Donkey Kong isn't the only thing Nintendo has filed a trademark for recently. As spotted on ResetEra, the Japanese company recently applied for to trademark 'NSW' in Europe. VGC points out how this is commonly used as the abbreviation for Switch.
While there's speculation from some fans it could be a new approach to Switch marketing, the recently launched Switch repair service sub in Japan or even signs of a new system, a more likely scenario could be Nintendo is simply aiming to protect its IP. This would allow it to take legal action against products possibly using the 'NSW' (instead of 'Switch') that are unauthorised.
The category it's filed under is Goods and Services - specifically referencing "electronic game programs" and "video game".
As mentioned, Nintendo last week Nintendo filed a "new" trademark for the Donkey Kong series. This was a bit different being an "update" - with the mention of "downloadable programs for portable and electronic consoles". You can read more below:
What do you think Nintendo might be planning for the word 'NSW'? Think it could be for something else? Leave your own thoughts down in the comments.

July/Aug I think there will be a hardware revision announcement. I’m hoping and leaning towards a more portable system than the Lite with more features, like TV docking (possibly sold separately). Nintendo has everything now to make a Switch thats the best of both worlds, and they could very well do it to close out the line
I wonder if that means the Switch life cycle could be nearing its end? I feel like Nintendo only uses abbreviations after a console is dead. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like Nintendo never promoted the use of NES, SNES, GBA, N64, GCN, etc. until those consoles were already gone. Like how they're displayed next to retro tracks in Mario Kart or trophies in Smash. Otherwise, Nintendo likes to say the whole mouthful: "Nintendo Switch family of systems." That brand identity isn't as important once they stop making them and move on to the next thing.
I think it would have been amazing if they trademarked it as "NX" instead. Can you imagine? NSW is fine, though.
Edit: In before "NSFW" jokes.
I don't actually know that I've ever seen someone refer to it as the NSW.
NSW can be stand for anything.
Non Stop Workout
New South Wales
Night Shift Working
New Style Wayfarer
Neo Surrealist World
I call it the NS if I abbreviate it like that but usually just calling it a Switch will do just fine.
Nintendo's gonna sue Australia for also using NSW (New South Wales).
Nintendo Switch Wii confirmed. It fits perfectly in the line of confusingly named successor consoles.
Can you really trademark 3 letters lol
Sounds like a Switch Pro is coming.
Can confirm my Grandparents once gave me a pair of bootleg "joy-pad PRO" controlers "for use with a NSW device"
@slceel YES. Great joke!
Imagine if it was a Wii you put in the dock? Would make no sense! But I’m sure there is something more sensible it could be, if Nintendo actually did this, for some reason.
Gotta keep those trademarks safe. Doubt it's anything more. I know it's backseat news now but there's still a major chip shortage in case people forgot, so a new console would be a bad idea especially considering the state of the world and new COVID varients popping up daily.
@Would_you_kindly What you don't think things like WWF, HBO, CNN are trademarked?
@Kaiffe123 naw its a nintendo switch except it re-added disk support so it can emulate the entire wii U os, includding the Wii os emulator
Emulatorception.
However the console it only turns on if you connect to a switch light via bluetooth
Just when we thought it was safe to go back into the water, more Switch Pro rumors surface, but seriously at this point the Switch Pro rumors have more lives than Michael Myers.
Nintendo is in an odd position. My last check was sales are still strong so releasing a new device seems like it would water down those sales.
I think it is time for an upgrade to the system. I love it, but it is feeling the age.
@Would_you_kindly anything can be trademarked if it’s available, the miracles of capitalism
@Dilly-Mick YES! Genius!
@SteamEngenius well I didn't know you could trademark abbreviations
Nintendo Switch Widecare obviously
New Switch
Obviously
"VGC points out how this is commonly used as the abbreviation for Switch."
I'm not sure how that'll go, as it's been even more commonly used, for a very long time, as the abbreviation for New South Wales in Australia.
But I have heard the fellas down south ready to welcome Mario as the new NSW Premier. He'll have to hand his red shirt and hat for blue ones then. And I guess that means Wario will take on the Maroon colours for Queensland.
Would have been more interesting if they filed a trademark for "NSFW."
NINJA APPROVED
Likely for the widecare service and the abbreviation in legal documents.
NSW is a state here in Australia called New South Wales
NSW is the state that I come from, here in Australia..
Nintendo Swap confirmed
@Not_Soos I think the Switch has another 3 years at least. That's not to say its successor won't be out for another 3 years as there is often an overlap where the old hardware keeps going for a while.
Whilst it is going back on their new approach, I wouldn't be surprised if they went down a PSP/PS approach. Main difference being from current switch is that you can own the home console on its own and the Switch continues as a bolt on option.
Commonly used abbreviation that I've never seen or heard anybody use 😅
I think the deal with trademarks is that it protects their usage in a certain context
So specifically, you cant have a video games (or maybe computer or even A/V) named NSW. But if you had a restaurant called NSW, the trademark would not apply.
For instance, I know Hershey trademarked the shade of orange used to market Reese's candy, but the result was that you could not use that shade of orange to market food. Unrelated use of it was fine
NSW?
Hey, I used to live there!
Can’t say I ever remember seeing the abbreviation used before. Looks a bit too much like NSFW to me…
For those who havent seen this before, its used often in sales charts.Hori uses it as a product code for switch accessories
Personally I do remember seeing it as a consumer
@Not_Soos
All of those abbreviations were used throughout the lifecycle of their respective platforms.
In fact, for the GameCube in particular, Yamauchi prohibited anyone from using any abbreviation other than GCN, so no NGC, GC, GCB, etc...
New Super Wario game confirmed!
Waaaaaaaaaaaahhh!!!
@westman98 Ah, okay. I'm too young to remember many of those console life cycles, but from the various press events I've watched archived video footage of, I never saw those abbreviations. Though as @spottedleaf says, I guess maybe it was more of a behind-the-scenes thing with investors and not really something Nintendo was openly communicating with their consumers.
I would actually like to see a Nintendo switch that’s just a dock. I already have a lite but wouldn’t really need a full on console that’ll just be hooked up to the to all the time. A cheaper switch that has no screen and only connects to the to would be a cheaper alternative to people who already have the lite or to people that just want a tv console and nothing more. I know it defeats the purpose of a switch, but so did the lite,
@gcunit here’s hoping!
Too bad for NSW - New South Wales (the state of Australia that contains Sydney)
What I expect based on Nintendo's track record:
Nintendo Switch - 2017
Switch Lite - 2019
Switch Oled - 2021
Switch Lite Oled - 2023
Switch Next Gen - 2025 (Maybe late 2024)
The system still has legs can 8 year cycle seems normal these days
@slceel Ah yes, cannot wait to play the new Nintendo Swiitch.
It gets really weird if they were to ever update it with an F in the middle, that would certainly be out of left field.
EDIT: DAMNIT @Xiovanni YOU BEAT ME TO IT.
Nintendo Switch World? A new version of Nintendoland.
Nintendo Switch Wired? Docked-only Switch console.
New Super Wario? Self-explanatory.
Australians crying rn
@Lizuka I think The NPD Group refers the Switch with that abbreviation.
@Not_Soos
NES (or just "Nintendo"), Super NES (or Super Nintendo), N64 and GBA were very commonly used abbreviations among the general public.
I doubt Nintendo will start using "NSW" to communicate to the general public but it's still nice to own that abbreviation.
I’ve never abbreviated the Nintendo Switch to NSW or seen it even used that way. If anything I’d abbreviate to ‘NS’, but ‘Switch’ is easy enough to type out.
I do however often abbreviate Nintendo Switch Online to ‘NSO’ as it’s too long to type out everytime. Wonder if they’ll trademark that next if not already.
Anyhow I’m sure there are more pressing matters to give energy to Nintie (abbreviation for Nintendo).
… Wun can only hope.
It could also mean they plan on bringing MK8 tracks to MKT, as some of those could easily be done in that game's engine (like Excitebike arena)
I don't think I've seen anyone abbreviating Nintendo Switch as "NSW" that much. I've seen it, but most people say "NS" or just "Switch"
@pjzx I agree 100% with this! I think it's too obvious to just expect a switch pro or another revision. With how affordable 4K TVs are becoming, I would not be surprised if Nintendo made a home version of the switch, where they can cut off the cost of adding a screen and joycons, just slap in a pro controller, and focus more on the specs. The current switch is really starting to show it's age now, and I could see Nintendo relagating the current switch to more of a portable system. This would allow them to create an ecosystem of portable and home consoles connecting together, which could allow for alot of interesting ideas.
Nintendo Switch Pro is coming soon mark my words.
@Anti-Matter Not safe [for] work
@Vix Yeah, we've already had Pokémon BDSM jokes with the 4th gen remakes
Commonly? I have never seen "NSW" used for anything except New South Wales. I think I've seen "NS" a couple of times, but by far the most common abbreviation of "Nintendo Switch" is "Switch", and that's short enough generally nobody needs to go further than that.
@HotGoomba This was my first thought as well. Good thing they categorized it under "Goods and Services."
Still, I wonder if that would be an issue if the trademark was filed in Australia.
Only a matter of time before they trademark NL.
@Rambler Yeah, the categorization matters of course.
@thefettuc spot on, adding the pro controller in the bundle along with a couple of joy cons and making it a bit beefier in specs probably throwing in a game would probably bring it up to near the same price as the current switch. Also it wouldn’t cut off some games like how the current lite does so everything would still be playable. Apart from Labo iI guess. Cmon Nintendo get it done haha.
Switch pro probably
Let's hope Nintendo don't call their next system the Nintendo Home System because some people will end up in hospital!
Can't say as I've ever seen this abbreviation. For anyone that wants to shorten the system's already short name, I only recall seeing it abbreviated as "NS".
I for one do not welcome Mario as the New South Wales premier. I feel that donkey kong would make a much better leader. Someone strong and tough and fearless, not a plumber.
