@ZiggyZane Same here. MH now and for the foreseeable future!
I might jump in online a bit this weekend since that will soon be behind a paywall, and I will be holding out on paying until Nintendo offers something a lot more appealing.
@Galenmereth yep. I will not be paying for it, and I'm tired of hearing people defend it saying "it's only $20 a year. You can pay for it with the change in your couch cushions... blah blah blah..."
It's an extra couple hundred million dollars a year for Nintendo for doing practically nothing is what it is. It's a lame cash grab.
@rjejr I was thinking about that too, the contrast between the demand for the nes mini and the negativity towards nes games as part of switch online. I think the people going nuts over the nes mini were the really hard core Nintendo fans/collectors. The scarcity of it gave it this mythical status.
Ironically I think the situation with the nes mini might have caused Nintendo to massively overestimate the broad appeal of nes games. Outside of the few million hardcore fans going nuts over the nes mini, I don't think you'll find anyone else who cares at all about nes games.
I paid $5 for Mario Bros 3 on the wii, transferred it to my wii u and can still play it there to this day. That and maybe a couple others (original Zelda, maybe Ninja Gaiden) are about the only nes games still worth playing imo.
I get what you're saying about the value of this, compared to vc prices, it's just that most people don't care at all about nes games anymore. Most of these games weren't even fun to begin with. I think when people complain about the absence of vc on the switch, what they really mean is they want game cube games, and maybe some gba, n64 and snes, which include games I would still consider among the best games of all time.
I think Nintendo dropped the ball in so many ways with this online service. But even just offering snes and gba games at the launch would have satisfied a lot more people. It would cost them nothing and would have gone a long way to improving the perception of the service. But only offering nes games initially just feels like a sad joke. I think they've carried their stubborn belief in preserving the value of their games way too far here and it's starting to hurt their image even with longtime fans.
(sorry for the wall of text. Yesterday I was thinking to myself that I was done ranting about the switch online, but apparently not because here I am... )
I'm very interested in these, but wondering what kind of price range to expect. I may pick up Carcassonne and Catan, but no online is a little puzzling.
@Ralphio yep, it's a rental service. if you stop paying, or once the service is cut off, your games and cloud saves are gone.
and they still haven't said anything about those "special offers". I'm guessing they will be along the lines of mynintendo "rewards": 30% off wii u and 3ds games.
@Ricube Some people are upset there isn't something more and had hoped for more information because they still find it hard to believe Nintendo would offer such a mediocre service. (Mind you, we should have had an idea of what to expect based on mynintendo. Remember all those people saying it would get better over time?)
Are we supposed to get excited about paying for something that was always free (or rather, is included in the price of the games)?
What information were we hoping to find out? Well, will they be providing dedicated servers for online or is it just the same old p2p that costs them nothing. Which games will not support cloud saves? Will they be adding games from other systems to the NES titles they've announced?
But hey, it's only $20 so stop complaining and just pay up.
@Parafin @wasilewski It's not that I can't pay $20 a year. In fact I'd pay more if they offered something of value to me, but I just don't see anything here. This just feels like a lazy cash grab by Nintendo and I don't want to support that. If around half of existing Switch owners pay up, they get an extra $200 million dollars for doing practically nothing. so yeah, I'm complaining about $20 a year.
the worst part is, they could so easily have included SNES, GBA and N64 games and made cloud saves work for every game. It would cost them next to nothing, and a lot more people could get excited about this, but they're too stingy.
@AlternateButtons My sentiments exactly. I'd say this was a great direct, with the very noteworthy exception of the switch online portion. They gave no new information at all! And even made a point of saying "an expanding list of NES games", as if to emphasize that it's only going to be NES games! They hyped up the cloud saves but did not address the issue of some games not supporting it. Ridiculous.
But other than that yeah, lots of cool announcements. Luigi's Mansion 3! And Yoshi looks to have some interesting mechanics. In the absence of a VC, stuff like Capcom's beat em up bundle is most welcome, and I hope to see more retro collections like this. I'm also interested in the board games. Lots of great stuff coming.
I might just have to pick this up. I never played the original, but I quite enjoyed Dark Moon. It took me a while to get into, but eventually I started to see its charm.
It seems to me Luigi's Mansion 3 is the first unexpected pleasant surprise we've seen from Nintendo in quite some time. 2019 is looking a lot more promising after what I would consider a rather mediocre 2018.
@Heavyarms55 I would probably go for it if they offered a wider selection of retro games from nes, snes, gba, n64 and would even pay more for game cube, but most of the nes games they are offering I wouldn't bother playing even if they were free.
@Spectra I'm in the same boat. The only reason I would consider paying for switch online would be to play mhgu. I mostly play solo anyway though, so I'll probably pass, unless they announce something we don't know about yet that actually offers something of value, and not just paying for the privilege of using the internet service that I already paid for.
@Balta666 @Tibob It's funny, I don't recall thinking the Spectre Knight campaign was significantly easier. I just liked the feel of how he moves. I remember doing that vertical section where the order of the sections is randomized, and found that quite a challenge. It took me quite a few tries but it felt great when I beat it. I did also enjoy plague knight but it took me a while to get used to his move set. Honestly, they're all great!
I may pick up Shovel Knight on switch when king of cards releases. Even though I'd be perfectly happy to play it for free on my wii u version, and I don't normally double dip on any games, I feel like these guys deserve to be supported. Yacht Club, and also Team Cherry, put so many developers to shame with both the quality and value of their games.
@imgrowinglegs The Spectre Knight content was awesome. I think I did enjoy it even more than the original Shovel Knight campaign, although it's been a few years since I played the original so it's tough to compare.
@Syrek24 If I lost my save in a game like Monster hunter generations, which I've put hundreds of hours into, I'd be hugely disappointed for sure, but it's not like I'd lose all reason to live. I'd get over it. But the point is that in this day and age there's no reason why I should have to be in that situation.
Honestly, I feel like you're the one who's over reacting, to the many understandable frustrations with the way Nintendo is handling this paid online service. It's not unreasonable to expect a certain standard of service if customers are paying for online, and we don't see what Nintendo is offering as meeting that standard, even considering the comparatively low price.
For all your self righteous posturing about living with a greater purpose and not being upset over trivial matters, you are the one who has devoted more time commenting on this than anyone else.
@Dpullam Hollow Knight is great. I think I'm well and truly done with it now but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it, despite some frustration early on.
@ninty Actually I felt even Mario Odyssey did not live up to the hype. You're just running around finding moons everywhere. I had more fun with Mario+Rabbids.
@PAppleyard @Petriebird I'm sort of the same. It's sooooo much cheaper, and there are so many amazing games from the last 30 years, you'll never run out of stuff to play.
I do have a switch but have only bought three games so far for it. I generally don't care about getting new games day one and I still have a bunch of games I haven't finished yet on the wii u. It's a great system!
@Frendo I think the difference between vc and porting wii u games to switch is this: vc gives you access to very old games for relatively cheap. Some wii u owners may have never played those games before, may not have even been alive when they first released, or may not have played them for many years and no longer have access to them elsewhere. On the other hand, for some wii u owners who also bought a switch, it's not appealing to pay full retail price for a port of a wii u game that you played fairly recently and could still play on the wii u. (Some really want those games portable so I guess it's worth it for them.)
For me, I love having Nintendo's entire back catalogue (well, almost) on one console. I can play (almost) every single metroid and Zelda game there. I also find the gamepad a lot more comfortable than the joycons. I love the wii u. I have a switch but still find myself playing the wii u more. If you can afford to buy all the latest games and accessories then great, but there's a lot of awesome gaming to be had on the wii u and it can be done quite inexpensively now.
@GrailUK Honestly, I think if Nintendo offered a wide variety of games from nes, snes, game boy, gba, n64 as soon as the service launches, and even charged slightly more, fans would be a lot more excited about this. The perception among many is that even though it's cheap, you're not getting anything of value.
@NCChris I did not see anyone being a "douche" to people who are planning to pay for the online service. Just different people expressing different opinions, that's all I saw. Some are happy with it. Some are critical of it.
@shadowharold @NoxAeturnus I once tried to play Mario Kart 8 with a friend, each with a single joycon, no attachment. I couldn't get through one race, trying to drift or hold items. It's pretty much unplayable that way.
I'm always puzzled when Nintendo shows players using the joy cons sideways without the strap attachment, with the players apparently pressing the shoulder buttons. Those buttons are almost impossible to press like that. And the player on the left isn't using the buttons while the player on the right isn't using the stick. How exactly are they playing? What a weird picture.
Anyway, I rarely play online so I'm not interested in this online service. Nes games? Meh. Cloud saves? Just let me back up saves on the SD card.
When I went looking for the new dlc I discovered some stuff I had missed. I'm sure I'm still missing a few things.
I haven't really played the Godmaster content yet though. As much as I enjoyed Hollow Knight I don't really feel like replaying all the bosses back to back. I can't complain about free dlc, but I'm not really interested in a boss rush mode. Still, I got way more than my money's worth with this game.
I supported La Mulana 2 on Kickstarter, one of only two games where I've done that, because I believe in the developers. The game took a lot longer than expected to finish but I never doubted that they would create something special. There's something I find really compelling about the look and feel of La Mulana.
So I've got La Mulana 2 on my laptop already, but I will probably get it on switch when that version comes out. My laptop is really old and overheats and struggles to run even a relatively undemanding game such as this, so I haven't played too much of it yet.
@ShadJV Yes, I agree. La Mulana is the kind of game where there's no shame in using a guide. I think I made it about three fourths of the way through before resorting to guides, and I don't regret that because some of the puzzles I would never have solved on my own, and I had fun playing it through to the end.
It's funny what others are saying though, about entering an area and being literally stuck because they lacked an item needed to progress and couldn't back track either. I never encountered anything like this, and I freely explored everywhere. It's possible to enter areas woefully unprepared in terms of health and weapons, but I was never literally trapped to the point of having to start the whole game over.
But this is definitely a game that requires serious persistence.
@BlueOcean With hundreds of hours put into each MH game since 3u, this is by far my most played series. Nothing else even comes close. I'm still waiting for gen u to arrive in the mail sadly.
I even booted up 3U yesterday just for some nostalgia, and realized how much I left unfinished in that one. I could pour another hundred hours into it. So the full price on any MH game is easily justified for me by the sheer amount of enjoyment I will get out of it.
There's just so much that the game never bothers explaining, it can be very off putting in the beginning. When I first started with MH, for the first few hours I didn't even know to eat a meal before hunting. This is a good starter guide, and fortunately there are several YouTube channels with great tutorials, as others mentioned.
@Spookypatrol Nice to see another diehard MH fan here. Happy hunting!
@JaxonH Mh3u was my introduction to the series also, with a very similar experience to yours. I hated the demo, but a friend convinced me to get the game. Even several hours into the game I wasn't enjoying it, but he persuaded me to stick with it and after a while I was hooked!
@Gibb @redd214 @aznable @blockfight @SmaggTheSmug I honestly can't understand why Capcom keeps making the same kind of demo for MH games. It is a horrible introduction to the game as it does not explain anything about how the game works. I felt the same as all of you after first trying the demo for mh3u years ago. But a friend of mine urged me to give the game a chance and after a while it clicked with me. Now it's one of my absolute favorite series.
It may genuinely not be your type of game but the demo is nothing to base that on.
Some people argue that subscription services are great value for money because you get access to a massive amount of content for a small (but recurring) fee.
But I generally find that I'm only interested in a tiny percentage of what is offered, so I'm actually paying mostly for content I don't want. I have never had a cable TV subscription, for that reason, because it's 99% garbage content.
I fear this is what would happen with games when/if the industry moves to only offering a subscription service.
Until then I will continue to buy and own the games that I want to play, and if that day comes, I guess I will no longer play new games. Chances are that they won't be worth playing anyway.
I'm glad to see pretty much everyone here feels the same way.
@Quarth @AtlanteanMan Excellent posts. I'd like to add something related that I hear few people talking about but which will have even graver implications for humanity than just the way we purchase and consume entertainment, and that is the banks' push towards a cashless society. I fear it will just be accepted on the grounds of "convenience", yet few people are considering the ramifications of the banks having total control over every single person's money, when all we would have is numbers in an account on their system.
This was already a steal at the regular price of $15. Anyone who has even a remote interest in this game should try it out. And for those waiting for the physical edition, at this price you might as well buy it now on the eshop and still get the physical copy later. It will still be great value for your money.
Other developers should take note: make a quality game and sell it for a reasonable price. You will sell lots and earn a ton of fan loyalty.
I'm assuming it's the same content as the Japanese demo for XX.
I'm looking forward to having MH on switch, even if it is a port of an old 3ds game; it's got local multi-player!
For anyone trying the demo who has never played MH, keep in mind that MH demos have not usually done a great job of explaining how the game works. If you are interested in the game watch some tutorials by gaijin hunter or Arekz
@MartyFlanMJFan I guess my entire comment could have been summed up with "git gud" If you need specific advice on countering specific moves, let me know, or just watch someone on YouTube beat them.
@MartyFlanMJFan I found all the gimmicky charms to be not useful at all in the really tough boss fights and the trial of the fool. For nightmare Grimm I loaded up on as much health as I could just so I could last longer than 10 seconds Then I just memorized his moves, figured out how to counter them and then practiced, a lot . He is so fast that there is no margin for error. You can't go into it thinking you'll beat him on the 10th try or the 20th try or even the 100th try. If you're patient you should eventually get into a certain rhythm and you will be able to dodge all of his attacks and get in a few hits with the nail.
It took me several hours, not in one siting, but eventually I got into the zone and I knew I would beat him.
As for charms, all you need are sprintmaster, longnail and unbreakable strength, and as much health as possible.
Radiance is not nearly as hard as nightmare Grimm. My only suggestion is, once you get to the second phase, with the small platforms, don't chase him. Just stay on one platform. His attacks aren't very hard to dodge if you do that, and whenever he comes close to you get in as many hits as you can.
After beating nightmare Grimm, I went back and replayed Radiance and it felt very easy by comparison!
@FarkyValentine I felt the same as you did for the first few hours of hollow knight. I persisted and ended up enjoying it for the most part, but yeah, the game can feel like a tough slog at times. I think the game world is maybe a little too big. If you miss something or forget something you can end up wandering around aimlessly for hours.
@PanurgeJr Why does expressing a negative opinion equal trolling? Why are there so many people here who can't handle someone expressing that they don't like something? If you like something and someone else says they don't like it, does that detract from your enjoyment of it? Should only people who love something be allowed to comment on it?

The game took a lot longer than expected to finish but I never doubted that they would create something special. There's something I find really compelling about the look and feel of La Mulana.
So I've got La Mulana 2 on my laptop already, but I will probably get it on switch when that version comes out. My laptop is really old and overheats and struggles to run even a relatively undemanding game such as this, so I haven't played too much of it yet.
Re: La-Mulana 2 Confirmed For Nintendo Switch Release Next Year
@ShadJV Yes, I agree.

@IronMan30 Great avatar!
Re: Review: Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Switch)
@BlueOcean With hundreds of hours put into each MH game since 3u, this is by far my most played series. Nothing else even comes close. I'm still waiting for gen u to arrive in the mail sadly.
I even booted up 3U yesterday just for some nostalgia, and realized how much I left unfinished in that one. I could pour another hundred hours into it. So the full price on any MH game is easily justified for me by the sheer amount of enjoyment I will get out of it.
Re: Guide: Getting Started With Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on Nintendo Switch
There's just so much that the game never bothers explaining, it can be very off putting in the beginning. When I first started with MH, for the first few hours I didn't even know to eat a meal before hunting. This is a good starter guide, and fortunately there are several YouTube channels with great tutorials, as others mentioned.
Re: Review: Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Switch)
@Spookypatrol Nice to see another diehard MH fan here. Happy hunting!
@JaxonH Mh3u was my introduction to the series also, with a very similar experience to yours. I hated the demo, but a friend convinced me to get the game. Even several hours into the game I wasn't enjoying it, but he persuaded me to stick with it and after a while I was hooked!

@Gibb @redd214 @aznable @blockfight @SmaggTheSmug
I honestly can't understand why Capcom keeps making the same kind of demo for MH games.
Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Urges Game Developers To Embrace Subscription-Based Services
Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Urges Game Developers To Embrace Subscription-Based Services
Re: Hollow Knight Godmaster DLC Is Now Available For Free, Game Also On Sale For The First Time
This was already a steal at the regular price of $15.

@Dualmask @ekwcll "I don't know why people don't just ignore what they don't like..."
Very well put. Don't like someone's comments? Ignore them.
Re: Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate Is Getting A Free Demo On Switch Tomorrow
Re: Team Cherry Changes Title Of Final Hollow Knight Content Pack Due To Name Clash
@MartyFlanMJFan I guess my entire comment could have been summed up with "git gud" If you need specific advice on countering specific moves, let me know, or just watch someone on YouTube beat them.
Re: Team Cherry Changes Title Of Final Hollow Knight Content Pack Due To Name Clash
@MartyFlanMJFan I found all the gimmicky charms to be not useful at all in the really tough boss fights and the trial of the fool. For nightmare Grimm I loaded up on as much health as I could just so I could last longer than 10 seconds
Then I just memorized his moves, figured out how to counter them and then practiced, a lot .
Re: Team Cherry Changes Title Of Final Hollow Knight Content Pack Due To Name Clash
Re: Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects - July 2018
With so many indie games coming to the eshop, I really appreciate articles like this. Keep it up!
Re: Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects - July 2018
@PanurgeJr Why does expressing a negative opinion equal trolling? Why are there so many people here who can't handle someone expressing that they don't like something? If you like something and someone else says they don't like it, does that detract from your enjoyment of it? Should only people who love something be allowed to comment on it?
Re: Dress Up As Link When Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate Arrives On Switch This August
@PlayedNSlayed yeah, I guess you never know with Capcom, but it just seems like a no-brainer to me. Make it and it will sell
