@Ramouz I definitely agree with the mrwhosetheboss evaluation that while the original Switch is a very thoughtfully designed system, it also is basically a prototype that had to be rushed to market to save them from the Wii U debacle.
In that context, it does seem logical that the Switch 1 was not the exact format they wanted to go with, but market pressures and technology limitations probably forced their hand.
Fit and finish wise, I think it really shows its prototype-ness in the joy-cons and I'm not even talking about how often they break. Even on my OLED model where they have a tighter fit on the rails, they have wobble and make the system feel a little cheap sometimes. And there's no excuse for that original kickstand either--that thing was garbage.
@WhiteUmbrella That's a good thing. They caught lightning in a bottle with the original Switch. Old Nintendo would have said "Oh well!" and moved on to something else completely. Current Nintendo realizes they may just have invented the perfect form factor for multiple kinds of gamers and just gave us a direct upgrade for once.
Before Switch 2's unveiling, I had been concerned for a couple years that I wouldn't want the Switch's successor if it didn't have the same basic concept. VERY grateful for "new Nintendo" in this regard.
@Metazoxan Exactly this--I think you have it right. The addressable market for Switch 2 is basically "anybody who loves Switch 1". There's no way they are not trying to crank these things out as fast as they can.
Just had a flashback to my days working at Best Buy in college. Back then it was Pokémon Red and Blue for Gameboy and Gameboy Color that constantly had the out of stock signs. Rumble Paks for N64 as well—NEVER had those things.
Going to pack my Switch OLED in its original box for my son who’s going to college soon. I’m happy it’s staying in the family and in active duty. But I will not spend one second being nostalgic for it on Thursday when I’m FINALLY playing Switch games in 4K.
I can’t believe mine is even still coming at all, but I just got Walmart confirmation that it’s shipping soon. I had put my pre-order on a card that I had to replace with a new number and the payment failed a few days ago. I was sure this was going to be my downfall at first because it wouldn’t let me re-enter the card but I finally got it to work. The same thing almost happened with the case I ordered from Best Buy.
It has been a long road with this pre-order. I am sick of worrying about it and just want my stuff to get here.
@mlt You honestly didn't miss out much doing that, and I think you'll miss out even less this generation using the same strategy. I can see myself doing the same.
@progx I JUST sent my son's v1 in for a battery replacement after all this time and he noticed that the fresh v2 unit they returned to us was better battery-wise than his old one was at first.
@Misima Many previewers of the hardware have said that the Switch 2 LCD screen looks better to their eyes than the Switch OLED. Seems to be pretty subjective, but even the ones who say it's a downgrade are claiming that it's only a SLIGHT downgrade. Many of them even make good attempts to show the OG Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch 2 running the same game side by side. I don't think you need to worry here.
We're trying to get 2 on order in my house--I got one in through Walmart, but hope to use my Nintendo invite for the other. I got the reminder email late last week like many others and it would just make my year if I could have both on launch day, but I'm not hopeful right now that my Nintendo order will be for June 5th.
Anyone know about how long it takes between the "your turn is coming up" email and the actual invitation email?
@countzero In all seriousness, Steam is a great example! I can still play every game I've ever owned in Steam since day 1 of Steam. That's what keeps me coming back to the platform and others like it.
@Duncanballs Not exaggerating—I have several friends that WILL NOT buy a digital-only game but also never sell (or even play!) any of the games they buy.
Ask my boxes of dead Walkmans/Discmans that stopped functioning for no reason and old tapes and CDs that won’t even play anymore—collecting your content on plastic media doesn’t preserve anything forever. Plastic breaks down and literally melts in slow motion.
@Duncanballs Totally agree. I guess I get it if people feel personally attacked by Nintendo because it's not as fun anymore to hoard their little hunks of plastic in their bedrooms or whatever, but I still refuse to believe this is anything but a storm in a teacup that 99.99% of the Switch-playing audience probably doesn't care or even know about.
Honestly, if I had it my way, all software would be sold digitally ONLY from now on. There is no need for more plastic out in the world, and there is no big bad guy coming to take away anyone's digital media licenses. People need to get a grip.
@Stormcloudlive Thank you—I was wondering the same thing and then came to the conclusion that this dude simply hasn’t played it and was there for a paycheck.
I had a lot of fun with this game--finished it a couple weeks ago or so. I would almost say I liked it more than Tropical Freeze. They might be tied in my mind. Never played the original, but it was borderline "can't put it down" status for me on Switch.
I too use video games to cope with anxiety and stress (along with meds haha), and Animal Crossing got me through some sleepless nights during COVID for sure. Will never forget sitting on my couch one night at 2 am wondering if my allergies were back or if I had COVID, and I fired up Animal Crossing to see my first shooting star event.
Did it cure my anxiety? No. Was it an awesome little moment of joy during a really stressful time in the world? Absolutely!
I think some of you need to remember that Nintendo is a for-profit company. They can't make you new games if they don't make money, and nothing stays the same price forever. You can sit here and argue back and forth if they need to charge you so MUCH money for things, but in the end, things cost what they cost.
I really fail to understand the entitlement. Should a pack of cigarettes still be 10 cents too?
Have only ever ordered two consoles for day one delivery--PS4 and now Switch 2.
I do get where some are coming from with game prices, but I think this is all just unfortunately overdue and the potential for a trade war probably forced their hand by a year or two. (Just a theory.)
Unfortunately, you can't have AAA games at the same price forever. It's just economics.
45 minutes of patiently refreshing browser tabs netted me a Mario Kart bundle and a Pro Controller 2. Target had a system in my cart for that whole time and then eventually deleted. Never got much of anywhere with Best Buy. Walmart ended up being the winner for me, despite the whole process feeling a bit wonky. At least they had messaging telling you what was going on the whole time. Now for the long, slow march to June 5.
Walmart came through for me--finally got a Mario Kart bundle and a Pro Controller 2 for June 5 delivery. Going to see if I can stay awake a little longer and get an order in for my son too--still in line at Best Buy.
Looking forward to being able to say I have a pre-order in (hopefully shortly after it opens up tonight) so I can stop worrying about the pre-order and start looking forward to June 5th. In my ideal world, I'm able to pick up my Best Buy pre-order onsite at midnight on June 5th. Not gonna lie, will likely load up on all the launch titles and a Pro Controller 2.
I love how this site simultaneously reports fluff like this and doom and gloom about hardware/software prices at the same time. This site and its readers/commenters seem a lot happier when new hardware is a rumor instead of a reality. (Summary: if you ever for a second thought a 2nd gen Switch was going to launch at $350, you were always destined for disappointment.)
Day 1 pre-order if at all possible for me. You all can sit and play your backlogs on the OG and pretend you don't care, I'm going to play my backlog (and all the new stuff) on the Switch 2. I'm not going to sit here and pretend like this isn't a major Nintendo launch and won't matter to anyone.
My little brother and I got a free copy of SMB All Stars when we got our SNES, and there was an offer that came with it where if you played the Lost Levels from beginning to end without warping (You had to send a picture of your TV on a certain screen to prove you actually did it) you could get a free leather Mario jacket or something like that.
I actually spent all summer and did it, and even took the picture to send in, and then never bothered. I was happy enough just to say I did it.
I have one cartridge: Mario Kart. I don't care about reselling games, and I don't care if they become unavailable later. I rarely play games again once I'm sick of them. I'd absolutely buy a digital only version of the Switch 2 if it were 50-100 less.
@dskatter For sure. I’m just always surprised at how many game collectors I know actually never play the games they collect. I even have one buddy who never plays NEW games anymore either. He seems completely burned out on video games in general but still buys all the consoles and software every gen and almost NEVER gets rid of any of his collection.
I think some people get into their habits and are afraid to change, and then others just like having that archive of history in their home.
@dskatter Yes, that’s definitely a case FOR buying physical copies, but at least in the case of Nintendo, who nags me for 2FA auth FAR more than they need to, this seems like a fringe use-case. I’m more adverse to having piles of plastic collecting dust all over the house than I am to MAYBE having to re-buy a game 20 years from now.
@Mauzuri Right, but honest question, in 10-15 years you’re going to be digging out your copy of Sonic Origins? I’m not trying to start an argument, I’m genuinely asking. Those physical games will eventually break down and be unplayable. A digital store will eventually go offline. Etc.
Again, not trying to be combative. I just know a handful of game collectors and I never understood it. None of them every play or sell any of the old games they collect, so they just sit on a shelf not being played, used, or looked at. This is why I never understand the drama over digital-only releases.
I think I still don’t understand peoples’ need to have their games stored on physical hunks of plastic that can easily be lost or broken and 100% WILL deteriorate and become unplayable over time. I remember as a kid listening to tapes and CDs and wishing for a day when we could move to some kind of format that couldn’t stretch, scratch, skip, or crack.
Now we have that for pretty much every form of entertainment, but there are still die hards who want it stored on a disposable piece of plastic like that helps “preserve” the code somehow.
I know people feel like they want to “own” their media, but it’s all disposable and I really don’t feel that hoarding old NES cartridges in a cardboard box in the basement does the industry a ton of good in the end. If anything it just encourages companies to make more things out of plastic. Ugh.
I try to make it a habit in all video games to save and quit at a really great moment so that I'm excited to go back and play next time. I quite literally almost never have to find a spot to do that in this game. I'm almost always in the middle of doing something cool by the time I get too tired and need to shut down for the night.
Easy 9 or 10 for me, and I wasn't even all that in to Breath of the Wild by the time I finished it. This one is getting me hooked early in a way that game didn't. All the little touches and refinements and layers that have been added to what was already a solid open world RPG though--I guess this is what I needed BOTW to be because I am absolutely loving it so far.
@Dr_Lugae Because people don't know how to calm down and just be. As soon as the next Nintendo hardware comes out, people will be pining for the next one because of all the things the new one did wrong that they're mad about. Everyone has their own personal checklist of things that the hardware is supposed to have. Never mind all the amazing games and consoles that are currently available. Better, faster, more all the time.
Honestly, in my opinion, this just reads like another sour grapes “Switch is underpowered” article. I’m excited about a new model too, but does that mean we have to bag on the old one ad nauseum?
Is it weird that I pre-ordered the digital version a long time ago and basically stopped thinking about it until it pre-loaded itself on my Switch last week?
Nah. Still having a blast with the Switch 6 years later and the OLED model just made it feel fresh again. I’m anxious to see what’s next but the wait will be fun.
I dismissed the Switch for the first couple of years of its existence and have regretted it since. There are two or three Switch exclusives that are now firmly in my top 5 games of all time on any system (namely, Super Mario Odyssey, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and Mario + Rabbids. I'm sure Metroid Dread will have a place on that list too.)
Metroid Dread, to me, is a perfect handheld game. I don't know why. I like playing it on the TV too, but something about playing it handheld makes it feel more special. Maybe just my OG GameBoy Advance nostalgia?
@steely_pete I think that's a legitimate concern. Mine is more general, but is along the same lines: The existence of the Switch Lite just kind of dilutes the most attractive trick that the Switch does: switch! It makes it seem like an optional functionality, when really that's the whole reason it even exists in the form factor it does.
That's not to say I don't think the Lite is great. I had one briefly before exchanging and going to a normal Switch, but my son has one now, and I think it's a rock solid piece of hardware on its own merits. I just think they should have maybe called it something else?
@Pokester99 You don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s common practice for large companies to bet on themselves and buy shares. This is a strategic move and happens all the time. It’s legal, smart, and benefits shareholders.
@OldMcGroin I'm sure this is all accurate. I guess my point was that I'm almost level 12, have been having a blast with the game, and have felt no need to spend any real money yet. In my last ranked round I think I got 15 kills with Ninetails, and I think my highest item level is something like 13. I realize after a couple more months I won't be able to score a single point in any matches, and that's probably when I'll delete the game.
I still stand by my original thought though--so far this game does not seem nearly as pushy about spending money as a lot of other MOBAs I've played.

That's not to say I don't think the Lite is great. I had one briefly before exchanging and going to a normal Switch, but my son has one now, and I think it's a rock solid piece of hardware on its own merits. I just think they should have maybe called it something else?
Re: Nintendo's Profits Drop As Expected, But It Remains In A Strong Position
@Pokester99 You need to check your math, because you put 2 and 2 together and somehow came up with 5.
Re: Nintendo's Profits Drop As Expected, But It Remains In A Strong Position
@Pokester99 You don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s common practice for large companies to bet on themselves and buy shares. This is a strategic move and happens all the time. It’s legal, smart, and benefits shareholders.
Re: Pokémon Unite Is Getting A Game Update, Here Are The Full Patch Notes
@OldMcGroin I'm sure this is all accurate. I guess my point was that I'm almost level 12, have been having a blast with the game, and have felt no need to spend any real money yet. In my last ranked round I think I got 15 kills with Ninetails, and I think my highest item level is something like 13. I realize after a couple more months I won't be able to score a single point in any matches, and that's probably when I'll delete the game.
I still stand by my original thought though--so far this game does not seem nearly as pushy about spending money as a lot of other MOBAs I've played.
