Re: Feature: Monster Hunter Rise Director Talks RE Engine On Switch

teko

Interesting interview. Monster Hunter Rise has become my favorite game on the switch. I've been a mh fan since 3 ultimate but Rise really makes the hunts that much more enjoyable with more speed and mobility, and I love the ancient ruins esthetic that the maps have. I'm taking a break after already putting in about 200 hours but I'll jump back in when the next big update comes.

It's incredible what the developers were able to pull off. The performance is outstanding and it looks great too.

Re: Metroid Series Tops Wii U eShop's "Best Sellers" List Following Dread Reveal

teko

It's great to see Metroid getting some more attention. I already have Fusion, Zero Mission and Prime Trilogy on the wii u.

I decided to finally play through Metroid 1-4 in order (Zero Mission, AM2R, Super and Fusion).

I had downloaded AM2R years ago but for some reason never got around to playing it. To anyone who hasn't played it, it's also definitely worth checking out. You can tell how much passion the developers have for the Metroid series. It's really well done.

I will replay Samus Returns at some point also before Dread comes out. Maybe Other M and Prime Trilogy too. I found Prime 2 kind of stressful and I don't remember too much about 3.

Re: Talking Point: Why Metroid Dread Will Be Worth $60

teko

@BloodNinja Well, isn't it simply that Nintendo is hesitant to put out too many Metroid titles because it's a riskier investment since historically they have not sold as well as other IP's? If you want to call that "milking" the fans by "grabbing my attention in the oasis" (your exact words in your reply to me, I guess you meant desert??) ok, whatever.

So according to you anyone who thinks Dread looks good is just a blind fanboy? I have played all the old Metroid games. I didn't buy Federation Force because it didn't look interesting to me. I did not buy Other M at launch because it didn't look that great to me. I picked it up for $10 in the bargain bin later and thought it was ok. Not nearly as bad as some people made it out to be.

And on top of that you're going to tell the creators of Metroid what is and isn't Metroid? Apparently they must never experiment with new mechanics and should just keep rehashing the exact same formula over and over, according to you?

So like @CBordo said, you're basically just being condescending and obnoxious by saying anyone who disagrees with your subjective opinion about what makes for a good game is a blind fanboy.

You want to just keep replaying the old games? Good for you. I'm looking forward to another new take on Metroid. I liked what Mercury Steam did with Samus Returns. I liked the melee move and how it created new mechanics which added complexity to the boss fights. And I never found it was required to use it all the time on every enemy so I really don't understand the complaints about it breaking up the pace. You can disagree with my opinion, but stop acting like your opinion of what Metroid is supposed to be is somehow more valid.

Re: Talking Point: Why Metroid Dread Will Be Worth $60

teko

@BloodNinja
So they are "milking" Metroid by doing nothing with it for many years? If it's never been that popular, why would it become more popular by them doing very little with the franchise for the past decade. Sorry, I don't see the logic there.

And saying that the game will not be good, well, you've already made it clear you really didn't like Samus Returns, so that's fine, but I and many other did like it and think that Dread looks as good or better. that's all subjective.

Re: Talking Point: Why Metroid Dread Will Be Worth $60

teko

@RoguePirate
In reply to your analogy about hiring someone to build a shed, whether it's "fair" or not to pay the self employed guy less than the recognized company is besides the point. If the self employed guy built up a reputation for himself so that he had a steady stream of customers willing to pay him more than the other company, would that be fair or unfair? That's how business works.

I think you already wrote in one of your comments that you will not be buying Dread because of the price, which is fine.

Personally, as a Metroid fan I just hope the game lives up to the very high standards of the Metroid franchise and sells well so that they keep making more. I did enjoy Samus Returns so I'm pretty confident I will enjoy this and am happy to pay $60 for it.

Re: Talking Point: Why Metroid Dread Will Be Worth $60

teko

@Ulysses @JJtheTexan
Some people in this comments section don't seem to understand basic business and marketing concepts. I can guarantee that if Nintendo thought they could sell as many copies at $100 each as they will at $60 each they would sell it for $100. If they thought they could make more money by selling it at $40 because they would sell that many more copies, then they would sell it at $40.

Nintendo has been hugely successful over many decades establishing their brand, and with the switch they are doing especially well. Whether the price seems "fair" or not to some people is irrelevant. Nintendo has already taken that into consideration and decided that Metroid Dread doesn't need to be marketed at a lower price point. Will it pay off for them? Early preorders already seem to show that it will.

Would I rather pay $40 for this game? yes.
Am I willing to pay $60? yes. As a big Metroid fan and someone who really enjoyed Samus Returns I am confident that I will enjoy this and that it's worth $60 to me.
Would I pay $100 for it? no

Re: Free Super Mario Party Update Gives Massive Boost To Online Play

teko

I actually quite enjoy Super Mario Party. it's pretty fun for a casual game night, but this game feels like so much wasted potential. I'd definitely buy an expansion dlc with more boards and mini games. But this game desperately needs a simple update giving more options: competitive mode where you can choose the specific bonus stars that will be given at the end (having "just the right ally"? What the hell is that??), and a speed mode. Seriously half the game time is spent watching tedious unskippable animations. I guess it's nice to finally have an online option, but seriously Nintendo, please fix this game. It could so easily be a great game.

Re: Capcom Will Broadcast Another Monster Hunter Digital Event Next Week

teko

@Yosher Well, in that case I don't really see what you have to lose by playing it, or what you have to gain by not playing it.

I do get where you're coming from. I can't stand obnoxious predatory practices in games, like loot boxes/microtransactions. I was actually annoyed too when I first saw that there was paid dlc day 1 for Rise. I was worried that all the content updates that had always been free in previous MH games would now be paid. Then I found out that the day 1 dlc is purely cosmetic, has zero effect on gameplay and they confirmed free dlc coming. My fears were completely laid to rest.
I hope you do come around and can get into the game. A lot of people consider MH the best action games because of the depth in the combat mechanics. Rise is probably the most accessible entry point for newcomers.

Re: Capcom Will Broadcast Another Monster Hunter Digital Event Next Week

teko

@Yosher Are you completely new to the MH series? If so I can kind of appreciate why the day 1 paid dlc would leave a sour taste for you... But...
notice how not a single person commenting here, all of whom are clearly mh series veterans, has a problem with it? That's because they all know that we will be getting TONS of content added throughout the year. (First free update already confirmed for the end of this month, with a bunch of monsters added) And even if there weren't free updates, you can easily get hundreds of hours of enjoyment out of just the base game alone.
Listen to what everyone is telling you. MH games are easily the best value for money by far because of the endless replay value and the insane amount of content.
Why not just buy the physical game and see for yourself? If you really can't get into it, you can just resell it. If you enjoy it, you could spend hundreds if not thousands of hours on it. Trust me

Re: Talking Point: Is It Worth Buying A Nintendo Wii U In 2021?

teko

Where I live it's easy to find a wii u in the $150-200 range. I think it's easily worth it at that price. You can get gba, n64, ds games. And it's the most accessible way to get Prime Trilogy. And instead of buying wii u ports on the switch you can just buy the originals for super cheap.
I have no interest in rebuying wii u games on switch so until Rise came out I had little reason to use my switch in the past 2 years to be honest.
And I will never understand the hate for the gamepad. Probably the most comfortable controller I've ever used. Way better than the switch in handheld. (I'm not trying to bash the switch. I like it too but I honestly prefer the wii u in some ways.)

Re: Talking Point: Is It Worth Buying A Nintendo Wii U In 2021?

teko

@OG_Monster_Hunter I didn't know people were still playing MH3U! I might have to fire it up again someday. There are a few of the last hub quests I never got around to doing that I'm not sure I could do solo. Lately I've been busy with Rise but I may need a break from it soon.

Re: Soapbox: Monster Hunter Rise Is The Perfect Hybrid Game

teko

@JaxonH I would have to agree with you, Rise is simply a joy to play. As I mentioned in my comment above, I don't like all of the changes in it, and I'd like to see some quests added later with restrictions similar to the older games for added challenge. But Rise is simply the most fun MH has ever been, and I have loved the MH series ever since 3U. Wyvern riding is a really great addition breaking up the pace of a hunt.

Re: Soapbox: Monster Hunter Rise Is The Perfect Hybrid Game

teko

@Strumpan I agree with a lot of your points. I miss being limited to just the items in your pouch on a hunt. It added another layer of strategy which I think is missing from Rise. You had to prioritize what items you needed depending on the situation. And certain skills are now just available all the time, like knowing exactly when a monster is ready to capture. That used to be a skill you could work into your set, but at the expense of giving up another skill. It all made the game more strategic. As you say, now it's just, go straight to the monster and fight, without really worrying about any other factors.
Having said that, I'm absolutely loving Rise. Many of the changes are great. Gathering used to be so tedious but now it's a breeze. Getting around the map quickly with the palamute is fantastic and the wirebugs add a lot of speed and mobility which I like.

Edit: I also find the menus more confusing in Rise, especially the smithy, but I guess I'll get used to it.

Re: Capcom "Aware" Of Monster Hunter Rise Pose Glitch Preventing Players From Opening Save Files

teko

I haven't encountered any glitches. About 20 hours in and the game has been running perfectly so far. Absolutely loving it, although I'm still not sure how I feel about how they have simplified certain things. I think being limited to the items in your pouch on hunts added another layer of strategy that I miss from the old games. I actually wish they would have brought that back for Rise.

Re: Capcom "Aware" Of Monster Hunter Rise Pose Glitch Preventing Players From Opening Save Files

teko

@Brummieendo90 @Crockin The amount of information that the game throws at you is overwhelming. I think it needs to do a better job at introducing newcomers to all the mechanics. Once it clicks with you though the combat is incredibly satisfying.
For starters just focus on the basics. Choose one weapon and learn its basic combos. I recommend sword and shield, dual blades, or hammer. I think they are the simplest to use and they are still my personal favorites. Watch your health and get to a safe place to drink potions when needed.
The essence of the game is to learn the monsters' attack patterns, dodge their attacks and figure out when you have a chance to attack. You can't just start attacking randomly. Sheathe your weapon when not attacking so you can run faster (with weapon sheathed hold R while moving to run fast, but this drains your stamina so watch the stamina bar). Once you get the hang of it the game is amazing.

Re: Poll: Monster Hunter Rise Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?

teko

@Strumpan yeah, I prefer the old skill points system too. I used to love making mixed sets trying to figure out what skills I could unlock with charms and decorations. I also find the menus in Rise really confusing so far. Still Rise feels amazing to play. Everything feels faster. Being able to sharpen and drink potions while riding is awesome.

Re: Round Up: The Monster Hunter Rise Reviews Are In

teko

@gaga64 I'm confused about that too. I'm guessing they meant to say "multi-player" quests rather than "online".

It's always been possible to play any quests in MH solo including the ones intended for 2-4 players. It sounds like Rise is even more accessible in that regard since they said monster HP scales based on the number of players.

Re: Review: Monster Hunter Rise - A New Apex For Capcom's Beastly Franchise

teko

@Silly_G @Mountain_Man
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Capcom already announce free updates coming that will include new monsters and other content. Past monster hunter games have always received free updates too.

There will likely be a paid expansion released about a year from now. I think all MH games have followed this pattern. As far as value for money goes nothing competes with MH in my opinion. If you like the series you can easily get hundreds of hours of enjoyment out of each game.

Re: Controversial Rising Sun Design Removed From Street Fighter II's Re-Release

teko

@GannonBanned @cdmac
It was not just bad harvests that caused the famine. I know what my ancestors lived through. If you think forcibly taking land and grain is a good idea you are a psychopath.

And you both made light of this which absolutely is very offensive to some which reveals you to be colossal hypocrites.

Nothing wrong with the sickle and hammer?

Re: Video: Capcom Shows Off Apex Monsters And New Rampage Mode In Monster Hunter Rise

teko

@Ganner Yeah those apex hunts were intense!! Funny, I actually just started a new game in MH4U about a week ago. Haven't gotten to the apex monsters yet. I still love that game. Rise looks amazing though. The wirebugs open up so many new possibilities. Only problem, there's a good chance it will occupy all of my gaming time for the rest of the year!

Re: Gallery: Capcom Shares Stunning Concept Art For Monster Hunter Rise's Frost Islands

teko

@JaxonH I love seeing your passion for this series. I agree with everything you say. My first experience with MH was also 3 ultimate and I also got into with a friend. I felt exactly the same initial frustration that most newcomers to MH describe. But once it clicks, the game is amazing. The only problem is that it gets too addictive!

All your advice for new players is excellent. One thing I realized though, is that the really good players don't sheathe that often. They know how to dodge and reposition and use combos perfectly to just keep attacking relentlessly. When I see speed runs of people taking down mizutsune in under 5 minutes in the demo I realized that despite putting hundreds of hours, probably around a thousand, into MH games, I still suck comparatively speaking. I mean I beat all the g rank quests in previous games, and even apex in 4U which I think was the most frustrating, but man, some people do it with style! And that just goes to show the insane amount of depth there is in the combat.

Re: The Monster Hunter Rise Demo Is So Popular It's Apparently Causing The Switch eShop To Struggle

teko

@LilMuku In the older MH games the characters would do a pointless flex pose animation after drinking a potion. Haha

I think I speak for all MH fans when I say that none of the things you mentioned are flaws or problems. I felt the same as you initially when I tried my first MH game, until I realized that it's not a button mashing hack and slash kind of game. All your moves need to be strategic and deliberate. You gotta learn to time your attacks properly and know when and where it's safe to drink potions or open the menu.

Re: Video: Are People Still Playing Wii U Games Online? Let's Find Out

teko

Never understood all the hate for the wii u. As so many have already said here, the gamepad is super comfortable to use. For me, the most comfortable controller I have ever used. The switch in handheld without some kind of grip is not comfortable at all. I've never liked the joycons. I still like the switch but have always felt a little disappointed with it. The hardware quality felt like a downgrade and not up to Nintendo's usual high standards.

Re: Nintendo Paid "Around $6 Million" For Monster Hunter Rise's Timed Exclusivity On Switch

teko

If Rise does release for PC, I really don't see that affecting Switch sales much. Not sure that timed exclusivity is really going to matter. A lot of MH fans will want to play it handheld.
I'm just happy this game exists, that it was made specifically for the switch. This is the game that I've been waiting for ever since switch was first announced four years ago. But if a pc version means more people get to play it, then I say that's great.

Re: Poll: Rate Your Favourite Wii Games

teko

I love the wii. A lot of great games. I didn't mind waggle controls in Mario and Zelda. Haha. And I made a point of playing Mario Kart wii with motion controls and really enjoyed it. Most outstanding use of the wii controls though, and possibly the greatest compilation ever:
Metroid Prime Trilogy

Re: Review: Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit - A Joyful Fusion Of Reality And Fiction

teko

As much this looks like a cool idea it's appeal just seems so limited. One part I don't really get is if you're looking at the switch screen the entire time while racing anyway, isn't it somewhat pointless or redundant to even have a real rc car driving around the house? I suppose the gimmick is that you see your own rooms, furniture etc. on screen. Is it possible to play it by watching the rc car instead of the screen?
To me a Mario Kart Maker game (track editor, just video game with no rc car or ar component) would have a lot broader appeal and waaaaay more longevity. Still I applaud Nintendo for taking a chance with this and I hope a lot of people have fun with it.
