Re: Random: It's Official, Nobody Likes Monty Mole

sanderson72

@Bass_X0 @Bydlak I remember playing the original Monty Mole games on the ZX Spectrum and C64.
Rob Hubbard's music was incredible for Monty On The Run at the time and the SID chip.

That reminds me to buy the Monty Mole Collection on the Switch store...

Re: Ex-PlayStation Boss On Switch 2's Name: Nintendo Created So Much "Brand Value"

sanderson72

Switch 2 is a perfect name for it. It's certainly a better naming convention when they released the (sort of) successor to the 3DS by calling it....the new 3DS which then got referred to as just 3DS! Talk about market confusion - how did you know you were buying the correct one? And the less said about the Wii U the better.

In other news, Playstation need someone like Layden back at the helm. Many years of 'the accountant' (Ryan) and now Munster (Herman) and the fun element of PS has disappeared, especially with the departure of Shuhei.

Re: Talking Point: Can Sony And Microsoft Really Compete With Nintendo In A New 'Handheld War'?

sanderson72

PSP and Vita were (and still are) fabulous pieces of kit. Sony could make a PSP 3 and it could be great. I'm a bit concerned with PlayStation's current so-called management and what they'd expect it to do.

Sony have a tendency to get distracted by other things and then their handhelds suffered. I mean the PSP doing 82 million units was a good success (mainly due to Monster Hunter) if not to the DS levels but the poor Vita, which still feels like quality in the hand compared to the Switch Lite, died way too early with a Sony knife in its back.

Re: As Switch Closes The Gap, Sony Officially Confirms PS2 Has Sold "Over" 160 Million Units

sanderson72

PS2 lifetime sales were recorded at over 158m a few years back - just because Sony stopped recording sales doesn't mean that it stopped selling.
PS4 has probably cleared 120m units now but Sony stopped counting at just over 117m (just before they ordered a million units to cover for the PS5 shortfall!)

And yes, PS2 had a DVD drive - why? So they could fit more data on a DVD disc than the PS1's CD format. Everyone I know that had a PS2 played games first and foremost but also could rent a DVD from Blockbusters without the need to buy a separate DVD player.

Re: Fear Not, Sonic Team Plans To Support Last-Gen Consoles For A While

sanderson72

Still prefer my SSD-equipped, 72xx series PS4 Pro over the Tub o' Lard PS5.

Miserable UI aside (could they have made the PS5 look any more dismal?) I'm just not getting next-gen vibes from the overpriced paperweight, so good on you, Sega!
I'm hoping Nintendo will do a decent job with the Switch II 'cos Sony and Microsoft are pricing themselves out of the market.

Re: The Math Adds Up, The Nintendo Switch Really Does Have The Best Games

sanderson72

Maths = contraction of Mathematics.

@Mommar Actually, the PS5 sales are falling behind the PS4, with Sony having to lower their sales expectations. Probably likely to get worse as there will be a glut of used PS5s on the market due to those with more money than sense buying a Pro.

We just need the Switch 2 unveiled - COME ON NINTENDO!

Re: As Switch Approaches The PS2's Lifetime Sales, Sony Moves The Goalposts

sanderson72

We know that the PS2 cleared 158 million units. Sony stopped reporting at 155m but other retailer figures didn't and as reported on Statista (https://www.statista.com/statistics/1101872/unit-sales-video-game-consoles/) we can see the PS2 hit 158.7m units as of Feb 2024.

Did it hit 160m units? Just because they stopped reporting on numbers sold, Sony would probably know how many rolled off the production line so it is possible.
Same way as the PS4 finished at 117.16m, but we know that they made at least another million on top of that to account for the PS5 shortfall. PS4 has probably subsequently hit 120m units but we'll never know.

Even if the Switch does overtake it, it'll probably remain the world's best selling home console as all those Switch Lite units won't count towards that.

Re: Random: A Look Into The Birthplace Of Banjo-Kazooie Developer Rare Ltd

sanderson72

Ultimate were one of THE leading developers of the early 8-bit home computer boom and produced such games that defined what the Spectrum was capable of so arguably far more influential than Rare.

I was lucky enough to have an interview for a job at Rare's then HQ at the Manor Farmhouse in Twycross many years ago (didn't get it), and they had all the original Ultimate artwork all around the reception room - I was awestruck!

The building in Ashby should have a blue plaque saying Ultimate created all-time classics here.

Re: Dev Behind PlayStation Series 'Everybody's Golf' Releases New Game On Switch

sanderson72

@AtlanteanMan Actually, Japan Studio didn't fold - they were shut down by the new American Sony who clearly didn't have a clue what consequences closing down the key Asia dev would bring.

@Anti-Matter Ironically, Sony still own Hot Shots/Everybody's Golf but the dev (ClapHanz) parted ways with Sony after they brought the shutters down on the Japanese partner studio.

Could be my first Switch purchase in quite a while! Graphically, this reminds me very much of the Vita version of Everybody's Golf.

Re: Random: GQ Calls Video Game Patches "Laziness", And People Are Not Impressed

sanderson72

Excuse the PS examples but In the PS2 era, a game had to be tested and pressed in time for a certain more realistic deadline as there was no way back from what went out on a shiny platter.

PS3 era and games got bigger and bigger and buggier and buggier.

Start of the PS4 era and sometimes we get Day 1 patches which are a complete overwrite of the stuff you installed from disc, sometimes in the region of 30-40GB of data.

Games are more complex than ever and bugs will fall through, but I do feel like the testing has gone from intense attempts to break a game (aka fat fingers) to a pure reliance on human written unit tests and they've never been good enough.

Re: Former Sega Of America President Bernie Stoler Has Passed Away

sanderson72

Sony wanted to bury Nintendo after Big N shoved a knife into Sony's back over the CD drive technology.

From the PS1 and PS2 perspective, they achieved just that and to a certain extent, I think Sega just couldn't come up with much to make a dent in the PS marketing and sales. The PS1 in particular was viewed as the 'it' gadget of its generation and the PS2, which could play all your existing PS1 titles, doubling up as everybody's first DVD player was just the killer blow.

Re: Nintendo Switch Has Now Sold Over 107 Million Units

sanderson72

@NintendoEternity @iLikeUrAttitude Well, the Switch would need to sell approx half as many units AGAIN as it has already to get near the PS2's 157 million+ units sold so is that likely?

PS2 sold to so many people as their first DVD player as well as gamers (to me, it was both!)
I've recently got a Switch Lite as my gaming on the go device, but would've chosen a PSP 3 instead had stupid Sony not been so blinkered and stabbed the Vita in the back before it had chance to gain traction.

Re: Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown Delayed Until 2023, Switch Fans Left In The Dark

sanderson72

Still find it odd that they'd cut the PS4 and XBone. They'll come up with some guff about how 'the experience wouldn't be as good' or 'ooooh, look at the raytracing!' but I bet the Pro and XOX would've put on a damn good effort.

Oh well, significantly less money for KT Racing devs and their publishers. And given the trailer (such as it was), don't think we'll be missing much if the Switch dodges this.

Re: April NPD: Switch Has Overtaken PS4 Sales In The US

sanderson72

@ivory_soul Sony have just ordered another million PS4s so it's not dead yet - it also uses 'unfashionable' chips so it doesn't suffer from the majority of shortages in the same way that the Switch doesn't.

Sure, the PS5 has stolen the old girl's thunder and it doesn't help that it was the Pro version that was axed. Add to that new dumb Sony's refusal to drop the base PS4 from £260 to a £200 price point and they're hurting their own sales.

Can the 100 million seller from Nintendo ultimately unseat the 157 million selling PS2? I think a new Switch will be needed before too long and that will dampen the current Switch's sales.
