Re: Parent Trap: Nintendo Switch Parental Controls Beat Console Rivals To The Punch

shosbu

It is not true that Xbox does not offer these things. I just got an Xbox One S. I have my boys' their own accounts setup through www.xbox.com. Under Xbox family I have limited their content, what they can share or view, the ESRB level of games they can play, set time limits, how much they can spend downloading or whether or not they have to have approval, whether or not they can access internet, what website ratings, and on and on. I receive emails updating me each time they have done something like download a new game. Since Windows 10 is on Xbox One I get updated by their accounts on it as well as PC with it defined which device they used.

Re: Nintendo Share Value Dives Following US Presidential Result, But Recovery Is Likely

shosbu

Is there even room for us conservative, Christian gamers, in this hobby anymore?

This being a British oriented site I do not know how close you are to the politics of "The colonies" but Hilary openly stated she intended to raise taxes on the rich to pay for her agenda as president. The rich might have to "pay their fair share" but who does that tax ultimately fall to? It falls to the middle class who will see increase in prices for goods and services to cover the taxes the business owners would pay. What that would do is remove even more discretionary income from the middle class. Who do you think supports Nintendo in the US the most? The middle class.

Re: Nintendo Switch Will Be a Single-Screen Experience

shosbu

As an older gamer, Gameboy was just fine pressing start to access inventory. The same was true for every other system before Wii U. I really like what they are offering with Switch. Plus, imagine how difficult it will be to mess up a future Star Fox game on a console like this.

Re: Feature: NES Mini Classics - Castlevania II: Simon's Quest

shosbu

This is my favorite Castlevania game. As one who lived through the original release of this game the review is fair. The culture of the time made it so much fun to play. Toughest part? Having the crystal and kneeling at the edge of the screen until it lets you advance. Then being able to show your friends how to move on and have them marvel over your newfound knowledge was fun. I used to have the password memorized that gives you everything to face Dracula!

I get it that it is not everyone's cup of tea.

Re: Nintendo to Skip Paris Games Week at the End of October

shosbu

Prediction: If NX is still on target for a March launch date Nintendo will maintain radio silence through the end of 2016. And if NX is still on target at the beginning of 2017, it will be revealed about the time we would expect the February Nintendo Direct and available immediately for pre-order and purchase in stores only a couple of weeks after.

Re: Metroid Prime: Federation Force Power Bombs in Japan

shosbu

I played FF and it was "okay at best". It did not feel like Metroid or Prime for that matter. The control scheme is frustrating and uncomfortable, really inexcusable, considering the ability to play it on the NN3DS and have access to two joysticks. If it had just been labelled as another FPS, it would have probably been tolerable. The review on this site was VERY generous compared to the more realistic reviews of other sites.

Re: Anniversary: The Super Nintendo Is 25 Years Old Today

shosbu

So many good RPG's... I remember when Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct were such graphical advances. That FX Chip though. Great memories of LoZ LttP, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Ninja Turtles Turtles in Time, Contra, Madden, NBA Live drafts and tourneys with friends, Top Gear, Super Tecmo Bowl III. A fantastic system during teen years.

Re: Video: We Need To Talk About Ghostbusters 2 On The NES

shosbu

For me, the issue on the new movie is based upon nostalgia. We have all of these calls lately to change characters for whatever purpose i.e. make fem Link, the Ghostbusters are now fem, etc. I like remembering the original movies for the created characters. Dan Akroid and Bill Murray are easy to remember in those moments for their other comedy as well. That is why I don't care to see the new movie. Similarly, since the 80's the Link I was introduced to was male. Every iteration of him since, the whole timeline, features him as male. I want him to remain that way, not become some far east idea of a "Link" in time as opposed to the hero that saves the princess.

Lastly, all of the recent remakes make me wonder, "Were the 80's the golden age of movies?" Gene Roddenberry, Steven Spielburg, Mel Brooks, etc.

Re: Eiji Aonuma Rules Out The Option to Play as a Female Link in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

shosbu

As someone who has played this game from the original and before post-modern deconstructionism dominated Western culture and before a generation of Millennials that expects their every whim and expectation adopted and fulfilled, I say "thank you" Zelda team.

Remembering the days people played video games because they were fun and not because devs advanced their cause....

Re: Talking Point: PS4K 'Neo', NX and Supplemental Computing Devices - Home Console Gaming May Be Changing

shosbu

I think we will see the beginning of diminishing returns in terms of perceived value and price. Many if not most of the supporters of the console industry have a long memory of lasting console generations. I do not think many people have the money to put down so rapidly nor perceive it will continue to be worth it support console gaming if it is going to change so frequently. I mean, how far are Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft from a "new every two" plan that companies like Verizon and AT&T were doing with new cell phones. The market will burst soon.

Re: Editorial: Let's Make 2016 a Year of Nintendo Optimism

shosbu

NX name should be The Nintendo. Clean slate. Remembering when Dragon Quest was Dragon Warrior on the NES I am really looking forward to those releases. I hope for Zelda's release this year but am having difficulty getting excited about Star Fox. I feel pretty jaded toward Nintendo after Wii U and 3DS moves but I will probably end up with the NX unless it is a total flop because like it or not nostalgia sells or at least it does for me. If you grew up in the NES era I recommend The Goldbergs on Hulu. The Chiptune intro soundtrack will remind you of your NES days alone! All three seasons are on there and there are so many great nostalgic moments in that show.

Re: Nintendo Shares Level Out After $4 Billion Drop in Company Value

shosbu

It is interesting all of the arguments pro-Nintendo due to existing for so long as a company. It is important to remember that their current foray is as video game entertainment company and lets be honest, at that they are failing massively right now. Regardless of a 100 plus year history of attempts at finding the "blue ocean" after their card games. Look at successful western tech company Apple. They are the top of the game in terms of computer technology and GASP! They do not play by the same rules as Nintendo.

Many of us who are fan boys just want to see Nintendo succeed (as a video game entertainment company). We remember the golden years and would like to see more. It really is simple. As a gamer, who lived those years my request really is simple. Iterative sequels to their famous IP's while experimenting for new ones and the ability to play multiplats. Some might complain that this is predictable, milking franchises, and boring. It is easy to speak this way and forget the evolution of Mario as the sidekick to Donkey Kong who then received the most popular platformer of all time on the NES. Then, Mario become beautiful with more color and ability with the more powerful hardware of SNES. On the N64 we were able to explore and platform with our renown plumber in 3-D for the first time! On GC those worlds became more alive, larger and we were able to do even more. On Wii, we could visit entire galaxies! Then, Wii U... to their credit Nintendo's 3D world was nice polish on Mario. But how do we see Nintendo really utilize the power of the Wii U in terms of Mario? Why not at least try a hyper-realistic Mario or a vast open-world Mushroom Kingdom? Take the analogy with Zelda and it is the same, Metroid was one great evolutionary iteration after another up until Wii. Sometimes, I wish Nintendo would stop seeking the "blue ocean" but would actually remember those who have the money and gave it to them to make them what they are today. They refuse and as a result, I drifted to PC gaming. My kids play the Wii U less and less opting for where their friends are, smart devices and western systems. Nintendo is slowly doing it to themselves. I really do not care how much their net worth is as Nintendo when I cannot play an updated iteration of their IP on advancing hardware.

Re: The NES is Now 30 Years Old

@bryce951 I can understand that it may have been a different situation for Europe and the UK than it was in the US. Our perspectives are separated by the Atlantic.

I do have an issue with you explaining your spelling of "centred" vs. "centered". Please do not feel you need to look down your nose at us in "the Colonies". While American English dialect and spelling is different from the UK we over here know that you did not misspell the word. You do not have to be an elitist about your use of the English language. It is the WORLD trade language and is spoken and written differently in every continent whether established by British colonialism or America as a world power. This is one of the best Nintendo sites out there and that is why we in the US like to come here. Don't ruin it for us.

Re: The NES is Now 30 Years Old

shosbu

@bryce951 Speaking from the US perspective, as I child I clearly remember pretty much everyone my age talking about how awesome the NES was. I remember Nintendo Power's influence and huge electronics spaces in department stores and games stores dedicated to Nintendo. I remember kids sitting on the playground talking about their latest games and many nights going over to a friend's house specifically to rent a Nintendo game to play for late into the evening. Maybe it was my particular circle in the Plains and Midwest of the US but Nintendo DID have huge recognition. Much less was spoken about Sega until things really got rolling with Genesis. Atari was in its rapid decline and what you settled for if you could not get a Nintendo. There are many articles on it but yes, Nintendo, while not always the kindest and at times just plain cut-throat and savvy, did much if not the most to save the anemic video game industry and bring it back to forefront as a serious industry.

Re: The NES is Now 30 Years Old

shosbu

My first memory as a gamer is sitting at a friend of my mother's house and being baby sat by it playing Super Mario Bros., World 1-2 while they prepared dinner. Favorite game... Dragon Warrior (that's the original US Dragon Quest for you youngsters). In those days they were so expensive my dad had to buy one at a Rent-A-Center and it came bundled with Super Mario Bros. & Duck Hunt with a zapper. So many memories... Happy Birthday NES!

Re: Talking Point: Star Fox Zero's Delay Could Be The Final Nail In The Wii U's Coffin

shosbu

There are many encouraging Nintendo fans on this post. Here is some reality to add to all of the fluff and sugar lauding Nintendo's efforts. I have owned every US console put out by Ninty and even was suckered into the N3DS XL after passing down my Ambassador 3DS to my son. I played Bravely Default on my N3DS until bored and now it collects dust. There have been zero N3DS games aside from Xenoblade Chronicles since its release to justify the purchase. We have fluffed the talk of the delay on Zelda and on Star Fox on here. The truth is we cannot keep making excuses. If it was not for my children playing Lego games on the Wii U, it also would be collecting dust as I play the platform the does continue to deliver, my PC. I am sorry but the truth is it will definitely be a wait and see attitude for me on NX. I doubt I am alone. Nintendo has rewarded their faithful fans with 3rd party brush off, lack of 1st party with albeit a laudable attempt to replace with Indies... not to mention huge game droughts on both consoles but more so on Wii U. RIP WiiU

Re: Industry Analysts Speculate On Nintendo's Future And Satoru Iwata's Possible Successor

shosbu

Great leaders know how to surround themselves with the right people in the right positions. Most of us older gamers and core gamers, if we are honest, miss the NES, SNES days. To replicate at least part of that, you need a CEO with sharp business acumen like Yamauchi. Like all of his deals or not, he was always looking out for Nintendo's financial future. That CEO needs to have scouts searching for blossoming talent. Miyamoto rose up to recognition and fame mostly under Yamauchi.

There is an element of micromanagement that must be left out at the creative level in order for IP like we cherish today to exist. It would be very difficult for a game creator made CEO like Miyamoto to back away from what he has been doing for decades in managing the teams. You have to have a hardware person that says such as Miyamoto did at times, "If we are going to make this game or this hardware, it really needs to have this in it. Make it happen."

In today's socially connected world, you find the relatable face you put them on the social media. Bill Trinen, comes to mind here. They are the messenger of the news good or different. Perhaps these are just my western world leadership ideas but. It makes sense. Let the person who knows business deal in business, let developers create and develop, and let the personality be the face of the company on the Directs, Twitter, etc.
