Five years ago today, Nintendo showed off its shiny new Switch console for the very first time. Where on Earth does the time go?
We imagine plenty of you will remember the console's first trailer (up above) rather fondly; after what felt like an age of rumours about what Nintendo's 'NX' console could be, it was finally confirmed that it would indeed feature a tablet-like screen with detachable controllers, playable both in handheld and on the TV.
Its hybrid nature was a pretty novel concept, and we don't know about you, but for us, it's becoming increasingly difficult to remember a time before having the ability to play however we like, wherever we like.
It's perhaps worth noting that this trailer also brought life to meme-of-the-moment, Nintendo Karen (pictured below). The console reveal and the teases for Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2 were pretty important, we guess, but Karen stole the show.
Were you a Nintendo fan at the time of the Switch's launch? Do you remember how you felt watching this video back in 2016? Feel free to share your memories with us in the comments below.

Holy I remember the exact day when I watched the reveal live. I had the day off from school and I went bonkers over the reveal. Safe to say that time sure has fone by quickly these past few years
Remember that reveal and thought it was the biggest joke ever. Now I love the console. The whole gathering at a party is nonsense though, I tried that once. 4 people around a small screen trying to play Mario Party just doesn't work.
All I remember is the insane hype for ant details whatsoever!
…Watching YouTube videos with no footage and some goon reporting on a rumor they “know for a fact to be true”.
Lol good times
Getting old and it's time to jump for 9 generation.
And nobody knew how much we would come to dread the joy con drift issue.
Man, can't believe it's been that long already. I feel old.
When i saw Nintendo Switch logo suddenly appeared and making click sound, the switching from TV mode to handheld mode made me reacted "WUUUT ?!" 😲
"What was that machine ?!"
And with that reveal Nintendo was back in the game with the long-expected hybrid console that took a failed hardware generation for them to perfect. Yay.
Still no folders
I watched that trailer—so exciting! And then I waited precisely 5 years to get one 😵💫
The rumour cycle was really crazy back then. Eurogamer was correct with the hybrid rumour but thinking about it, the rumours that were incorrect back then still live on today. I particularly remember a rumour about a 4K device around PS4 Pro power level which has lived on for the Switch's lifespan in the form of Switch Pro rumours.
Probably still the most eloquent video game hardware commercial I've ever seen - and that's with barely a word uttered outside the background song! Every moment looked like the kind of console gaming future I had been yearning to live in, and it remains a pleasure to rewatch nowadays, after living this future for almost five years myself. The very early scene where the guy makes a few simple movements and the world of Hyrule literally leaps over from the TV screen to the smaller one, with no need for streaming (the exceptions of today are a handful that only reaffirms the rule), no need for crossplat save uploads, no need for multiple downloads, usually not even a need for cable tinkering beyond the initial setup... felt like sorcery. So did the very notion of being able to play a full-fledged Elder Scrolls game on the go. And I'm still far from finishing said game - despite over a hundred of hours that I doubt I could have easily poured into it anywhere else. From the more linear trips I actually finish to the free-roam adventures I'm rarely in a hurry to complete, Switch has blessed me with so many experiences and continues to do so by the day. And I'm not even half as social as all the folks in this commercial were.😄
The NX was revealed.
The irony for me is that I really didn't care at the time, because I was so broke 👌
@Farts_Ahoy No seriously! I would binge watch rumor videos and basically all of them turned out to be useless, yet somehow I still enjoyed them.
I remember watching the reveal and it promising so much, yet come launch day it delivered on everything.
Nintendo had been out of the game for a while at this point ( they still had the 3DS ) so it’s great to see them back on top.
@Spagetti69 we've got a black and tan king charles cavalier!
Here’s to another 3 more years for the Switch. The games look good, there are still IPs untouched, it’s still selling like hot cakes. Why would anyone want another console in the immediate future?
This thing still got fuel.
All I can think is... it's probably only another 2 - 3 years until the next Nintendo system. I'm not ready to start saying goodbye!
(Also, 5 years later and Nintendo hasn't shown us Karen again, this is a tragedy.)
I still remember setting two alarms so I could wake up to catch the reveal trailer. I hadn't been so stoked about a console since the Wii.
I remember being so excited, taking it home and unboxing it...........only to find cracks in my casing before I had even turned it on.
I was a bit annoyed but still pretty excited so I soldiered on and played Botw for a few weeks loving every minute.
I had bought a pro controller on launch as I am a home console player more so than a handheld gamer and decided I would try it in handheld, only to discover the left Joycon drifted badly, I was getting really annoyed by now and then I went out and bought a Nintendo recommended SD card to expand my memory for all the downloads I was planning on buying only to find the SD card reader didn't work either, anger was building quickly by now.
Then began the process of contacting Nintendo and having to send in my new console for them to have it for 2 and half weeks while I twiddled my thumbs.
To say excitement had died by then was an understatement.
That is the memory my new Switch has left with me
Glad others had better ones than mine
My worse ever console.
I was so excited! Such a great concept. I remember winning tickets for an early hands on at Earls court UK- took my bro and had a blast. Best day 1 purchase for me.
And yet no rumors for the next console (unless you include Switch pro rumors.)
I was really excited for the Switch and Breath of the Wild I think Nintendo really needed to change their formula after the WiiU. I got both on launch, I actually had to buy breath of the Wild twice as Amazon messed up my order and delivered a system and no games. I think the Switch is right up there with the SNES and Gamecube as one of Nintendo's best systems.
Was blown away by the reveal, and no wonder it's become my best every Nintendo console, and sold very well.
Same day next year, the will probably release the Switch 2. Or maybe announce.
Remember seeing the trailer in the car on the way home from school one day, was instantly enamoured with the concept. Pestered my parents endlessly for one and luckily got it for my birthday in April.
Shame the concept has completely worn off of me now. Handheld just isn't fun and holds back games that could really use the extra boost to run well like the Xenoblade titles, which makes me sad thinking about how much more crisp they could look with better hardware. One day...
@Nin10dood wow! What a crybaby! Over 4 years on and that’s really the best memory you have of your Switch?! Jesus! Get it over it. Things are faulty in life…..cars, electronics, everything….it happens, Nintendo fixed it, not sure what else you want?!
@HamatoYoshi I think it would be hard for that to not be at the forefront of your mind if you had that many problems with the console. I know I'd be upset.
My only regret with the Switch is I still haven't played it at a hipster rooftop party...
Removed - unconstructive
@Matl 4 years on though! All the great games since then are overshadowed by that?!
@Roger_Brazil
The Switch is technically a 9th-gen console.
Having been a Wii & especially a Wii U owner I was a sceptic!
Glad to see it all worked out.
What a fantastic little machine it is and continues to be.
I remember when console generations used to be 5 years before the replacement arrived. I reckon with the current semi-conductor shortage the PS5/Series consoles could last closer to 10 years this time as I've seen it suggested they will still be in short supply into 2023.
I think even the Switch will probably go another 3 years now thanks to the boost in sales from lockdown and the problems with getting materials to manufacture a new system.
@HamatoYoshi Sure, 4 years is a long time... but Nintendo has a pedigree of having consoles that just seem to withstand anything. Pretty much all their handhelds and most of their consoles are sturdy as bricks, and switch just... isn't in comparison. I still have consoles as old as the DS lite that are in better condition than my switch, and my switch has plenty of issues from normal usage. This is coming from someone who plays primarily docked 95% of the time too, which means theres even less obvious reasoning as to why the card slot doesn't work half the time, the shell is cracked, the joycon are broken, etc. Switch just isn't a well made console at all.
5 years?! I can't believe in it... Now, I want to start crying, 'cause I got Nintendo Switch only on December of last year(2020). Originally, my aunt wanted to buy me Switch in 2019, but she spended her money on other things. After this, I was dreaming about Switch... And on December of 2020, when gaming PC that I wanted to buy has gone from store, I'm strongly decided to buy Switch. And I'm very happy about getting Nintendo Switch instead of a gaming PC.
@sparkyfilm So have we.
Lovely, aren't they.
Hooray for five years of Wii U rereleases and endless waves of multiplatform ports running poorly on hardware that was obsolete even back then.
@Nin10dood Cool story. But yeah, manufacturing defects exist that's why we have warranty.
I had a similar story with my original GameBoy, I got it on my 11th birthday. It died within a day. Me in tears (I had been asking for it for a long time), went back to the store with my parents. They replaced it with a working one and that replacement GameBoy worked long past I eventually replaced it with the GameBoy Color.
Warranty, it truly is a beautiful thing.
@CharlieGirl Yeah, I'm agree with you. I got Switch only in December of last year(2020). And I'm not ready for the next console. 😞
И насчёт The Elder Scrolls(Скайрима?)... Я понимаю, что игроки делятся на два типа - те, кто перепроходят игру, и те, кто не могут пройти её, да? 😄
Best five years of my Nintendo fandom! Can’t stop the switch!
@sanderev
Yeah I understand that, but 3 in one console is a bit much.
Also, I have 2 kids that were also excited, try telling your kids for 3 weeks that their new console is a lemon.
Also, I was accused by Nintendo for dropping it, warranties might cover you for faults but being accused of something you didn't do sort of rubs you the wrong way.
@HamatoYoshi
Wow.
You really had to resort to that sort of answer?
I was just stating that my memory isn't all rainbows and butterflies like most.
I know faults happen, doesn't mean I should accept it.
Can i make a humble request that we stop doing these kind of articles across the internet. Yes time passes, and eventually it will be X years since X event happened - but i genuinely do not see any benefits in pointing it out? We are hardly celebrating anything, simply just witnessing the passing of time.
@Matl I got mine launch day and it’s still like brand new and performs perfectly. When people say their Switch is ‘falling apart’ or ‘on its last legs’ I genuinely don’t know how, maybe they need to look after their tech a bit better.
@Nin10dood but after 4 years you’re still holding the grudge. Nintendo fixed it for you. Things go wrong in life. Move on and enjoy the games.
Got mine launch day.
But have now changed to Switch OLED.
@HamatoYoshi
I have.
I bought a PS5.
😁
I'm kidding.
My kids love their Switch, that's the main thing.
I remember thinking "oh no, it's the Wii U all over again" when they showed the person playing on their couch, as it wasn't exactly clear to me at the time what was going on. I felt initially kinda "meh" if I'm honest, because after the Wii U, which I had and loved and had great games, sold so abysmally, I thought if Nintendo would just make a powerful console that could compete toe-to-toe with the RawPowerTwins, and if they leveraged their much-cooler-IPs properly, they'd've been able to absolutely destroy the competition. Fast forward to now, it's my favorite console of all time in any generation by any manufacturer. Nothing comes even close. 33 months as the bestselling console certainly suggests they've done well against the competition. The core concept is brilliant, the games are amazing, and as a roughly 60% docked:40% handheld player, I don't ever want a non-hybrid console ever again. Switch is simply amazing. Now if we could only get them to port over Xenoblade Chronicles X. 🤔
@HamatoYoshi Good for you, dude. Not everyone will have perfect experiences with their technology, and with switch its much higher than should usually be expected. I can guarantee that I have handled my switch with care since launch, and yet it still has a card slot that requires me to prise out the cartridge from, a cracked shell in multiple places from quite literally nothing, and my launch set of joycon just completely broken from normal use (my subsequent sets of joycon are fine, since I never really used handheld outside the "honeymood period" of the switch).
Just because your system works fine, doesn't mean that you need to be so aggressive to others who have had a less pleasant time with their consoles, Also, may I remind you, most prior Nintendo technology has never, ever had as many blatant flaws and widespread issues as the switch. Sure its the games that matter at the end of the day, and I ove the switch for that, but the console itself? Not particularly fond of having these small problems that add up to a less than stellar user experience on a daily basis.
@sparkyfilm Fantastic dogs. All they wan to do is follow you about. Can’t have a dump without him following lol.
i remember everything, the trailer, the song....i saw it 25-30 times
I have a lovely story about lining up at rockerfeller center to buy this on launch night but it’s vaguely nsfw…
Been a good five years of Nintendo gaming, and with my nice fresh oled , I can see many more happy years, if the slightly delicate (by Nintendo standards) tech lasts out.
I’ve also enjoyed the fact it’s been so popular, making news sites like this one a bit more fun…I know sales and popularity aren’t super important but as an N fan for so many years, it’s made a nice change
The Switch caught my attention when Odyssey was first teased. I decided that I would buy it when that game was released, even if it meant only playing that one game. At the time l was burned out on games having focused on PC for 15 years, but the Switch revived that interest.
Sadly no Non Specific Action Figure in the reveal.
I just remember thinking, "this thing is perfect for me". And I was right. Pretty much my second favorite system of all time. So versatile and so much fun. It was the first time I didn't look at a console as a "manufacturer's console"; it just felt like it was designed for everyone, rather than being a Nintendo Console (or a sony console or a microsoft console), in a way that no other console manufacturer has done for me. Aside from WiiU the switch is the first time I've been excited about hardware and not just the potential software lineup. As always I hope the successor is just an iteration of the switch. I will be heartbroken if Nintendo tries a different hardware style next go round.
@Matl Agreed, Nintendo consoles used to be manufactured with Nintendium - an indestructible element that would continue to work no matter what you threw at it. Sadly, with the Switch they've used ordinary plastic. Presumably for reasons of cost.
I believe in extremely long console life cycles. Switch is doing so well 5 years in I can't see it going anywhere for another few years! Hek, I'd still be buying and playing sega master system games if they were produced!
One of the best Video Game adverts ever made. Genuinely. Their marketing has been spot on from Day 1.
@Nin10dood Didn't you have a warranty? If that happened to me I would've just gotten a new one from the store I bought it at.
@Yas Well, I've thrown my Switch at a wall (don't ask why) and it dixn't break, except for one of the joy-cons breaking of, which was a quick fix.
When a new console comes out. All I wanna see is how the next 3d Mario will play like.
This reveal marked a turning point from their cringey bad marketing that helped drag the Wii U into failure.
That’s the 5 years in which I got old
this is the first console that I have ever buy at launch, nuff said
Still have my first and only day 1 switch. Bought another switch since but my day 1 is in rough shape now. Only works well when docked. Handheld mode is no longer a real option after all the wear and tear.
The advert was cool, but it wasn't until I played my friend's Switch that I knew I had to get one. Love it.
My first Nintendo console that I got at launch! I fell in love thanks to this trailer
I hear it allows you to play in both handheld and TV modes, and that the Zelda game is all open-world and stuff.
5 years later and basically the same amount of features!
It's been 5 years?
Five years ago people think the Switch will flop just like the Wii U, oh how time flies and they are proven wrong.
And to think 5 years have arrived and wait where's NintenDoomed fandom saying the Switch would die in less then a year after coming out???? Whaaaaa...
Maybe the best console i have had/have (have had them all since the early 90s, including this gen).
Only thing that i miss alot is some type of miiverse, social hub, and more party games like nintendoland and Wii party u. 😊
Not gonna lie, I thought it was a Wii U revision.
Was it really 5 years ago? Wow! I still find the hybrid thing a novel concept.
Here's to another 5 years of Switch greatness!
@SwitchForce @Specter_of-the_OLED Once Sega quit the console market, people have been predicting that the GC, Wii, Wii U would be Nintendo’s last console. Nobody is saying that about the Switch!
I opted to get mine for Christmas in 2017, but I bought BOTW for Wii U on launch day. 😊
And what a reveal it was! I was impressed right from the get-go. I didn't expect the system to blow up like it had though, and I have already made so many great memories on so many games for this system. With the release of Nintendo 64 games on Nintendo Switch Online, I expect many more good memories. I really hope the next Nintendo console just expands on their current concept, rather than create a whole new one.
Crazy how many people thought it would flop.
Already 5 years ... and there´s still a lot of games for me to play.
I recall the reveal video! it filled me with excitement! it was like a Wii U GamePad that you could take anywhere without being restricted to having to be near your console.
five years later, I love the Switch! it’s probably become my favorite Nintendo console ever! and I’ve been a fan since 1986!
I remember being turned off by the way they marketed it, but was intrigued by the console itself!
All I remember was ARMs. After the WiiU that didn’t install confidence. Glad I was wrong but now I want a pro console. It’s been forever.
Five years & still so many features missing that should've been there at launch
@Spagetti69 and that's a good thing
Wow, time really does fly.
Party on, Karen, party on...
I dismissed the Switch for the first couple of years of its existence and have regretted it since. There are two or three Switch exclusives that are now firmly in my top 5 games of all time on any system (namely, Super Mario Odyssey, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and Mario + Rabbids. I'm sure Metroid Dread will have a place on that list too.)
I got mine just before a 3 month stay in South Korea. Put a lot of hours into BotW, Disgaea and Minecraft.
The Switch has done very well considering its hardware was already aging when it was released 5 years ago. Nowadays its really showing its limitations.
What would be awesome is a Switch that can do 4K 60hz when docked and 1080p 60hz when in handheld mode. An 8 inch screen with slightly larger, more robust joy-cons would be nice too. And if it supported DLSS, Nintendo could keep frame rates high and finally implement some anti-aliasing to destroy those cursed jaggies.
@Tandy255 Once Sega quit the console market, people have predicting that the GC, Wii, Wii U would be Nintendo’s last console.
Since when was Sega Nintendo? And whom is these people you speak of?
@Ravenmaster Nowadays its really showing its limitations.
That's with some intense GPU heavy games but the most part majority of them work just fine. We have to remember this is Nintendo and what they do best at Innovations while still pushing the tech on Portable gaming with a Dock to dock and play at home.
@SwitchForce Sure I get that, and they do well by working around those limitations with their art styles but i'd love to see BotW 2 running smooth as butter in 4K @ 60hz without aliasing jaggy lines. A man can dream. DLSS and Nvidia's upcoming Lovelace SoC can bring that dream to life.
This was a great time, after watching the reveal a bought a little bit of Nintendo stock & when I sold it 3 years later, that had paid off 3 years worth of games and the console. Truly believed it had enormous potential even when I had a Wii U at the time.
@BTB20
I had to send it into Nintendo themselves to repair it as the shop had no stock left, it was sold out so I would have to had waited even longer for a replacement.
Nintendo took 3 weeks and accused me of dropping it.
I had taken photos of all the faults (thankfully) as it was faulty straight out of the box.
When they sent it back the SD reader still didn't work so I had to send it back in for a further week and half
Not a great start to a new console with 2 kids who were more excited than I was.
Half a decade later...... Still love this console like it was brand new today! 1 of the very best games consoles ever!!
@SwitchForce Internet chatter and friends. I constantly heard people say that Nintendo should get out of the HW business.
Here is an article from 2016 literally titled ‘Should Nintendo Just Stop Making Consoles?’
https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2016/04/29/nx-hardware-legend-of-zelda-should-nintendo-just-stop-making-consoles/?sh=54f272d41851
Nintendo Now you are playing with POWER uhhh JoyCons lol.
Man do i miss the old commercials where Nintendo could say that.
@Nin10dood Things like that are why I never buy a console in it's first year. There are way way more faulty units in the first year for any console. There were also people with bend Switches and many other issues.
@electrolite77,
The marketing for the Switch has been awesome since day one, and night and day compared to the Wii U, no wonder it has performed as well as it has.
@BTB20
Yeah I agree.
Sadly I learnt that the hard way.
Got in on the Switch late, but glad I did. I’ve had every Nintendo console except the Wii U. Glad I got a Switch.
@Ravenmaster So you're asking for something that not even the Series X or PS5 can fully do from Nintendo?
At most... 1080P dock is all we can really look forward since even the Series S, a $300 console and 100 watt system is struggling to do 1440P as promised.
Also considering that the battery life in still not the greatest handheld on a 720P screen. 1080P is in handheld is still a ways off... Maybe the Switch 4?
I chuckled at the idea of people crowding around the tiny screen. If the hybrid nature had any real use for me, I figured it would be pulling the console from the TV when my cat sat in front of it. Turns out I was right. When I go out and about in public, I tend to bring my 3DS. It fits in my kilt pockets better. I still haven't beaten The World Ends With You or the portable Kingdom Hearts games.
@Oberzilla I still haven't beaten The World Ends With You or the portable Kingdom Hearts games.
Are you kidding me...same here I got plenty of backlogs that need getting back to from the 3DS eras still....
Sheesh, 5 years already for the Switch!... makes me think...
My Top Requested Improvements (In General) for the Switch System: 🤔💭
... or just put the MOTHER Series on the platform in the meantime.
**None of these are likely to happen anytime soon, but they'd surely provide value-adds to all existing and prospective users. Still love the Switch already regardless. Happy Gaming y'all! 🎮😉👊🏾
... Wun can only hope.
Not needing:
@wuntyme8
More Apps (Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, Apple)
Media Player
Web Browser (that can handle various video formats & players)
Inviting Malware/Virus-Switch does good for what it is already need those use the SmartPhone
Needs:
@wuntyme8
More Customization/Organizational Options (Themes, - *Uploading Avatars, Backgrounds, Folders etc.)
This needs to happy since Day One. We don't like Wifi just to do system transfers. As saves grows along with Game Data when you get the 1tb and or 2tb when it comes out become a chore to move if one gets a OLED or OLED Super Switch.
@ModdedInkling
according wikepedia, No, its belongs 8 and they are correct. 9 is xbox series and ps5
@Roger_Brazil
If you pay attention to Wikipedia, you'll find out that there has been a lot of trouble in how they wanted to classify the Switch. It wasn't simply 8th generation to begin with. There are some lengthy discussion pages you will need to read
Even on the 9th Gen page, they made mentions of the Switch being stuck in between the two generations.
The ultimate determination comes from how long the Switch's lifecycle will be. I'm doubtful it's close to the end.
@SwitchForce As someone who almost exclusively uses my PS4 as my media center on a TV... I most certainly would appreciate...
*"More Apps (Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, Apple)
Media Player
Web Browser (that can handle various video formats & players)"*
... on my Switch to use portably as it has a much bigger screen + variable kickstand for larger viewing angles than a smartphone along with much more entertainment value than a tablet. I'm sure I'm not alone as someone who would appreciate the additions, especially when travelling/commuting anywhere.
@SwitchForce
Re: *"Inviting Malware/Virus-Switch does good for what it is already need those use the SmartPhone"
Malware and viruses haven't been much of an issue on any game system browsers- even ones already on past Nintendo systems.
Nintendo has already had these in the past themselves lol smh (C'mon Ninty, no excuses). All of this has become even more standard on any entertainment device... even the cheapest TV's in 2021. I maintain these additions would just be added value for current and prospective users/customers.
Super Mario Odyssey, Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r], The Way Remastered, Resident Evil: Revelations...
