lot about HD graphics, the 3DS is still worth buying. And let's be honest, even when it was first released the graphics were hardly state of the art.
Not a single one of my favorite games made the list. Well, I really liked Mario 3D Land actually, now that I think about it.
I've never understood the Pokemon craze. Not my cup of tea at all.
Mario Kart 7 is one of my least favorite MK games. Still fairly fun, but MK8 is far superior and I still prefer MK wii over MK7. Something about the items and the AI in 7 annoyed me. It felt like there was too much luck involved. It did have some cool tracks though.
@Ludovsky I'm not sure I understood the first part of your comment. Based on the job postings, you do think that the sequel will have more traditional dungeons?
Anyway, if they re-use the same engine and a lot of the same assets, which would be perfectly sensible in my opinion, then the sequel definitely could be coming fairly soon, maybe even next year as you predict.
Breath of the Wild is an incredible game. It does so many things perfectly, but the lack of large, traditional dungeons was a bit disappointing. Honestly I got bored with the shrines after a while, and after a certain point there wasn't much reason to even bother completing them since I already had more than enough health and stamina. That's my biggest complaint with Breath of the Wild: so much of it was optional with little or no real incentive or reward for completing all of the optional stuff.
I definitely hope the sequel sees a return of classic Zelda style dungeons.
@Jayofmaya yeah, seems like a strange, and not very effective promotion. I'm sure a good percentage of the passengers on that flight have no interest in the switch.
@AtlanteanMan yep, same, for all the reasons you listed. If streaming was the only way to play new games I would quit playing new games and stick with playing older games. I figure there are enough games out there already to keep me busy.
@BrettAwesome The switch wifi is abysmal. When it's docked mine refuses to connect, and it's only about 15 feet away from the wireless router, and with a direct line of sight.
I still love the 3ds and still play mine regularly (currently replaying Oot master quest). the dual screens and the 3d effect are awesome features. The Nintendo trifecta of Zelda, Metroid and Mario got outstanding iterations with Link between worlds, Samus Returns and 3D Land.
For long periods of time my 3ds was basically a Monster Hunter machine, 4 ultimate being my favorite.
I love retro style pixel art games, if they're done well. I think the developers of this game need to put in more effort if they want to stand out from the crowd.
For 5 bucks it might be worth a shot but with so many other games to play I'll most likely pass on this.
@sdelfin If they keep up with their extremely high standards of quality with visuals, music and most importantly gameplay, I'm sure that their games will continue to sell well, even if they continue in the same style after the novelty wears off.
@BacklogBlues Just to clarify, you actually can't beat the game on the easy mode.
But as I and others have said, with a bit of patience, the normal mode is manageable.
I say you should play Cuphead now. I understand the backlog problem with so many good games out there, but my approach is to first play the games that are of the absolute highest quality, and Cuphead is unquestionably up there.
Much respect to the developers. I consider Cuphead a masterpiece in its genre and a true work of art.
It's also not as hard as everyone says it is. I think that just goes to show how gamers are so used to games being extremely easy nowadays.
You just have to be smart and find the strategy that works for each situation that the game throws at you. In the end I found only a couple of the stages to be truly challenging to the point of starting to become frustrating (and oddly enough it wasn't the final two bosses, who didn't seem that hard to me).
@Realnoize Anything that is sold is a commercial product, including games, novels, music. I don't think there is anything wrong with making money by selling entertainment. But there are unethical ways of making money, and I think we can all agree that loot boxes, aka gambling aimed at children, and pay to win micro transactions, are highly unethical.
I'm with you on the current games being released. Most big studio games aren't for me either, but as you say, thank god for some indie developers making some truly outstanding games and selling them without any bs.
I'm sure having Mario in Kingdom Battle did help its sales, but aside from that it's just a really well made game. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about it. I'd love to have a sequel.
I'm a little surprised to see monster hunter in the list, but I'm really glad for that because it makes it more likely we get a brand new MH for switch.
@jiffymalaise I've had trouble with the wireless connectivity on my switch also. The left joycon sometimes disconnects when playing with the switch docked. (absolutely infuriating when you're on a good run in Cuphead!)
And it consistently has trouble connecting to wifi, especially when docked, and my wireless router is only about 6-7 meters away and in direct line of sight to the dock. It even shows full signal strength in the switch internet settings but refuses to connect. One solution for the internet problem when playing docked is to buy a wired LAN adapter. I don't play online very often so I haven't bothered getting one, and when I do need to connect my switch to the internet I use it handheld and just sit right next to the router.
I've been buying Nintendo products since the original NES and I was always impressed with the quality and durability of Nintendo hardware, never had any issues before. I've had a lot of fun with the switch but the quality of the hardware leaves a lot to be desired and in that way I'm disappointed with it. It's a shame because the concept of the switch is so fantastic.
A brand new Contra sounds awesome, but why entirely top down isometric 3d? And the style and tone of this just seem really obnoxious. I thought they really nailed it with the Rebirth wiiware game. I'd sooner have another one like that.
Is this just a straight remake with updated graphics? If so, and it's regular full retail price, I'll be passing. I'm not crazy about the art style. As far as playability, the gbc version is perfectly fine for me.
@Philo With such a fantastic engine, it makes sense to use it again for a sequel. I hope this is indeed like what Majora's Mask was for Ocarina of Time.
With so many games on switch now I really appreciate lists like this and as someone else mentioned, I'm glad that the games weren't ranked in this list.
But many of the games listed here I don't really consider metroidvanias. For me a true metroidvania isn't just an interconnected map, but it has to have exploration and a sense that you can go in many different directions. Some of the games in this list are completely linear so you're essentially just playing a series of levels in order, even if they are interconnected.
Hollow Knight and Axiom Verge are outstanding examples of what I consider true metroidvanias.
@gamekill I got Blaster Master Zero on 3DS because I hadn't bought a Switch yet at the time. Disappointingly it does not have stereoscopic 3D at all. I also thought that it was just ok. Not bad but not great. I never found much of a challenge in it so it kind of felt like I was just going through the motions to get through it.
I haven't played the sequel. Can anyone tell me if that one is worth getting, for someone who didn't especially like the first one?
If there is a revised model, for god's sake Nintendo please improve the wifi! I often have trouble connecting even when I'm just 5 or 6 feet from the router. It rarely is able to connect when docked and my dock is only about 20 feet from the router, with no walls or anything in the way.
@MetaRyan This is exactly what I was thinking. Why make a lite version with non detachable controllers? This would compromise a lot of functionality. Just sell the current model without the dock. Table top mode would still be possible.
They're already selling the dock separately, but I can imagine more families wanting multiple switches with only one dock than vice versa.
As you say, I'm sure they could price it at, or close to, $200 and still make a profit.
Indie game of the year for me is Hollow Knight, although I still haven't played some others like Celeste and Dead Cells so maybe my vote there isn't fair. Something about the style of those games turned me off, despite the near universal praise for them.
I know Smash will win anyway but I'm just not a fan of it.
My Switch game of the year is a game that some were calling a lazy uprezzed port of an expansion of a 3 year old 3ds game, that wasn't worth the full retail price, and that came out a year too late and has been rendered obsolete by a newer iteration on other platforms.
Well for me, even if I had bought a Switch just for this game alone it would still be worth it. Man do I love playing Monster Hunter on the Switch!!! I've played practically nothing else in the last 4 months.
@Ensemen So your argument is that everything that is illegal is morally wrong? And if something is legal somewhere at some point in time, in that time and place it is morally justified? Tell me, do you always follow every law? You never drive over the speed limit? or roll through a stop sign if there is no one else in the intersection?
Tell me how a company is a victim when someone downloads a rom of a game that can no longer be purchased from that company, or which the customer has already purchased from the company.

They're already selling the dock separately, but I can imagine more families wanting multiple switches with only one dock than vice versa.
As you say, I'm sure they could price it at, or close to, $200 and still make a profit.
Re: Review: Carcassonne - An Enjoyable But Imperfect Version Of A Board Game Classic
I was interested in this. What a shame they couldn't be bothered to do it right.
Is this the same company making the Catan game? If it is then that's not very promising. :/
Re: Feature: Vote For Your 2018 Nintendo Game Of The Year
Indie game of the year for me is Hollow Knight, although I still haven't played some others like Celeste and Dead Cells so maybe my vote there isn't fair. Something about the style of those games turned me off, despite the near universal praise for them.
Anyway I thought Hollow Knight was great.
Re: Feature: Vote For Your 2018 Nintendo Game Of The Year
I know Smash will win anyway but I'm just not a fan of it.

@Ensemen Chill out man
Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Maddening Stance On Retro Gaming Is Driving Me To Piracy
Re: Surprise! A Special Version Of The Legend Of Zelda Has Appeared In The Switch's NES Library
I have to agree with what a few others have said here. This kind of defeats the purpose of the game which is to explore and discover items.
I guess it's good for people wanting an easy mode.
I was hoping that they would improve the controls, which is my only complaint about what is otherwise an excellent game that still holds up.

@Yorumi Thanks for calling that guy out and not stooping to his level.
Re: Review: Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition - A 2D Wrestling Riot That Shines Again On Switch
I enjoyed this game but never felt any desire to replay it. I also found it too linear to really be considered a metroidvania.
Definitely recommended to anyone who's never played it though. The combat is a lot of fun.
