"Upgraded Textures" I'm honestly not convinced. Maybe partially upscaled?
I just compared the screenshots in the eShop listing to just spinning up my Gamecube (in 480p, of course) and aside from the screen resolution bump, grass/stumps/everything seems the same.
Don't let this discourage you from playing both if you haven't. They're excellent.
@marandahir I wish that were true. I have Skyward Sword Zelda, and the only unique item from her is the fabric. Also, other amiibo were nerfed significantly. 8-Bit Link generates barrels with Rupees in BotW, and Link's Awakening (while lacking unique items in BotW) drops fish instead of barrels. In TotK, both just are barrels that generally have apples and arrows.
@Breeze23 No sign of them. Recall BotW launch March 2017, and the Champion amiibo followed in November. These two are probably November of this year, roughly the same timeline.
Also, Nintendo went crazy with amiibo for BotW, while there are only 3 for TotK. I think the market has shrunk considerably over the years.
@Greatluigi Based on datamines, they give unique fabrics. In-game there are a Zelda and Ganondorf paraglider that are currently inaccessible, and someone has already engineered NFC tags to act as these two amiibo, and that unlocks them.
BotW and TotK somehow use the same world for completely different experience, and they truly deserve to be experienced in release order. BotW doesn't overwhelm the player with too many things to do at once. You have two main collectables, koroks and shrines. You have four main areas with major quests, and the final Hyrule Castle, plus the lesser settlements of Hateno, Kakariko, Tarrey, and Lurelin (coincidentally, all on the East side of the map). But when it gets down to it, you're clearing the Divine Beasts, increasing your hearts/stamina, and to a lesser extent finding materials to upgrade your armor, and otherwise just preparing yourself for the final Ganon fight.
TotK ramps the density up to an incredible height. Every cave has a Bubbelfrog. Every piece of gear that was previously Amiibo-locked is now found in a chest in a cave, in a chest in the depths, or sometimes after a lengthy sidequest. We retain the main collectibles of shrines and koroks, but now add crystalized charges/battery length, we have the extra settlement of Lookout Landing, almost everywhere a shrine existed in BotW there is now a cave, korok, or treasure of some kind. The depths are just as large as the overworld (although once you're proficient at exploring, rather barren save for the Yiga camps and ancient mines). There's 80-odd instances of Addison failing to put up a sign too. Overall, there's just... more. Personally, I won't complain that there is too much, I'm not sure that it is possible, but if a player goes into TotK having not thoroughly explored Hyrule as it appeared in Breath of the Wild, it might just be too much.
@Deemo37 I actually just found a way browsing a Reddit thread this morning. Here's what I had already figured out: Gemakis Shrine/Rito Shrine: First: The whole shrine is easier with the Glide set. Second: You'll need at least two Rocket shields prepared (I recommend four for your sanity), and three bomb shields. (Flowers, time bombs, or bomb barrels work). You can re-make bomb shields in the shrine, but the wind makes this annoying. From the start, you can bomb or rocket shield jump to the first platform, that's the easy part. Second, get two bomb shields equipped. Line up with the nearest floating platform with the laser shooting straight down. Bomb shield jump at the edge, and you are able to land on top of it. From there, bomb or rocket jump again and you should be able to clear the rest of the laser area.
Now, skydive down through the tube, and make your way to the platform to the left of the vertical shaft, taking out the constructs if desired. Have at least three rocket shields ready. From the corner of the platform, quickly take out a rocket shield and do a sideways hop into the shaft. This will take you up about halfway. From there, go into skydive mode (glide outfit helps immensely here), and land on one of the little lamps that stick out just barely from the walls of the shaft. Do the same thing again, get out another rocket shield, quickly side-hop with ZR pressed, and fly higher, then land on a higher light (or the top). If you're not at the top yet, do it one more time. And that's it!
I've been playing this way myself. If anyone has any ideas as to how to beat the Rito Village shrine, I'd appreciate it. I can get all the way to the final vertical shaft, but climbing it seems impossible.
Two (+ 1) is just right. BotW shows us a sparsely-populated Hyrule. TotK shows us one being rebuilt AoC's opening chapters show us the major landmarks (castle town, Akkala Citadel, Hyrule Castle) fully intact. That's enough of this particular Hyrule for me. I'm glad to have visited, and I've had my fill.
@Il_Nintenditore I feel like you can make the old lock/key/key item workable even in the TotK/BotW engine with some clever level design. I wonder if we'll get a final DLC dungeon like the Master Cycle that plays closer to the original dungeon style.
I never even tried the duplication glitch. It being fixed is only a good thing long-term. People will hack the game for infinite items anyway, better to not be tempted imo.
@Fulkaffe "No Gimmicks" In no particular order, the non-Wii (U)/Switch games: LttP: Dark World TP: Become a puppy DS Duo: Touch controls Four Swords (Adventures) /TFH: Multiplayer ALBW: Dark World Part 2 Electric Boogaloo/Wall Merging MM: Transformations/Time Loop Wind Waker: Sailing everywhere, Tingle Tuner OoX: Two versions, season swapping/Underground, Time travel OoT: Time travel MC: Kinstone fusions AoL: Side-scrolling dungeons TLoZ: I guess no gimmick by definition. Link's Awakening: You know, I can't think of anything. There's one world map, some overworld puzzle to solve before each dungeon, a trade sequence, dungeons that use the item within for their respective puzzles. I really think LA is the 'definitive, most gimmick-free' Zelda experience.
(Very) minor spoiler: I'm rather annoyed about two things: There is no way for Wii U players to transfer save data. Akkala Citadel's interior was shown in Age of Calamity, but it TotK, it somehow has a natural-looking cave instead of being a grand fortress in the style of Hyrule Castle.
@Cashews Last I checked, the Switch held back BotW by prompting Nintendo to remove all the two-screen functionality that Aonuma showed off long before release.
I'm irrationally annoyed that Nintendo offers no option to transfer data for Wii U players.
For example, why not allow Wii U players to save their data to an amiibo and load it into TotK?
An amiibo can store exactly 540 bytes.
Unfortunately, most of that data is not freely rewritable.
Only 216 bytes are for 'AppData' according to https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Amiibo
Going off the ZeldaDungeon wiki, BotW has a number of different horses. https://www.zeldadungeon.net/wiki/Horse_(Breath_of_the_Wild)
Specifically, based on stats there are:
16 types that appear in normal environments
3 that Bokoblins can ride.
Epona, the White horse, and the giant horse
So, that's 22 total horse stat arrangements. So, horse stats can fit in 5 bits (which would actually allow for 32 possibilities).
Now we need to save horse appearance (Big horse, Epona, and Zelda's horse can just ignore this part) https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/switch/189707-the-legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild/faqs/74764/horse-looks
We have 8 coat colors, 4 coat patterns, 8 mane colors, 10 mane styles, 8 snout colors, 8 ankle/hoof colors, 2 ankle hair styles, and 2 eye colors.
That'll fit in 20 bits.
Next, we have current affection. In-game this is displayed as a value between 0 and 100, and would thus take 7 bits, but let's just give it a whole byte.
So, altogether, uniquely specifying a horse before its name takes 28 bits, and we'll round that up to 32 bits, or 4 bytes.
Finally, we have the horse name, and this is the rough part. Horse names are up to 9 characters long. I'm going to assume 2 bytes per character, so we're at 18 bytes per horse for the names.
The amiibo format itself allocates 20 bytes for the amiibo's nickname, allowing for 10 characters, and since both use the system keyboard, 18 bytes per horse is certainly all this would take.
Altogether, that's 22 bytes to specify each horse.
In BotW you can store 5 horses, so let's quintuple that, now we're at 110 bytes.
Add one more bit to cover whether or not the Champion's Ballad was complete, and we still have 105 completely free bytes to record any other information about a BotW save you could want.
Other possibly useful information I can think of: Flag for Master Mode , flag for DLC generally, Full set of Shrine completion information (136 bits or 17 bytes), divine beast completions (5 flags), Sheikah Tower activations (15 flags), Trial of the Sword completion (3 flags), 90 flags for the sidequests, quantity of Korok seeds found (10 bits, clearly we don't have the 900 bits necessary to save entire Korok status), allocation of hearts/stamina vessels (max +27 hearts and +10 stamina, so I think we can get away with 5 bits for hearts and 4 bits for stamina, then check to make sure it doesn't exceed tokens from the Shrine list).
All that together is 126+5+15+3+90+10+5+4=258 bits, or 33 bytes, so we still have 72 bytes left, or can space out the data a bit to make it more readable.
From here you could even throw partial quest completion (like partially completing From the Ground Up, list of items purchased for your home in Hylian Homeowner, whether a few particular items like the Hylian Shield have been found, status of the Great Fairy fountains, etc. into the mix).
Twilight Princess' Magic Armor returns! It does make me wish that one of the Twilight Princess amiibo gave the magic armor set. As long as the Wolf doesn't become an ally like BotW, I think it should drop the Magic armor.
The Link's Awakening costume is hilarious, but the additional items are a downgrade. In BotW (yes, even on Wii U) the Link's Awakening spawns a bunch of fish alongside a chest with generic items (which demonstrates some forward-thinking on Nintendo's part given how much later LAHD launched). So, basically the Wind Waker link without the unique stuff, but still referenced LA's Island setting.
In TotK, you get barrels that generally just give you arrows.
@Half-ShellHero
Not the case for BotW specifically.
BotW is the ONLY Wii U title that requires an installation when using the disk version. It is also the only game that, when returning to play from the home menu, takes quite some time to start back up.
Breath of the Wild uses a 'high memory' mode that exceeds the usual 1GB limit during gameplay and dumps a portion of the memory to disk when you open the home menu, to allow you to multitask with the web browser or Miiverse (RIP). When continuing to play, it reloads that dump back into RAM.
Consider also Smash 3DS. It also uses a high-memory mode on the original 3DS. It prevents the O3DS from doing just about any multitasking feature, and whenever you quit the game, you'll notice it does a full system reboot, while every other game can just be closed and leave you at the home menu without issue.
1080p is 1920x1080, or 2073600 pixels total. 900p is 1600x900, or 1440000 pixels, which is then upscaled to 1920x1080, and since the scaling is noninteger, it doesn't look the best. I wish that I could opt for half resolution in either the x or y direction, something like 960x1080, then integer scale everything horizontally, but not vertically, by 2. That would reduce the pixel load to 1036800/frame, and wouldn't have any weird noninteger scaling issues.
A children's card game where all products are purchased at random? Sounds like scummy gambling tactics. All CCGs should follow the LCG method of every card being available in packs of nonrandom cards only. Anything less than that is just vile.
@Dahn_ Recency bias. @Olliemar28 As a social experiment, can you redo this poll ~one year from now (or at least a few months after the final inevitable ToTK DLC goes live)?
At any rate: BoTW Trailer wins. Summary: We spend 30 seconds just admiring a beautiful world. 20 seconds in the Korok Forest, with a long shot on the Master Sword. Then Link just looking over Hyrule Field during an orchestral swell. Then we see Link doing some incredibly normal things (gameplay-wise at least), and it just looks like a world that I want to explore. Note: no enemies yet, we've only seen ordinary animals doing there thing. Then, some voiceovers, a clip of Ganon flying around the castle, and a combat montage, then more shots of the many environments. Then, that zoomout at 2:20 is just perfect. We're treated to the divine beasts and scenes of destruction and despair. And then there's the final ending scene with the piano and Zelda saying 'Open Your Eyes', which is a request not just to Link, but to the viewer. The BotW trailer establishes Hyrule as a gigantic place, promises you can go anywhere, teases incredible interactions, and invites the viewer to try it.
If I answer generally as 'Which should be made into a movie' rather than 'Which should Illumination make': Kid Icarus. The only people in the comment section voting for any other game are people who didn't play Uprising. This, of course, comes with the caveat that a movie should just use as many of the original cast members as possible. Celebrity voice actors (with rare exceptions like Jack Black and Robin Williams) should be generally avoided. The performances in Super Mario Bros. were generally passable, except for Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and (to a lesser degree), Seth Rogan as DK, but when there are hundreds of actors who specifically know how to do excellent voiceovers, go with them over the people trained for stage/television/live action film roles.
"Tournaments" I sleep whenever they do 'invitational' tournaments with a bunch of youtubers and twitch people play in a Nintendo-official tournament. However, I LOVED watching the 2015 and 2017 NWC events, especially the open qualifying events nationwide so that anyone could earn an invite by actually being good at a game. Seeing people compete across a bunch of different titles where no one knows what the next round will bring is great fun. Oh and a reminder to all: I think Wii U Super Mario Maker courses can still be downloaded. Be sure to grab the 2017 courses!
Here we are on the last day of the eShop, and there's no sign of Four Swords Anniversary Edition reappearing. Frankly, that's a scummy move on Nintendo's part.
For me it has to be either 2004 or 2007. After some thought, I think it has to be 2004, here's a rundown (based on titles released in the US in 2004):
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, Metroid Prime 2, Metroid Zero Mission, Pikmin 2, FireRed/LeafGreen, WarioWare Twisted, DS Launch, Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Power Tennis, Crystal Chronicles, Four Swords Adventures, Pokemon Colosseum, Tales of Symphonia, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, and that's just Nintendo stuff. Half-Life 2, GTA San Andreas, Halo 2, Need For Speed Underground 2, Spider-Man 2, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Metal Gear Solid 3, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, World of Warcraft, and Viewtiful Joe

Re: Zelda Boss Wanted Certain Tears Of The Kingdom Areas In BOTW, Prevented By Wii U's Limitations
@Half-ShellHero

900p is 1600x900, or 1440000 pixels, which is then upscaled to 1920x1080, and since the scaling is noninteger, it doesn't look the best.
I wish that I could opt for half resolution in either the x or y direction, something like
960x1080, then integer scale everything horizontally, but not vertically, by 2. That would reduce the pixel load to 1036800/frame, and wouldn't have any weird noninteger scaling issues.
Re: Random: Nintendo's New Zelda Video Asks "When Did You First Wield The Master Sword?"
A Link to the Past is my first Zelda game.
Re: Talking Point: Which Is Your Favourite Nintendo Controller? Every Nintendo Pad Ranked
Wii U GamePad is only so low because none of you played BoTW with it.
Sad.
Re: Talking Point: Which Is Your Favourite Quest In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild?
Hobbies of the Rich was hilarious
Re: Feature: Pokémon TCG Community Engulfed In Potential Fraud Scandal
A children's card game where all products are purchased at random? Sounds like scummy gambling tactics.
All CCGs should follow the LCG method of every card being available in packs of nonrandom cards only. Anything less than that is just vile.
Re: Poll: Breath Of The Wild Vs. Tears Of The Kingdom - Which Final Zelda Trailer Was Better?
@Dahn_
Recency bias.
@Olliemar28 As a social experiment, can you redo this poll ~one year from now (or at least a few months after the final inevitable ToTK DLC goes live)?
At any rate:
BoTW Trailer wins.
Summary:
We spend 30 seconds just admiring a beautiful world.
Re: Talking Point: Which Nintendo Franchise Should Illumination Tackle Next?
@TheFox
You owe it to yourself to try Uprising.
Re: Talking Point: Which Nintendo Franchise Should Illumination Tackle Next?
If I answer generally as 'Which should be made into a movie' rather than 'Which should Illumination make':
Kid Icarus.
Re: Nintendo Live 2023 Announced For Seattle In September
"Tournaments"
I sleep whenever they do 'invitational' tournaments with a bunch of youtubers and twitch people play in a Nintendo-official tournament.
Re: Video: We're Playing Zelda: Ocarina Of Time In Our New YouTube Series 'First Bytes'
I suggest that Felix should aim to clear OoT and Majora's Mask by the ToTK launch.
Re: Video: Is 3DS StreetPass Dead?
"Streetpass Quest"
I don't think that's Zion's 3DS.
Re: Surprise! FMV Game Night Trap Is Getting A Game Boy Advance Video Release
Just a video, no interactivity? Lame.
Re: More Indie Developers Are Giving Away Free eShop Codes For Wii U & 3DS
At least some of the collateral thinking codes still work, I just redeemed one.
Re: Seth Rogen On Voicing Donkey Kong In The Mario Movie: "It's Gonna Sound Like Me And That's It"
@kurtasbestos
They could even have gone with Maurice LaMarche who played Donkey Kong in the 'Anthology of Interest' episode.
Re: 31 Best DSiWare Games You Should Get Before They're Gone Forever
Here we are on the last day of the eShop, and there's no sign of Four Swords Anniversary Edition reappearing. Frankly, that's a scummy move on Nintendo's part.
Re: Talking Point: What's The Best Year In Gaming?
That's an incredible lineup.
